    The dollar to antenna ($ : Î ) ratio= 53.50
    Too expensive
    No deal

Well I thought this was funny.

  • Just got it, thanks!

  • On a serious note, does this have ASUS-WRT

  • Does this support vpn?

    • Do you mean site to site or do you mean running all internet traffic through a VPN like NordVPN?

I don't know but I doubt it does either, those are features on high end networking equipment, the later is very complicated to achieve on PFSense and is only just being added to Unifi routing equipment. It's much easier to achieve on a per device basis via native apps.

Not necessarily an expensive feature. You can get cheap gl.inet routers that run all traffic through a VPN at reliable speeds, or their top of the line Wifi 6 router (which is only ~$130) that can do up to ~500Mb/s with Wireguard.

        • Thanks for the info, I hadn't seen those before, I may have a use case for a cheap device like that in the future.

    • Asus TUF-AX3000 VPN support.

      VPN Client L2TP
      VPN Client OVPN
      VPN Client PPTP
      VPN Server IPSec
      VPN Server OVPN
      VPN Server PPTP
      VPN Fusion

$89 last December, but I guess that'll never happen again.

    • Never say never.

  • Our of curiosity will this work with the HFC modem NBN provides?

    • It should do

    • +2

Yep plug in the Asus to the nbn NTD.

      • Internode and some other providers requires vlan tagging on the wan port.

        • +1

Asus routers/modems have VLAN options under IPTV. Confusing I know. But it's there.

edit: whoops already been explained below me :)

        • VLAN ID for certain ISPs are not a problem with Asus routers. Go to the IPTV section.

          1. LAN.
          2. IPTV.
          3. Change Select ISP Profile to the Manual Setting.
          4. For Internet VID enter the number 2 for Internode.
          5. For Internet PRIO enter the number 0 for Internode.
          6. Apply.

save your money and get a linux

  • Does anyone reliably get full gigabit from the WAN port of an ASUS router?

I've tried an AC68U and an AX56U both with latest Merlin with packet inspection and all off and I don't get consistent results

I find the Telstra DJA0231 Smart Modem 2 gives much better consistent gigabit performance even against a quad core Asus and my pings an everything is better

After trying an AX56U I can't see how anything with a similar BCM chipset can be better so I'm reluctant to try a GS-AX6000 or AX3000 or otherwise especially given the reported issues with uploads

I was pretty much ready to try pfsense or otherwise until my Smart Modem 2 gave me decent speeds which will delay my upgrade a bit

Were you going to go with Netgate or a custom box?

I haven't been able to find a Netgate supplier in Australia and they're ridiculously expensive from overseas, I'm not sure Ubiquiti is an equivalent product but they're realistically priced at least and a UDMP will handle a 10Gbps WAN connection.

    • What issue do you mean getting gigabit from the WAN port?

I've had some issues with the incoming connection only recognising as 100mbit from the NTD>Router, possibly due to interference either inside the network or from the NBN side. I only use a cheap TPLink archer c7 tho, still should be more than capable of gigabit connection. Peak time speed test still can't complain I guess: https://www.speedtest.net/result/13616620003

      • How do you run a test like this?

        • The most basic way to check would be to check your routers negotiation for the wan port, it should be set to auto which will detect either 1000/100/10 coming in on the wan port. For my router that's easily found just under the basic settings: https://i.imgur.com/eqR9rae.jpg , you'd want to double check the advanced settings as well and just make sure Auto negotiation is on for the duplex settings.

Depending where the issue is, for example in my case I have a long run going from the NTD > Router WAN port, you could move the router closer with a known good gigabit ethernet cable (30-60cm cable) to see if there's any issues with the longer cable like interference and see if the issue persists. Not much you can do other than have the ISP check their end for interference as well if it's not inside your network.

If you have 100/40 or the like internet, if it defaults to 100 on the wan port its not going to affect you at all really (for internet that is)

  • Got one of these in the last deal and have really liked it, I haven't used any specific features but I've had no issues and it has been quick.

Anyone know a router that can do nordvpn at close to 100 megabit? Is that a dream still

    • Not at all a dream - look at gl.inet routers, they're cheap and I easily get 100Mbps+ using NordVPN on mine. Though you could get 500Mbps if you set up Wireguard instead of OpenVPN. I'm using Mullvad with Wireguard instead of NordVPN at the moment.

      • Thanks ill look into that!

  • noob Q1 : I have a S22 that can benefit, but besides that, will there be any tangible benefits to the other home clients that are all currently 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz?
    noob Q2 : what's a reasonable/sensible/recommended usb 6Ghz wifi device I can possibly plug in for computers ?
    Thanks!
    …or did I get confused vs Wifi6E ?

      …or did I get confused vs Wifi6E ?

Yes, This router is Wifi 6 with 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands.

Answer for Q1. What type of PC or laptop do you have? You might find that your PC or laptop wifi card can be swapped out. I manage to upgrade my 4-year-old PC with a new Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX200 from eBay. It is pretty easy to DIY to upgrade.

  • Not tri band correct?

    • Asus TUF-AX3000 is dual band. Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX6000 is tri-band.

  • This or TP-Link TR2100v?

    • This.

  • Would this work for FTTN? I think there's a telephone wire that comes to the lounge room.

    • No, It has to be a modem that supports FTTN.

    • This is a router only, you will still require a VDSL modem.

      • Are there any VDSL modem/routers that have a good performance?

    • You would need a VDSL2 modem as well. You can bridge that in modem mode (e.g. the router your ISP gave you or another) with wifi disabled, and use this router for all your routing functions & needs.

    • I couldn't get my Netgear router from Aussie Broadband to bridge reliably so I just disabled wifi on it and plugged the Asus into one of its LAN ports. Asus works fine in this way. Can also easily re-enable wifi on the Netgear if I need it, as it seems to play nicer with some older devices e.g. my PS3 can't see the Asus but connects to the Netgear.
