Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 13.5”, Ryzen 5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Platinum $1078 | 16GB RAM $1318 + Delivery @ Harvey Norman

660

Cheapest price for a Surface Laptop 4 laptop atm, guess HN makes a mistake with pricing (further 10% on top of already discounted price of 1300ish). Anyway, enjoy :)

16GB RAM version is not bad too at $1,318

$1097 at OW but if you can get them to price beat for an additional 5% off to not give HN your sales

    • tried that with Jb and they refused with “clearance” reason

      • +1

Get JB to price match OW and pay with discounted gift cards from ShopBack and it’ll still be cheaper than what HN is offering

        • +11

And you don't give that grub Gerry any money.

    • +2

Shame officeworks dont stock the 16GB variant

  • +9

These always get a plus from me for this very reason….

    Screen Aspect Ratio 3:2

    • +1

I choose Surface because of that too lol, also the keyboard - best of the best

      • +1

        Except for thinkpad kb

    • +1

Same here, love 3:2 for productivity

Would this be suitable for a year 1 student? Have to get one for my kid next year, but concerned about weight, how much it can withstand the occasional drops, bumps, etc, and overall value for money for the use

    • +2

As in a 6 year old?

      • +11

Call child services. Decloanh should get the kid the top spec m2 macbook pro.

      • -1

Yeah. For some reason the school thinks they should start bringing laptop from as early as year 1. And it must be a windows laptop.
I was hoping this would be rugged and we'll specced enough to last until year 6 😅

        • +4

This is not a rugged design. Quite the contrary actually.

        • +1

I was hoping this would be rugged and we'll specced enough to last until year 6

Good luck with that. Be lucky to last a week or two without it being damaged.

        • +4

Yeah good luck, kid that little is going to destroy anything.

Maybe a surface go in a rugged case?

Upon his insistence to move on from a cheapish HP chromebook, I bought my son in year 6 an Asus Vivobook Flip 14, for around $1400. Lasted a few days before dents started to show up on the corners of the "metal" casing, the screen developed cracks due to the bends, and the keyboard lost a couple of keys, for which I had to replace the whole keyboard (not easy as you have to undo the whole laptop to reach to it). My son grew tired of it in a few months due to weak battery and the added pressure from my side to handle it gently at school.
His old chromebook was handed over to his younger sister, he got a new chromebook from the school this year and the Asus laptop is now being used by me for occasional use (hate its dim screen and weak battery). All of us are happy.
Morale of the story: Chromebooks are semi-ruggerized, rubberized laptops with two day batteries, charged through USB C and best suited for kids's backpacks :)

          • @Sfh1975: You can get better Zenbooks for that price.

            • @Techie4066: I know. But it was last year from a brick and mortar store, with my son refusing to wait while I did someone research 😕
BTW, this was my second Asus laptop (both having hardware issues) and while they make some beautiful laptops, I feel these are way more fragile than the likes of HP, Dell or Lenovo.

A device like this will break even from small drops without a case. And watching how kids treat tech stuff like tablets and phones. They don't survive for very long without getting a broken screen at the very least.

      • Agree. Needs a case.

I bought my 2 high-schoolers Surface Laptops and added the UAG hard shell case. Solved the durability issue and no issues for over 2 years.

Surface Laptop 4 on release seem to be out of date already, their chip is one 1yr old at least.

    • +5

You get these for proven tech with great build quality and awesome display. If you want the latest and most powerful then look elsewhere.

      • -2

        awesome display

As long as it doesn't get yellow burn marks or cracks in the glass like Surface Books are renowned for.

        • Fair call but every laptop has a flaw of some sort.

        • +2

Really? Have a surface pro 4 going strong for many years except for the battery life (and a loose hinge replaced under warranty). Screen beats many brand new laptops in terms of brightness and colour accuracy.

        • +2

It's not just Surface Books (of which I had 2 replacements). I've had 2 replacement Surface laptop 3's because of hairline screen cracks too, both under warranty. I don't expect the Surface laptop 4 to be any different. The external design is stil the same. No rubber between the glass and the aluminium frame. It's bound to happen eventually. My second one took just under 2 years to develop a crack because I was extremely careful with it, but eventually it happened. Luckily just within the 2 year warranty period the replacement came with.

Other option is to just get from Microsoft direct with shopback Xbox gift card. Ends up being $1024 for 8gb model and $1222 for 16gb plus i think 1.5% cashback.

    • Will Microsoft do price match ?

    • Is there a limit on the gift cards you can use on a single purchase?

      • +1

Pretty sure there isn't as you redeem the cards into your Microsoft account which then just becomes credit in your account which you use to buy whatever you need from the Microsoft store.

        • Just wondering if someone would confirm the maximum amount of money you can store in a Microsoft account is USD1,000 or USD equivalent in your country or region's currency or if the balance exceeds AUD 1,000, you might temporarily be unable to redeem money to your Microsoft account or make purchases using your account balance.

    • +2

On top of this if you go via Unidays you can get the same laptop + Surface Headphones 2 for $1199 before any gift card discounts - https://www.myunidays.com/AU/en-AU/partners/microsoft/view . Not too bad if you're in the market for a decent pair of headphones as well.

      • +1

Thanks , i purchased this plus with a 10% gift card from shopback deal came down to 1079 with free headset

      • Hi,
Can you confirm if the surface headphones 2 offer is still available? I cannot see that via myunidays anymore :(

        • Looks like it's finished now unfortunately.

    • +1

      Awesome
      Thanks for the tip
10% cashback made it worth getting the 16GB ram directly from Microsoft.
I thought it would be more painful typing 14 x 25 random letters/numbers worth of gift cards but was surprisingly easy

      • How did you get the 10% cashback. Shopback website says up to 6%.

        • +2

Via the Xbox gift cards in the Shopback app

Add via redeem.microsoft.com to your Microsoft account

  • How portable are the 15" versions? Used a smaller one for work which I loved but prefer a bigger screen, would look like a weirdo trying to carry one around in a shop lol

    • bit bulky in size and still portable (fair weight)

  • +1

Just bought one, and think later !
