I think this is a good price.

  • Does it support WIFI 6?

    • No, but most people don't need it.

      • Why not? Most recent devices support wifi 6. Isn’t wifi 6 faster and more range?

        • Yes, but it isn't needed for most uses. We run everything including TV off regular wifi with no issues.

        • Range is marketing, WiFi 6 supports both 2.4 GHz and 5Ghz, 2.4 GHz has longer range, but reduced speed.
Now for speed, "most" NBN connections are 50mbps or slower and some devices will be wired.
So it's correct that "most" don't need it.

Don't buy this. I regret buying it.
The only way to set this up is with the google home app on your phone, you can't use your laptop or desktop. And you can't change any settings or set it up unless its connected to the internet. EXCEPT some settings like the WAN settings for NBN can ONLY be changed while disconnected from the internet and good luck with that. I ended up having to double NAT my home network because I could not get it to work without the Optus router in front of it.
Save yourself the hassle just get a normal router and some google home speakers.

Mine works fine just connected to the NBN box.

If your ISP requires VLAN Tagging, then you need the ISP router connected and then the Google Wifi after it. I have this with my TPG NBN. Not ideal, but I didnt research it enough at the time. But it still works fine, its been rock solid and setup was quick and easy. Other ISPs will be able to have the Google setup direct into their NBN box though. So do your research first.

If your ISP requires VLAN Tagging

Choose one that doesn't. There are lots and it's easy to switch.

          • @jv: Yep thats also an option. I didn't bother as my connection has been rock solid and cheap.

            • @nafe: I found More Telecom to be cheaper than TPG if you are a CBA customer.

        • Nest Wi-Fi was updated to support VLAN IDs.

          • @Twix: Good to hear, I've got the original Google Mesh.

            • @nafe: Google Wi-Fi was also updated.

              • @Twix: Ha! I'll go check it out later. Wish I'd paid attention lol. Hopefully it's as solid as it has been with the TPG router in place :)

    • Shouldn't need the Optus router. When we first got NBN, I used the standard included router, but the wifi signal was poor in the house unless you were close to the router. So I got a Deco mesh system instead and sent the router back and got a refund on it. Works really well.

I imagine these work in a similar way to Deco, where you can just connect directly to the NBN box and you won't need the router.

      • You're correct. I would be using a NBN -> Google setup but I want the 4G fallback, so run NBN -> Optus -> Google. If you don't want the Optus modem/router features like 4G fallback I was told by Optus I didn't need to use it.

        • Mine wouldn't work without the Optus router, I think the biggest issue for me is that if it doesn't work for some reason its incredibly difficult to troubleshoot. The only thing you can do is reset over and over again but ymmv

    • I have two sets and find no issues, though some older 2.4 ghz stuff has problems (like my vacum) connecting.

  • Is this good for instantaneous feedback for smart lights like LIFX, Nanoleaf etc? Is this similar to something like thread network? Sorry I'm a noob!

    • +1

      yes, it integrates different devices.

I have a mixture of google nest, kasa and hue devices all controlled via Google Home.

  • Was a big fan, wouldn't go anywhere near again.

    New model inevitably coming soon.

  • Yay! Been waiting a while for these to come down in price! Thanks op!!

  • What's the resale value on a Google Nest Wifi access point?

Wondering if I get buy two of these (2x routers, 4 access points) - keep the 2 nest routers, and sell the other 4 access points (say $100 each?)

Also - does anyone know if Thread is working yet on these? Doesn't seem to be much info on the internet at present.
