Was looking for a budget friendly laptop to replace my venerable mid-2010 17" Macbook Pro and was checking out the EOFY laptop deals. I considered the Acer Nitro 5 for $1195 + $100 Gift card but wasn't too keen on the screen or processor.

Checked the Lenovo EDU site hoping for another offer similar to the legendary $999 Lenovo deal and stumbled across this one. For an extra $300 you get an upgrade to the R7 5800H with an extra 2 cores / 4 threads and a much better 165hz / 100% sRGB screen.

Apparently ships in 2 business days* <— Not sure what the * means lol

There's a bug on the website where if you click on the laptop link it won't open it correctly and it takes you to an error page. Follow the steps below to get around it:

  1. Login to the Lenovo EDU website
  2. In the middle there will be a link to search devices "For Gamers"
  3. Laptop should be listed first or second in the search list - Do not click on the laptop it won't open correctly or shows up as page not found
  4. Click on add to cart and proceed all the way through to the end for payment.

Here's a review of the $999 Lenovo unit by SleepyBargainHunter - note the screen in this offer is a much better 165Hz, 100% sRGB one compared to the 120Hz, 45% NTSC of the previous deal.

For anyone looking to add another 16GB RAM for dual channel this one works based on a1b2c3e4f52002's feedback in the previous deal.

    • Yep, sold out. They really just don’t rest

Just checked, looks like its back in stock as of Wed, 29 Jun 22 @ 09:00 AWST

  • Is there an minimum age requirement for the edu store? I see that for Apple store uni is the minimum requirements. Can I use my 10 YO nephews email to order from Lenovo? Thanks.

    • They don't ask for your age or check your identity. They just send an email to the email address you enter in the registration form to check whether you have access to that email address. It seems to accept anything that ends in .edu.au. Once you've verified that you have access to a .edu.au email address, you can put any name and other details you want when you place an order.

    • -1

Not sure, would be worth giving it a try though. Registering for an EDU account only asks for an .edu email and first/last names but doesn't ask about age specifically.

The only thing I found was on in their privacy policy which mentioned this:

Our websites are intended for adults and children aged 16 and over, or equivalent minimum age in the relevant jurisdiction, who have permission from their parents or legal guardians to use them. Lenovo does not seek to collect personal information about children under the age of 16. Individuals under the age of 16 should provide no personal information to Lenovo.

If Lenovo learns a child under the age of 16, or equivalent minimum age in the relevant jurisdiction, has submitted personal information to Lenovo, we will take appropriate steps to delete the personal information as soon as possible and not use it for any purpose. Lenovo encourages parents to take an active role in their children’s use of interactive resources and to inform them of the potential dangers of providing personal information about themselves.

        Thanks mate!

  • Thoughts on the battery, team? At 60Wh, we're looking at, what, around 5 hours non-gaming activity, unplugged - is that fair?

    • In a saver mode with moderate screen brightness probably. With balanced mode and high screen brightness you'll be looking at 3-4 hours. In gaming it's like 45 minutes.

I had my 5600H 3060 $999 replaced with this one because it had some manufacturing issues with the touchpad and speakers. They basically upgraded because the 5600H model sold out.

Anyway, the screen is amazing. It's brighter and the colours are great (the 5600H screen isn't as bad as it appears on paper but this is a huge upgrade). Also it has great response times with only minor ghosting so it suits the 165Hz.

Performance is also incredible for a low end model with a 5800H, I get 13200~ in C23 which puts it around or above other 5800H laptops. Cooling is really good because the Ideapad had an overhaul with its cooling system from last year's model, it's identical to the Legion 5. Unfortunately no MUX switch (or HDMI bypass) so you won't get the full 3060 performance at high frame rates, but it's only the 90W model so it's gimped regardless. Still a massive upgrade over the 3050 Ti though.

However…. there is a downgrade from the 5600H and that's the storage. The 5600H model came with an Intel 670p which is a decent low-mid m.2. Unfortunately, my 5800H model came with a bottom of the barrel Micron 2210. A poster-boy QLC m.2 with no DRAM and garbage tier R/W speeds (2000/1100). I upgraded it to an SN570 and threw in an extra 16GB DDR4 for dual channel. So you may wanna factor in a $150 upgrade to get the most out of this laptop. You can move the garbage Micron m.2 to the secondary 2280 slot so it's not wasted but you will also need a spare m.2 screw because it is not provided. I should note that YMMV because they can use different components in the same laptop and I may have got unlucky with a left-over garbage m.2.

I received my laptop earlier this week but didn't start using it until the my order of the Crucial 16GB DDR4 3200 RAM arrived from Amazon today.

Getting the laptop case open was a pain in the butt, I managed to pry the bottom side off by using the mini membership cards you get for your key chain example - Just took a boat load of patience and being careful not to pull to hard.

Some RAM info for those that are interested

Default 16 GB stick of Samsung RAM = M471A2G43AB2-CWE
Crucial stick from Amazon = CT16G4SFRA32A.C8FF
Checked HWinfo and both sticks had 4 bank groups each which means that they are both x8 RAM

Both sticks in dual channel mode and both being x8 RAM = amazing performance

Like Yuri mentioned above, I've also got the Micron 2210 storage as well but the screen and performance is top notch.

This laptop is such a huge upgrade to the Intel Core i5-460M (2C/4T) processor and beastly (lol) GeForce GT 330M 512MB graphics card in my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro 17" I've been using for the past 12 years haha.

One more tidbit about the RAM both the Samsung and Crucial sticks are single rank (1Rx8) according to CPU-Z

      • +1

Same memory in mine. The Micron 2210 is super easy to upgrade at least and you can just move it over into the second slot. Strangely the official specs lists the secondary slot as 2242 running at 3.0 x2 speeds but it's actually a regular 2280 running at the full 3.0 x4 spec. I nabbed some cheap m.2 screws off ebay and they worked a treat. The drives are also far away from the CPU/GPU so they never get excess heat. It's a well designed laptop. I'm playing Guardians of the Galaxy on mine at the moment and it's incredible. Ultra settings and ray tracing with a hint of DLSS at 80fps. No overheating or throttling to speak of.

I've just received a similar upgrade from my 5600H Ideapad that i got during the $999 deal. Had some stuck pixels and they sent me a 5800H model with a better screen like yours.
Would like to say that Lenovo has been easy to work with for the replacement but I'm really disappointed that my replacement 5800H has a dead pixel on as well. Just sent off another warranty claim to them…

Kinda sucks that I've had 2 laptops in a row with pixel faults. Quality control needs to be tightened up for sure but otherwise I'd say these are amazing laptops for the price.

      • I try not to look too close for dead pixels. Nearly every monitor and laptop I've bought has had at least one that I've basically given up.

  • No thunderbolt port :(
