Best GFX Card for < $1000

Hi All,

I think I have pretty decent PC setup with:

My system:

Intel Core i9-10850K

Gigabyte z490 Gaming X Motherboard

128GB RAM G.Skill Ripjaw DDR4-3600

BUT my graphics card is quite old - NVidia Geforce GTX 980 4GB Video Card.

I use my PC for adobe creative suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) and want to upgrade my card for the latest games. What is your recommendations for under $1000 budget.

So far I have found the following on sale:

Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming OC 8GB R2.0 LHR Graphics Card - $849 @ Scorptec
Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3070 GAMING OC 8G V2, 8GB - $869, from $999, @ Scorptec
Gigiabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 3060 Elite 12GB R2.0 LHR - $699 @ Centre Com
MSI GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Ventus 2X 8G - $769 at Centre Com

Any other cards that should be considered/recommeneded? Just because I have $1000 budget doesn't mean I just want to spend all of it, hence why so far the $699 one from Centre Com Looks appealing.

Well, if you really want a 3060, this deal would be much cheaper.

Also look into some of the AMD graphics cards, 6600xts are around $350-400

Alternatively, if you can wait a bit, the next gen is coming soon, around mid October to November.

    • Hi,

Thanks for the reply, is there much difference with the many brands? i.e. Asus vs Gigabyte vs EVA vs MSI

      • Well… The were issues when they first launched these cards relating to the quality of capacitors and other board components. The two I linked above were the better performers in that respect.
There's lots of info on it on YouTube.

  • There's even 3060s going for $500 so you can save more than $699 on that front, but I'd say it depends on your resolution and gaming needs also. 3080s are also reaching the sub-$1000 mark, but yeah you did mention you didn't want to spend all of your budget so that can be overkill.

    • I don't really have high resolution requirements but I want to be able to play the latest graphic intensive games at max settings without worrying about it freezing.

3080s for sub-$1000? I would spend all the $1000 for the right deal, can you share the link for the 3080s?

      • I could have sworn there was a current deal for $999, but I only found this Galax for $1179: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/708746

Maybe the $999 one is the listing that got taken down for sockpuppeting or something.

If I had a $1000 budget for a new GPU I'd probably wait and get a 3080 for just under that. A 3070 could do it though. Depending on your needs/futureproofing.

that seems like a pretty solid deal considering it's the highest tier AMD card.
i bought my reference 6800xt card for $1069 at launch so a tier up for less is pretty good.

The best for under $1000 is actually: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/717818

But if you want to burn your $$ on Nvidia at the moment for far less value, it's a different story :P

Also pointless if your screen is only 1080p ;)

AMD cards are currently much better value, though some programs play nicer with nvidia cards (e.g. machine learning stuff is pretty dependent on nvidia cards). It's best to check against the software you use, e.g. AMD cards are alternatively much better for linux.

    Here you go a 3080 under 1k

At this stage I would be looking for a 3070 at around $750, or 3060 ti < $700. Regular 3060 <$500 if that's enough performance for you.

3070 ti is terrible value, not much faster than a 3070 but always much more expensive. Might as well go for the cheapest 3080

As others have said it depends what you need it for. For gaming only AMD cards are much better value at the moment. If you use NVENC encoding or GPU computing applications, Nvidia will be better supported
