Extra $50 in your bin if you go through Cashrewards app

      $70 if you through SB

      • Thanks, I sent my cancellation notice to Superloop and go with Exetel via SB

I'm going to advise that people avoid if they have daily video calls &WFH.

I joined them on their last deal and am counting down the days to getting out.
We changed from the equivalent plan at Aussie, immediately had lag in games and in my daily work calls. Wife, kids and I frequently had to switch video off and everything was slower. Speed tests at 11am on a weekday morning on a 100mb plan were barely touching 40mbs and even when we got speed test results that were north of 70, the lag issues never stopped. Is it possible that their capacity to manage the connection is rubbish?
Set up and, thankfully, disconnect were both reasonably easy with the exception of the required 30 day notice period.
    Avoid.
16 days to go for me fyi!

    • +10

I'm counting down as well. Can't wait to get out of this terrible customer service provider.

    • what area do u live in? is it cause you have a high density population or just exetel not able to handle all these new customers ?

    • +10

I have commented before on this issue. They throttle encrypted VPN connection.

My work laptop can't never get the proper speed when WFH through company VPN (dropped from 100mbps to 5mbps) and audio/video calls dropped out every 10 secs. I contacted their customer support and advised the issue after I changed to Superloop, they cancel my plan and refunded me immediately because it was not fit for purpose.

Wish they would advise somewhere tho. Spent 5 hours with IT helpdesk to reliaze it was Exetel throttle encrypted connection.

      • so exetel and superloop dont allow a vpn connection ?

        • +10

I use Superloop now as they don't throttle your VPN connection. Never had issue with them for work VPN or my personal VPN torrents stuff.

For exetel, they definitely has some control on VPN connection.

My work requires me to connect work laptop with company VPN and log into virtual machines which Exetel had million troubles with.

I tried my own VPN for my friends to access my local NAS library, the speed was terrible, a 80%+ reduction and constant drop out.

My personal advise is if u need VPN connection for any reason, avoid Exetel.

          • @nico8amy: Thanks. You may have just saved me a massive headache.

        • +1

Superloop is fine for me for VPN, I think nico is saying that they changed to superloop to fix the issue.

      • +3

If connections are throttled by Exetel it is not because they are encrypted.
I have been with Exetel using a VPN since 2010

        Current Exetel service: 50/20
        Ookla speed w/o VPN: 53.81Mbps/14.14Mbps
Ookla speed via VPN/corporate proxy: 50.60Mbps/13.59Mbps

        • What VPN ur company use? It also probably depend on what type of internet policy they implemented. My work laptop is heavily scrutinized. I only suggest it was Exetel's issue because all the connection issue went away after I switched to Superloop in 15mins.

          • @nico8amy: The VPN tech has changed several times over the years, but the experience is the same (the VPN adds a small amount of overhead). Currently TCP-based.

I have a generic ZTE modem, I don't think there's anything special about the package I buy, and I've never observed shaping of the VPN traffic. I'd need another provider if so.

There are (years old) Whirlpool threads about shaping P2P on Exetel, firewalls can do a "best guess" about the content of encrypted streams, maybe your traffic looks like P2P from the outside?

    • Agreed, unreliable connection with them using hybrid.

    • Just my experience I have been wfh full time on exetel and a couple laptops running on vpn back to office network and haven’t seen issue joining teams calls audio and video.
      Probably others having different experience
Btw I am in fixed IP that you can select under your account. I am hearing NAT setup may impact the connection and I have been avoiding the security service they are offering

      • Btw I am in fixed IP that you can select under your account.

Is that a free service or you need to pay extra?

        • It’s free and you can change it if required like being dos attack/etc

    • Are you using the home security package?

People here have said not to use it. I have cancelled my Superloop plan and going to exetel in 20 days, not sure if I am making the right decision or not :D

  • Anyone yet tried the more nbn that has that special deal for commonwealth customers? Are they any good?

    • +2

Tangerine has the same price as more for 6 months. They are the same provider as more.

      • how is tangerine? do they have the 30 day notice to cancel like Exetel?

  • +5

BTW same price @ superloop too

    • +10

And no 30 day notice leaving clause too

      • -1

No they do have that, they won't pro-rata so you have to pay for the whole month.

        • +6

You can leave superloop anytime just no refund for current billing period.

Example: It's last day of billing period. Can call superloop to cancel that day with no further charge. Exetel would require 30 days charge from that date.

    • +1

And same as spintel without 30 days notice.

  • I live in a unit with fttp. Super loop, Aussiebb, leaptel, TPG can find my address fine on their website but some like Exetel and tangerine state I don't have NBN.

I have NBN here for the last 4 years.

How do I go about signing up? I even have the locationID as some IT rep was helpful to give me this.

    • It is a sign from God. Stick with the ones that can find you and stay away from Exetel.

  • I am on the 50/20 plan but all the speed test returned 25 down. Superloop was much better.

  • +1

I’m with exetel for 6 months atm. Pretty happy so far.

One thing that may help others with google nest wifi- I’m on 50/20 but tests only showed about 20/20 through nest router but when I connected laptop direct to modem bypassing nest I got the full McCoy. After a bit of research found that a fixed Ip with exetel should solve this and it did. Fortunately they offer this at no extra cost.

    Hope this helps someone.

    • I had trouble with similar speeds, after getting 50mbps with my last 2 providers and signing up with Exetel for the same i was only getting 20ish mbps. I kept complaining via email for first couple of weeks and after saying there was nothing wrong it finally came good and hasnt changed ever since. Perhaps this was the problem I was having too.

  • This or superloop?

    • +5

      Superloop

    • +1

      depends dude

if you going through SB/CR and get the Cashback of $70/$50, it might be worthwhile to get exetel, and supposedly pay exetel @ the end for whatever you need to pay them (for the 30 day notice period).

Otherwise if you care more about fast connection, better customer service, no 30 day notice, etc. stuff then superloop is better.

if you aint going through CR/SB, then no point going with exetel.

  • cashrewards $50 cashback aswell

  • +1

Steer clear…. I had a horrible experience. They throttled my speeds and even when I speed boosted it lasted 30 mins then back to my throttled speedx2..when I requested to cancel they refused then the next day my speeds became normal.

    • I wonder what did they say when you said "they refused"

  • This is or Dodo?? Located city in WA

Can I cancel within 6months during the discounted ??

    • Why would you choose between shit and piss when you can have better things for the same price?!
And yes, you may cancel albeit with a ridiculous 30-day notice.

  • +9

What is the deal here? Isn't this the same price as Spintel? Every NBN retailer is providing 50/20 for $54 for six months.

    • Bit harsh, but since when has it been $54/6 months?

  • +1

Been with them for 1 year.
Initially had an issue with an encrypted VPN for work. They sent out a replacement modem and this fixed the issue.
I'm on 50/20 and get 45/14 at anytime during the day or night; I am 950m from exchange.
Customer service has been ok. Good support on their forums and Whirlpool. Techs are fairly basic when it comes to phone support for more complex issues. The few issues I have had have been solved in a reasonable time.
Reliability is close to 100% for up time. Online gaming is good, no issues.
Plex server works fine for remote play.
P2P speeds can use full bandwidth when needed.

    • Echo that their phone technical support is pretty useless.

I had 2 weeks of downtime because tech support just wanted to blame my router.
Ended up sourcing 3 spare routers from Facebook before they would believe that wasn't the issue and they eventually engaged NBN, who spent an hour fixing the line.

Line speed has been great since then, I get a solid 53Mbps down, 19ish Up and up to about 95 down with a speed boost.

Just thought I post this in case someone here is thinking of using a Telstra Smart Modem with Exetel.

The Telstra one worked fine with Superloop, Aussie Broadband/Origin and Dodo but I just couldn't get it to work properly with Exetel (a lot of buffering, sites/apps not loading and connection dropping out etc).

So instead hooked up the NBN box directly to the Tenda Nova Mesh WiFi unit and added the Exetel PPPoE username and password provided and it has worked fine since.

    • Oof, I've just signed up 2 services that both use the smart modem. Hopefully don't run into issues.

      • +1

Turn off ipv6 on the telstra modem if you have problems, worked for me and someone else.

        • How does one turn off ipv6?

    • +1

Turn off ipv6 on the telstra modem if you have problems, worked for me and someone else.

      • Any guides on how to do this? Sorry, can't find anything on Google, and can't find anything in the gateway.

        • Figured it out dw

      • Cheers buddy don't think I tried that but good to know.

        🍻

    • Theres many different settings to use depending on the ISP. They usually have a FAQ on their site or can call them to see whats needed when you BYO modem. I've used the telstra modem with all of mine (5 providers so far). Only Mate I had to make significant settings changes. (Also Mate is the worst company I've used by a country mile)

  • +1

Also if you do sign up make sure you log in to your My Exetel account and cancel the Home Secure trial.

Plus with your plan you do get free 5 days of speed boosts every month which is not too shabby.

Don't forget to sign up through ShopBack or CashRewards as well ($70/$50 cash back if you remain connected for at least 3 months).

    • +2

It's not obvious that there is cashback from SB or CR as it's hidden behind a click.

@deanmoriarty please put the cashback is in the description.

      • +1

Thank you for pointing that out. It’s done

  • +5

I changed to Exetel from Superloop a few months back because of the competitive deal. I had to reset my modem router as they do not do dynamic IP which was a pain and my speed went from FTTN 89Mps down to 65-70Mps down. After not being satisfied with their support I filed a complaint and asked to cancel the service within the cooling off period however they advised I have to give 30 days notice of cancellation which means you pay a full month no matter what. Not happy with my experience at all and I am now back on Superloop. Food for thought.

    • +2

Haha it's good to see Exetel has not changed after all these years. They are OK if there is no problem, but support is very hit and miss when you need it.

    • Exetel has static IP? so you didn't have to reset router?

  • Is this worth changing from ABB?

    • from all reports, probably not.

You really do get what you pay for, and if you are happy with ABB, stay put.

  • +3

This has just made me decide to leave Exetel. How can you be a loyal customer and you give better rates to newbies?

I know this is a common sales technique but why stay with a company that doesn't care about their old customers

    • +1

Did you call them up? I asked for a better deal & got the 25MB plan for $59 + a $15 credit for the first 6 months. on a 12 month contract.

      • Thanks will give it a go

    • +1

Contact them and ask what they can do. I got the 6 months of discount offered to new customers when I moved to FTTP with them, and I’ve been with them for 18 years. If you don’t ask you definitely won’t get it

      • +2

Some of these retention offers require entering a 6/12 month contract. Make sure you get all the details.

        • Thanks

        • +2

When I called about canceling my service and moving to another ISP, they initially offered me the same discount as new customers but with 12-month contract and I said no. They quickly changed the offer to discounted rate for 6 months with no contract.

      • If you don’t ask you definitely won’t get it

        yep may as well try

  • Have been with them for around 6 months, everything is okay. But there is 30 days disconnect notification and you will be give username and password connect to internet (called PPOE?)

  • +1

i have signed up with them since few months, and they are great with speed and reliability. Never contacted customer care. Hope it helps the deciders.

  • i moved to exetel during the last cashback offer, and exceltell is ok

  • I'm disgusted with Exetel, it seems my 8 years with them means nothing. All I asked for is an increase in speed as I was on the slowest speed with them and now needed faster speed to 50/20 and needed a price for 12 months. Only the 6 months deal was available, so I moved to another provider.

    • for me they waived the 30 days notice bullcrap when i moved to another provider, that was it, they aren't concerned about existing customers which is odd

  • Just wondering how beneficial the Fibre to home upgrade will be as its free on certain higher plans with Exetel
Thinking of getting this done for a new connection

    https://www.exetel.com.au/flip-to-fibre

  • I registered today through exetel website instead of ShopBack. If I cancel the order and turn to ShopBack for the cashback deal, would I still be eligible as new customer?

    • Probably not

  • I'm considering switching — my current TPG reseller (Future broadband) has very high ping times to a country nearby with a ping of 262 ms ( everyone else seems to be 100~120 ms)… In a recent online gaming match my friends commented my ping was the highest out of all of them (using an overseas server as the AU server has too few players).

  • So I switched from Superloop to Exetel 1 week back, I thought on an FTTP connection they will activate the service on a different port but instead they activated it on the same port as Superloop ( i still had 2 days remaining) so I had scramble after I woke up and setup the modem because you need to enter exetel PPOE password.

In speedtest I was getting 105 MBps and 36 MBps (100/40 plan). For me everything worked well including my office VPN and Teams but my wife was complaining that Youtube and and Instagram were buffering on her phone and not loading smoothly. So I have disabled the Home Secure package and now my wife is happy.
