  • Good timing. Didn't know this type of tool existed but I do need to remove a garden bed and fill it in with grass. Hopefully this works well. Looks like Shopback has 8% cashback for Lawn and Gardening right now. Can't hurt to try.

  • thanks, been on the lookout for one for ages. cheers op.

  • Do these actually work? Not very good with plants or lawn but this sounds too good to be true

    • +3

Yeah, heaps of lawnies like Ben Sims rate them, load it up with plugs and tip them out easy as.

      • +4

        Tik tok? Ugh

        • +2

Think Ben is a YouTuber.. not TikTok

    • +1

Yes, but as with anything lawn related they hibernate in winter. So these will be highly effective during optimal growing seasons.

  • Grabbed one. cheers!

  • +4

    *Not for bedroom

    • +2

Can be used in the outdoors :)

    • +2

What did they say about “your arse is grass and I’m a…” or something 😉

  • +24

Thought this was a pogo stick

    • +4

      Same hahah

    • +3

It would be fun if adding this to the bottom.

    • +1

Same, was going to say it, but you beat me to it, lol.

  • Cheers op, had no idea this existed. Grabbed one.

  • Picked one up, thanks

  • +7

Another one for the list things you didn’t know you needed until 2am Sunday morning on Ozbargain…

    • +2

3am here. I have $20 worth of bulbs from Aldi I was supposed to plant 6 weeks ago. Beats digging holes with your heel like you used to do standing around the field during PE class in high school…

  • Is the purpose of this for propagating existing lawn without having to buy seeds?

    • Can be yes. If you have an established lawn already and wish to push it out in size, you can take plugs and plant them.
Can also use it to repair bare patches quicker

      • What do you do to fill the plug the was healthy? Do i need to put normal soil in again to fill the hole?

        • +2

Where the plug is going, pull a plug out of there so you're just swapping them. If there's dead turf on top, I'd clear that bit away but you'll still get a soil plug to swap over. Nice tight fit that way.

          • @whitelie: Yeah i just wanted to make sure, thanks, i bought one!

  • Shopback 8% (IF they pay). Thanks, bought one

  • Back up to $170

  • Showing $169.50 for me now..

  • +1

Bugga, missed out in this deal

  • Ah nuts, oh well the ground at my house is soooo stone filled it would likely break in 2 minutes

    • +1

just get a off cut pipe and weld a handle - less the $20 if you got the equipment.

  • Great price. I paid $135 this time last year.

  • +4

Just a word of caution - doesn't work well for buffalo lawn

    • -2

But that's 99% of Australian lawns..

    • Was feeling good about my 2am purchase, till I read this

      • +1

Yup, even the product description mentions not recommended for St Augustine, which is the American term for buffalo.

    • Yes will need a lawn that spreads well.

    • +1

Came here to say this. Not designed for buffalo. It lacks the underground “bits” to make this work. I say bits, but there is some term for them I can’t remember at the moment.

      • +3

        Buffalo spreads by surface runners.
Couch spreads by surface runners AND underground runners.
It is the underground runners which will allow the sod to spread when transplanted to a bare patch.

You probably need another tool (available in amazon as well) that cuts wider for buffalo. This way the chance to grab the buffalo surface runners is higher

  • just in time for the next Mardi Gras

  • I got one earlier in the week - thought it was a good but but didn't realize it's usual price.

Hoping to use this to do some pluggin' but also as a chunkier aerator to a clay heavy backyard.

What would be suitable infill to try and provide some alternate soil to the plug gaps in the clay soil? Throw down some gypsum into the holes and top dress with a Sandy loam to break it up a bit?

Lawn is doing really well, but I'm summer get big cracks in parts of the backyard when it dries out. Keen to try and address this a bit.

    • +2

Top dressing mix. For clay it's 80% sand with remainder as compost. Up to you if buying pre-mix or blending your own is cheaper.

Time of year to do it is start of growing season. Too early and you'll stress the lawn.

  • +1

For buffalo u just use an axe or clever a cut a one foot square and put the piece on the area u want it to grow together with some fertilise soil.

    No need for this tool.

I got one to aerate my soil though.
Hole is a little big but if u use the common aerater it usually get block because the hole is too small.

  • kikuyu is fine?

    • +4

I challenge you to find any device that wouldn't successful transfer Kikuyu!

I personally use a tent peg or stick.

Stab a few holes place a few bit of Kikuyu in, water..Nek minute, your whole house is Kikuyu!

    • Kikuyu will bloody well go wherever you don't want it to without much help lol, let alone where you do

  • -4

If you own a power drill I find these types of augers much better value (at $18), less effort and way more fun.
You can get different length and widths for whatever you're doing.

    • +6

Different purpose. This pulls out plugs for transfer, yours just cores the soil.

      • -2

Not really. Pulling out plugs is pretty much the only thing it can't do. But it will still perform all the other functions of this tool, faster and at a third of the cost.
        * A long handled bulb planter for spring and fall bulbs Check
        * A weeder for deep taproot weeds like wild onions, thistles and dandelions. Check
        * A planting tool for annuals, ground covers, vegetables and plants sold in flats and trays. Check
        * makes a great drip edge fertilizing tool for your trees Check
        * allows you to work from a standing position, saving your back and knees Check

        • +5

yes everything except the primary purpose of the plugger, grass transplanting. no doubt there's a place for a good VFM auger, but its not a turf plugger

          • @GenghisGun: Yes it won't remove plugs, I get it.
But this tool is marketed as a "5-in-1 Lawn Tool and Garden Tool, Bulb Planter, Weeder, Sod Plugger, Annual Planter, Soil Test".

So although plugging might be the primary purpose you need it for, sod plugging is only one of it's functions. Others here may be considering buying it for the other functions. I'm simply offering a cheaper, quicker alternative for those other functions.

            • +1

@stuckster: The main purpose of this device is to transplant plugs of lawn.

You're correct if you're using the auger as an aerator, but I wouldn't be using it to get rid of weeds. You're going to be essentially still leaving it in the soil profile and promote spread and growth.

If you're looking for an manual aerator/corer, I'd consider something similar to this with longer tines to pull soil out as opposed to grinding it up…

Grew my entire 100m² front lawn with this tool pulling plugs from my 20m2 backyard lawn. Awesome tool

    • What grass and how long did that take?

  • can't believe i missed this during the night! a steal. hoping comes back in stock. who was the seller on Amazon? ProPlugger? can't see their store

    • +1

1 left at $66. Get in quick

  • Slightly more expensive for $65 delivered https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/aw/d/B003MRTVUI/ref=ox_sc_act_i…

    • +1

I've seen heaps of stuff lately on Amazon come up at crazy good prices but the seller/store has just launched so not sure if there would be any issues there? I know there's a huge safety net with Amazon, just makes me hesitant

      • Ordered mine last night, and was shipped via DHL a few hours later from ….. China let's see how now it goes

  • Back at $60, only 1 in stock

  • Has anyone received this yet? On amazon it says it was delivered yesterday but I was home all day and never received it.

    • +1

Mine came on the 29th, ordered on the 24th.
A lot of people on the east coast were saying it took 3 days.

    • +1

Contact Amazon and they should be able to tell you were it is. They delivered an electronics order of mine to a house one street over and could tell me from the GPS scan log where it had actually been delivered. Went down there and my stuff was there sitting in the guys lounge :)

    • I'm in the same boat, DHL tracking has it marked as Delivered to Melbourne - I'm in Brisbane. Shipping address is definitely correct. Did you have any luck?

      • Not yet. Haven't heard back from seller and haven't received the item.

        • +1

          Same here.
Ordered last week. Tracking showing Delivered in Adelaide on Friday (Im located in NSW).
Messaged the seller and had no reply.
Ill give it a few more days and then will lodge a claim through Amazon for a refund.

          • +2

@Malts14: I lodged a claim with amazon 48 hours after the seller failed to reply and after I called DHL who confirmed the that the tracking number I had was never for my address or under my name.

I suspect this is some kind of scam so I wouldn't wait, just contact Amazon- they've already approved a refund for me.

            • @Pklz: Thanks for the update mate. I thought it looked suss when i ordered but for that price was prepared to risk it. Will lodge the refund now. Cheers!

              • @Malts14: Were these orders through the original post from ProPlugger or the one posted later on from the new/different seller? I got mine no problem and know of a few others also but that was from the original link. The one posted in the comments was from a seller that hadn't been on Amazon long at all.

I've seen heaps of stuff that I'd normally buy somewhat regularly for really cheap prices from sellers that have recently launched and haven't purchased as it looked suss. Seems to be scammers are hitting Amazon hard

                • +1

@whitelie: No not through the Original Post. Through the second one. I just lodged and had a refund approved also - was pretty quick so no idea what the scammer gets from this?
The seller is jiayongchangdghuut. You are correct, new seller with no history listed.

                  • @Malts14: Yeah, no idea what they stand to gain from it as Amazon would have to be one of the best companies around for refunds and disputes

                    • @whitelie: Probably relying on a bunch of people to fall for the false tracking number and believing the parcel was stolen from their door than actually never being delivered.

                  • @Malts14: thanks, I nearly pulled the trigger on that one a few times but it looked sketchy
