Amazon Kindle 4 Wi-Fi Only, $97 NEW Woolworths, Not Sure Which Stores

1160

My daughter wanted a Kindle so I was planning to get one from Amazon US. But when I went to Woolies this morning, I remembered that they were selling the Kindle. I asked the price and it was just $97 which is lower than the US$109 that Amazon is asking and I don't have to pay for delivery.

Update 30/05/2012: Seems like it's still on sale. Call your local Woolies first to see if it's in stock. They are kept at the service desk.
-Kindle Generation 4 (WiFi) = $97
-Kindle Gen 3 with keyboard & WiFi = $95
-Kindle Gen 3 w/ keyboard, WiFi & 3G = $149.95

Original Amazon Kindle cases are also on sale:
-Gen 4 case with light $??? (most stores are out of stock on this one)
-Gen 4 leather case $17.50
-they also have cases for the Kindle with keyboards.

Mooooo says that the Kobo 6" wireless ereader is $83 from JB HiFi.

  • Thanks OP. Picked one up tonight, they are at the service counter. Clarinda Safeway, VIC. Like others have said, the keyboard model (Gen 3) is $95. I chose the Gen 4 model because the refresh rate is better and a keyboard really isn't necessary.
As for the screen, it's quite nice. Looks almost fake. It's not like any other screen I've used before - when I looked at the demo model, I thought it wasn't on.

    • Also purchased one from Clarinda at the counter today as well.

      Thanks OP!

    • Clarinda Safeway now only has demo model left (damn you all!!!), and I bought the last Kindle 4 Wifi at Moorabbin.

I've been looking into Kindle vs Kobo recently, and it seems Kobo has broader support for different filetypes. Obviously a few people here who know more about them than me. I don't see myself buying too many books through Amazon so I think the Kobo would suit better for that reason. Is that correct?

Edit: This details a solution for the EPUB format since it's not native to Kindle, but I'm not sure about other filetypes.

Use Calibre and you can convert from pretty much any other format to mobi which is the preferred format by the Kindle

      • +1

So the main difference is battery life. Both store > 1000 books which is more than I'll ever have on the device, but the battery life is 1 month Kindle or 2 weeks Kobo (based on 30 mins reading/day with wireless off).

JB has the Kobo 6" wireless @ $83, and Woolworths has the Kindle at $97.

        Decisions, decisions…

        • +1

Go Kindle. I have the keyboard one though. Love it. I use Calibre to convert any formats and have never looked back.

    • +1

Hey Mooooo, I went nuts trying to figure out Kobo vs Kindle. I ended up reading a lot of forum discussions about the Kobo touch's screen failing to respond either completely or just every few touches. It may have just been people piling on the hate, but I didn't come across much hate for the Kindle. I liked the idea of the Kobo's more open format, but Calibre seems to take care of that for Kindle. The web browser is apparently better on Kobo, helped by the touch screen keyboard.

I think what ended it for me is a few friends who said they would rather have the option of using a button to change pages - to keep the screen tidier. Both the Kobo touch and Kindle 4 have the same partial refresh/full refresh feature which I like.

  • Anybody know if this kindle wifi will connect to an iPhone 4s personal hotspot? If not then I'd rather wait for a 3G model.

      • +16

Just because someone is unsure about the tech doesn't make them dumb. Why throw in a derogatory comment and then answer the question?

      • +1

Well being an IT Tech I know that not all devices like the wireless handed out by the iPhones personal hotspot. For instance the HP Touchpad does not connect to it. The question was asked for a reason, if you haven't tried it on this combo of devices then just STFU. The question was not for you! (directed at niksrulz)

          esp with the iphones,

          Does the iphone have bluetooth…
          well yes and no..

      • +2

@niksrulz You mean why are some people so obnoxious*? He was asking as simple question. If you don't have something nice to say, then don't say it.

  • None at the Wynyard branch Woolworths…

While previously researching whether to buy a refurbished Kindle Keyboard or one of these, I read quite few comments that the keyboard's hardly ever needed. So glad I didn't base my decision on that, because unexpectedly, I use it quite often for categorisation, notetaking, searches and looking stuff up on the web.

Anyone in sydney found these yet?

    • +1

Rosehill Sydney. Just called ahead and they had 10 in stock. make that 9 now.

  • +3

    Hi all,
I have been using these for more than 5 years now. I paid $189.00 for my first one.
We have one for each family member.
Consider these only like a book. Wherever and whenever you can read a book you can read these.
The only difference this book can be any book you load to it.

For different eBook formats look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_e-book_formats

You can load your own book (no need to hack or root, you do not have to purchase from Amazon.
There are very good software or online facilities to convert from one format to other(s)
Calibre is a free and very good software.
For Online conversion go to http://www.2epub.com/

I would not (and have never) try to use these for anything else. Too slow and clumsy.

I got an email from Everyday Rewards offering $10 off a $100 spend, so some people might be able to save a few more dollars.
Buy a roll of home brand cling wrap to bump your purchase over $100, and you'll have yourself some OzBargain-style screen protection too!

    • I used my Everydays Reward email for 10% off purchases >$50 to get the Kindle down to $87.30. Add in QFF and credit card points as extra bonus. Plus, prob wouldn't be to hard to claim this as a tax deductable at EOFY. Very good deal.

NB, you might get a few blank looks if you ask for a Kindle 4. You'll have better luck with Kindle 6", or wifi with no keyboard.

      • +1

When did you get the 10% off purchases offer? I didn't get that one :(

    • you'll have yourself some OzBargain-style screen protection too!
      Lol

  • Just picked one up from Woolworths Rosehill Sydney. Looks like it nationwide. Not a single advertisment for it though.

This is an great special as i have been looking everywhere to beat the price and nowhere has it better than this. Grab one while you can

  • Asked at Safeway/Woolworths in greensborough this morning, they knew nothing of the deal and quoted me the normal prices

  • +1

I got the keyboard 3g + wifi one for $14 -at Chirnside Park before.. chick at the counter asked if I rang up early about it, so hello to you!
http://www.imgur.com/JJtcZ.jpg <— receipt and you get a free conversation with the pretty girl ;-)

    • do you mean $149.00

      • yaaa, typed it up on my phone which was acting slow and missed it. sorry!

    • clever placement of the carparking ticket

    • thanks for posting the receipt! :)

    • +1

      Lost QFF points :(

  • Picked one up (keyboard, I love to type notes) at Woolworths Geelong Pakington St. They had the newer one too, but not many left. Yay!!

  • Sweet. I just paid this much for the ad version shipped.

  • Picked one up this morning! Only downside so far is it doesn't support my wifi network as it uses enterprise encryption. Had to tether to my galaxy nexus :(

  • Just been to Woolies. I was after the Kindle Wi-Fi 6" but they only had one Kindle in stock and it was the Keyboard 3G. Paid $95- 10% (Everyday Rewards offer)= $85.50.

    • sorry found it.

    • So you bought a 3g Keyboard Kindle for $95 (pre-discount)? Did that price come up automatically? Can you post a receipt? I am still trying to get one from the first time it was posted, over a month now.

      • It wouldn't have been 3G for $95, it would have been wifi…which is still a darn good price! ;)

        • That's what I thought but as shaybisc said they wanted a wifi but Woolies only had the 3G K.Kindle in stock, must have gotten it the wrong way around. I just wanted clarification! :o)

    • It's the one with the full keyboard. It's got $159 written in black marker on the plastic cover over the cardboard box*. Hmm- just noticed- the keyboard is embossed on the picture of it on the box- clever.

The docket reads AMAZON KINDLE WIFI WIRELESS RDNG DEV1EA 95.00

Haven't got camera here and can't be bothered getting scanner out.

Love the packaging. Jeez I hate modern plastic overpackaging, which often involves scissors, knives or boxcutters getting the damn thing open.

  • +1

    Mawson Lakes SA is $97

    • Thanks mate, will pick one up

  • Went to the woolies in Bundoora. The girl behind the counter looked at me like I was crazy when I asked if they had any kindles…. Don't even reckon she knew what they were…

  • Picked one up from the Safeway at Thrift Park Parkdale VIC. They didn't have any at Southland.

  • How is this one comparing to kindle touch, which one is better?

    • Kindle 4 does not support touch screen, it's also smaller, lighter than Kindle touch with less storage capacity. It's your basic entry Kindle.

  • Got the Kindle Keyboard 3G for $149 from Modbury Adelaide (last one in this store but other have them in SA).
not bad $70 bucks off. Thanks for the info OP

  • Picked up the last one Keyboard 3G for $149 from Altona North, VIC Woolworths. I was so excited, I forgot to buy the cover :(

  • This is an amazing device, due to it being so light and sleek. Mine got stolen today so off to buy a new one.

  • Just bought it from Auburn (2144) Woolies at the service counter. $97

  • Good price, i use mine all the time for manga

  • I got the $97 Wifi at the Blacktown Westpoint Woolies from the service counter. The girl at the counter said they had a lot left of each of the three types. It also shows up on the Woolies app.

  • Got one from West Ryde NSW for $97
Friends also bought from Eastgardens NSW and Eastlakes NSW.

  • Thanks. Got one from Woolies in Wallan for my wife's birthday.

  • I just got one for my wife's birthday from Woolworths in Stafford City.
They are hidden in a locked cupboard at the service counter. The girl had not heard of any price reduction. She checked the latest brochure but they were not in there. The device scanned at $97 and the docket says "TOTAL PROMOTIONAL SAVINGS 42.00".

Stafford has at least one Kindle 3 Keyboard and a couple of the Kindle 4's left.

I tried Dick Smith first but they insisted on $139.

  • No stock in Wynyard and Town Hall.

  • Got one from Bullcreek, WA at lunchtime for $97. There were more available but I couldn't see how many. Thanks to the OP :)

  • +1

Only ones left at Newcastle woollies now are keyboard 3G ones and kindle 4s. Also worth noting the cases are heavily reduced and genuine, not eBay dodgy ones either.

    Located at front counter.

Picked up a 4 wi fi, cheers OP.

  • Has anyone tried rainchecks for these? I wanted to get a leather case (half price) but my Woolies were out of those, but the guy wrote me a raincheck (valid for a month). Hopefully it works out, I don't know if a raincheck is available for the kindle itself but worth a shot if your local is out of stock.

    • Ok so didn't need my raincheck - I picked up a cover with light at Bell Park Geelong Woolies at the sale price still. The guy had to go out the back to get it, so perhaps new stock had just come in, I'm not sure.

  • +1

Bought one today at Eastwood NSW ask the customer desk it will say 159 but scans as 97!!! I think there are plenty left since they display the kindle in an obscure place.

  • +1

just picked one up at Preston woolies, thanks op. no lit covers unfortunately

    • I saw this and swung by the same store today! The lady at the counter was a bit puzzled by all the sudden attention.

  • +1

So, I've run into a bit of a snag with the available cases . It seems my woollies has a k4 case without a light but if im after one with a light I'm out of luck, k3keyboard only. Has anyone else seen a lit k4?

    • I've been looking for the case with light for 3 days. Seems to be out of stock. If you're desperate, Big W has them though the price in Big W for the case with light is $54! The leather case which I got for $17.50 at Woolies is $34.95 at Big W.

  • What's the 3g like on the keyboard version ?
I'm tossing up whether to get the 4 or keyboard for it's internet use.

    • The 3g works great for me, browsing & downloads are no hassle if I'm not near a wifi network. I don't regret spending the extra $50 over the wifi only one at all.

I chose the KB model for the greater battery life & storage, as well as the convenience of the keyboard. I was happy to forego the small drop in physical size in the K4 for these gains…the KKB isn't huge anyway! :)

      • I was thinking hard whether to get the 3G or WiFi only model last year. Ended up getting the WiFi only and in my experience any browsing you'd do on it is so slow and cumbersome that you'd only want to do it if there was absolutely no other option. But considering I am carrying my mobile with me anyway, I might as well use that. Only reason I see for getting the 3G model is if you're travelling a lot. Because as far as I have understood, the 3G on it works pretty much anywhere in the world and is still free to use for all of the browsing too.

        • Yep, if you're around wifi all whenever you want interwebz or online book access that you're using the Kindle, then yes you can definitely save the $50 with no drawbacks.

However, if you're like me & get around a bit, but don't always want to cart your phone with you for hotspot duty, then you can sure lighten your load by going 3G. I enjoy nothing better than sitting by the beach or lake to do my reading & leaving the phone at home! :)

Personally, I hate using my phone for a hotspot, I can literally watch the battery meter going down on the phone after just a few minutes! 3G is a big winner for me in either Tabs or eBook readers! :D

  • The stores I've been to there is no display of the kindles. You have to ask at the service centre.

    • Three of the four stores I went to had service desk employees that had never heard of Kindles. I tried describing it as looking like a mini iPad which sort of worked, except with the employee who had never heard of an iPad.

      • +1

You have to say "Amazon Kindle"…then they'll know, when I got mine I asked for a "Kindle" but got the blank looks, then when I recited the correct incantation the immediate recognition was very evident…it was like Ahhh! Derka derka derka! ;)

  • Finally picked up a Keyboard 3G from Victoria Park, WA - must have called 10 other stores that only had stock of the WiFi version… I think that they have a few more 3Gs in stock if anyone is looking.

They didn't have any cases in stock though, will hit up the CBD stores for them - is the lighted case worth getting?

  • +1

Yep definately worth the $29 for the genuine one

  • Anyone got one up in Brissy at this price?

    • saw them today @ $97 on Sunshine Coast behind service desk…if that is any help

  • Just bought one for my dad. He couldn't get enough of mine when he came over the other day lol! So that's 3 kindles now in two weeks!! Great deal OP!!

  • Remember, for $99 US you can get the Kindle Touchpad which has twice the storage, text to speech, and plays music.

    • +1

You mean the Kindle Touch? The US$99 "special offers" kindle is only available to the US. The normal kindle touch price is US$139.

Factor in shipping and the final cost comes to around $160.

      • +2

And the way the dollar is dropping, it'll be about $6590 AUD soonish. :(

  • If anyone's interested, there's a Kindle 3 leather case (without light) at Coburg Woolworths. There are no cases at Barkley Square Brunswick or Albert St Brunswick stores.

    • I have not found a Kindle 4 case in the Coburg-ish area, alas.

    • .

  • There's one kindle 3 left at Safeway, Murray rd Preston. No cases for K3 or K4.

No cases in Safeway at summer hill, reservoir

  • +2

Just picked up another one guys- store in Mt Waverley and Wheelers Hill seem to have some still left.

    • +1

Thanks! Just got mine (Kindle 4 WiFi) from Mt Waverley. YAY!! =)
They said they had no more 3G ones.

Had no luck with: (as at Monday night)
      Ashwood (1xKindle 3 WiFi & 3G left)
      Burwood (1xKindle 3 WiFi left)
Camberwell (can't remember what they have but no more Kindle 4)
      Middle Camberwell (not selling)
      The Glen (nothing left)

  • Thanks OP got a case at Town Hall Woolies! They're still selling the leather case for Kindle 4 at $17.50 each, 3 more left after I got mine.

No more Kindles left however, but I've got a Kindle already

    • +1

I just managed to buy a Kindle @ Town Hall Woolies this afternoon, they've put out a bit more stock. There were about 6 WiFi models left at 3:30pm.

      • Thanks Surreality, I went to TownHall Woolies today after reading your comment and they have all models available including leather covers so I bought them all. They are very nice. They make me happy even in this horrible weather! Good on you, Woolies and Cheers

  • For those who have bought the official covers for the Kindle 4, how do they compare to this offering? I'm tempted to buy it at $9 - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Leather-Case-Cover-Red-Amazon-Kin… - but not if there's something about this knockoff version that is utter manure compared to spending extra and getting the official case. Thanks for your thoughts.

    • When I had the Kindle with keyboard, I bought 2 covers from Amazon. Both were such bad fits that I ended up not using any covers at all.

Anyway, I got an original Kindle 4 cover without light. The fit is fantastic! Ended up getting a Kindle 4 cover with light by price matching it in Big W and returned the one without light to Woolies (Berwick, VIC). Even if the price is twice as much than the one you're looking at in eBay, I'd still suggest betting the original cover.

      • Thanks for the feedback. How did you manage to price match at Big W? I thought it needed to be an advertised special and I have yet to see any advertising about this deal. Certainly can't find any stores with stock which would make Big W (or anyone) hesitant about price matching, I would have thought.

        • +2

My friend was able to buy a Kindle cover with light at Woolies. I showed his receipt to the Big W guy. They called up the Woolies branch to confirm the price and then they sold me the Kindle cover with light.

I anticipate your next message and uploaded my receipt for your use. Good luck!

  • Anybody know where there's still Kinde Gen4 leather case(w/o light) in VIC (eastern/southern area)?
