Just get a sous vide on its own if you can get it cheaper

I don't seal food. Too much hassle. I just put in zip lock bag and squeeze out air once submerged in water (air displacement method?)

    Cheaper. Easier. One less appliance

    • I find vacuum sealing more convenient. season my steak, put it in the bag, clamp it in the sealer and press 1 button. And I know it's water tight.

    • Why so many negs wtf?

  • Tempted. Can anyone comment on the quality of these?

    • Reviews are good for the hardware at this price point.

      • Agreed. Pulled the trigger. I was looking at another vac sealer around this price point recently, so in my mind I've gotten the sous vide for free :)

      • I have the ISV-200W and this vacuum sealer. Got it about 9mths ago and have used regularly for steaks, pork loin, roasts, creme brulee and it's great. Very happy with it.

    • The sous vide is solid. It is very large though.

You don't need the app to use it which wasn't great when I used it last.

    • Pretty happy with mine - been using it regularly for almost 2 years. Holds temps well (tested with another inkbird probe thermometer). Mine did not come with the vac sealer so cannot comment on that.

  • Looks likely ANOVA priced themselves too high and created a market for competition.
Their similar model used to be under $100 now it's like $300

Kogan have one without wirelessly controls for $50

    • as soon as they started to make a name for themselves they jacked up the prices. I haven't heard good things about the Kogan one or the Anko one from Kmart, but I have an Inkbird ISV-200W and really happy with it.

    • So glad I got my ANOVA for $90 a couple of years ago!

  • +1

I saw that aldi was selling these for 50 bucks, but I can't get over boiling meat in a bag

    • Me too. That is the next issue they have to solve.

      • Anova has solved it by using a steam oven, the one that was on sale for USA fathers day, had it been on sale for our father's day I might have been able to get one

      • +2

but I can't get over boiling meat in a bag

Boiling is 100⁰C, I've never gone higher than 65⁰C for sous vide.

        • +1

Should try Sous Vide Mash. Put the butter/potato etc in the bag, cook at around 80c, smoosh bag to make mash, cut corner and pipe out.

Best mash ever as potatos aren't waterlogged.

    • +1

Yeah, it seems like a waste to me. It may be good, but I just don't feel a need to use bags if I don't have to.

      • -2

not to mention there's nothing to say plastic from bags aren't leaching chemicals (including endocrine disruptors that minmic hormones) into your food. They still sell "microwavable" plastics, even though even those leach plastic into food, and they expect me to rely on a plastic bag?

        • +1

I think you need to look for the foil hat sale in aisle 44 in bunnings.

          • @pharkurnell: They only ever have aluminium foil which acts as an antenna unlike TIN foil that stops space age technology.

        • +1

You get negged but most of what you've mentioned is actually backed up by research.

          https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32720473/

these compounds have been shown to possess endocrine disrupting properties with an ability to interfere in the actions of many hormones and to contribute to human health problems.

And that's before we even get into micro fibre plastics and other ingested sources.

          • @Telios: I know it is, but there aren't enough learned people in the world. That guy obviously hasn't heard of the fact that the anogenital distance (between the anus and the scrotum) is getting shorter in time, and that's its been linked to exposure to pthalates, and that it's considered as a feminisation of males. Nor that there's entire towns in the US that are contaminated by these chemicals, or that the manufacturer Du Pont paid US$671M to settle 3500 legal cases, they paid that money because of the "tin foil hats" brigade, not because they were made to due to the serious links between their chemical and 6 illnesses

You are not actually boiling it - you are pasteurising it. Usually the temps are well below 100C. One of the most foolproof ways to get tender steak from the cheaper cuts. Also great for slow cooking food meat and then finishing up by searing on the BBQ.

    • +1

You're missing out if you've never had 137°F ribeye

      • Or sous vide pork ribs

      • F? is this usabargain?
also 54 is where it's at, though if it's very marbled I usually go a bit higher 56-58

    • Don't get an aldi sous vide. Mine stopped holding temp after a few months. Pretty disappointing to slow cook something over 24 hours only to find it's not cooked when you take it out.

Got an Anova and had no complaints.

As for the "boiling meat in a bag" remark, that's a bit reductive. Sous vide is great at cooking things perfectly every time. You still need to sear meat afterwards.

Best things to sous vide: steak, chicken breast (far more moist than any other way of cooking), eggs (you can make amazing ramen eggs with almost jelly like yolks), ribs.

  • Had it in my cart and I just missed it.

I have both Anova and Inkbird and I have to say, other than the Anova app being better, I don't notice any difference. For the price difference, would go 100% go Inkbird.

    • +1

Seconded, I own both also and the Anova isn't better quality or anything to justify the price so don't recommend it to anyone.

    • In what way is the app better? Never used the Anova app, but use the Inkbird app every time I use my ISV-200W and never used any function other than manually setting the temp and length to my own preference.

      • I find it has better recipes, better categorisation and filtering and more user friendly. Like others have said, I don't even use the app but if that's something of value to a user, I think Anova has the upper hand.

    • +1

I don't bother with the app at all. Can set the temp and duration on the device itself… and alarm alerts you if something is wrong so app is redundant unless you are ducking out to the shops and want to keep an eye on things.

I just ordered one. It seems to be back in stock.

  • Back in stock

  • Can anyone recommend a vacuum sealer? Been using the immersion technique but noticing i get freeze burns with leftover cooks so assuming there's a leak somewhere

    • +1

I really like my inkbird vacuum sealer. rated to -80kPa as well, whereas most others I've found are only rated to -60kPa and often same price point.

Inkbird have it $45.92 with code PLSAV22

      • eBay plus only with that code.

edit: signed up for eBay plus, but the final price is $71.75
edit 2: other reports sale has ended

Check out GUGA on youtube for some Sous Vide steaks and how they come out

    • Yeah, Guga is the master of Sous Vide. I got my inkbird sous vide after watching his videos. I can do things with the sous vide I can't do with any other cooking appliance.

  • Just bought one - still in stock as of 3:45pm AEST

  • Thanks op, glad I got in to buy first and think later

  • Back in stock as of 4:17pm, got one.

  • That's a bargain.
    Purchased at 4:27.

  • Purchased at 4:28pm

  • These are great for home use, i own both and this seems like a good price. I don't remember what i paid as it was while ago from Amazon. There's not much point spending crazy money on a home use sous vide (water circulator)

  • How does this compare to the $50 Anko one (that I currently have haha). Tempted.

  • Thx op

  • Thanks, that's a banging deal. I was gutted I missed the Anko one, but this for the combo of the Sous Vide unit + the sealer is awesome.

Looking forward to trying some Tuna and Salmon in this!

  • Is the Anko one still available? I can't find it on Kmart website.

    • It's no longer available. Sold out fast and they don't seem to have restocked.

  • +2

Did the price go up? I see it at $169 and the sve20 code only takes $34 off

  • +1

Ordered this yesterday arv an it just got delivered.
That's Amazon level shipping speed, nice!

    • That's awesome, hope mine comes in early next week, fanging to get some Tuna cooking!
