    How much is a Qantas FF point worth?

      Pointshack value it at 1.8c per point. So 60k = $1080

        the value of points to the end user, is only worth as much as what you get for them, if 75000 points for a one way flight to singapore, thats usually about 300+ one way, thats essentially what you're paying for, its not a big bargain. dont forget that you're still paying for airport taxes on top of points, so… the points are actually worth even less, if you bother to calculate it out.

          It’s 68,400 points + $240 for MEL-SIN in Qantas business class. The cheapest I could find that flight for is $2635.

              @Arthas91: You’re not looking at reward fares, you’re looking at regular fares sold for points. PER-SIN in QF business on a classic reward is 57,000 points. You’re seeing the higher figures because all of the classic reward seats (which are limited) have been sold on that particular date.

              346,000 Qantas points would buy you a round-the-world business class OneWorld fare with change to spare.

        I like using 1c because it covers associated costs in my eyes. I look at it like this:

        For transactions where there's a surcharge, it's usually about 0.8% for my Visa (which earns $1 = 1qff) or 1.5% for my AMEX, which earns $1 = 1.25qff

        For surcharge free payments, I offset that against the card fees and misc costs of having products which earn qff. In reality it's WAY less than 1c because the $450 annual fee for my AMEX gets converted into a flight credit and my Visa is only $150-ish for a year but again it just wipes all of those misc fees here and there out by averaging 1c cost across the board, plus it aligns with the calculations out there such as on ozb.

        Thus for me, anything less than 1c in acquisiton cost is a net profit. How I use it from there is important in that if I use it for a cash equivalent of less than 1cpp, I lose value, so I just look at the numbers involved (eg $100 retail for 90,000 points is 0.9cpp so I'm good). It could go as high as several cents per point for flight redemptions and that's just extra good.

        But for me keeping everything at a minimum of 1cpp on both sides of the conversion just ensures I'm not being dumb and spending more than I get, and that's all the thought I put into it.

      1c if you sell them but you risk losing your account.
      A lot more if you can redeem business rewards flights internationally but it's very difficult if you're not a high status FF already and requires a lot of flexibility.

      Realistic value that's easily attainable is closer to 0.8c for hotel bookings, I got about 0.85c value booking a hotel paying with points, but usually Qantas hotels isn't cheapest so probably closer to 0.8c.

      $480 of value for paying $396, so still a profit even if you just buy it for the points.

        Economy or Biz? Probably should have gotten Biz. I got Perth to Fiji and back for 140K points + $330 in biz.

            @Headless: Did you select Rewards Only in the search option because if you paid for it using points, or points + pay, you're doing it wrong. You need to select Classic Flight Rewards

    Signed up earlier today.

    For those looking at signing up as well, just make sure you take note of the cancellation requirements and your billing cycle as per T&Cs:

    "If your plan is cancelled, you won’t receive a pro-rata refund of charges paid in advance for the remainder of your payment cycle, unless otherwise provided in our standard agreement and subject to your consumer law rights."

    • Good point but i got confused when they charge us pro-rata + one month bill in advance.
      So its true when people said you may get charged more than just 3x $99.
      I think i will keep an eye on the date 3 months from the activation, if waiting for the 3rd billing cycle generated it would be too late to cancel (otherwise you might get asked to pay the 4th bill for a portion you used a little).
      Does that sound right?

  • Has anyone signed up for two services for 120,000 points? I've looked at the T&C but nothing seems to come up.

    • Was trying to work that out but there is a line saying only 1 per QF frequent flyer and per account so would need to sign up to it separately.

      • Perhaps with a family account, then do a transfer. But is it worth a credit check being issued twice… Hmm…

    • FAQ's state only one service per QFF member - "Customers signing up to the $99 Qantas Promo Plan during the offer period are limited to 1 per QFF member ID and 1 per Optus account"

      • Yes, but we can have a couple of QFF accounts and perform a points transfer across family members. Optus accounts can be bypassed with a second email

        If you already have a roughly $50 phone plan, this is ~$200 additional cost for 60k points. Definitely a good deal.

      I joined the $39 plan for 5k points a while ago, got bonus points credited into my account a couple days before the 4th month bill, so end up just paying 3 months bill.

          Yes.

      • Your first payment will go through, when your new service is activated. They will take a fourth payment before your points hit your account.

    • that's what i'm wondering too. You either get a 4th mth bill, or risk cancelling too early and not getting the points.

      But signed up anyway, since it won't get billed till activation so gives me more time to mull it over.

    Planning to take home loan so not sure how taking this might impact my credit rating.

      Get the home loan first and then go as hard as you want with unsecured lending.

      It's not worth it to miss out on a home loan for a token offer like this in my opinion. Plus housing is cooling, lending is tightening if you can get it and afford it at a higher rate..

    • The number of enquires and how recent/frequent they are impact your ability to get credit - a credit provider (ie home loan lender) will see the recent enquires.
      Each bank have their own ways of measuring risk based off the info in your credit file.

      • There are third party ways like clear score and quifax that give their proprietary score and state your credit rating as a comparison against national or state average.

        Most banks would be hungry for some high risk lending as cost of living goes up but may squeeze on home loans because of realisable value issues in the property market.

    Compared to credit cards, this isn't the best deal to be honest. If you're in an area of 5G and you can get good speeds, then it's good. For those of us that have only 4G, it's a bit much when 60K / 70K Qantas credit cards can be had for $0 or $49 annual fees if you spot a good deal.

      I agree.

      Better off if you are an existing cc user to do a balance transfer offer, get cheap credit for 32 months, transfer more than your balance, pay it off in instalments, park the rest in a high interest savings Acc and don't touch it. Free money and points. Just hide or chop the card.

        Usually there’s a requirement to spend about $3K in 3 months to get the bonus points.

        Doing balance transfer means you can’t get free interest period with your $3K spending.

      The difference being you're not cycling through a credit card, with all the rigmarole and issues that can involve.

      • Some can have issues, some cannot, I've been churning for the last couple of years and have had a few issues but not enough to make me think it wasn't worth a few 10 minute phone calls to the bank, here and there.

        Again, depends on your priorities and how much one can tolerate with respect to that. Both this phone plan and credit cards have credit checks that go on your file.

          But banks can see who did the check. Be very surprised if they considered a post paid mobile plan the same as applying for multiple credit cards every year.

          Honestly though I don't think either have a big effect on getting a home loan, except within a year or two of applying.

          • @nigel deborah: Of course a phone plan isn't near a credit card in terms of severity but it's still there and the ding to the score still is.

            Yeah that's the advice generally, I mean folks churn CC's and say they have no issues with some lenders when they explain they are opening and closing quickly for the points. Others they do. I think probably best bet is to stop a year before applying for a home loan just to be on the safe side

      It might be worth it if you do both. You can only get a new credit card with a points every 3-4 months without causing credit rating issues.

      The 60k points is worth it if you value points at 1c per point, which means redeeming for economy reward flights, not gift cards or other stuff on their crappy points store.

      • Economy rewards flights are only worth 1c per point against Qantas own prices. Compare to the same fares on jetstar (or Rex) (including bags and food if you want), and the value plummets.

        And before you say it, jetstar have better on time performance these days, newer aircraft cabins, and if you buy food and bags the same extras.

        • I agree with you regarding domestic. Even well before COVID, I switched to Virgin. Better value when you buy your flights and better reward availability when redeeming.

          To clarify it would be worth 1c if your using it for international economy reward flights (minimum), while it is worth a lot more if you can swing a business class seat (tough without Gold, but doable if your willing to be flexible with airline/schedule).

            @randome: Even for international there are cheaper options with arguably the same or better service. But I take your point.

            Just wanted to highlight that, for people that mostly fly with cheaper airlines, it's likely not worth the $400 for 60,000 points if the intent is to redeem for economy airfares.

            • @nigel deborah: Economy domestic is well worth it, with either program, in my experience. $30/40 in fees, but generally far better availability than the cheap fares people here like to compare the flights with. I keep a stock of both program's points simply to facilitate easy domestic travel.

                @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Fair enough, if it works for you. I've got a pile of points but over the last yr I've had a very hard time spending them, since the value compares so poorly to the alternatives. Maybe I've been unlucky.

      Doesn't look like it. From the FAQ

      If you are an existing Optus mobile customer, you are eligible to take up a new SIM Only plan e.g., sign up an additional mobile service or upgrade from a pre-paid plan.

      If you were prepaid, you'd be eligible.

  • The last flybuys offer I took up, I got my points after 30 days although offer stated 90 days. This might be the same.
