Lots of whales around wet and wild too.

  • I am an average swimmer. Not sure I am confident of swimming in the ocean. Would anyone who has tried this confirm you need to be able to confidently swim in the ocean to do this or do they provide enough safety gear to not have to worry?

    • Almost certain they would provide / insist upon a life jacket.

Not the same tour but I've swam with the whale sharks in WA. My tour did provide safety gear but best to give them a call.

Note that you'll need to be decently confident in water as the tour guide will have to take care of multiple people. Get a set of snorkels and flippers and practice in a swimming pool, practice diving and emptying out the snorkel upon resurfacing. You'll get much more enjoyment out of it.

      Good luck

      • I have been up to the great barrier Reef and snorkeled there with the gear. With a lifejacket on, I felt very safe and knew how to with the snorkel gear, no issues

No, you're either promoting an illegal activity or you're lying.

    Other no approach zones
Other specific no approach zones exist for the following:
    • prohibited vessels (e.g. jet skis and hovercraft): not
within 300 metres of a whale or a dolphin
    • aircraft: not within 300 metres of a whale or dolphin
    • a person in or entering the water: not within 100 metres
of a whale or 50 metres of a dolphin

    The the reason for this

    Something to think about…
A fully loaded semi-trailer weighs 36 tonnes. A fully-grown humpback whale weighs up to 45 tonnes. You wouldn’t stand in front of a moving semi-trailer, so why would you put your boat in the way of a whale?

    • It's not an illegal activity when done as per regulation. My understanding is that you're not allowed to approach the whale but the whale is allowed to approach you. It's fairly new to Australia and has only been offered in QLD for around 6-7 years. It's advertised on the QLD Government tourism website. It's no different than how you're not allowed to bring some boats close to whales but those whales are allowed to get close to the boats.

Yep but you're not swimming with the whales anymore then when I'm down at d'bah and they cruise by.

Swimming with is misleading/lying if you're over 100m away.

What harrylives says below is what they do. They put you in its path get you out and then you are afloat in the water as the whale comes towards you. No one should expect that you're literally swimming adjacent a whale like in Aquaman or something. The emphasis should be on "SWIM with the whales" and not
          "SWIM WITH the whales."

I get your point and don't disagree with you but realistically for $150 for a person there's worse and more expensive ways you can waste or enjoy your money. If it was $150 for two I think it would be more reasonable. I personally don't think $150 per person is worth it but people might think it's worth it. Hopefully they set expectations realistic for the people who choose to go. I feel like they do that decently in the Whale Watching industry from the boats I've been on. Hopefully that's the same here.

    • what they do is try drop you off in the whales path 150m+ ahead, then it may become a happy coincidence a 45 tonne mammal is coming your way. you're not supposed to move once you're in that protected zone, same for the boat if it happens to occur

Should be "hope the whales swim near enough for you to have any meaningful encounter". Otherwise, anyone swimming the ocean is technically "swimming with whales".

    • +3

      "Swimming with Whales"*

      Conditions:
      * Whales not included.

  • This is false advertising, plain and simple….welcome to the Gold Coast.

This is a super unethical activity

    • How?
