  • Does Hiver 5% cashback work as it is owned by Coles?

    • Someone said it didn't work for them in the comments last time.

    • +1

It seems paying with a Hiver card gets blocked at checkout. Also mentioned last time.

We were unable to verify your chosen payment method, please check your details and try again.

    • +2

Hiver / Teachers Mutual just called me (02 8299 9534) and asked if I tried to made the $80 transaction. After confirming, they told me it was unblocked and I could try again.

However I just tried again now and it still has the same issue.

We were unable to verify your chosen payment method, please check your details and try again.

      • Hey my Amex, wouldnt work the last couple times this promo was run. This time it failed like usual the when i went to purchase them, however shortly after i got a text from amex confirming the purchase. Once i confirmed i couls only put the purchase through when i restarted the order. If i went straight to purchase it again i got the same error.

Not sure if u tried this..

        • Thanks, I already purchased with another card so all good.

I was just trying to pay with Hiver for the possible 5% cashback, but it still failed even after the bank said they unblocked it when I tried to purchase another one.

    • +2

I managed to place an order with Hiver, but guessing no luck on the cashback, unfortunately.

The transaction took quite a while to clear, but seems to have finally come through as COLES GROUP LIMITED - TOORONGA with a merchant code of 5399 - Miscellaneous General Merchandise.

  • +1

    Thanks op. I bought a $500 voucher for $400!

    • Can you use the cards with other offers? And can you split payment

      • +1

Yes can use with other offers like the uber pass/one discounts - this just adds as a payment method.

  • Payment actually went through and worked unlike last time. Paid via AmEx. Now to wait for the gift cards to arrive.

    • I got mine within minutes it was pretty quick..

  • +30

No issues with payment at all. Bought heaps last time and regretted not buying more. Snagged another $800.
I don’t have a car so I rely on Uber for transport. This is like a 20% discount on fuel / rego / insurance for me 🤷‍♂️

    • I also regretted not buying more.

    • Also a good way to hit min spends on a credit card for any churners out there. As far as I can tell - once these are in your wallet, they don’t really expire. I would just try not to stock up on >1-2 years’ worth, given financial implications of having a bunch of cash sitting somewhere (consider inflation / other potential returns).

        • +10

Purchasing gift cards will come through as credit (same as withdrawing cash)

Not true. It comes through as a regular purchase.

charge you a higher interest rate

If you're paying interest on a credit card, you're not doing it right.

excluded in any minimum spend promotions.

          Not true.

            • +9

@dyldotmid: You do you mate, my card churning experience + the collective Ozbargain experience speaks otherwise. Having bought gift cards from Shopback, Cashrewards, supermarkets, rewards portals, etc.. for years using credit cards - never been charged a cash advance, interest, fees a single time.

              • -4

@CaptainHoltisDad: I'm sure that's happened for you but it all comes down to how the merchant has the transaction coded.

I'm literally just pointing out facts that are in your credit cards T&C. Just don't be surprised if you do get charged and your bank tells you it's within their right to charge you. I personally don't risk it as I deal with this so often and have to regularly educate people on reading their contracts before blaming the bank for.stealing money from them.

        • +1

Why do you have to pay interest when using credit card? Only spend what you can afford. Except annual fee

          • -3

@bird380: Cash Advance has no interest free period.

Buying give cards technically falls under cash advance.

            • @dyldotmid: Which bank is this? That sounds truly bizarre (gift card = cash advance), have not heard of this before.

              • -2

@deadpoet: This was from the T&C of Westpacs credit card but you'll find every major bank will define cash advance as including "cash equivalent" purchases.

                • +4

@dyldotmid: From what I understand, gift cards aren't considered cash equivalents because they usually have the "cannot be redeemed for cash" clause in their T&Cs

                  • -3

@DreadedWasabi: You'll notice with almost all the clauses, they are very vague. You're best to call your bank and specifically ask if gift cards are included. If you can get them to advise you it won't be a cash advance you'll be fine, otherwise you run the risk.

                • @dyldotmid:

This was from the T&C of Westpacs credit card

Is this new? Earlier this year I signed up for Westpac CC with the offer spend $4k get $400 cashback. I hit the $4k by mostly buying GCs from Shopback.

                  https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/11694859/redir

Also with your logic I wonder how banks would know if I buy GC from Coles/Woolworths

                  • @foxes28: I wonder if @WookieMonster could provide any insight here.

                    • +2

@caperite: Thank goodness you only wanted to provide insights on that comment and not the comment about cash advances! I drafted a response and then deleted it after it became too long… but I’ll use part of that response for my reply.

@foxes28 Westpac would have no way of knowing unless you provided them a copy of the purchase receipt.

When you use your Westpac CC to purchase something from a Coles or Woolworths supermarket, Westpac will receive limited information from Coles regarding that transaction. The information they get is where you have purchased, not so much what you have purchased. For example, Westpac will see you purchased from a Coles in a specific location, plus the Merchant Category Code (MCC) received from Coles will indicate it is a supermarket (5411). However, Westpac will never know what exactly you have purchased, as Coles will (almost) always report that they are a supermarket.1 (Remember, the MCC should be used to describe the type of business you’re purchasing from, rather than the type of items you’re purchasing.)

Westpac could try to guess that you purchased gift cards at Coles or Woolworths by looking at the amount you spent, but there would be a lot of false positives (i.e. a large family doing a massive fortnightly grocery shop) and I would question whether it is even worth the hassle…

The clause that was pulled out from the Westpac CC T&Cs regarding cash advances is not new; it was there at the start of this year (and I would bet it has been there for many, many years). It’s just that there is confusion as to how Westpac determines whether a transaction is “cash-equivalent”. If I was a betting person, it would be determined using MCCs, because that was strongly hinted by a Westpac customer service agent I spoke to a while ago.

I strongly suspect that only the following MCCs would be marked as cash-equivalent by Westpac, because merchant using one of these MCCs can provide you with cash:

                      • Gambling Transactions (7995)
                      • Financial Institution - Automated Cash Disbursements (6011)
                      • Financial Institution - Manual Cash Disbursements (6010)
                      • Financial Institution - Merchandise And Services (6012)
                      • Quasi Cash - Merchant (6051)
                      • Securities - Brokers and Dealers (6211)
                      • Wire Transfer Money Orders (4829)

There is always a chance that Westpac could also start marking specific merchants (e.g. Prezzee, Reward Gateway, Special, Woolworths Group gift card portal) as cash equivalent, but I would argue that is being unreasonable, as gift cards are realistically not cash-equivalent anyway. Yes, they are cash-equivalent in the sense that if you lose a gift card or it is stolen from you, you generally cannot get the funds back. However, I am struggling to think of a gift card where you can directly withdraw money from it (and this should determine whether a gift card is really cash-equivalent).

If you were wondering, I have spent over $10,000 on gift cards this year using my Westpac CC at multiple retailers (e.g. Coles, Woolworths, BIG W, Prezzee, HCF Thank You / Lifestyle Rewards, Amazon, True Rewards, Special) and have not been charged a single cent on cash advances.

                      1. The only situation I am aware of where a transaction involving a debit/credit/prepaid card at Coles or Woolworths will not use an MCC of 5411 (Grocery Stores, Supermarkets) is EFTPOS cashout. EFTPOS cashout transactions must use a specific MCC to indicate you are withdrawing cash, because that is a cash-equivalent transaction (i.e. you are obtaining cash in that transaction). That explains how EFTPOS gift cards can stop you from withdrawing cash at Coles or Woolworths, but will let you purchase gift cards and other items at Coles or Woolworths.

    • How much do you spend on Uber per week?

      • I commute to work on foot so it’s just anything else if public transport / lifts are not available.
Maybe anywhere between 0-5 trips a week, so $0 - $100? On average, probs $20-30. But this also helps for the odd Uber eats / groceries order via Uber pass too.

  • Great deal, thanks OP.

  • +5

Getting "We were unable to verify your chosen payment method, please check your details and try again." error, tried with 3 different cards. Anyone else experiencing this or know of a work around?

    • Same issue, two cards, haven't found a way around it.

  • +3

Apologies for the question. But can an ubereats card be used for uber as well and vice versa

    • +3

Yes! I have done that from the previous deal

      • Excellent

    • +1

I believe so. I have done this in the past

      • Cheers

    • +1

Can confirm, same balance shows up in both Eats and Uber apps; I bought both types

    • +1

Yes, it looks like they share the wallet the gift cards are contained in

  • Weird, my credit card is blocking the payment as 'unusual'

    • +1

Anti-scam thing, lots of scams are done through the victim purchasing gift cards, you'll have to contact your issuer

    • -8

Don't purchase gift cards on a credit cards, it gets treated as cash advance.

  • +1

These are great for sitting on the couch and getting uber eats every day. Breakfast lunch and dinner

    Huge savings. Practically making money

  • +5

If you want maximum earnings you need to signup to be an uber driver then only drive yourself around

You will get paid for the full fare but you just got 30% off

20% discount + 10% for the uberOne trial

    • +5

      uber service fee 27.5%

    • What is more realistic is trying to pick up your own food as an Uber Driver but you'd need to do this with two separate accounts.

Also might be hard to do if you're in a busy area. And I'm sure you'd get flagged relatively quickly.

    • +23

      Scott Morrison, is that you?

    • How tedious is the process to become a Uber driver? Do they check for all your family tree and ancestors?

      • +1

Police check and road worth cert need to be less then 6months old. Looking at $150 juts to get them
$20 for driving history also for SA, not sure other states.

Cost a bit just to become a uber eats driver to make $4-5 a delivery.

  • +1

So instead of buying say a $200 gift card, you need to buy 2x $100 to get the discount

    • +1

      Yes

  • +2

Last time I bought $100 and it went away very quickly (too many weekend benders) so stocked up this time. Thank you!

  • +1

Finally a decent deal rather than targeted bullsh1t offers

  • Thanks bought $100x 5

  • +3

I'm trying to tell myself that I don't need this as I'm not a big fast-food person but there's another part of me that wants to treat myself as I haven't in a while… think of it as the person on each shoulder telling me 2 different things.

    • +8

Treat yo self. Life is meant to be lived.

    • +1

you can always stockpile it for later, and say you have a gathering with friends and want to order in, you can offer to pay and get your friends to pay you back the normal/full amount and then… profit??

ok I wasn't even going to buy but now I've talked myself into it haha!

  • Thanks!

  • I wonder if Ubear/Eats gift cards are the new iTunes gift cards for money laundering.

  • Cheers OP, have ordered 2x $100 cards for $160, lord knows with the delivery/service fees i'll burn through it pretty quick though

Any idea how long the actual gift card codes take to arrive in your inbox after purchase?

    Have received the invoice

    • +2

      Mine came after 25 minutes.

  • +4

The 20% pretty much only cancels out the higher price on Uber compared to other ordering apps. But I have uber pass so still works out.

    • Which other apps?

      • +1

Menulog, Delveroo, Door Dash, all seem to be cheaper for the same restaurant often. Uber must charge higher fees hence the restaurants charge more.

        • Ahhhhh, i thought you meant ride sharing apps. The only other one i've used is Didi which stole $5 from me coz the bloody driver cancelled

          • @TheBardsTale: I used to use Ola for rides before covid, seemed to be a bit cheaper at the time, havent used it recently.

  • +1

    I keep getting the error
We were unable to verify your chosen payment method, please check your details and try again.
What the hell am I supposed to do? Tried 3 different cards for payment.

    • Called customer service. The issue is cookies. I've disabled third party cookies. If you face this issue complete the transaction in an incognito window and it will work.

      • +1

This did not work for me. I've tried in two different private browsers (both on my phone and my laptop).

        • -1

Your browser might be blocking cookies. Try using Chrome or Edge but incognito mode. Or disable blocking cookies for some time then try.

  • Or just use indriver/ola Uber is always surging these days to the point 20% off is regular price.

    • Is it possible to get around surge pricing by prebooking a time where surge is likely?
Or they surge price prebookings too>?

      • +6

As an experiment I pre-booked a week in advance for Christmas Day.

Despite showing a normal estimate at time of booking, a surge price was still tacked on after the ride.

  • Does supershopper work with this
Or wonder if we can use pubcrawler

  • +1

Bank has apparently unblocked this vendor, but I still cannot get it to go through.

    • +1

      I can't validate payment either

  • +3

Does anyone know how long it takes for the gift card to arrive? Took 5mins for the tax invoice email but I havent received the actual email with the gift card details yet.

    • +2

Yep same here still waiting for the digital cards to arrive.

    • +2

mine arrived maybe 10 mins after purchase.

    • +2

Last time it was pretty quick, this time I'm in the same boat as you. Got tax invoice and still no voucher 15 mins later.

      *edit, just came through

    • +2

      Received 25mins after the invoice.

  • why is my tax invoice saying coles supermarket haha. does that mean i get 3x points since im using amex platinum edge?

double checked my credit card charges and it says COLES

    • The bottom of any page has your answer.

    • Because Giftcards.com.au are owned by Coles group

      • yeah just realized. they doing everything now O.O

Hopefully it counts as a supermarket purchase which is triple points on some amex cards

  • Thanks OP appreciate it!

  • received invoice in few mins and giftcard came after 25mins.

  • +1

Really would have loved this offer three days ago. Stacked with my ubereats promo that expired already now. Crap timing for me

  • +1

Does anyone know if the fee for uber pass gets charged to this gift card once applied (uber cash?) or your regular payment?

    • Once you load up the card into your uber account, all payments come out of the balance (if the balance is selected as the payment method).

  • +3

I wish I had as much disposable income as all of you guys to spend on future food delivery orders.

    • +2

Same. I wish I have $1000 lying around for some cheeky 20% off Uber

  • +2

NAB card didn't work as purchasing option

  • Can this uber credit be used overseas aswel?
