First time i've seen the ember smart mug 2 discounted from RRP. Black one also for sale: https://www.amazon.com.au/Ember-Temperature-Control-Smart-1-…

If you want an overpriced mug that keeps your beverage warm, look no further. I have the travel mug 2 and for me it's a huge quality of life increase for those cold winter mornings going to work and at home. Not the same as a thermos because you can keep it at the same temperature the whole time.

I have Amazon GCs from CC deals so i've bought one for my girlfriend.

Bigger version (414mL) also 20% off: https://www.amazon.com.au/Ember-Temperature-Control-1-5-hr-B…

Never thought a coffee mug priced at $136 would be considered a "deal" lol….

Its the most ridiculous product I have where i don't think i'll want to go back to not having it…

    • +3

Yeh, bought one for $72 about 2 years ago…it’s pretty cool but wouldn’t have bought it if it was over $100. Battery is starting to get old on the cup now.

      Or one of these $12.99

I was looking at those but it doesn't keep it at a specific temperature, just heats the bottom of the cup/mug.

        • +1

Yeh, never tried one. Probably wouldn’t trust one of these things plugged in the computer at work…might set the building on fire. 😅

      • +2

Yeah those are terrible. They don't heat any regular mug up very much.

      • +2

the very first thing I always think of…..is the battery replaceable?
if not, this might go landfill/degraded after 1-3 years!

then the next questions would be:
do I really need it? how many times would I use it in the next 6 months or so?
if I don't use it that often, definitely it's like throwing away after sitting ideal for 1-3 years!

and then ending up impulse buy! :P

We are not far off from having a product that saves you from having scratch your own balls.

  • …but…why?

The 414ml mug is also on sale for $176.00 (20% off)-

    • Oh i didn't realise they had a bigger version too, i'll add it to the OP.

    Wtf..that's expensive……….and I'm quite tempted.

    Obvious jokes aside.

This is a good product, if you don't need one, fine but for those who do, this is one of the few that actually works and the price is appropriate for that.

    Now here's the cons:

    • Charging station durability is bad. It's two little pins on a weak spring, if they break, say hello to a $70 replacement, which is a scam, it's like $3 in components. If you open it, it's literally just the most basic power source ever but because of those terrible spring pins, it can break easily.

    • Battery life is bad (long term, active use is fine), you can expect about 2yrs before it starts flaking. That isn't just poor heating time, the whole unit will start behaving erratically even on the charge it can hold.

    • Last sip is stupidly hotter than the rest, too close to heating element and doesn't adjust based on volume (or it does but not fast enough). I don't drink it any more, just pour that out.

    • Seemingly the parent company isn't doing too well, no product revisions for obvious improvements (wireless charging?!), generally low inventory, poor support and now discounted pricing. Pretty sure the last firmware update ruined my mug and other users reporting the same, hasn't been a fix in over a month (don't update out of the box, forget it, totally pointless).

    Pro:

    • Works great otherwise for about 2yrs. 95% of your drink is kept at a great temp.

    • Flavour neutral

I've had v1, v2 and several coasters (sigh). I'll get another one from this sale but that might be the end, 2yrs from now I'll pray for another solution.

      Strange concept; Coffee mug firmware.

Thanks, was about to buy one after wanting it for a while, but not spending this much for glorified landfill. Phone ewaste is bad enough as it is, now we have mugs with 2 year lifespans. 🤦‍♂️

      • Well it won't be landfill in 2yrs, it just won't work as a temperature controlled mug. You can use it as a normal mug indefinitely :)

You can technically replace the battery but that's beyond my comfort zone, some people have done it on the subreddit.

    • Hmm interesting, my ember travel mug 1 started boot looping just before the warranty expired so i was lucky to get the travel mug 2 under warranty from support. Will look out for issues, so far none on my charger plate.

      • +1

Milage will vary of course, you may well get 3yrs+ etc.

From my experience and general consensus from the small subreddit community, 2yrs is about the standard.

Yes I believe boot looping is related to poor battery, that happened to my v1 also. My v2 is a bit different but is getting worse.

It will heat on the charger but not off it, the second I take it off, it begins infinitely resetting itself. I think it will stop working all together soon but it's possible the v2 has different behaviour and may continue to work on charger.

As I use it almost exclusively at my desk, it's been ok, as it can maintain temp fairly well still. But that is why I've needed more chargers, I'm consistently placing it on/off and the pins are crapping out quicker.

        • Oh that's what you meant by the battery going bad. I thought it was just charge issues. If its the boot loop issue then yeah that's really bad, that's what happened to my Travel Mug 1.

    Just drink your coffee faster.

    • Exactly what I want to say LOL

  • Dishwasher safe? No?

    • No and even if they said its dishwasher safe i wouldn't put it in there.

  • Good grief

Was very very tempted to buy an Ember mug, then learned about all the issues…and bought one of these for my desk instead:
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000701873520.html

It's mains-powered so obviously not portable, but fantastic for a desk, with its 3 temp settings. And you can use whatever mug you want.
It's one of those things you don't think you need, until you use it and then you can't live without it.
Esp for people like me who take their time drinking a mug of coffee
