      Code is cooked.

      That doesn't work either 😢

      • this made me laugh, good one

  • +1

Centrecom are scammers at this point, said they would charge me $199 at checkout and then when I pay it costs me $282???? Just because a code is exhausted doesn’t mean you can’t not tell a customer and then charge them full. Will be raising this with PayPal and the ACCC

    • +1

That's crap. I'm sure they'd process a cancellation request if asked did to the circumstances.

      • Poor web site design, invalid code should have halted the check out process

      • +2

Yeah I’ve sent them an email now, let’s see how they respond, at least update the price within PayPal if the code doesn’t work.

    • -1

Haha, so quick to go to the ACCC. I'm sure they have 1000 agents waiting for your call.

Codes expire, I knew this would go quickly so I ordered as fast as I could.

Either you didn't enter the code correctly, or it expired while doing checkout. If they billed you full price then you can just request a refund from centrecom before they dispatch, but do it quick, my order already says dispatched.

      • +2

Mate when I click pay with PayPal and it says it’s going to charge me 198 within PayPal as well, I expect it to work and not suddenly charge me $80 more…

        • What do you expect this is CentreCom. From personal experience they will fight you tooth and nail but the day before your court case they will cave. I just don't buy from this company anymore.
Keep us posted because I'd like to see if they have changed.

          • @rifter: Well after calling them 4 times I’ve managed to get a refund from them. They did agree on the third time but I reckon they tried to be sneaky by not confirming it via email until the 4th.

  • Paid $278 a couple of weeks ago, damn!

    • +8

That's only $5.85 per day extra if that makes you feel better.

      • +1

        Nope

  • +2

Damn; that's such a good price! I thought $258 with cashback during Prime was a good deal!

  • Can I plug a USB DAC into this? Audio over HDMI doesn't suit my rig.

    • Can plug it in with an optic cord i'm pretty sure.

      • USB probably works as well – I've got a DAC Magic Plus working on my older model.

      • Pro doesn't have optical out though?

  • +1

    Dame missed it.

    • Same. Was waiting for a sale and I didn't see the notification for this one :(

Not sure what firmware these come with out of the box these days but highly recommend you do some research before letting it automatically upgrade to the latest version. The latest firmware (for me at least) was very problematic and wish I'd never let it upgrade. Its not straightforward but I am glad I have now rolled mine back to an earlier firmware version.

    • I'm on the current firmware and don't have any problems.

      What issues are you having?

    • +1

Not sure what you're talking about specifically when you say problematic? I tend to have major lag and issues with any Bluetooth audio devices I connect to it.

Agree with this, I rolled mine back a couple weeks after letting it upgrade and have blocked future updates with the device and at a network level in case it ever tries to pull that rubbish again. It may depend what you use it for but I had major SMB issues (slow transfers/dropouts) and external drive issues with the update to version 9. They claim to be gradually fixing this with hotfixes but I am more than happy now I've rolled back to 8.2.3 and can still do everything I want with the device. Also took the time to install a custom launcher now that Android TV home screen is full of advertising for TV shows etc. Still a great device but requires some work to get it just right.

      • Exactly. Unit became an absolute pain once it updated to the current Android 11 platform. External storage access became a major problem. I also use mine as an easy way to play retro games with Retroarch and use a 8bitdo Pro 2 controller…. used to work fine on the old firmware but just refused to work with the latest firmware and every time the controller was connected the whole system just became laggy and unusable needing me to pull the plug on the shield to reset.

Kept hoping for fixes to resolve but bit the bullet and downgraded…. best move ever. I love this device again and will NOT be updating anytime soon.

    • When the latest Android 9.0 got rolled out a few months ago, it broke all the local file sharing applications (Plex Server). It got fixed within the first few days. there were perfomance issues as well but subsequent updates have fixed most of that. I'm running without issue now so no issue going to the latest update for new users.

  • My 2017 is shitting the bed lately, incredibly laggy and apps always hang, sometimes even soft resets.

    Sad I missed this one!

    • +1

A comment above suggested opening and cleaning out the dust

    • Latest 9.1 firmware? Got external drives connected and it’s laggy? Or laggy and no external drives?

Known issue if you search Reddit with connected external drives.

My 2017 was laggy even with no external drives connected. Factory reset and 9.1 has been pretty smooth.

      • Latest firmware, no external drives. I am running it as a Plex server but it connects to network storage.

Will have to try a reset next.

    • Probably the joys of Android 11 in the recent firmware upgrades…. I rolled back the firmware per the guide at https://www.droidwin.com/how-to-downgrade-nvidia-shield-tv-t… and it runs beautiful and smooth again. Not re-updating until I know all the bugs have been ironed out.

    • +2

Fan would be spooling all the time as well in standby, 100% agree I had the same issue with crashing too, however opened and cleaned the Dust… Its so much better now. Highly recommend cleaning it.

      • Cool will give that a shot.

  • Dawn missed out

  • Oh man, missed it!

  • I said this on the last shield deal but it's about time Nvidia updated this to 2022 specs.

I hear it's a beast of a device, but they're milking older hardware at this point.

  • What are people doing with these exactly? My Sony X9300E from 2017 is running media streaming apps perfectly fine.

    • -1

I'm sure there's other selling points, but one of the biggest is that it offers up-scaling from 1080p to 4k better than anything else.
Most TV's are 4k now and most content is still 1080p, so getting a Shield makes sense.

    • +1

I got it specifically for its ability to play any media through Plex. It also plays lossless audio TrueHD/DTS:X along with HDR and Dolby Vision.

  • Hi mates,
For the next time, can anybody please suggest why will one need this when one have a 4K smart TV ?
I also have a google TV hooked to the TV but again it is optional to use when I can stream with Apps on the TV
    Thank you.

    • +1

      What type of Smart TV?
People only rave on about these because they're faster than TV's with Android OS and get more software updates. I had one but gave it to the Mrs. Really don't see the need in having more remotes and shit hanging off my TV. If you already have a GTV, not sure why you would want a Shield.

    • +1

something something plex, something something upscaling 4k - no idea, just buy when on special and see

    • +1

I got one for basically one reason - the ability to read ExFat formatted drives, so I can watch files that are over 4GB.

I don't think any TVs let you do you that, and I certainly can't do that with the Chromecast with Google TV even with a hub - most Android TV boxes can only read FAT32 since the Android 9 or 10 update.

I was intrigued by the idea of upscaling, and it looks ok on something like 720p Optus Sports, but it's not something you want to use to upscale dark 1080p content to 4k. I don't think I'd ever use the upscaling if I could help it… I can't wait until Optus streams in 1080p or 4k

    • Also, I am using Google TV to watch IPTV via an app "smart STB" installed on it. However, it looks like the app is resource intensive and it doesn't stream smooth and video hangs quite often. Google TV being 2 GB in RAM and Nvidea being 16 GB, does anybody think buying it to watch IPTV can be a better experience ?

      • +1

The Shield doesn't have 16GB RAM, it's got 3GB of RAM - it's got 16GB of storage, though.

Still 3 is 50% more than 2. It'll definitely perform better, but maybe that better will still be bad.

        • correct, my bad. thanks.

  • Has anyone been able to get Dolby Vision working through Kodi on the shield? I tried a couple of years ago but could only get HDR to work.

For reference I can play Dolby Vision on my Apple TV 4 through Kodi but its a pain as I have to re-sign and re-install Kodi every 7 days for it to work.

  • I'm having a few problems with mine and direct streaming in Kodi - frame tearing, AVR not switching to Dolby Surround, poor colour reproduction, things like that.

It's fast, but my gosh does it have problems at the moment. For comparison, my TVs built in Android TV 9 doesn't have these issues with Kodi at all.

Is it just the new firmware update? I got one from the $278 "deal" earlier this month…

    • I have Kodi on Amazon fire stick works v well or Would use htpc with HDMI 2.1 preferably.

      • I mean, that's my point - why is the Shield, the premier Android TV box have trouble that doesn't seem to effect lesser boxes?

Also, I don't have a HDMI 2.1 TV so it wouldn't change anything

        • +1

          https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brouken.pl…

I use this. Kodi is always slow and buffering. Hold down select button on the settings button for frame rate matching.

          • @askbargain: Kodi has been great for me, no buffering issues like others are experiencing and has always matched framerates without issue.

I'll try the new player though, just in case there is something weird going on with the Shield/Kodi 19.3

            • @Droz: How is it?

              • @askbargain: Didn't like it - wouldn't show my TV shows files properly.

As far as actually playing then, it's fine, but not the greatest.

  • +4

They wouldn't let me get it for this price, cancelled my order. Shit customer support

  • Does Nvidia Shield support usb webcams for WeChat and Google Meet?

  • +8

Anyone doing click and collect , be ready for a Spanish inquisition, I had a go at them as they wanted to take a photo of my licence, didn't let them capture my licence number or date if birth ….they seemed to understand, but we're a bit salty about it …

  • Is this an all time low? (sniff sniff Don't know how I missed this, check OzB almost daily)
