Coles Muesli 750g Toasted Original / Toasted Nutty / Apricot Date & Almond / Summer Fruits $3.10 Each @ Coles

90

It's rarely seen Coles cuts the price on their home brand muesli, maybe we are inching closer to RBA rate cut.
The Coles home brand muesli taste better than some major brand muesli, particularly the toasted varients, IMO.

I buy and eat this stuff by the truckload. I love the toasted nutty version. All varieties are better than the Woolworths equivalents. Even Coles' lowest-price plain muesli is/was good (less sugar) at about $2.10 but sadly it seems to have been discontinued.

    • OMG me too. I exclusively shop at Aldi, but some weeks I just go to Coles to stock these up.

      Love the summer fruits one.

Agree with you on all you said. I buy these too and create a mix of them (mix 4 different variety bags in a big container and have a few spoonfuls for breakfast mixed with yoghurt and fruit).

Are you sure their $2.10 one has been discounted? I bought 2 bags about 3 or so weeks ago of this one - https://shop.coles.com.au/a/top-ryde/product/coles-entry-mue…

      • Thanks mate, maybe just out-of-stock in my part of the world, but I have checked about five or six different Coles in the past fortnight!

I also create "blends", using some of the $2.10 version to reduce the sugar %

        • Yes the mixed / blends are the way to go and the $2.10 one forms part of mine too. I also throw a bag of rolled oats in my mixes too just to reduce my sugar intake.

      • Are you sure their $2.10 one has been discounted?

I can confirm that the $2.10 one has been discontinued. I took the empty bag down to my local Coles, they looked it up on their portable scanners, and it said "obsolete". The same scanner said there was still some in stock at a nearby Coles, which I visited and bought all stock. Try asking your local Coles for the same info.

        • Distressing news.

@Charlie Dont Surf: When my current stocks run out in a few months, I'm going to try making my own from the basics: rolled oats from Coles, wheat bran from Woolies, and a few other items. Looks like it will work out even cheaper than the $2.10 Coles was charging! But I'll have to experiment a bit to work out the quantities.

            • +1

@Russ: I might try that myself. Wil need to get the ratios correct. Love an extra sultana or three.

              • +2

@Charlie Dont Surf: I measured out 100g of the Coles $2.10 muesli, separated it into its ingredients, and weighed them (on my scale with 1g resolution).

                I measured:

                • 83g of rolled oats
                • 7g of sultanas
                • 6g of wheat bran sticks
                • 3g of dried pineapple
                • 1g of banana chips

I looked at where the ingredients were available. Neither Coles nor Woolies claim to have dried pineapple available, so I had to source that elsewhere. Only Woolies have wheat bran sticks, unless you count Kellogs Original All Bran, which would blow the budget (and have more sugar and sodium).

Using ingredients sold at Woolies, plus pineapple from Nuts About Life (price including shipping), it does work out a little cheaper to make your own than the price Coles were charging. You'll have to buy about a year's worth of pineapple and banana though, assuming you go through a 750g packet of muesli every ~8 days, like I do.

Spreadsheet of nutrition (in PDF format) here, results are pretty close to the Coles nutrition panel: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/58622/97667/coles_mues…

The spreadsheet lists which Woolies products I used. I copied their nutrition values from the Woolies nutrition panels, but some I had to search for online, and most of the potassium values I had to work out from equivalent products as the potassium values weren't listed at Woolies.

OzBargain won't let me upload the XLS file, nor a zipped file.

                • @Russ: Massive effort Russ, I appreciate it, that will make my own research easier. I feel like there's some ingredients I could substitute - pineapple and banana chips - maybe for dried apricot pieces and nuts respectively.

                  • @Charlie Dont Surf: I agree, I personally prefer dried pawpaw in mine. Hard to buy though.

I'll have to buy a scale with higher resolution too!

                    • @Russ: Have you persisted with this project? I've just returned from a stint overseas, and saw that Woolies still has its "Traditional Museli" on the shelves, albeit at $2.50.now.

I never thought the Woolies version was as nice as Coles, but I'll probably be buying this out of convenience. But I am tempted to build my own, as per above.

                      • @Charlie Dont Surf: I did, I made a batch and ate it.

The only change I made was to buy the dried pineapple from a local supplier, so it was a little cheaper.

The muesli seemed identical to Coles muesli, with two small differences:

                        • The sultanas were plump and juicy instead of shriveled and dry, so perhaps I should use a little more to get the same sugar and fiber as the Coles muesli.
                        • When I finish a container of Coles muesli, there is usually quite a bit of white flakes left behind, which I assume is oats or bran. With my mix, there was less, about half as much.

Since I finished that batch, I have been chewing my way through the nine packets of Coles muesli that I bought when I found it has been discontinued. I have about 50 days of Coles muesli left, and then I'll be making my own again.

I never thought the Woolies version was as nice as Coles

I agree, I found the Woolies version had quite a few seeds still in their husks, unchewable.

If you are going to make your own, make sure you have a couple of 2l or 3l storage boxes that are ant resistant, to store the left-over ingredients. And another one to store your batch of muesli.

                        • @Russ: Thanks, tempted to give it a go. I see that Coles is advertising Dried Pineapple now, although I could probably skip it altogether as I find it a little too sweet. I'll store all the packs into the fridge.

                          • @Charlie Dont Surf:

I find it a little too sweet.

Try diced dried pawpaw, it tastes less sweet to me. Doesn't seem to be sold in Coles or Woolies though, it may be difficult to find a supplier. I can see it listed at "The People's Market Perth".

                            • @Russ: I saw Banana Chips at Aldi tonight, brand name is Sweet Vine. $2.89 for a 300g bag. Getting tempted to MYO muesli sometime soon.

                              • @Charlie Dont Surf: If you know how to quickly break the banana chips into small chunks, please share.

I was tempted to put them in the blender, but then I'd end up with powder.

Next time I make my own muesli, I may leave the banana chips out. I can't say I notice them when I'm eating the muesli, and it's easier to make without them.

@Russ: Imagine my surprise today when I went to a Coles store - which I don't often visit - to pick up a couple packs of Coles Toasted Nutty Meusli (now $3.50 by the way) and lo and behold, the good ol' low-sugar plain-label $2.10 muesli was on the shelf!! Surely not still there from a year ago? Is it back? Seen elsewhere? I bought two packs but wondering if I should have cleaned them out. I await further correspondence and will undertake due diligence on the matter.

                                  • @Charlie Dont Surf: That is surprising. I've just looked online and it isn't showing up, I'll check in-store when I'm next at the shops. Thanks!

Maybe your local Coles were cleaning up their storeroom, and found the muesli in a wrongly-labeled crate?

                                    • @Russ: It was well away from my local area, but I'm thinking that I should make a trip back and empty their shelf! How is your homemade muesli project going?>

                                      • @Charlie Dont Surf: I'm still making it, I make a new batch (with 1.5kg of oats) about every three weeks. Breaking up the banana chips takes too long, so once they run out, I won't buy any more.

For the sultana quantity, I've settled on 200g of sultanas per 1.5kg of oats. It seems about right, neither too much nor too little.

If you're having your muesli with milk, I recommend you try it with plain yoghurt instead. Quite a different experience!

                                        • @Russ: I've cleared the shelves Russ. https://imgur.com/a/uiDwqvT

                                          • @Charlie Dont Surf: Well done! Are they still before their "best before" date? That should give some indication whether they are new stock, or old stock that was recently uncovered.

I checked my local Coles a week ago, none there. Not that I would have bought any, I'm now happy making my own.

  • Imagine my disappointment tonight when I stopped into my local Coles and the muesli was still $3.50 a pack, and the $2.10 variety still nowhere to be seen.

    • Went to my local Coles today. The $2.10 one is now gone, and the Coles Muesli have a price drop $3.10 ticket on the shelf.
