Have Applied for 300 Jobs in 3 Months. Still Unemployed

I’ve been with a few recruiting agencies. They mostly put forward my resume to bolster numbers and I now I don’t trust them nor will work with them anymore after being burned by them.

Everything from corporate, retail, hospitality. They go on about a worker shortage but it’s lies. They just don’t want to hire people - particularly the unvaccinated.

I work at Hungry Jack's, and we're constantly looking for new workers, as other workers aren't sticking around, or they are just lazy careless workers, don't show up, or call in sick weekly. All you have to do is be keen and a decent worker, and bam, you will have a job easily. We've been looking for another reliable night shift worker for years now. Due to short staffing, it's very hard for me to get time off. If I do, then they have to get day managers to cover me. On many days, there aren't enough workers to keep up, because half of them keep calling in sick or randomly not showing up. Just walk into a fast food shop with a resume, be flexible with your hours, and it will be easy.

    • Are the ones sick unvaxxed?

      • idk, I don't know most of the workers, as I do night shifts. I'm sure plenty are calling in sick without actually being properly sick. probably hangovers too. But considering almost all Australians get tetanus, hepatitus, polio, influenza, meningococcal, and other vaccines as toddlers, I would assume yes, they have had vaccinations.

        • +2

I meant in regards to cv19?

I think like you said Young people party, but they also play games online, which distracts them completely. I worked with a guy and when a new dc,marvel, scifi film came out, he had the day off work.

  • OP , you should post a redacted version of your cover letter and CV for everyone to critique.

Redact all of your personal information , companies etc , dates etc. just leave skills and stuff like that.

  • +2

lol @ op applying for jobs that require a vaccine and then complains about not being vaccinated
    not sure if srs

  • +5

You're free and welcome to avoid getting vaccinated. You just have to avoid society so that your selfishness doesn't affect others. And that means not being in a workplace filled with society.

    • +2

Can we stop calling people selfish for not getting vaccinated? It's just stupid and shows you've been brainwashed by the gov marketing pushed at us during the vacine rollout. They increase their own risk and I'm not seeing any studies that show that an unvaccinated person increases risk of transmission to others. And also wtf can't someone be selfish when deciding what they want to do with their oen body?

      • +1

How do you think we eradicated polio? By vaccinating everyone. And it's not just affecting your body, when you are putting yourself near other people. You're quite welcome to avoid it if you become a hermit. So going around spreading diseases isn't selfish, even if it's avoidable? It's the main reason people shouldn't go to work with a cold - it puts others at risk of getting it too, which is selfish.

  • in all seriousness, if it is not a troll post, just don't mention your status and don't even start sharing your views about this covid saga. Also, not that I encourage you to lie but even if you are asked about your status, respond promptly "of course" instead of "not your business", so there is a big chance that they will never ask about it again if they hire you.

  • +3

I agree OP, I've been unemployed since march. Same story applied for 100+ jobs. Had half a dozen responses. I'm middle aged. Experienced in many industries. This jobs 'boom' the gov keeps on talking about feels like a bad joke.

    • -5

The idea that the country is crying out for workers, is nonsense. It’s a scam designed to allow them to increase migration again.

      • +8

Meanwhile I’ve never been unemployed in the 25 years I’ve been working. I change employment every couple of years chasing more money and I like change.
Apparently I present well in interviews and I can hold a decent conversation.
If you’re one of the 4% unemployed, take a good look at yourself and see how you can improve.

        • +1

          Ie novavax would help.

        • +2

Same boat, never had an issue finding a job, change every few years chasing money in totally different industries with zero experience.
I can walk down my Main Street and know there are at least 5 places looking to hire, the shortage is there.

  • +2

You don't even need to be vaxed to enter Australia anymore. Why are employers asking for it ? Pretty pointless really when 90% + are vaxxed anyway and you would be considered vaxed even if more than a year ago. Not to mention having covid at some point would give you as good or better protection anyway. I know I'm being somewhat incoherent but right now making that a requirement makes little sense.

    • It would create unnerve in the other employees.

The employee themselves can put themselves at legal risk of said employee infected a customer or another employee.

No one cares if you're unvaxxed, but people care about getting sued.

      • +3

But millions of vaxxed are spreading omicron anyway. It would have made perfect sense may be 8mths ago but just a bs arbitrary unfounded reqmt now imo. Similar to tickbox compliance nonsense

        • Tell that to legal. You don't need to be right to win a law suit, you just need to be annoying enough for them to settle to make you go away.

    • +1

      It's an ohs issue.

      • I hate that line when said without substance or explanation. Same with 'its a duty of care thing'. Just an excuse to shut it down and stop any further analysis or discussion. If it's such a ohs thing then how come nobody is referring to it that way? Ie WorkSafe etc. And what makes an unvaccinated person a walking ohs issue in the workplace? Is an obese person with more health issues an ohs issue for employment and shouldn't be in the workplace? Or a smoker?

    • They ask for it because they can, same thing with 'X years experience' for entry level jobs.

  • +1

If OP is right, all us responsible people will develop complications and die which will mean he may get a job soon as a …
    Nurse?
    Grave digger?
    Farmer?
    Fisherman?
    Zombie killer?

All cause mortality is at all time highs in many highly vaccinated populations even when accounting for all covid cases.

      • +1

Most deceased had underlying health conditions. One told me 50-60% had a history of smoking. They don't make that detail known.

    • +1

Not getting the covid vacine, doesn't make someone irresponsible.

  • Here's work that maybe suitable and may not b require vaxed employees.

  • I don't have any evidence although I do work but based on my experience I also always felt like the workers shortage was a bit of a lie. Kinda like the unemployment number.

  • I hear NASA looks for a CEO

    • elon musk is looking for a son, his current one wants to get a sex change, god that would be an awesome job to be his son

  • +14

    I shouldn't, but I can't resist.

I don't even think it's about the public health concern any more, I think it's basically a free, socially acceptable IQ test, if you're unvaccinated, why would anyone want to work with you? What else will you not be able to figure out?

    • +3

      I second this.

The fact that OP is not vaxed tells me they are a person that does not have good judgment. So I would not hire them nor even care to meet with them. He should be glad that humans gave up on natural selection.

      • -2

That us a disgusting thing to say and completely over the top. Just a scum useless comment to bag someone. I wouldn't trust your judgement on natural selection.

        • +1

And that ok. That’s your right. But a company has a right to choose based on its standards, so long as its within the law. Can’t force your view of the world onto other people. Don’t like it? Well campaign to change the government and change the laws.

  • +6

Didn’t you say you might be homeless a couple months ago? If I were in your situation I’d be taking any job as is, most hospitality don’t discriminate due to the labour shortage, I’m tipping it’s your work ethic and ego that is effecting your job situation. A job is income regardless at the end of the day.

  • +1

    r/unexpected

  • +13

I think the unvaccinated (without a medical reason) are freeloaders. I have no time for them, and I guess a lot of employers see it that way as well. If the majority of us had decided not to get vaccinated where we would be now? Still in lock-down? If you want a job, you know what to do. Even then, late vaccination dates will be a red flag to a lot of people. I wouldn't want to work with somebody who didn't accept the evidence; as a harbinger it's not a good look.

    • +1

      Agreed.

    • +7

I think this is the reality that a lot of people forget - without high vaccination rates plenty of businesses would have been stuck dealing with the operating challenges of lockdowns for a lot longer. Getting vaccinated says a lot about a person's team first mentality, not to mention that it's a relatively straightforward baseline test to establish that they can follow simple instructions and are of a rational and logical mindset.

That being said, there's still definitely jobs out there.

  • Maybe Op, can go pick some lettuce ;)

  • +1

Good luck my dude. Your hard work will pay off eventually.

    • lol

      • Well it has more chance of paying off than giving up. If J K Rowling gave up after three months she'd probably be bagging groceries at Tesco right now.

        • +1

The self cheer squad is good however your head space is congested with the past & preventing you from moving forward free of baggage.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah he probably should find a new agency to help him out, if the one he's working with right now isn't finding him work or helping him stay in a good headspace.

  • +3

    Try harder, and get vaccinated.
I don't think you mind being on Centrelink one bit!

      • +3

        Get used to unemployment mate.

  • I found it really really hard finding a job while unemployed. Applied for all sorts of crap.

Finally landed a crap job, and have since moved companies 3 times in 2 years and have almost doubled my salary (albeit from minimum wage).

    • -1

What job got you out of the Rot?

      • Call centre

        • -1

          Calcutta?

          • +1

@BewareOfThe Dog: Nah there are plenty here that run their own call centres, NAB has one and they pay well

  • You must have a reason besides not being vaxxed to be unemployable in the current climte. Its impossible to not be able to even get a crappy job right now. Try to reflect on yourself instead of playing the victim.

    • -7

The whole “worker shortage” is a myth. Never has been.

      • +1

        Baloney
I guarantee if you put up an ad on FB MP or Gumtree "Labourer looking for work" right now, you'll be on a job site tomorrow getting paid $30 per hour.

You're a self proclaimed qanon conspiracy theorist and proudboy.

You can blame immigrants, your grandma, the ALP, Paul J Keating or whoever else you want but the problem is YOU.

      • +4

"Competent worker shortage". I fixed it for you.

      • +1

Sure buddy. You really need to reevaluate your life if you choose to think this way. The amount of idiots that I've seen who shouldn't have jobs DO have jobs. So you not having one says alot, oh and these people are unvaxxed too. Stop playing the victim and maybe you'll get a job.

  • What’s more important to you now? A job (any job) or a job you want (corporate). F it’s corporate then just get vaccinated. After you’ve done that and you still can’t get a corporate job you will know for sure it’s not entirely because of your vaccination status and you can entertain advice others have given on here. Redo your CV so it’s targeted to the role. Add a cover letter. When you’re getting interviews but not getting offers, change your approach. Maybe work with a life coach. They’ll help you overcome nerves or get you to focus more on what you need to do to get to where you want to go.

In my experience a person already working is more attractive than someone who has been unemployed for a length of time. During the time between work, see if you can upskill yourself. It’ll also help explain why you haven’t been working too.

Good luck, hope you find something soon because I know it can be stressful looking and not getting the outcome you want quickly.

    • -5

Any job. I’m getting out of Oz in 12-18 months.

      • +2

        Can't you bring that forward?

  • Try being a contractor laying flooring. They are having trouble getting people to do small and medium sized laying jobs (the existing contractors now will only do large jobs, an entire hosue at once).

    • they make big bucks too, but its hard labour

  • +1

Hate to say this, but upskilling or changing careers might be on the cards - it’s just so hard to ride one line of work to your retirement.

Don’t rely on the HR inbred mongrels to help you, perhaps some research into other viable means of employment?

No point wasting life failing continuously.

    • -1

      Thanks. Appreciate the response.

    Hahahahahahahahahahaha

  • +2

Get a hose and a ladder.
Walk up to any house, tell them you'll clean their gutters for $150, usually $350. Will take you less than an hour.
Do 10 a day and make $1.5k cash in hand a day - that's 10k a week. Raise your prises to the "normal" $300+ per job and you're making $20k/week or over $80k/mo.
Stop applying for (mod: removed inappropriate term) desk jobs and do something that people actually want - you don't even need to get vaxxed.

  • +1

    Problem solved OP, 👏Just👏Get👏Vaccinated👏

    • +1

his heart beat is normal now why would he get waxxed? Australia with the highest wax rate in the world and in highest infection rate per capita and just broke record for deaths….great argument

      • +1

I’m not sure his lack of manscaping is the cause of his lack of employment.

A quick fix if it is the cause would be to stop putting photos of his junk on his resume.

  • +2

    Is this slavoz's secondary account?

Sadly there are many people who have a similar mindset; they read a few comments on Facebook, search for options that support their bias and then claim they know the “truth”.

Last year, Pfizer CEO claimed his shot is 100% effective. 100%.

Many Australians took risk of injecting novel tech w/ no long term data & got shot, based on his word.

Bourla just went on CNBC & said a "big wave" is coming, & it's time for Pfizer shot 5.

  • Are you able 50 years or migrated from overseas. The hiring decision makers have a serious problem with ageism or non-local experience. Atleast that's my experience.

This thread is an example why the unemployment rate will never hit zero.

Oh wait, yes - there's a shit ton of reports on long Covid. If Covid-19 was like human papillomavirus, where it dramatically increases your chance of cancer, you would be truly (profanity).

There are a few anti mask, anti vax recruiters and business owners floating on linkedin. Perhaps try those? What's your position on 5G?

    • -2

      No opinion on it.

  • OP's profile picture adds a bit of fuel to the bin fire!

    • Just ignore them. They are not worthy of a response anymore

Totally consistent with his other opinions.

If you're willing to move outside a big city. Or to a mining town, every second business is looking for someone. Particularly, the mines, 6 figure pay as a receptionist does sound like a good gig.

Edit: just realised your unvaccinated, good luck. Your status means you lock yourself out of more than 75% of industries. Maybe try be a fruit picker ?

  • +3

Hmm, OP might be a potential troll.

I was working in retail 5 years, did a couple IT courses, and was applying for entry level IT jobs for nearly two years and went through so many interviews before I got one at APS4 level, couple years later went up to APS6. So all I'm saying is, sometimes it can take a while, particularly if your not outgoing or good at bullshitting. Also I work at a university and no vax is required.

    • -1

Thanks. Glad you hear your persistence paid off.

    • Which IT courses did you take?

      • Cert III then IV in IT and Networking.

  • I work in construction, and although sounds like a big industry, everyone know someone in another company to call about you.

    John worked at A B C
If have a mate at A and B and C, and can always enquire about John.

So it may not need to be about your cv, but about you.
