      • Yeah I don't think they taste as good but at less than a dollar each it's a cheap meal.

  • +2

My go to lunch as a cash strapped uni student way back in 2005. I may be wrong buy I think wollies used to have their own Home Brand version.

    Who misses the Chico Chicks?

    • Chiko Chicks still a thing. Currently Annette Melton.

  • Something about the imagery of a Chiko Roll being born, tickles my fancy…

  • -3

    These are gross

    • +3

      That is UnAustralian

    • -7

yeah, agree, gross! Even worse than the full of salt american offal aka spam.

  • +1

I just bought an air fryer, do they cook a good Chicko Roll 🤔

    • +4

They're only edible if you use a lot of oil

      • +1

I'm sure there's already a lot of oil in them.
        Air fryer would be fine.

        Ps. They almost vegetarian.

    • +4

I have cooked them in the air fryer, and they turn out acceptable.

    • +2

      180 degrees for 20 mins.

For best results turn half way through.

      Bon appetite, mate.

      • +2

I microwave most of my larger goods first then air fry. A chiko roll would take 2 mins microwave then 10 mins the air fried possibly turning after 5.

    • +1

Yeah they are not too bad. Some good tips in the replies here. You can give em a bit of a spray with canola oil between microwave and air fryer if you want more of a deep-fried experience.

  • +3

Damn these went from $2.60 to $3.60 in two years

    38.5% inflation!

    • +1

It was $1.80 at half price at coles regularly before the covid.

Than $1.90, $2.1, $2.30, and I stop noticing them so often.

    • +2

      The escalating price of cabbage.

Came for the bargains, stayed for the Chiko roll history lesson.

    • At the peak of its popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, 40 million Chiko Rolls were sold annually in Australia.

    • They were invented in Bendigo.

    • Invented by Frank McEncroe, inspired by the Chinese spring roll and first sold in 1951 as the "Chicken Roll" despite not actually containing chicken.

    • The snack was designed to be easily eaten on the move without a plate or cutlery.

    • A Chiko Roll's filling is primarily cabbage and barley, as well as carrot, green beans, beef, beef tallow, wheat cereal, celery and onion.

    • The filling is partially pulped and enclosed in a thick egg and flour pastry tube, designed to survive handling at football matches

    • In September 2016 a disagreement in the Parliament of Australia over the origins of the Chiko Roll occurred. The Nationals' Member for Calare Andrew Gee, Labor’s Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters and Member for Riverina Michael McCormack all claimed the snack originated in their respective hometowns.

A true chiko roll needs to be deep fried and kept under heat lamps for half a day.

If you do find a takeaway shop that sells them they often just cook them to order… its just not the same.

    • +1

Buy yourself a chiko roll at the train station and you wont even make it to your destination before it starts coming out

  • +6

Chiko roll + 2 potato cakes (not scallops) w/ chicken salt = chef kiss (and also a great fat Friday brekkie)

  • -1

    Are these like twinkies?

    • +1

Silly customer, you cannot hurt a Twinkie.

  • They taste plain and no real chicken inside you might as well not buy any just pastry pure pastry

    • +5

      No chicken in Chiko rolls.

    • +4

They never had chicken in them.

    • +1

Mutton, cabbage, barley, celery, rice, carrots and spices.

    • Haha, no chicken :)

      • Haha yeah I knew I’m just throwing a joke some ppl don’t get it

        • Help me to get it then. What's the punchline?

  • Highly recommend to not get these even if its 8 @3.50.These are just outright horrendous.Bland, mushy and soggy af.

    • +10

You know you're supposed to cook them right?

    • Thaw for 1 minute in microwave then 20 minutes in air fryer not soggy then.

      • Good idea but still it won't compensate for the non-existent flavour

    • Soggy? how did you cook it? Mine came out super crispy when I shallow fried them in a pan.

      • same shallow fried it. I am talking about the filling being soggy btw.

  • dammit! your description makes me wanna grab 2 in each hand and go footie

  • Fish lips and Assholes….Yum!

  • Back in the day if Frank ran out of cabbage he would just put lucerne hay in the Chiko rolls:-

  • According to my sauces, Bendigo's unofficial Mayor "Claude" eats Chiko rolls on a regular basis! ;-)

    • +1

You cannot trust the word of tomato or soy…

  • Loving it since childhood. Recently found this package design is amazing!

  • Outta stock?

  • All gone at my local woollies. Lot’s of other items discounted though, many at 1/2 price. Good day for grocery shopping.

Stopped buying these years ago when the became halal certified.

    • +3

Who'd have thought Mohammed would care which way we were facing when killing a cabbage…

    • Wow, you sure showed 3.2 per cent of Australia's population who's boss

  • I mean who hasn't had one of these and be an Australian? Would i buy one in my older years? No.

  • 6g of fat per 100g

You can do a lot worse.

    • Yeah you can do a lot better too.

Of that half is saturated fat, so 4g per Chiko roll, and 640mg sodium.

      • You can do a lot better but perhaps not any better at all in a ‘class’ of food which I might include; meat pies, pizza, KFC, burgers, chips etc

I’d be interested in less fatty food in this ‘class’ I just made up. Any ideas ?

Generally though isn’t 6g/100g of fat pretty good?

        • It's probably ok compared to other junk, yeah.
Not sure, something with next to no saturated fat and less salt be good.

  • +2
