  • It is working now. Just got one

  • Just got mine too.

  • At this price, there must be a new model about to be released?

    • +3

Nice observation. This is still a good deal

    • +5

I think this comment gets posted on every shield tv deal. Will it be accurate this time?

    • Ordinarily that would be the case but I'm not sure there is any new model coming anytime soon, if there is they've been very tight lipped about it.

  • Thanks. Got one to upgrade from my 2017 model which I will sell off. Was waiting for an new updated version which never seen to appear.

  • Why is it this cheap? Are we expecting a newer model?

    • +17

Looks like new model is canceled, since the deal is over.

  • +4

Do I need it? no, but I just bought one anyway. Damn you ozb 🤣

    • +4

I needed a Chromecast (W/remote) to replace an ageing nexus puck.
      Got this instead lol

      • +3

This is so much better, tempted to get a second one at this price. The AI upscaling is a game changer.

        • This will be my second. I'll put this in the bedroom and send the Chromecast to the kids room (the one that actually needed replacing)

        • Is the AI upscaling meaningful for a 1080P TV? or you need 4K to appreciate it?

    • Runs N64 games very well

  • +1

Cheers OP. Pulled the trigger on it to upgrade from the internal apps on my TV.
Finally I can match the refresh rate to the content

  • Wow that's cheap. I was faffing around the other day looking at the latest chinese boxes but I got this instead.

  • +1

Keep thinking of getting Apple TV.
Would this be better? and so on what other uses?

    • +6

      4K upscaling
      Plex server
      Gaming

      • +4

        also Kodi

        • +1

Nice, literally 99% of my use.
Also FTA via Kodi is great

          • +1

@mrjaytee: Didn't know about FTA via Kodi! I'll check it out :)

          • @mrjaytee:

Also FTA via Kodi is great

            Which Add-on is this?

            • +1

@jv: See/google the text in the above comment.

          • @mrjaytee: Use live channels app for streaming FTA. Better user experience than Kodi / AU IPTV

            • @Korban Dallas: Is that the Google app/built in one?
I could never get content to appear in it

              • +1

@mrjaytee: That is the correct native Google app.

You need an add-on tv.irl I think it is.

            • @Korban Dallas: Noob Q. Can this record live FTA programs in HDD just like Fetch?

        • I meant gaming.
          Android gaming
          Emulators

          • -7

@mrjaytee: “Android gaming” ahhh you kids make me laugh.

But yes Emulators are a good use case for the Shield.

Unfortunately Plex server has been broken since the system update a few months ago. If anyone knows how to fix it, I'm all ears.

Kodi is filling the gap in the meantime but it's inferior in most ways.

        • +2

How broken? Mine is still working fine and the system is up to date.

          • @viirgon: Maybe I need another look at it. The player opens but the content is missing. In the settings there is no server, even though it's installed and has all the permissions.

      • worth upgrading 2019 tube to pro? I run plex on pc and only want to switch that over.

        • Running Plex Server on a device (can be on a NAS too if the processor is good enough) vs a PC is to me a much cleaner setup.

          • @viirgon: NAS is old old old ReadyNAS NV2+ running 4x2tb. Should probably look at upgrading at some point but don't know how to utilise it past it being just a large local storage drive that plex/kodi mooch off.

    • apparently its really good for plex server

      • It's fine for a plex server. I used my 2017 as one for years until I needed more storage than the 2 usb ports offered.

        • get something like this

          • @juns: Got one of these instead. put a 3.5" 12tb HDD in it and plugged my existing USB drives. It's better at transcoding anyway.

            • @theguyrules: I was actually eyeing for one of those refurbished SFF, but I am waiting something that can transcode HEVC like intel 8th gen.

Have you measured the power consumption? How much power does that consume?

              • @juns: I haven't no, sorry.
Part of me is tempted to delegate my gaming pc I no longer use (8700k, gtx 1080) to a Plex server but I feel like it would be massive overkill as I don't personally ever transcode.

                • @theguyrules: That would be a massive electricity bill for you too if you want to keep it on 24/7.

I've got a broken screen laptop that my workplace threw out (an i7-6500U). The power adaptor says a max of 65w, but I am yet to measure actual power usage.

For now, that works as an NFS server for Kodi, but I'm hoping to have a server that can do plex transcoding.

                  • @juns: You're not wrong, yeah

                  • +1

@juns: chuck on all the power saving features and you will likely not have to worry about the energy cost.

              • +2

@juns: If this helps at all, I have an Elitedesk SFF 800 (i5-6500/8GB/128SSD/12TB HDD) and my UPS measured the average energy consumption for June 1-30 as 613 Wh / $1 @ 26c kwh

I don't know how accurate it is, but that's what it reports haha

                • +1

@lachhelix: Oh wow, is that 613Wh for a month?

That sounds ridiculously lower than what I'm expecting.

                  • +2

                    @juns: I believe so!!
                    I Pm'd you

update: thanks to @juns - looks like that figure is daily consumption
                    idles at between approx 12W-20W

      • Nah, it's really bad as a plex server. I bought one to try replace my NUC plex server with this but the Plex Server on it just crashes every few minutes. Factory reset and set it all up again 3 separate times, same thing every single time. There's a reason it's the only android plex server.

Maybe it's fine if all your content is on a HDD that's plugged in to the Shield, but it just could not handle my big NAS library.

        • The Plex server on my 2015 version has been solid for years, for media from both SD card and Synology NAS. There are a few occasions when I had to restore connection to the NAS when there is a power outage but otherwise no issue. both Shield and NAS are connected to the ASUS router via ethernet.

          • @viirgon: Interesting. It just could not handle my 40TB Synology NAS, everything over Gigabit ethernet. Plex Server would crash within minutes every time, even when just connecting to the plex site via browser, requiring manual restart.

            • @MrFunSocks: I assume you have tried the latest beta Plex Server app. Clear cache, shutdown and restart.

              • @viirgon: Yep, tried even factory resetting and setting it all up again multiple times.

                • @MrFunSocks: Did you experience the issues before or after the major update in Jan? (https://www.androidcentral.com/nvidia-promises-fixes-broken-…)

Also just to check that under:

Settings, Apps, Special app access, NAS storage access, it's turned on for Plex Media Server.

But it sounds like there is something else going on that's causing the crash.

                  • @viirgon: Before I'd say. I bought one early last year specifically for use as a Plex Server, returned it after a week of trying to get it working. It could access the NAS fine, imported my Movie library, and if I was quick I could start browsing and start watching a movie before it would then crash. It would even crash after a few mins of just going through the settings on the web page.

I bought another one not long ago but just use it for game streaming and plex playback, not as a server.

I have both and ABSOLUTELY HATE the shield. Something goes wrong with it almost every time I try to use it. Won't wake, Plex server gone, attached storage gone, something else. I keep it because the ATV can't passthrough dolby TrueHD. The day it does I swear I'm going to go after the shield with a hammer.

The Shield may be more flexible but it MUCH more finicky to use. The ATV is a million times more polished in terms of user experience.

  • +1

This is much better, the AI upscaling and Android TV ecosystem is better than Apple.

  • goddamit, I just paid $80 more for one these last week. :(

    • If you are paying with Amex, call them for price guarantee refund(or something like that)?

      • +1

Cheers, was visa but there might be some price protection, I'll check it out. :)

  • Would have got this but the cheap Fire TV 4K stick does the job

    • Is the shield 6x better than the fire TV Stick ($35)?

      • Nope

  • +1

Hopefully a new model comes out soon with better bluetooth. This one keeps disconnecting from my headset or causes audio to go out of sync if I walk a short distance away form the tv. Most modern bluetooth chips have no issue remaining connected even several rooms away.
If they do, release a new theres hope they might also fix the autoscaling to be compatible with more apps and resolutions as well, which is currently pretty picky.

  • +1

    Has anyones NVIDIA shield died?
I bought one in 2019 and it is not turning on. (So I can't even do a hard reset)

    • F

    • I've never had one die since 2015. I'm running 3 of them and have 2 more as spares. 2x 2015's and 3x 2017s

I have had to open the case and blow out the dust that collects in the internal vents though. Usually it just starts running like crap, like some chinese tv box, thats when I know its time to blow out the dust.

    • I have 2 x 2015 models still going strong, I was kinda hoping one would die to have a reason to upgrade but it wasn't to be.

Yours could be a mains power problem, unfortunately they're rather expensive to replace the power plugs for these things. I had to do it once after losing one.

    • i had the first version and that died. im thinking it could be power related, not the brick but the circuit board inside the device. iirc they are known to fail.

    • Yes - a few weeks after updating firmware to most recent version. Had to unplug for 10 mins then connect a keyboard and essentially downgrade to android TV 8.2
      3. Working fine ever since.

  • +3

    Discount code is exhausted :(

  • +1

Oh if only I didn't already have a CCWGTV.

    • Same, I'm just going to hold out until the next model of Shield is released.

  • +3

Dam. saying Discount code is exhausted.

  • +1

    Discount code is exhausted

  • Can you plug a usb straight in to watch content like mkv?

    • +1

      Yes you can

  • been using xiaomi mi box for few years, is this one better?

    • +1

      is this one better?

      yes

  • Hmmmm tempting, but do I need one of these if I already use my Xbox Series X plugged in (to a TV with no smart TV functions)

    • +2

      Not really

  • +3

    Code not working anymore?

  • -3

This is a fantastic device, but the price hasn't (significantly) dropped since launch, if you got one on launch in 2015 (or snagged a deal around then) it's a great buy; today not as much. Some good alternatives to check out would be Xiaomi Mi Box, Roku, Amazon Fire, Apple TV, Chromcast (TV). Heck even an old Laptop can be as good or better.

    • +3

Not sure how you'd get a device in 2015 if it launched in 2019.

      • -7

Actually you are wrong. Original shield was 2015.

        • +9

But this isn't the original shield?

    • +1

with all due respect i recommend disregarding this opinion

      • -1

They’re not wrong. It’s largely still the same device it was in 2015. That makes it pretty overpriced.

Unfortunately they can get away with it because it’s the only option for a few use cases and android fanboys continue to hype the shit out of it.

      • If you actually need the power of the Shield then it's the first best (only) option, but all the other options are much better value.

  • (profanity) missed it

  • Is there any reason to upgrade from a 2017 model?

    Does play play Dolby Vision?

    • Yes it plays DV

  • +2

As per above "Discount code is exhausted". Marking as expired.

  • Just missed it, 10 minutes. I needed one too. My raspberry pi died last week and thought it was a good time to upgrade.

  • +1

    Code is cooked.
