I knew this this would have happened that's why we pumped last night. Have another on the partner's phone which they sent the cancellation.

  • +5

Fuel locks are getting cancelled. Head office sending out communications to all stores to not honour Wantirna fuel locks.

  • +6

Well, Eight Mile Plains here I come!

    • eight mile plains! eight mile plains! all hail!

  • Do they remove fuel lock today to fix error or something

  • +2

    They have removed the lock:

Unfortunately, what we have also witnessed is numerous online sites and social media posts actively encouraging customers across Australia to breach our terms and conditions through manipulation of the My 7-Eleven App’s Fuel Price Lock function.

Following a thorough investigation overnight and in line with our terms and conditions, we have made the difficult decision this morning not to honour all Fuel Price Locks (Special Unleaded, E10, Extra 95 & Supreme+ 98) related to the Wantirna store on Wednesday 13th July between 3.58pm and 6.40pm.

    • +20

thorough investigation = hopping onto news.com.au and saying oh sh-

    • +8

Number of online sites actively encouraging = laughs in OzBargain

  • +5

Wow this is the first time that it has happened. So lucky I filled up to the max yesterday

    • +3

ya but my fuel containers are now lonely

  • +1

So clearly they are able to identify and remove individual fuel locks. Next time we will know!

    • +4

They only removed fuel locks for Wantirna.
But because they shut the whole app down last night it proves there is no way to detect spoofing

      • +1

        there “was” no way.

surely they’d be investing in some detection now after this debacle

      • +6

If they wanted to they could ban the users that lock in @ Melbourne and then fill up in Sydney 20 minutes later.

        • +1

I had to fly back home, thats why I had to wait until today to try the filling up and now its gone D<. But I swear I was there yesterday evening.

  • I tapped out last night and used the lock before I was on empty. Glad I did!

    • -1

I live in Wantirna and didn't get to use my lock in. Thanks for that.

are you telling all of OzB's that you've never locked outside of your area?

      • -7

Correct. I have never locked in where I am not physically located at the time of locking in.

        • +6

Same here - I've never locked-in while on the astral plain.

On a serious note though I get the concern. I alleviate some of my lock-in guilt by remembering the a**hole tactics 7 Eleven have used against their lowest paid workers in the past.

@ModBot: It may be hard for you to understand but some people live to higher moral expectations.

        • +7

Guess you better call 1800 247 711, and then complain that way. Give them your address and everything and have them reinstate it.

          • @ATangk: That'll be my next step. Cheers.

          • +3

@ATangk: but they’re saying that because it was a pricing error no one should be eligible to use it, so it doesn't matter if you’re in the suburb or not - they’re still gonna cancel regardless

            • @I Smell Pennies: The 'unfortunate' bit reads as if they might have honoured it if it wasnt spammed on OzB…

    • +1

I am pretty sure if you are a legitimate user (say you use the lock within a reasonable distance of Wantirna), you can complain to 711 HQ and get the difference back. This is probably their way of making it difficult for people and reducing their losses.

If I were you, I would still go ahead and fill it up, and preferably pay with a credit card just in case you have to resort to chargebacks.

      • They will say it was a pricing error and we could not honour it. But worth a try if you really keen.

    • If you live in Wantirna, should have lined up like a legitimate user.

      • You would have hoped so but my home address and point of lock in is around 2kms from this servo and yet still cancelled. Plus I use an Android phone which I believe is not hackable for this anyway.

    • +2

man i feel your pain but if this happened to one of my locals i think i would just find it amusing that a huge mass of ozbargainers briefly hovered in my suburb all in the spirit of saving a buck

      • +1

        $1/litre, up to $150/lock.

      • you don’t just save a buck. No one goes there to fill up 1L. I’m sure everyone is saving at least $20. Some upwards to $150

    • you're welcome

    • 7-Eleven said the pricing was an error which was incorrect and mistakenly posted. 7-Eleven trying to put the blame elsewhere. Weak and transparent!

  • Omg my fuel lock is cancelled, but I keep the screenshot, can I still use it ?

    • +1

      nope

    • NO!! You can’t

    • the screenshot is always the same.. if they removed the lock it won't work.

    • Have you tried?

      • +1

The barcode is for your account. Not a barcode for the fuel lock.

  • +1

Amazing - didn't think 7/11 had this level of competence.

Scottish Deer hound - HEY THIS IS A DOG

    • How is this competence they're doing a blanket reset on any wantirna locks including legitimate ones?

      • +2

It's 7/11. Anything of this level is unprecedented for them.

        • +1

True they can't even pay their workers properly

      • +1

Bit hard for them to distinguish what's genuine or not. Let's not forget even if they were able to record and retrieve the GPS coords (I think iOS wouldn't allow this to be retrieved), hey the helicopters would've been showing something similar.

So it's fair to say they turn a blind eye with the helicopters are making them money but go bulk cancelling fuel locks when it doesn't.

  • DAMNNNNNNN they removed the lock

  • Anyone know they got rid of everyone's locks in the app or just the ones locked in at Wantirna?

    • +1

Just Wantirna ones. Other more "legitimate" ones are not affected.

  • +11

Can confirm that it's only Wantirna fuel locks that were cancelled. Had an account with a non-Wantirna lock in that has been left unaffected.

Not angry about this though, easy come easy go as they say.

    • nice thanks for confirming

    • +3

Yea . My locks from Monday still there. Just 50c more 😝

  • +4

I used it last night…. just in case. Damn!!

  • +3

Last night an incorrect price for unleaded fuels was posted in error at our Wantirna store and we subsequently saw a high volume of fuel price locks in connection with this error.

How was a price error live for so long, along with media coverage, and cars queueing? 🤔

    • +4

Well the staff in the servo said it wasnt a mistake customer testimony

So i am not so sure if they are really within their rights to cancel as they said here

      • Whilst I've abused my chopper for the last few years, I'd have to play devils advocate and say they are technically within their rights to cancel the locks for those who've 'used a chopper' as the T&C's do state;

"You must not manipulate the location information reported by your Device when using the App (even if such manipulation is a feature of the Device, for example, under “developer options”). 7-Eleven may suspend or cancel your 7-Eleven Account if 7-Eleven has reasonable grounds to suspect that the location information reported by your Device has been manipulated."
Additionally the terms state that if the fuel lock is clearly an error (example of it being 1c/pl), then they have the right to cancel (questionable if they can say so for these prices, but it would be under cost price so I'd expect them to say so)

So really, the issue here is that 7/11 should allow all those located in the vicinity of the fuel station the ability to redeem the fuel lock (unless they can clearly state that it was an OBVIOUS error - I'd personally say not given there are pics of the price board at the servo showing the same prices on the app, and thus it wasn't solely an app issue). The maximum radius 7/11 uses for the fuel lock is 250km, but I'd say a fair radius would be the 5 closest stations, and thus anyone filling at those 5 stations and then submitting a claim on the app should be compensated.
For the rest of us. Tough luck, the glory days of locking in and having a 100% chance of using it for the next 7 days are gone. Next time we need to 'fly our choppers' whilst sitting in the car (preferably not the drivers seat) on the way to the servo.

        • That is exactly what they should have done. Unfortunately, I feel 7/11 could not be bothered filtering the list of fuel lock and decided to do a blanket cancellation. The statement they given to the stores mentions that it is a clear price error which I agree I do not think it is.

"you should not suggest to customers they have done anything wrong as they may have locked in this price legitimately, however as the price was a clear error, we are within our rights to cancel it."

Sad times indeed, but yeah will definitely fuel up as soon as I fuel locked to not get it cancelled!

          • +1

@Contrice: yeah I locked it in (for myself and like 5 family members/friends) as soon as I saw it, given that 7/11 has been quicker to act on these errors than before, and got booted when locking in a 2nd one for myself.
Was happy that I had it locked in, and a bit bummed I didn't fill in last night but would've only got 30l in.
Next time I wont wait though. Will make a second lock and keep that for the week incase it isn't cancelled.

surely we all must've known this would've ended someday. thankfully they haven't caught onto the spoofing nor pulled the plug on locking altogether so we still have some time left.

  • +15

Its annoying when I went out of my way to go near Wantirna to do a legitimate price lock. Its not an error when you sell petrol at that price for hours, an error is when they fix it after the first sale.

    • bad luck ay

    • +1

Yep … wasted some km to drive a bit closer. Not happy :-(. Stuck to the Terms and Conditions and get put in the basket with all the choppers.

  • Can confirm, my mate lost his fuel lock too.

    • +9

I feel sorry for the guy who lost his chance at the civil engg internship due to this!

  • +1

Same boat here, I actually locked as not far away from Wantirna, both are gone now :(

Should've just pumped yesterday at a closer 7/11 with the lock instead of waiting…

    • Me too!

    • +4

Yeah, that's my main takeaway from this - fill up immediately on abnormally good prices. If it's more than (say) 30 cents per litre better than the usual prices, then for a 50 litre tank (like my vehicle), that's a saving of $15, which for me is the transition point where it probably makes it worth going slightly out of your way to fill up. In this case, at 50 cents/litre, it would have been $25, so fill up straight away, before it can be cancelled. Less than 30 cents/litre better than average, just fill up whenever it's easy and convenient.

      • +1

fill up immediately on abnormally good price

pretty much, not gonna wait on it next time

this is the first time 7-11 has done this (cancel the lock)

        • This isn't entirely accurate.

They cancel locks every now and then on some accounts before. But not at this scale.

Either on purpose or a bug

    Just received email from 7/11

Thank you for your ongoing loyalty through the My 7-Eleven program.

This is a decision not taken lightly and we apologise to those customers who have legitimately locked in the price, which was incorrect and mistakenly posted.

You will notice in your App that all Fuel Price Locks have been reset, and the functionality is now available to take advantage of once again.

    Regards,

    The My 7-Eleven Team

Lucky I filled up last night!

    • So mad I didn’t . Wth

  • Wth I just got this

    Dear O.

First the S22 Ultra gets cancelled, now 7/11 price lock!

  • +11

You just know they woke up the coders in India last night to work overtime to fix this problem.

Pulling the plug or breaking whatever API they use was a nasty "fix" that clearly was a last ditch effort to buy time.

    • +2

The simple fix if it was an actual price error would be to change the price🤦‍♀️

If only they'd thought of it.

  • Just got an email from 7/11, basically, they are saying blah blah blah…and GFYM, we do not honor the price. This reminds me of the Go Catch disaster marketing decision.

    • What happened with Go Catch?

  • +1

everyone's log got removed, even my old ones which had 1 day left, oh well half my family filled up so we're still up by $100+, only 2 people didn't get a chance since they didn't need to fill up yet

  • +1

I successfully used my fuel lock just after 12:00 this arvo. Saved about $50 on a tank. Phew!

    • +1

Intreresting, I fiilled up at 10 AM snd was told the disount was not working!

      • wow, that's bad.. how you end up paying the bill? did you step back and relock a new lowest rate with amended gps, or you had to pay the orginal full amount?

        • The whole shebang!
          Full amount.
At about the highest amount it had been lately!

  • the bad guys (Nintendo error) at least gave us $50 credit, 7-11 didn’t give us a free $1 coffee?

  • +7

Definitely understand the complaints about losing this discount but the bigger picture here is this may well have spelled the end of our chopper licences

    • It may still

      • That’s what I mean, maybe should have said “may well spell” instead of “may well have spelled”

        • Yep, I re-read…. :)

  • +2

Luckily I pumped once yesterday before the cancellation

  • -1

Still get error A01 trying to lock for 183.5, have restarted the app (and iphone) with no success…

    • Probably blocked you

  • -1

Well they would've lost too much money

Hopefully we'll still get to use price locks via the chopper for many years to come

  • +16

Look on the bright side: Now we have indisputable precedent. From now on, I'm immediately driving to 7-eleven to fill up if something like this happens again, doesn't matter if I have half a tank left, or if I have 3/4s of a tank left. Previously all we could do was speculate what they would do, "will they? won't they?", but now we know.

I managed to get a successful lock on the Wantirna price, but waited on filling up because I still had plenty of fuel left. I'm never making that mistake again.

    • +2

It's the beginning of the end. We've had a good run. Good knowing you all.

    • On 10L you'll save $5, not much reason to top up imo.

  • -1

Too bad I was half empty I dare not to mix the fuel!
