Have you been hitting that BÖNG again, jv?

      • Ä ?

        • They meant bång

          • @eloque: Bongs and Bangs are both good.

    • +3

Nō, I think that "POÄNG!!!" is just the noise it makes when it snaps under the weight of an individual that exceeds its design limit

"…use by persons weighing up to 110 kg"

This one looks fairly strong, but I've seen alternative cheap brands of the similar design chair legs eventually snap with fatigue under a larger person. It was not good at all.

      • +1

110kg.. don't think the chair is the issue (and obviously not designed for people over that weight).

        May get one.

      • Nō, I think that "POÄNG!!!" is just the noise it makes when it snaps under the weight of an individual that exceeds its design limit

damn I just thought of this joke. well done. 😂

    • Did you mean pång?

      • Sam?

  • +4

Great deal!!!! Also interested in the flip-flops TBH….

    • me too!

    • the flip flops?

      • +1

You have to click the “Source” link in the post to make sense of this.

    • +2

Considering how much they're pushing the "Aussie" angle in the press release it's too bad they're calling them FLIP FLÖPS instead of THÖNGS.

      • Thångs

  • +1

Does this include the covers for poang chair?

    • I doubt it but could be wrong. It might be 50% off all colourways for the 3 versions though - source says this.

IKEA is offering an unmissable 50% discount on one of its one of its most iconic products, the POÄNG armchair, which launched in 1976. The famous curves of the springy POÄNG bentwood frame have been a constant feature of Australian homes for almost five decades, with research1 showing 1 in 10 Aussies (11%) have owned a POÄNG armchair. The sale is available for IKEA Family members (free to join) in-store and online from 12:00am Thursday 29 May to 11:59pm on Monday 2 June. Styles included are the traditional armchair (from $49.50, was $99), low- back version (from $64.50, was $129) and rocking chair (from $74.50, was $149), in a variety of frame and cushion colours.

      • The text you've quoted makes it pretty clear it's 50% off all 3 versions in all frame and cushion colours.

  • +3

Hopefully the footstools get discounted as well!

    • Do you need a pouffe for your POÄNG?

  • +2

these chairs require a bit more effort to stand up from because they are low and they have that angle.

but for $50 I want one of these chairs just to chair in. 😀

I have a short list of things I want, if it comes in handy to add up to $25 off $250 I might consider a trip to ikea.

    thanks OP will consider it.

    • Pretty sure the spend and save deal expires 19 May and this deal starts 29 May so unfortunately you wouldn't be able to combine the two.

      • thanks didn't notice that. already struggling to find $250 worth of stuff so I might give it a miss.

  • Hmm regular or rocking….?

    • +1

      depends. Are you a grandpa?

      • +12

        Ask your grandmother.

    • I had the rocking chair version and recommend it. From memory, the rocking is only a subtle range of movement but it's still better than the standard Poang.

  • +3

are these actually good, or basically trash after 2 years like most of ikea furniture?

    • +2

My previous one lasted 6 years before I moved countries… I had the one with washable cushions (don’t remember the model now)

      • +3

We've had ours for 8 years, and it's still going strong after 2 house moves, one interstate.

        • I've just realised it's not the same model (though I'm pretty sure it's the same name). They changed frame a bit, and definitely changed the cushion: ours is machine-washable.

    • -4

      They're trash. Quite fragile too.

    • +2

the design will probably mean it will wear easy if used roughly.

as you can see the chair frame is a U design, basically every time you sit down (and rock yourself a bit to stand up) it's putting the stress all on that weak U shape frame.

if you are skinny and careful it will probably be fine. if you sit hard and treat it like you expect it to last forever, you might crack something eventually.

    • +6

Family member had some that were 30+ years old which put up with loads of abuse from me when I was a kid and were still basically as good as new. Probably better than new given Ikeas quality nowadays.

      • Yeah my old folks bought some decades ago. I hate them. They’re still standing.

    • +1

I got one of these back in 2013 (albeit with actual leather covered pillows), spent quite a lot of money, I think more than $500 including the matching footrest.

It's worn and a bit squeaky but still perfectly functional. Got a lot of use for at least the first 5-6 years of it's life too.

      • +1

The squeak is a feature, not a defect 😉

    • +2

15 years and still going strong, use it everyday

  • +1

Shame the footstool is $69 =\

    • +5

      Nice.

  • +9

Don't let your 100+kg uncle sit in one of these. Ask me how I know.

    • +5

      How do you know?

    • +2

My uncle is 120kg, tell me so I know when he comes next time

      • Just ask him to sit in it as any normal person. Stand well clear.

  • Which one is better as nursing chair?

    • +3

      I’d assume the rocking one

    • The rocking version doesn't have a great range of motion. You'd likely be better off buying a different chair if you wanted it for breastfeeding.

      • +1

Babies don't want long range of motion; that just makes them dizzy. They want short rhythmic waddling, at pace with their heartbeats. This chair is perfect for that — that's what we bought it for — you just gotta keep pushing at the floor with your feet (which is a tiring, but less than a screaming baby).

    • Lots of people use Poang (either normal or rocking) as breastfeeding chair. But note: I've also read many people saying they are really hard to get up out of, especially for someone post-pregnancy, while holding a baby.

      Would suggest testing for yourself.

  • Is there a matching foot stool? This might be suitable as a gaming lounge chair

    • There is, although I'm not sure if it's being discounted as part of the sale.

    • i bought the stool off marketplace.. its kind of useless tbh coz it doesn't fit under the chair, so it kind of blocks the way if you don't have alot of space and you have to push it away if you need to get up or get back on the chair. And I guess thats why there's heaps of listings of it on mkp

  • Why is this deal getting so many votes? Lol

    • +1

First free C&C deal post from Ikea I guess and 50% off.

    • +4

      1) IKEA
      2) This chair is really comfortable
      3) For $50 it is a steal. You're not getting anything else that looks good and sits comfortably at decent quality for this price.

    • +1

on top of being $50, it's a chair.

do you not know how universal and liked a chair is?? have you never had a long day, and then gotten to a waiting room where there are no chairs, but you find one hidden in the corner?

chairs are my friend, chairs save lives, chairs have died for your country. chairs chair.

  • I read that as PORN Armchair…..mind is in the gutter 🥲

  • +11

you havent worked at a startup until youve had a 1:1 in a poang chair to tell you all the things you're doing wrong

    • too accurate hahaha

  • Nice

  • Is this leather set in the 50% sale?

    https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/poaeng-armchair-and-footstool-b…

Damn less than $300 get you leather chair and footrest.

    • Did you figure out if the leather is also on sale? I'm also interested in the leather one

If you are over 120KG, I wouldn't buy this. My daughter-in-law snapped this in half within 1 day of using it. We had ours for 25 years and so many good memories of my kids playing and swinging in it. My wife casually swinging in it when we were young in the summer breeze. Now my fat arse daughter in law broke it. I told my son to not marry her, damn elephant….never stops eating. We even have a treadmill and an exercise bike and I have never seen her use those.

    • +15

Wow are you sure you want that comment out in the world… there's an unpublish button if you have second thoughts…

anyway, in the safety details on the website:

"…use by persons weighing up to 110 kg"

      • +1

there's an unpublish button if you have second thoughts…

at least it made me laugh reading it.

        basically what I heard was,

        if you are fat..

(as they think of someone) stupid fat b___*

        stupid fat won't stop eating
I hate fat people DO SOME EXERCISE!!

        😂

    • +4

JFC dude. Go chat to your son, a therpaist, or just deal with it, but whinging about his life choices and a member of your family on a deals website on a post about an Ikea chair is weak AF.

  • +1

I weight 115 kilos and we have our chair for 35 years and still my favourite TV chair. Not sure if the new ones are as sturdy but I know Ikea conducts quality tests even if the item they sell is not made in Sweden.

    • They do, and it literally says

"This seating furniture is tested and complies with relevant strength and durability standards. The tests simulate typical usage of the product and are based on use by persons weighing up to 110 kg."

I'd say you are in their safety factor between the real number and what they publish…

  • It's a shame the children's version was not included in the list.

  • My fat ass would BREAK these things lol

    • +1

POÄNG is the noise it would make if i sat my fat arse in it.

  • These chairs are comfy as! Still have it although not used as much any more as we have a recliner now. As its a C shape frame, it creaks and bends when you sit in it but managed to contain my fat ass (100kg) for a good few years. Highly recommend it!

Thinking of matching it with this for a cheap racing setup.
    https://pagnianimports.com.au/products/next-level-racing-ws-…

  • Love these. Super comfy, we have three of them at home.

  • +3

I went to buy one of these the other day at IKEA Rhodes but I can't find the exit. I've been living on swedish meatballs, hot dogs, and fizzy elderflower wine for the past 52hrs. I think someone misplaced the arrows on the floor cos I always end back up at the curtains. Please help me escape.

  • -2

All i see.is $99 where is $50 how to get that.
