    • And with many generic brand food products, they come from the same factory as the more expensive ones.

      Tbh it’s sensationally clever of high end products to also produce the low end products.

      Most buyers will either buy the most expensive product (whether or not it warrants it) or the cheapest product.
      Thus they tackle the product sales of the ones in the medium price range.

      no, the sun is still the cheapest source of energy to evaporate water from seawater …

      that why i find it interesting how one company can market sea salt at hipster prices and another at industrial prices ….to me the difference is more crystal size and shape e.g maldon is flakes which are easy to take a,pinch of and sprinkle evenly on food and the coles stuff is fine granules so can be poured from container or the cooking salt as bigger crystals ….. same with koshering salt , not sure why it costs more as it’s the crystal size that sets it apart from the cheap,stuff.

        Tbh Himalayan salt is a scam.
        Besides preparing a steak (by presalting and then brushing off the salt before cooking) I’ve never found a need for the large crystal type salt in my entire life (and I’m no youngster).
        Kosher salt. I’m not a Jew.
        Easier to sprinkle a smaller amount….I must be trying to hard as never had this problem.

        yeah …australian soil is low in iodine …it’s why we have iodised salt in supermarkets ….

          All bread has to use iodised salt as well, because kids weren’t getting enough iodine and it causes developmental problems.

          IMO the taste difference is minimal and it’s silly to buy it without.

            @freefall101: May also help your thyroid not picking up the special iodine created by the the US, UK and France in the not so far distant past.

      • was under the impression that we don't need the iodised version, but have done some research after seeing your question, and having read the other comments, now realise that we do actually need the iodised version.

        given that the non-iodised packs have been dispatched, will pick up some homebrand iodised salt next time we pop into colesworth.

        will use the non-iodised version for the backyard (where i don't want anything to grow).
