    Thx OP

    Hows this compare with lodge?

    • +3

      They're $5 generic cast iron bits from china. I mean, they'll work…

To expand on this, they won't be as thick, have such a nice factory finish, will be a bit more patchy especially in terms of heat spots (due to uneven chemical composition), and if really dodgy, may have weak stress lines.

      Long story short, they'll work.

    Awesome kit!

But pain in the ass to clean cast iron when out camping in a remote site.

    • +15

Is it? I just add water nuke it in the fire for a bit and wipe it our with paper towel. Back on the fire to dry out/sanitise , bit of oil and its done

      • Yes! At home can get by with very little too.
        All I do is:
        1) wipe/scratch off any big bits of food so they don't get boiled in next step
        2) boil 500ml of water for my 23cm pan. In 2 or 3 goes, pour some water in and scrub with a plastic dish brush, pour dirty water out. Water should be pretty clean at the end.
        3) wipe dry with a paper towel and put back on stove to air dry.

No seasoning (pan is already seasoned), no oiling, no rust and pan works fine.
Maybe my pan is easier to clean than Lodge etc as I have an old one where they bothered to grind the floor of the pan smooth, rather than leaving the sand casting texture.

        • Burn it with fire.

People make a drama out of cleaning cast iron. You honestly don't need to baby these things. If they rust, just give them a good scrub and season with another coat of oil..

The beauty of cast iron is you can't really damage them. It's just a lump of iron.

      • +3

It's fine when you're at home. But when you're camping for a week, it's not an ideal environment to scrub, and season.

        • +10

Then don't scrub and season. Again, people make too much of a drama out of maintaining these. You don't need to baby them as much as people make it out.

Cook, leave it overnight and clean in the morning? Go ahead.

Cook, boil water in it and wipe dry with a towel to clean? Sure.

Cook, never clean, leave it a day, give it a wipe and cook again? Sure, if you don't mind cleaning in yesterdays stuff, go right ahead.

Sure it's best to season with oil after each use, but you don't need to. A lot of people who are into cast iron are just hardcore, so maintenance suggestions tend to be hardcore.

          • @mahdoo: this , where i used to work we just threw them around , but some are 10 years old and still going

        • +1

Is it going to have noticeable rust after a day or two?

          • +3

@Caped Baldy: I've not used this set, but I had a lodge set for a few years. Sometimes went a week without washing them lol.

They only ever rusted when I left them outside boiling overnight - burnt the coating right off them. And even after that (8+ hours burning dry on a gas stove) All it took to get back in working order was a salt + baking soda scrub, then an oil coat and season in the oven.

        • +1

Many many years ago when I went camping with my Pop the first thing he did was get the 12 quart oven out and drop a big block of lard in it.
Everything was then cooked in that for the next week. Never washed once. Last meal of the trip it was tipped out and wiped down.
Probably still in the shed rust free today.

        • If someone on ALONE can do it for 80 days, then it can't be that hard.

      • It's possible. Some people sit them directly in hot coals which changes structure or somethingorother of the metal. I've seen collectors of vintage cast iron on youtube who avoid rare/valuable cast if it looks "red" from being mistreated/burned in that way.

    • +1

I started using my camping cast iron at home. This way it's seasoned and pretty much a wipe to clean down while camping.
Haven't used my lodge cast iron frying pans in months.

This is so cool. I'd get this if i had people to actually go bush with.

    • Use it at home……

    • Just find a few hitchhikers. At least that is what the movies say is the way to make friends in the bush

    • It's kind of dumb question can we use this at home on cooktop.. If so can v hold handle of while cooking.. Isn't it hot

  • Awesome thank you OP !!!!

  • This or a Tesla model S?

  • Just looking thru their clearance section you may want to add a spinifex telescopic spatula $1 ,
    also found
telescopic back scratcher $1 and mangrove jacks polarised sunnies $17.50- $21 seems ok , but don't know what the quality is like these days.
Think I payed $250 for a pair back in the day before I lost them immediately , then discovered Maui Jim's (Glass lenses)

  • +2

Thank you OP, just collected one from Box Hill, quite a few orders out the back ready to be picked up.

    • can't see any in stock online

  • +3

Thanks op I just picked mine up and there was a fellow ozbargainer grabbing theirs as well. This is an absolute bargain.

  • +1

Cheers OP - I picked mine up today as well. Washed and seasoned them just now.

  • For those who have had this previously or recently purchased, is the trivet that is included ok or do you need to get a different one such as https://www.anacondastores.com/camping-hiking/camp-cooking/cā€¦

    • The included trivet is more like a pot holder, to keep the hot cast iron pot/pans off your table. That's what I thought anyway…

    • Yeah more of a stand which can fit inside the oven. Not really a plate as such.

    • So need to purchase an extra trivia it is

  • Picked mine up as a click and collect from Chermside today. Lots of stock in store. It's a heavy unit…23kg! The staff were great and procured a Coles shopping trolley for me to use to wheel it back to the car.

  • Price has increase to $99

  • +2

The large pot has legs on it that prevents me from using it on an induction or gas stove.

I am thinking of cutting these off with a grinder
