The cubic capacity of the bag is 35 litres, which is perfect for a week away if you are not an overpacker and don't need a lot of cold weather clothing.

    When did holdalls start getting called Duffel bags?

    This isn't even made out of Duffel fabrics.

    • +8

      When did a carry bag start getting called a holdall? Lol.

      • -1

        According to Merriam-Webster, since 1851.

        Duffel bags, as clearly three neggers don't know, are traditionally made from Duffel wool, (named after it's origin in Duffel, Belgium - think Duffel coat), or a heavy duty fabric such as canvas, and is top-opening with a drawstring. Became very popular with the military.
        And to answer the next question: since 1768 according to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duffel_bag

        • +1

          On what planet? Certainly nowhere i'm from. A+ for the research though. :)

          • @Fredorishi: California and east coast Australia, according to this: https://military-history.fandom.com/wiki/Duffel_bag
            which also gives vivid descriptions of the bags that cannot be mistaken.
            "A duffel bag (also spelled duffle bag (or kit bag or gym bag)) is a large cylindrical bag made of cloth (or other fabric) with a drawstring closure at the top.
            The name comes from Duffel, a town in Belgium where the thick cloth used to make the bag originated."

            "The duffel bag acquired considerable status in the surfer sub-cultures of post-WW II California and east coast Australia….
            …Australian duffel bags of the early 1960s were made of canvas and were usually light khaki or faded ochre in colour. Dispensing with the use of rope to pull the eyelets of the top together, the surfie would simply hold the throat of the duffel bag—containing towel, swimming trunks and other personal belongings—in one hand and sling it over his shoulder…

            I know they are also called that in Britain, and my father has just verified that they were called this when issued to the Australian Army in Vietnam.

            This site also gives a description with practical example of use: https://ksww1.ku.edu/what-was-a-kit-bag/
            "The British ‘kit bag’ was the equivalent of the American duffel bag, a large canvas bundle that could be closed with a tie at the top end and secured with a padlock, in which soldiers would stow all of their clothing and possessions that they couldn’t take with them to front-line service. The kit bags would be stored at a depot pending the soldier’s return. "

            Perhaps the marketing department at Puma has picked up on the term 'kit' for 'equipment' and misinterpreted it as sports kit (uniform).

            And as it's Amazon Prime Day, this is from the UK site:
            "Product description

            The Duffel bag has been used for years by members of the military worldwide and is one of the first thing many new recruits have been issued. The Duffle bag was named after a town in Belgium were the material was made. This bag is known by many other names now, in the Army they are known as kit bags and in the Navy and Marines they are often known as Sea bags. The heavy duty cotton fabric means that these bags last you a lifetime. In the 40's and 50's the Duffel Bag became increasingly popular by those outside of the Army and Navy. Seeing how durable these are a lot of Surfers started using them for carrying kit to the beach and they soon became a must have item. As the years have gone buy people have inherited these bags from 60 years ago and they are still going strong and this has brought the need for new ones to made in the same design from the same materials as their popularity has increased."

            The British Army now issue a "Black Bag" of extra equipment to troops going to war, this Government site describes the Black Bag as a "giant Holdall" and the picture shows a horizontal, zippered bag with two hand-carry handles, just like the one on sale here posted by the OP.

              @sam buster:

              I'm from a military family and grew up on Aus, NZ and UK military bases and duffel bags are very common in that community. I remember as a kid we'd all borrow our dad's duffel bags because the idea of simple tube bag with a drawstring and military colours was very cool back then.

            • +1

              @sam buster: I wasn't questioning "duffel bag" I was questioning "holdall"

            @Fredorishi:

            On what planet? Certainly nowhere i'm from

            Maybe you should get out more. 'Duffel bag' has been quite a common term around my friends and family for decades.
            In fact the last time I bought a duffel bag I went around some bag shops and asked to see their 'duffel bags' and they showed me some. So I think it's just you.

            • +1

              @1st-Amendment: Yes but do you also call it a "holdall" which is what I was referring to?.

              • -1

                @Fredorishi:

                Yes but do you also call it a "holdall" which is what I was referring to?.

                Never really heard that term before. Bag, suitcase, backpack, daypack, Duffel, sportsbag, Tote, handbag, laptop bag, bumbag, manbag are the most common bag types/names I can think of off the top of my head. I remember that 'brief cases' were a thing years and years ago, but haven't seen one of them for ages.

                • +1

                  @1st-Amendment: Hence my asking what planet Sam was from. Lol. He kind of changed the topic from "holdall" back to duffel and I guess I wasn't specific thats what I meant. Everyone uses the term "duffel bag" I get that one..

    • -1

      When did holdalls start getting called Duffel bags?

      wtf is a holdall?

      My father was in the military, they've always been called Duffel bags since I was a kid.

  • +5

    Buying lot of stuff without need…. hope I am saving ;)

    • +1

      yeah, me too. :P

      buy now think later

  • I have been using woolworths carry bag in gym for very long time and finally got this bag. Thanks OP.

  • Hey whoa: why can I buy one on my PC/browser, and another in my mobile app? Aren't I only supposed to be able to buy one. Will they honour it?

    Edit: or are the black and grey versions considered separate lightning deals/items?

    • +1

      You can buy 1 of each colour, considered separate.
