SAVFAV20

Just spotted the MS Surface Duo 2 on eBay at what looks like a very good price for the 256GB model, given the 128GB was well received for a similar price recently.

Hopefully they'll get Windows officially on to the 3rd Gen.

  • Buy a OG surface duo for about $550 from ebay instead.

Yeah I'm not in the market for a phone over $800. Not worth it for the replacement cycle.

Could get it from Amazon US from around the same price new and unlocked https://www.amazon.com/NEW-Microsoft-Surface-128GB-Unlocked/dp/B08JTDPRM1/?encoding=UTF8&pf_rd_p=a4a38f99-11fa-4593-a47c-9ca7a752d05d&pd_rd_wg=aOvRh&pf_rd_r=E268REBKGVAVM74DW7D0&content-id=amzn1.sym.a4a38f99-11fa-4593-a47c-9ca7a752d05d&pd_rd_w=yAmAA&pd_rd_r=61d631d7-a03d-458b-a997-af4266a14b22&ref=cr_cartx

  • As opposed to say a z fold, wouldn’t the idea of two screens separated as opposed to a single folding screen be not as immersive?

    • +6

this would be more focused on productivity, in the same way you would use two desktop monitors

    • +3

Well having 2 separate screen makes this more durable than the fold. Just saying.

Rip off. Microsoft is terrible with software updates. Only worth buying for your smartphones history museum.

    • +4

Actually I've read they have performed a lot of updates recently where it is no longer riddled with so many bugs. It may have been the case at the start but not anymore.

      • Perception has been set of the early adopter tax being quite steep.

    • +1

The software updates for this have been very good actually, probably best to do a bit of reading

You can do this with 2 telco branded prepay phones and a roll of gaffer tape for under 150 bucks.

    • +1

How? All you'd have is 2 screens showing the same or different stuff that are stuck together. No extended screen capability at all.

  • what is this good for?
Is this a bit silly to say that this could replace a laptop for uni?

    • +2

It's not a laptop replacement. Just for people who constantly run 2 apps at the same time

  • +1

So I can watch attack on titan on one screen and watch hentai on the other screen?

    • your phone background can be tifa on one screen and aerith on another ;]

Every time there is a SD post there seems to be the same questions or comments, here are some facts based on myself using a SD1:

Q: Why would I want 2 separate screens as opposed to having a single screen foldable like a Samsung Galaxy Fold? I can watch videos without the gap?
A: This is like having 2 monitors at work. It is not built for media consumption. You can view 2 apps at once to multi-task or span an app across 2 screens intentionally. E.g. Outlook inbox on one screen, email preview on the second screen; call an insurer on one screen and have your policy PDF on the other. View an email on one screen and click on a link to open it on a browser in the other screen to view the webpage.

Q: I can have 2 apps open on the Galaxy Fold too?
A: Yes, but you have to press a button and resize your windows. On SD, it is automatic. It will open new web pages or links on your other unused screen. You can create 'app groups' to open 2 app combinations from your home screen icon e.g. shopping list on To Do app and a supermarket catalogue on the other. You can also use it in compose mode to place it down like a laptop, type on the onscreen keyboard whilst video calling or play games like a DS with Xbox game pass etc. But I would not use it as a laptop replacement due to its small size, only for on the go emails or texts. The screen ratio is wider and shorter than the Fold for more screen estate for emails.

Q: I heard there are bugs and no updates, how can I trust MS will deliver?
A: Whilst at launch there were a litany of bugs, updates have come through monthly in form of security patches, bug fixes and new features such as glance screen supporting third party chat apps and keyboard touch reponse have improved. Android 12L has been reported to be arriving end of the year.

Overall, this is a niche device for particular 'power users'. If you don't have a need for multi tasking and all you do is do the socials and call/text, this isn't for you. For myself, I don't want to go back to single screen phones given the improved productivity. If I want to hold it in one hand, I can fold back into single screen mode.

I remember playing with the fold 3 and it can do dex natively, honestly the best way to use the big square screen.

  • Perfect timing, I was super unhappy with the newly revealed galaxy z fold 4, and was thinking about grabbing one of these instead (yes I know it isn't a foldable). Thanks OP!
