I recently bought 2 6000 series cards and both have bad coil whine, especially at high FPS (tested in 3 different PCs (AMD and Intel) with 3 different PSUs).
My old NVIDIA 10 series card does not have any coil whine at all (also tested in the same 3 PCs, was good in them all).
Is this a common flaw this the 6000 series cards or am I just super unlucky?

    • +2

Did you get a Gigabyte 6000 series card? I think the Eagle version has this issue.

      • +2

Gigabyte and XFX, first time trying AMD graphics cards as well and first time having coil whine. I have had 4 NVIDIA graphics cards in the last 10 years and none had any audible coil whine.

        • +1

Get something like MSI afterburner and set your own fan curves for the Gigabyte card. That card is known to have some fan issues if you let it manage itself.

Both of my previous Nvidia cards has coil whine while under max load. Try turning some gfx settings off if you're using it for gaming. I remember for one game if I turned V-sync on/off the coil whine would disappear.

        • +4

Must have had just a dud batch. Have had multiple AMD and Nvidia cards over the years, have experienced coil whine from both. I spent a bit more and got higher tier cards and my coil whine issue was significantly reduced.

        • i would have thought custom fan cruves would have been standard for you considering your handle

just tweak the fans to stay below and ramp above the range that produces whine

          • @desync: I have them, the PC is extremely quiet besides the coil whine when gaming. i don't think fans cause coil whine, otherwise it would be an easy fix.

            • @s1Lence: my mistake, i figured it would be related to the fan and that doesn't appear to be the case

it's a bit odd that both cards have the same problem, it could also be related to your power supply, do you have another power supply to test?

              • @desync: Like I said earlier:
(tested in 3 different PCs (AMD and Intel) with 3 different PSUs).

        • +1

Coil whine should have nothing to do whether the GPU is AMD or Nvidia. It's up to the manufacturers with their board design.

      • +1

My Gigabyte RX570 also had the coil whine problem.

    • +2

I had coil whine in a gigabyte 1060, which (no help to you) was fixed by new PSU in a new build.
The only non hardware change that made a difference was capping frame rates. Games that had higher than refresh rate FPS caused greater whine.

      • +1

Yeah, 144FPS on one of them has extreme coil whine but if I cap it at 60FPS it's bearable. Luckily I intend to use it on a 60hz monitor for casual games so I will just cap it across the board.

    • +1

My 6700 XT Hellhound has pretty bad coil whine as well especially at high FPS, however when I undervolt my card the coil whine is significantly reduced so maybe you can give it a try

      • +1

What do you undervolt it to? I tried the default undervolt option but it didn't help much.

    • Just frame limit your computer. My 1070 ti used to whine like a baby on wow loading screens

    • +2

Just do what I did and develop tinnitus…no more coil whine noticed

    • I got the sapphire pulse version and it has the coil whine, quite common i think? usually happens during heavy loading screens or high fps scenarios but then goes away.
there were some reviews that mentioned it.

  • +3

Still have the Radeon RX 480 (4GB version). Bought Half-Life Alyx on Steam for our Oculus Quest 2. Played first level and surprised that it runs reasonably ok but with annoying stutters here and there. Might have to upgrade GPU soon. Might have to use the Quest 2 more too.

    • +6

If you check your system monitoring, it's possible that the intermittent stutters are from the CPU.

    • Look up an AMD's FidelityFX VR tutorial on YouTube. You can get a 40-80% FPS boost with near identical visuals really easily. You just need to download a file and replace one with the same name in your game installation - this trick works with almost any VR game.

  • Thanks , I put the order in .

  • Thanks, caved for the free shipping! Now I can finish my build…

Yeah thanks. Missed that one. Build was "approved" and initiated after those deals.

        • +3

He didn’t tell you have to spend extra on a Deloren so you can travel back in time to purchase that XFX GPU.

          • @edfoo: ..or wait until it comes on special next (which is what I am doing). GPU's aren't insulin

            • @Jimmy77: u wont see xfx for $399 new anymore.. ple is sole retailer in au for xfx.. so it's gone.. forget it.. and get the next best

            • +1

@Jimmy77: Ntense he wants to finish his build. You don't know when the next XFX deal is coming in, don't think he wants to wait another 6 months for a new GPU so he can finish his build.

          • @edfoo: It was more expensive anyway?

  • +3

3060 should really follow this price, sadly it does not

    • 3060 is miner card bro… it wont go this low at least not until eth merge

  • +3

This card is bang for buck crazy good I got one last year after selling my 5700 for $1500, 1080p great 1440p decent even. Like 95% of gamers don't need 200 fps

  • How future proof is this card for playing games on average settings? Is there any reason to get this card if you're not playing games?

    • +4

Very future proof if you only average settings. It's a good card just that new games if expecting 4k or ultra settings with high frames rates is where you have to get best of the best all the time

  • Where was this when it came to tax time omg

I would not recommend buying from mwave. They had their warehouse manager leave and now shipment are delayed weeks. Had my last delivery delayed by almost 2 weeks (The items were In stock at mwave) and the only reason they delivered it that soon was because I had to threaten to contact ACCC for non-delivery of items.

If you can purchase elsewhere, do that.

    • +3

Had a very similar experience, ordered a bit over the years but last couple orders. Taken 1-2 weeks to be dispatched, finally got it shipped after 3 messages!

    • +1

Explains why my order last Sunday is still stuck at "processing", very slow for mwave. Don't order if in a hurry.

    • Thanks - I was just considering returning an Amazon order and buying Mwave to save $40, maybe not such a good idea!

    • +2

I bought from MWave and delivery was very fast. YMMV

    • I placed an order with Mwave on June 30 during the EOFY sale. Email notification for the delay on July 7 and order dispatched with tracking confirmed also on July 7. This is my first time doing business with Mwave but the delivery process seems ok to me. I don't expect a speedy or even on time delivery right after the EOFY sale period.

      • +2

doesn't matter what period of the year it is. If they say on the product page "ships in 24-48hrs" and I'm waiting almost 2 weeks for it, that's false advertising. If they are struggling to keep up with orders, they need to state that on their website BEFORE you purchase a product. sending an email regarding known delays AFTER you buy it is just dodgy practice.

    • Yep, terrible experience for me as well. Has been processing for 12 days. Was supposed to take 48 hours to ship as it was "in stock".

  • ok buy this good price

  • Can anyone recommend a good value RX 6600 XT that has RGB? I'm a sucker for RGB.

    • One of the things i was looking for on a 6600xt too lol but its so rare. I think the 399$ for the gigabyte version was the only rgb one

  • -5

    31mhs good buy

  • last so long , they must have plenty of stock

  • I was a bit worried to buy this card when I found out that it doesn't have a full backplate, can someone who has the card tell me if this has a negative effect on anything?

  • Has anyone's order been dispatched yet, and what is the eta on delivery

    • +1

Not yet , they said wait for supplier's stock to their warehouse , then they can dispatch .

      • That could take a while. So, wait for shipping but cancel and switch if a better deal shows up?

    • Has yours been shipped ?

      • No not yet, hopefully by tomorrow since they listed it as available back on the site again. Might try to call them tomorrow so that it doesn't go out of stock again without it being shipped. Has yours been shipped yet either?

        • no yet , no update as well .

          • @Giga: Mwave still waiting on shipment from supplier - no ETA yet

            • @Ntense: Stock has arrived, but will take another 1 - 3 days to get to shipping.

              • @Ntense: I got an email that there will a further 2-3 working days delay ……………. ( school holiday will be finished by then )

  • OOS now

Mwave is giving us the run-around on delivery of these cards. I should have read the reviews.

Just received my order(not this deal) from 5 July, today, on 19 July. The main cardboard box was damaged and it wasn't properly sealed(3/4 open). None of the product boxes inside were sealed with anti-tamper stickers…

  • My order from 7/7 was delivered last night.
