Seagate Expansion 3TB USB2.0 External HDD $159 at MSY

500

I guess this would be the EOL for these HDs now, still very good price for those who wants get the 7200rpm HDD out and put in their HP N40L.

This post was about same HDD at Dick Smith for $169. As someone mentioned in the comments section that MSY is cheaper, this post has been changed accordingly.

    USB 2.0 is so SLOWWWWWW

    • +6

Yeah, but the drive inside isn't. I'm with the OP, rip em out and load up a microserver.

      • +1

anyone tried to rip it out but can reuse the enclosure as a ad-hoc USB<->sata reader?

        • +1

first thing i did when i bought mine. use something like a credit card to pry the covers off and away i go :D

        • +3

Sounds dumb, but could I put a normal 500gig sata drive in to replace it?

        • +3

If you still want the case, then the answer is no. When u open up the casing, the hinges in the case breaks, then u can't put them back together. (maybe superglue could help :p)
However, if you don't care about the case, u can just plug the board onto your HDD and it will work fine.

        • Thanks, I don't mind if it looks a bit ratty

        • Use rubber bands otherwise you will have trouble when you come back to open the case again :)

        • +2

          duct tape is your friend.

great enclosure for a backup drive (smaller capacity thats just sitting around) that you keep hidden away.

who cares what it looks like if it gives you another spot to back up all those invaluable pics/vids/music collection.

rip the 3TB out and put it in system for better use, and refit a crap one.

        • +3

Im sorry but this is completely untrue. I just opened 30 of these and you can very easily pull them apart without breaking any clips at all. I used two butter knifes to lever the base away and pulled upwards. Worked perfectly.

To anwser the original question, yes you can put another drive in there after you remove the original, its what i did with some of my USB 3.0 enclosures from amazon

        • Any pics to show this?

Interwebs say it is a Seagate design that you have to destroy it to get inside.

  • not a bad price. i recall them being this price a few months back or was it $159/ea?

    • You may be right, eg, at Big W.

    $10 cheaper than MSY.

    • +1

I think you mean that MSY is CHEAPER than Dick Smith.
      I see $159 at MSY..

      • You are right. I'm sorry I didn't do a Statiicce search.

      • Sorry. That'll teach me to use a 3 day old pricelist. Looks like drive prices may be falling rapidly, depite the fall of the dollar.

Curious about the difference between the drive in this and the oem drive only. The last 2tb external i pulled apart had a 7200rpm ST2000DM001-9YN164 with CC96 firmware that powers the drive down too often.

        • Can you flash a different firmware to make it more suitable for a desktop?

        • not at this stage, and the threads about it at seagate forums are growing every day.

Called melb dick smith, price is $199 not $169…werid

    • +1

      Probably the USB3.0 version (Cat#: XM2199)

    • Brisbane CBD has $169 on the price tag. Melb store must checked the wrong item.

Cheapest Seagate 3Tb, 7200rpm bare drive on Staticice is $188.47, bargain!

  • How sure are you that it's a 7200rpm drive?

I have 2x 2TB Seagate Expansion drives and they both had 5900rpm drives in them. (Yes I said 5900rpm)

    • The 5 that I've pulled apart have all had ST3000DM001's in them, 7200RPM

    • +1

2 of those I got are all 7200rpm..

Feel free to check out whirlpool forum or comments of previous deals on this HDD, everyone got 7200rpm drives.

    • +1

Seagate dropped 5900rpms some time ago

    • +1

      5900rpm only applies to 2tb usb2 versions.

    • 2tb came out in the green version (the 5900) all the 3tb seagates are 7200rpm.

I checked on the web they have only stock at branches: Malvern and Dandenong(VIC)….

    • and your point is? if they only had these two locations would you still be negging? heck most places only have one store, the fact that MSY has many and this is at two is a bonus.

    • +3

you can choose to purchase it at Dick Smith for $10 more if you like.

FYI, MSY website is never correct ROFL

The 5 that I've pulled apart have all had ST3000DM001's in them, 7200RPM

How can they sell a HDD with case/board/power adapter etc for less than just the HDD ?

    • +1

problematic product, probably.. heats up a lot. Would not be surprised if it is not produced anymore

      • +2

EOL because new model is out on USB 3.0 (same HDD inside), definitely not problematic product.

        • +2

Plenty of negs on amazon due to case issues. But drive is good if you take it out. No need to neg me, not my fault ;)

    • +1

      its actually $206
      $188.47 is only 2tb

  • If there are any case issues, maybe use drive -in- the case, until it plays up…

then pull drive out of case & use it where you will, eg, in an HP N40L or N36L…

go to the dollar store and buy something else!

  • please anyone who has this google "ST3000DM001 sound" and then post comments.. im looking to build a NAS (qnap) using these.

    • I have 4 of these and a XT in a Synology NAS. I have it running in the bedroom 24/7 and the missus doesn't complain about the noise, so it must be quiet :)

    • +1

Yeah they chirp when they start up, pretty funky sound, but you get used to it very quickly.

  • Stock: Out of Stock

If you're willing to wait for the delivery, Amazon.com still has these USB 3.0 3TB drives available for US$139.99 plus delivery (~$14).

    • or pricematch at OW with the receipt from http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/70161 and don't wait!

      • I tried this with a printout of the Amazon page, but they wouldn't match it. Should have tried with the receipt instead.

        • +1

I tried and failed as well but that was before someone (thanks max23) posed this OW receipt https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=6baa02349efaa970&resid=6BAA02… for the Seagate Goflex Desktop 3TB USB3 drive.

        • Did you go back to the same OW you tried at the first time?

        • I had already ordered (& shipped) mine from amazon before this receipt got posted. But it shouldn't matter, its a OW receipt, surely they have to match and OW receipt if nothing else

        • I tried that and was told they don't price match against their own receipt even if there's no 5% discount.

    • yes, this is a good one, just order one. thanx mate

Just brought 5 from JB HiFi @$158 each.
My n40l will be so much happier :)

  • The 5 that I've pulled apart have all had ST3000DM001's in them, 7200RPM

    • Thats all you will see, seagate dont do a green version of the 3tb atm.

  • Bought two from local DSE (sunnybank) for $169 on credit card, there were no stock at MSY in QLD and cant be bothered to waste time trying luck to see if there are price match with no stock at 159.

The $199 is the USB3.0 version, only the USB2.0 version is $169.

There was one left this morning at sunnybank DSE, not sure if its there any more. :)

grabbed Seagate Expansion 3TB but with USB3.0 from JB HiFi(Brown Plains.QLD) this afternoon for $169 :) did not see Expansion 3TB USB2.0, checked with sales and he did price match, what a surprise, receipt uploaded: https://www.dropbox.com/s/iv1kpf9lvxifmr8/IMG_20120526_17180…

    • Thanks for the receipt mate, will try to grab one from JB MacGregor.
      $169 for a local 3B USB3.0 is a very nice price.

  • I got my 3tb expansion for $158 at JB. It was the USB 3 version.

  • no stock at VIC… -_-

  • Think this is the same drive. The good thing is that CPL is offering $10 voucher to reduce to $149.
