How does web hosting work? With above specs could you host your own website at home?
I do remember reading somewhere that you need a static IP connection from your Provider though.
    • How does web hosting work?

A bit technical to get into here but short story, it's just another computer with specific hardware referred to as a server. It has software for serving content (web pages, media, etc). There is also network software and hardware between the server and you. A lot of the stuff today is virtualized but still remains the same as the basic phyiscal concept.

Doing it yourself your internet connection would be the bottle neck. Everything else is an after thought

    • +1

Theoretically you could, but there would be certain risks that you would take, like potential for losing your internet if some script kiddie decides to start a DoS, and when you start getting large amounts of traffic your router may not be powerful enough to route them all, thus causing you to lose your internet access.

  • Looks good for the first year. After that I'd probably migrate. Only paying 10$, $20 or $30 for the first year on starter, freedom, premier respectively if you count the woolies gift card.

The word press offer probably good for some blog or small business shop site.

    • Yep. Ventra have not been looking after their current customer base for a while. Much better deals out there.

      • +1

Can you share sample of much better out deals? Or at least a good reliable service provider? I am in need of web hosting, thanks and appreciate your sharing

  • Do you know if I can use this to top my my existing VentraIP account (which was ported over from Zuver a while back, and paid up till next year)?
