1580

Direct quote from mastermik3y

Tegel Take Outs Nashville Style is so damn good! Bought a pack 2 months ago and only tried them earlier today since they are now on special at half price. Whacked them into the air fryer for around 18 minutes at 190 and turned out so juicy and it packs a punch in heat as well which is great! So much better than wicked wings from KFC!

Highly recommend!!!

Other Tegel Take Outs range are ½ price as well

Looks like the rest of the Tegel range is on sale too. The burgers are good, def great in the air fryer.

    • +3

Every time they're on half price special, I stock up heavy on the burgers - sooo good with the air fryer as you said and saving a tonne from not using Uber Eats, etc. to get my fix haha.

Wife doesn't like that our freezer is full of them and she can't fit other stuff in, but she enjoys them too so can't be too mad.

      • Do you actually make burgers with them or enjoy in another way

        • +4

          Yep, so far:
          * Burgers
          * Subway style sandwiches
          * Japanese curry
          * On its own with roast veg or salad
          * Cut up and on top of pizza

I think I might try making Mexican burritos with them next.

          • @Apostle0748: The katsu curry is an interesting idea, i usually use the buffalo tenders from Aldi but I might try these!

          • @Apostle0748: Japanese curry, what a great idea

      • Are they proper chicken or a puree like nuggets?

  • +3

Can you confirm if it's really salty? Was watching a review and the guy said it was way too salty

    • +2

Definitely wasn’t salty when I tried it several times. Guess he might have got the wrong batch or something

    • +2

That was the Louisiana version. Try the Nashville if you like hot and spicy.

    • +3

      Was this a Grego review??

    • +1

      Original isn't as salty.

The Nashville one is too salty for me, rather get original and add on own hot sauce. The burger one is slightly salty which makes sense as it's meant to be in a burger to be balanced out with other ingrediants.

    • Feeling salty is a personal thing, but, yes, I think they're quite salty.

It depends a lot on how much salt one normally eats in other things. I eat very little salt in the other things I eat, so I find the Tegel's varieties very salty.

    • +1

It really is too salty, I bought it a couple of weeks ago when it was half price. I wouldn't buy it again!

    • +3

If you like KFC you would like this

    • +4

I found Louisiana wasn't salty, more tasteless. Nashville definitely better, been stocking up with this Kiwi chucken.

    • Yes Nashville is pretty salty.

    • +1

Had the Louisiana burgers and was salty as balls. But the Louisiana portions however was actually delicious and wasn't salty. Will definitely stock up on portions.

    • They all have very juicy meat. I suspect that the way they are achieving this is via a brining the chicken in salt water.
So probably salt in the chicken plus salt in the batter

    • Had the Nashville, which was very salty

  • +1

I've stocked up on quite a few of the Nashville portions. Great in the air fryer.

  • Do they do a less spicy version?

Wicked wings for me is perfect. However Some of these murica style pre made chickens be spicy as.

  • +2

Roughly how many pieces are there in a kg bag?

    • +22

      around 1kgs worth.

    • +1

      5 to 7 pieces.

    • +3

Have opened 2 thus far, both have 7 pieces.

    • Thanks

    • Bag had 7 pieces. 3 drumsticks, 1 wing, 3 breast pieces. Was quite salty, and the skin/coating didnt crisp up completely in the oven; cooked for just over an hour maybe could have left it in there longer?

  • +2

Tried the Louisiana portions. Very salty.

  • +3

I found the Nashville too salty. Will give this a go.

"Better than Wicked Wings" <- sounds promising coz those KFC wings are pretty darn good.

  • -5

These are awful. The chicken remained red inside despite cooking for extra time. Not worth the food poisoning.

    • +5

Are you sure it was undercooked? It could be red from food colouring used as a part of the manufacturing process.
Do you have a meat thermometer? You can pick up a decent one for $30 and you never need to guess if something is safe to eat.
When I cooked these in my air fryer I found they took less time than what was recommended.

    • I always overcook frozen chicken after having the same issue. Extra 10 minutes or so to be certaiy

    • +3

How is that the products fault?
Seems like someone can't cook chicken properly

  • +5

The burgers are insanely good. Do em in the air fryer.

  • +16

Tried the Louisiana portions. Very salty.

I found the Nashville too salty.

Definitely wasn’t salty when I tried it several times.

    Just to settle it

    Nashville has 708mg/100g
    Louisiana has 712mg/100g

So if you one too salty, it will be the same for the other.

    • cheers,
      was such mixed 'reviews' above

and the LA patties are 720 / 100mg

      Ewww foreign chicken

      Jk

      • +6

if you check the Australian constitution you will find that NZ is actually part of AU

      • NZ full of hot (and spicy) chicks

    • That's only for the Portions Pack though…

On the Louisiana burger pack the label on the front does -not say NZ chicken and on the back is stamped:

PRODUCED AND PACKED IN NEW ZEALAND USING INGREDIENTS FROM MULTIPLE ORIGINS.

  • These portions have bone in ?? Seems like they do just want to check…

    • +6

Looks like it. I like my chicken overly processed, crushed into mush and then reformed with super glue and fillers.

    • +3

The burgers (700g) pack are boneless. Stock 'em when on special. Real chicken meat. Not the mashed together patties.

      • Yeah i think the burgers are for me, thanks

  • +1

Have had the burgers before, good stuff!

    • +1

      Agreed. Was pleasantly surprised.

  • +2

19 minutes? Sure about that? The instruction at the back says 45 to 50 mins at 180C on an air fryer.

    • 19 sounds about right, its less than 10 for nuggets.

      • +1

That's interesting. Have cooked 2 bags so far (Louisiana and Nashville) and the packaging instruction did say 50 - 60 mins @ 200C and 45 - 50 mins @ 180C for Oven and Air Fryer, respectively.

        • +1

I find with my air fryer i generally have to half the time they recommend for air fryers and definitely more than half what they say for ovens. No idea why that is. But i set to a lower temp than they say and still have to do less time than they say to do. I am not talking about this product but a lot of products in general or even some of the recipes i see online for air fryers…

        • The Southern Fried chicken pieces from Aldi, Coles, and Woolworths are 28 minutes at 180 C. They came out from the air fryer better than KFC everytime. I wonder why these Tegle brand require longer cooking time.

    • -2

I've personally had to cook them for like 30-40 minutes in an air fryer

      • -2

Cheap air fryers will do that.
        19mins in my Phillips

        • My Philips will not do these in 19mins, still half raw. I do 160 for 40mins

  • +6

There is nothing better than KFC wicked wings, you're an absolute liar.

  • +3

As someone who has had their local KFC flooded out in the February floods, these are the closest i've found. For the burger style cook in an air fryer for a crispy coating or in a regular oven for a more moist chicken.

    • +1

      agreed!

      +1 for moist

  • Any Korean version?

  • +1

66% chicken not the worse I've seen.

  • -3

Are these imported from China and made here?

    • +2

100% NZ Chicken, and Produced & Packed in NZ, as per packaging.

  • Are these spicy?

    • The Nashville ones are.

  • +2

These aren't very spicy, i was expecting hotter. That said the louisiana burgers on brioche rolls with whatever salads/cheese preferred is just great. Add a nice serving of sriracha to get it mildly spicy as you would expect. The portions are good in the airfryer, I feel like the boneless burgs are better value

    • I feel like the boneless burgs are better value

      why doi u feel this?

      • The portions you get theres a LOT of bone - primarily 2 rib portions, lot of weight there. Bags are always full of excess breading. The burgers less excess breading and of course no bones. Take the bones out of the equation and i expect to be minimal weight difference and a lot less buggerising around trying to tetris a pack into the airfryer.

  • These are legit. Loved the whole Take Out range back home and was pleasantly surprised to see them at Woolies here

  • +2

My kiwi friend said Tegel is local KFC supplier. Honestly, it is much better than oz KFC fried chicken.

  • +1

I heard that the burgers are amazing in a bun with lettuce, cheese and mayo. Similar-ish to a zinger burger apparently. Got some in my freezer from the last sale, can't wait to try them!

    • im keen on slapping some leftover KFC coleslaw in these badbois

  • These are amazing

  • +1

For the muslim ozbargainers, these are Halal :)

    • -4

Guess I have to boycott them now, thanks a lot.

  • -2

Was going to try the burger option, but no thanks. No idea where it's coming from

PRODUCED AND PACKED IN NEW ZEALAND USING INGREDIENTS FROM MULTIPLE ORIGINS.

    • -3

Neg if you like, as long as you educate yourself.

You are mistaken if you think these Burger options are NZ chicken

      https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/0000000000…

      • +1

The back of the pack in your link says 100% nz chicken. The product includes herbs and spices, presumably from countries other than nz.
It is very likely you are mistaken in this case.

      • I guess reading and comprehension are not your strong point.

But from your own link none the less.

The front image says "NZ raised cage free" and the back image says at the top "100% New Zealand Chicken" and then at the bottom says "PRODUCED AND PACKED IN NEW ZEALAND USING INGREDIENTS FROM MULTIPLE ORIGINS"

Blind Freddy would tell you all three packets are 100% NZ

  • are they boneless?

    • +1

The portions aren't. I would assume that the chicken burgers are (haven't tried the burgers, only the portions).

  • What mayo do you guys recommend with the burgers? :)
