Not bad. Though slightly edged out by the motorola edge 20 fusion. Pun intended.

    • well played

  • Seems like a good phone for the price . Triple camera, 5G, huge display, headphone jack and sd slot. If I needed a new phone would contemplate buying.

Motorola can't compete simply because their software support is terrible , can't imagine even thinking of buying their products

      • +2

        Can confirm.
        Haven't had a motorola since my g5+.
It was a great budget phone for the price, but software updates were absolutely shocking.
Can't remember for sure, but I seem to recall it never getting a major version android upgrade while I had it.

It's a real shame as for the price everything about it was great, and it was one of very few phones with dual sim AND separate microSD (3 slots total).
If motorola got their sh*t together with software updates, they would really be able to come back as a strong competitor in the market, especially given they run mostly stock android, which we all seem to prefer.

        • Most still stuck in Android 12. there are rumour of getting Android 13 one day !

          • @rjams23: lots of phones are stuck on android 12 …… especially budget phones.

      • +1

I have a G30 and the moto desktop is pretty bad - got around it by using Nova launcher, no issues now - just the average camera but the device is solid, battery is excellent (really great). Was so cheap like this deal.

  • +7

Would be great if it was $199 again from 2 months ago.

    Other notable specs:
    SD840, 6GB, 128GB, NFC, FHD+

    • +7

      SD480 not 840

      • +1

        Oops sorry. Typo.

      • LOL oh man and that makes a big difference

    • Note it's an IPS display, not amoled.

  • +1

Note that this is last year's model. G52 already got released.

    • +2
      • Actually that's the one I meant that just got released last month

      • +2

G62 has less RAM… But will likely get Android 13 where's this one probably won't.

      • +1

The phone seems identical, apart from the G51 having a larger screen.

        • Yeah the G51 5g has a 6.8' inch screen.
The main reason I bought it. Most phones have 6.5 or so.

      • 6.5" FHD+ 120 Hz ultra-smooth display
        Dolby Atmos® and stereo speakers

  • How likely is it that this will get Android 13?

    • +5

      Magic 8ball says no.

    • Motorola aren't great with updates…

    • +1

wasn't included in motorolas software update leak

appears that motorola haven't committed to an updated internally, pretty poor for such a new phone that ships with pretty much stock android

that being said, no release is better than a broken release

    • Its meant to get Android 13 (following the policy of Motorola) however they have not specified the model.

But then they haven't specified the following models either: Motorola Edge 20, Edge 20 Lite, Edge 20 Pro, Edge Plus, Moto G60, (Moto G51 5G), Moto G52, Moto G22, Moto G31, Moto G40 Fusion, and Moto G71 5G and they are meant to get via policy.
      So……..

  • +1

I like these, just don't expect much from camera

  • Is this dual sim ?

    • Dual SIM with hybrid SD slot.

  • Just picked up a G50 for $199 a few months ago, pretty good for the price, other than a wifi issue that only happens on my home network (suspect it has issues with jumping between different mesh poitns).

  • Reviews say screen response time is a deal breaker for gamers. Price is good though.

    • But its not a gaming phone. So why would you even?

      • +1

Plenty of people penny pinch or are on a tight budget but still want to play the occasional game. Hard to justify a gaming phone if you're lucky to game on it once or twice a week.

        • Perhaps i should have been clearer. Sure you can play games on this. But dont expect screen response times like in dedicated gaming phones though.

          • +1

@xoom: There are plenty of phones that aren't "gaming phones" that have good response times. The review mentions this phone is particularly bad. I also think that advertising a 120Hz screen would lead to the expectation of good response, so it's worth warning people about. By the way I game just fine on a Realme 7 5G and my kid on a Realme 6. You don't need to spend big to get a phone that can game.

            • @syousef: My take is It's mobile gaming… If the phone runs the game that's probably good enough at this price point.

But you are right, just because a phone advertises a good refresh rate doesn't mean it has good pixel response times. A great example of this is apples devices that aren't OLED models (my device is the iPad Pro), they exhibit dark level smearing because of this.

              • @Castcore: Any gamer would know that a game can launch but still be unplayable due to lag, stuttering or other glitches.

  • +2

it looks like a decent phone, newish model released dec 21

sadly there may not be an android 13 release for this device, motorola leak didn't include this device

bit surprising with such a new mid range phone, especially considering motorola ships with pretty stock android

  • How's the camera on this phone?

    • +1

I had 3 moto phones and the camera isn't good.

  • +1

Decent deal. 6GB ram and giant screen if you don't mind a big phone, and 5G support.

To me, this is a better option than buying a redmi for example from overseas.
There's another post here for a Redmi Note 11S @ $283 and with only 4GB ram!, and potentially a long wait and no warranty.

  • I wanted this but to no stock bought the $198 TCL. Got a heap of junk!

    • +1

yeah, honestly i think most of the budget / midrange phones are a waste of money

much better off getting an old flagship for the same price

you look at the samsung a23 with it's 50mp camera which looks atrocious, previous 5mp cameras look better, doesn't even have NFC and it's still 4g

better off getting a flagship in as new condition from 2019 for the same price that is better in every way

      • No one who buys budgie phones buys Samsung budgies, because they are usually crap. I usually buy Chinaphones or off-brand budgies like Nokia, Moto, etc.

  • Do people actually use Norton Mobile Security …?

  • Are there any good custom roms for this Motorola model?

  • I'm tempted as I need to sell my S10 - but this is too much of a downgrade in terms of processor i feel.

    • flagship from 2019 crap all over these budget / mid phones

i just picked up a g8s (old stock but new) for the same price, the s10 is comparable - if it's serviceable then thats money better spent because modern 200 - $400 phones are a downgrade

      • I got the A73 and it had OLED Screen issues on the first one I got so I returned it and then got another from Harvey Norman which also had the same issue..

Returned it (they were very good about it) and caved and got a Pixel 6 Pro 256GB from the JB Hi-Fi 10% off coupon.

  • When does this deal expire?

  • +1

Just bought this and it came with a tpu case out of the box. Cool. I always appreciate that and wish more phone makers would do it.
