Probably my favourite phone I've owned to date based on price point. Great battery and camera. Has all the functionality except for wireless charging. It's even water resistant.

    • +3

If it had wireless charging I'd buy it. Any other phones with it at this price point?

      • +1

S20 FE is similar price on sale.

        • Link ?

        • This is better. I just replaced the S20 FE with this.

Camera is also quite an upgrade IMO. Only missing the zoom features the FE had. Haven't tried taking a video yet, but the 108mp camera is amazing.

      • +4

There was a time I was against this… I didn't think wireless charging was worth it. At the time, I had wireless charging on my previous phone for 2 years, and didn't have to use it once.

This was 3 years ago, when I pulled the trigger on a OnePlus 7 Pro, a phone that doesn't have wireless charging. Since then, I've realized the importance of wireless charging.

Charging stations are quite popular, and are often found in malls. Wireless charging is a convenient method of charging considering it's universal across phone brands. There have been many times when friends/family have benefited from a wireless charging point when on holiday, meanwhile I'm struggling with low battery and nowhere to charge.

Just putting it out there for anyone looking for a phone… Wireless charging is more important than you might think :)

        • +1

          good to know. thanks.

        • Wireless is so slow, compared to a plug

The only time it's good is when you can charge off your friends phone

          • +1

@Tleyx: This was my argument too. Wireless charging is slow, and that's an issue when you're at home. I have a 30w wired charger and wouldn't switch it out for a 5w wireless.

Charging off your friends phone is a fairly new technology. If I remember right, that's called wireless powershare on Samsung. I don't think it's very useful unless you want to charge 2-3% before they ask for their phone back lol.

Wireless charging stations on the other hand are very popular where I live. I find it hard to believe you haven't noticed them too. They may be slow, but 15 minutes of charging while you eat lunch at a food court will give you about 7% charge (depending on the phone). 7% is good enough for about 30 minutes of light usage, and can come in handy on the fly.

            • @Zackeroo: Yeah I hadn't noticed the wireless charging centres here in Brisbane I'll keep an eye out now I know they exist thanks

Wireless charging does make my phone heat up too which concerns me for the health of phone

              Overall I wouldn't say it's a must have for a new phone

              • @Tleyx: Hear isn't good, so it's fair if you don't like it due to that. Not sure if they're in Brisbane, but I'd assume they probably are :)

It's not a must have, but it's something to consider.

        • Why not just bring a portable charger with you? Most are pretty compact and will keep you juiced up throughout the day if you're running low on battery :)

          • @imtheonewhoknocks: It's easy to bring a portable charger when you plan out a long trip. I think it's understandable that sometimes, we end up exploring a bit too much, and find ourselves in new locations with a low phone battery.

You can't always plan ahead :)

Edit: As an example, I was looking for homes ~ 1 hour away just a few weeks ago. I found myself eating at a local food court, and noticed the wireless chargers there. I could have charged my phone while eating, but since I don't have wireless charging, I wasn't able to.

        • It's also pretty useful for longevity for phones. I have no idea how bad is battery deterioration through qi charging nowadays but, from experience, the usb port will fail before it becomes too noticeable. Changing a battery is easy, changing an usb port requires desoldering if you're lucky, or a pcb change if you're not.

          • @Wonderfool: That's true my phone lost it's port as it rusted out from juice spill and whilst I got around to getting it replaced I could use the wireless charging…. I forgot about that use.

            Maybe it is worthwhile

    • Just a damn great handset for the price!

    • Would this be better than an A53s at $529?

      • +1

I believed so when I made my purchase but I can't remember why…. I think it was the better camera?

      • +2

Yes. The processor here is substantially better than the A53s, and the camera.

  • +2

Price matching telstra i guess. But will it be cheaper next week on prime day?

  • Does this have a headphone jack?

    • +1

      No it doesnt

    • -5

      Bluetooth is the Future!

      • +13

        Drained batteries are the present!

        • Maybe the headphones need efficiency increased to make use of the small crappy batteries..

      • +7

i hate always having to recharge my earphones etc everyday cables all the way for me

  • Processor is okayish.

    • +1

Snapdragon 778G should be smooth and fine.

      • +1

It isn't. Read the reviews and user experience.

  • where cheapest for Samsung s21+ or ultra atm

  • +1

    108MP OIS (Wide)

That's crazy for mid range phone, even fold 3 doesn't have those many MPs

    • +6

MP count is not as useful as one might thought. Mostly comes down to the lens, senor, image processor.

      24MP is more than sufficient.

      • -3

No way, more MP the more you can crop an image.
Had 32MP and a massive sensor in my old old n8 was streets ahead for years to other phone handsets.

        • +1

Cropping the image is completely irrelevant if the pixels are a blurry, smeared mess when you digitally zoom in.

My S22+ takes far superior shots on a far lower mp sensor, and if you want to talk zoom, it's 10mp 3x optical will outperform that mess again.

          • -1

@[Deactivated]: Well, on the S22 Ultra I'm sporting, it takes excellent 108mp photographs.
Who even uses digital zoom these days?
If you don't have the MP, you can't crop as much, if any.

            • +3

@Damonator84: I am still shooting with a 24MP full frame body… Will outgun "insert your number" MP phones.

Good image quality is not due to how many MPs. It is how well the sensor captures light through he lens, and process it. If all 3 elements being equal (which is never that case) higher MP is likely to have an advantage.

MP is such a misperception to good imaging.

            • +1

@Damonator84: If you need to rely on cropping then you either aren't framing your shot correctly, or you're standing too far from the subject.

            • @Damonator84: I shoot in Raw.

            • @Damonator84: Now tell the class why the S22 ultra has a 10x, separate, telephoto sensor.

I have this phone, and have generally been happy with it. I'd maybe wait until you can get for $500 odd.

    Pros:
    - takes decent photos
    - SD card support
    - excellent screen and refresh rate
    - water resistant
    - good battery life
    - decent Snapdragon processor
    - local warranty
    - commitment to software updates for several years
    - 5g
    - good speakers
    - nice form factor and weight

    Cons:
    - camera can be slow (delay of 2 seconds approx sometimes)
    - no headphone jack
    - plastic body can feel a bit "hollow"
    - competitors have better specs for the price (mostly grey market)
    - it's big, which is good/bad depending on preferences

On a balance I'm pretty happy with it (Samsung Ed store + Buds 2 for $590 pre-order) Hopefully the camera lag can be fixed with a software update.

      • Do you think this is down to the processor? Or maybe lack of RAM? The processor in this phone should be up to the job I'd think. I can understand the other A series phones being a little slow.

          • @nasalspray: Of course it's software optimisation, the handset has had how many firmware updates since its launch a few months ago?

      • Even S phones lag compared to other Android phones. Something Samsung has never been able to shake

  • +1

I have this phone and everything is fine. But Im not 100% convinced of the battery life yet. Ive only had it about 2-3 weeks. Sometimes it just drains really fast and other times its great. I can't seem to pin point if its a certain app or 4g etc. Maybe a couple of updates will fix it down the track.

    • what's like the screen on time from a full charge?

      • +1

I was getting 8 hrs with it all turned on.. 120hz etc black theme for my best. 5-6 as an average.

  • Anyone know if this phone supports dual sim functionality like the s series

1 Esim and 1 Physical sim?

    • No dual sim.

  • S22 ultra 256gb available for $1699 - 500 trade in bonus - trade in value at JB

  • I see this does not come standard with a charger. Can I use my old S8+ charger? I think it is 15W.

    • +1

It will charge, but I don't know if it will fast charge. I got mine from the Samsung Government Employee site and got a "Free 25W Charger. Case and Glass protector"

      • Thanks. Yeah I missed that deal. Waited too long for my $50 promotional code which never come.

  • The A series are OK I guess. The battery life isn't great. Lack of wireless charging is a hassle. For similar money probably better value to get a older generation phone like the S20 FE. If you don't need the latest and greatest then buying an older generation phone gets more bang for buck IMO.

  • +2

OW has dropped their price to $597 so price beat is no longer an option, party's over.

  • +1

is this worthy upgrade for Pixel 2 XL?

    • $20 Woolies phone is an upgrade

    • Look at the A33 and the A52s as well

  • +3

Looks like they have artificially speed limited the SoC so as as not to get too close to the S21 FE model.

Peak Wi-Fi 6 AX speeds of 2800Mbps VHT160, but this maxes out at 480 (fewer Wi-Fi streams and VHT80 only)
    USB-C 3.1 but only implements USB-C 2.0
BT 5.2 but only appears to implement 5.0
Dual-band GPS but only appears to implement single band

    • They are careful not to out spec a higher priced phone

  • I just bought zflip3 from other deal :(( is it worth it to return to get A73 instead??

    • Completely difference kind of phone and difference grade.

      • I heard screen of zflip 3 can get damage easy :(

        • +1

So why did you buy it?

          • +1

@jackary: Trade in + $500 is good deal so er why not? 🥲
