I Bought a BYD Atto 3 So You Didn't Have Too. Anything You Would Like to Know About It?

I ended up buying a BYD Atto 3, partially because I wanted an EV, somewhat because I didn't want a Tesla and mostly out of spite (As per that comment, it's even complete with wankery number plate). I wanted to put my money where my mouth is and buy one of these "cHiNa CaR bAd" EV's so maybe you don't have to.

I took delivery of it from Sydney (Castle Hill BYD) and promptly drove it back to work up the F4 freeway and back to work (About 200km journey). Consumption was ok (but there is no way this car is getting anywhere near the optimistic 480km range on the highway.) and used an average of about 17kWh/100km.

I ended up getting white, because I'm a tight arse and it was $0 for white ($700 for other colours) and it is not white. It's not even "Pearl White"… it's silver. For comparison, it was sitting next to a silver Navara at the dealership (they share with Nissan) and it was more silver than the Navara.

Quick thoughts

Fit and finish: Very good. I would absolutely say it was on a par with Kia and Hyundai. Seats are really nice. Dash material, not so much. Paint is all good and no massive panel gaps or piss poor painting.

Colours: Interior colours are much more muted and acceptable compared to the original LHD one they were showing in Darlinghurt. And as above, white is not "white".

Performance: About what you would expect from a 1.6 turbo, or a 2.0+ 4 cyl. engine, just way more torque. Regen is disappointing, it's either not enough, or too much. No one pedal driving.

Features: Yep, it's got them. Every anagram you can think of, it's there somewhere. Radar cruise is good and much better than the work Outlander. Lane Keep Assist is a little intrusive, but can be turned off. Cameras are amazingly clear.

Infotainment: Yep, well, that's a hot mess. No AA/ACP, (but AA can be side loaded for now.) Radio randomly reset volume when you turn vehicle off and on again. But all in all, LOTS of features and settings and it is a very snappy display with no lag.

Climate control: It works? All done through media control.

Ride comfort: Meh. Better than my Outlander, not as good as my Fiat. Around town and over bumps and rough surface, it's good. Around fast curves, it's a whale.

Economy: On the freeway/highway, not to bad, better than expected (expected 200~250km, got about 350km) around town, excellent. On one drive, I left home at 75%, got home with 76%.

Noise: Very quiet inside. It is very well insulated. It's no BMW 7 series, but it's certainly no Hyundai Accent. The "pedestrian warning" (drone noise up to 30km/h) feels like it resonates a bit, but swapping it from standard to dynamic helped. (I want a custom pedestrian warning noise.)

Size: Bigger than a Toyota Yaris Cross, a bit smaller than an Outlander. Interior is big compared to the outside would have you believe (I borrowed neighbors cat to swing around to test.) Seats are a good size, rear leg room is massive, boot space is, "average". not small, but not huge. I am 6'2" (188cm) and my head fit well within the car with a good 80~100mm between my head and the roof.

All in all, a really solid first impression. It drives well, is built well, handles on the upper side of "ok", power is good and range is not to bad… So, if you have any questions about the car, want to know anything or want a photos of something in particular, or just want to hang it on me for buying a Chinese EV, have at it.

Remember, I early adopted here so you don't have too, and I am not some paid off shill working for an auto review site/publication, so if it is a piece of shit, I'll say it, if it has issues, I'll certainly let you know and I am not here to defend the vehicle like some fanboi. To me, it is transport, not a love story. It's a family car, so it needs to be treated like one.

Edits and additions:

Total Cost: Some have asked me about what I paid for it, In NSW, the final price was $48,405.91. This included registration but not the stamp-duty. The stamp-duty rebate was done at the dealer for me. There is also a $3,000 EV rebate as well, that one you have to apply for online, and I have applied, but have not received it. After rebate, if/when I get it, it will be a total of $45,406 drive away.

Charging: I have a wall charger ready for install, but at the moment, I am living with a 10A granny charger. From 36% to 100%, the car estimated 24 hours on the 1.6kW granny. I plugged it in over night (8pm~8am) and it went from 36% to 75%. More than enough for an average day of town/city driving.

Pics or it didn't happen: Hold my beer fam… I got this…

Safety Features: I went and covered most of it in this reply

Servicing: This can be found on the BYD Aus website and I have talked about it somewhere around here

Price: $48,405.91 ($0 stamp duty and before $3,000 NSW EV rebate. For more info, I covered it here

Insurance: $884 full comp. through Budget Direct. More info on my "stats" for this price was mentioned here

Why an EV?: Because (fropanity) petrol companies! It had nothing to do with "saving the planet"

That rear badge: It's ok, you know I got your back on this…

Observations and Updates

First OTA updates have arrived: Info here

EV Incentive rebate was approved. Applied for it 16/9 and was approved 30/9. Payment arrived about 5 days after final approval.

Update on safety rating. Vehicle received Euro NCAP 5 star rating. ANCAP rating release in NZ (5 stars) still pending in Aus.

Yes, a lot of ‘fear mongering’ by the fuel companies, the irony of it all though is a lot are now starting to put in charging points. They have no choice, move with the times or lose out.

        Thanks for your detailed response!

Cool that you mentioned to change the mentality and treating an EV like charging a phone every night.

That hits the nail on the head (for me and others!). Funny that it wasn’t really obvious until you said it! I guess it’s drummed and ingrained into us with the standard ICE routine to wait to refuel when nearly empty or 1/4 full to reduce time at the petrol stations as well as trying to maximise fuel dockets and low fuel prices when they fluctuate.

Funny that reflecting that with my family, I truly cannot remember when our iPhones had actually turn off due to low battery as the whole household charges our devices overnight…. Routinely without fail..

Also thinking about no more spending times at petrol stations - that’s more time saved as well

It will be awesome in future to see wireless / qi charging pads for EVs in household garages hehe…

No, range anxiety is not real if you are smart and plan a long trip

Absolutely. But I have 2 solutions just in case:
        - I heard there are "electric jerrycans" for around $2,000 that would charge the EV 30-50km in 30 minutes
        - Buy a long but cheap heavy duty extension lead from Bunnings. Personally, I would do this when I do get an EV. It's not hard to find a wall power socket but your EV might not reach it

  • Did you do the test drive of atto3 at castle hill?

    • +2

Nope, I said I don’t give a shit, just have my car ready so I can come down and pick it up. They went ahead and got my car ready and I test drove it on the way home.

And a slight update for people…

The first 2 OTA updates come in over the last few days…

    What has been added:

SatNav. (Not Google maps, some other brand)
    Spotify
    Verbal commands

What has been fixed: (that I have noticed)

    Some of the bad translations
The FM radio sound much better
Fixed the volume on resume going straight to 15+

    What wasn’t added/fixed:

    Some other translations
    Still no AA/ACP integration

    • How good/bad is the verbal commands at the moment?

      • Don’t know. Never used them as I only installed the updates yesterday, so I don’t know many of the commands as yet (as there is about 6 pages worth of commands)

From skimming over the list, you can control virtually anything in the car from voice commands, radio, aircon, windows, sunroof, heated seats, etc…

I’ll have more of a play with it over the next few days and see how it goes.

    • Awesome to hear they are actually fixing things with OTA updates!

Does Spotify use the car's inbuilt connectivity? Do/will you need to pay for a 'premium connectivity' subscription like Tesla?

      • +1

Apparently it works over the in car connection. There is nowhere to pay for "premium connectivity" but I have heard form people in NZ and here in AU that Spotify comes up with ads from Europe, even if you are logged into your account, it still plays ads in French and German (and some other countries)

I dont know about others, but we only get 1gb of data a month, So, with OTA updates coming down, I just dont know how much data is going to be left over for spotify to do it's thing.

    • im still waiting for my OTA updates :(…

      • I've been told to check your data allowance (Look for an app called "Data Flow" on the main screen). Some people have issues with their data allocation on their sim card. If you have 0Gb allowance, then you may not be getting the update come through.

You can try setting the vehicle to use a WiFi or mobile hotspot and forcing the update to check again over WiFi. It is not a fix, but it has worked for some people if they have a 0Gb data allowance. YMMV.

    Hi guys,

Posted the following in both the BYD and Tesla fb groups:

—> as expected, I got attacked by some telsa Karen who was triggered that I mentioned a CCP car. lol. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Ikr. The irony. 🤡 But surprisingly, the rest of the tesla owners made some interesting arguments in favour of the tesla. Mostly re: software integration, access to supercharger network and resale value.

—> in terms of the reasons of going with the atto 3, it was basically a resounding "bang for buck". Most of the ones who put down a deposit would prefer a model y but went with the BYD due to it being an established company and not wanting to break the bank.

    Here was my post:

"Entering my first foray into becoming an EVangelist. I've narrowed down my list to the MY, M3 and BYD Atto 3.

I checked out the tesla Y and model 3. I like the look & shape of the model Y. The large cargo space + frunk is certainly appealing.

Personally, the minimalistic interior is certainly more to my taste as compared to the quirky/gawdy "fitness inspired" interior of the atto3. However, the quirky interior is certainly well built and growing on me.

Tesla's software is on another level. Don't get me wrong, everything was smooth and responsive on the byd but the software integration on the tesla is just apple-esque. Was certainly frothing after my test drive in the MY. 🤣

Got to be a test pilot on the base model MY as well as the Atto3. For some reason, the MY felt much faster than the atto 3 from a stop start as well as rolling start. I much preferred the softer ride quality of the atto3. Hard acceleration would cause wheel spin on the atto3 but the traction on the MY was faultless everytime I put my foot down. (probably due to bring rwd, better wheels as well as software tuning my tesla).

Went to see the atto3 twice in the Perth BYD showroom. The staff in the Perth showroom were fantastic. They were knowledgeable, enthusiastic and helpful. Really taking the time to answer all our questions. This was in contrast to my experience with the Tesla staff. To sum it up, the vibe I got from Tesla was that they were uninterested & curt. Basically told "if you are keen you need to put down a deposit due to the long wait times" bruh… we all know that 🤦🏻‍♂️

Customer service/experience aside, the question I'm asking myself now is whether the MY ($79878) is ~30k better than the Atto3. The atto3 ($51343) and m3 ($72611 drive away) are eligible for the WA EV rebate which the MY is not.

I really like the Tesla but I was also impressed with the overall package of the BYD. (the interior is still a bit gaudy to me though)

Been an Android user my whole life and to me this is akin to like the age old Android vs Apple comparison."

Like OP I'm also taking the plunge and probably gonna go with the atto 3. I will pay for it in cash.

I plan to sell my 2018 i30 for 20k to help recoup some of the costs….

I drive 15k km a year. Mostly city driving with the odd foray into the country once or twice a year. Live in a house. No solar currently.

What do you guys think? 😁

    • +1

I think you lost me at "EVangelist" and "frunk"… :D

      • +2

Trust me bruh. I hate those terms. But I love using it cos it triggers so many people. 😂

    • Hi Slayer, just asking based on your personal circumstances if you calculated that paying cash is cheaper than novated leasing even with the GST exemption.

  • +2

Hey pegaxs, I have re-learn how a car(EV) works over the last 2 weeks and I am down to the last part which is the most important part of an EV. The battery charging!

There are some conflicting informations but because EV battery tech is advancing all the time that some old informations would be outdated. Can you confirm what you know on your BYD or in general?

    1. Tesla recommends charging their cars as often as possible. Others recommend charging when needed every second/third day. What is BYD's recommendation?
    2. Best to trickle charge through a wall power socket or home wall charger. Supercharge is not recommend unless you are on a long trip
    3. Set charging up to 80% under normal usage and 100% only before a long trip
    4. Don't drain down under 10% and best to keep it above 20%
    5. If not driven for weeks don't keep the battery at 70%-80% because the latest UK research indicates that this is the worst case scenario
    • +4

1: Charge it to 100% at least once a week. Run it down to <10% and fully charge it once every 6 months. No problem charging it to 100% because LiFePo, not LiPo.
2: Don't just DC fast charge it every time. Don't DC fast charge right after you flog the piss out of it (the car will de-rate the DC if the battery is hot anyway.) or at a high SOC (over 80%) or in cold weather.
3: Cant set to cut off at XX%, only set a time and let it stop when time says so or it hits 100% (unless your wall box supports % cut off.) There is no reason to keep the car charged up to 100% anyway. I just get into the 40's and charge it with granny charger to what ever it will cop over night. So long as it's more than what it required for the next day.
4: See note 1:. Recommended at least once every 6 months. And this next part goes for any EV. "Don't continually full cycle the battery. <10% up to +90%". Like I said above, I get into the 40%'s and plug in then or if I know I need to go somewhere in 2 or 3 days, I'll trickle charge it all the way back to 100%
5: How do you scrub the power out? Plan for it. If you are going to be overseas for 4 weeks, just drive the car around and don't charge it before you leave, BUT, it's going to give you the shits when you get back and need to drive it, but you discharged it before you went. I would store it no higher than 60%, and no lower than 40%.

If you want any more specific advice, you can consult the owner handbook and from about page 80, it covers all the information about charging and battery care. (Page 93 has most of your answers though.)

      • +1

Thanks for the reply. Pretty much covers what I needed to know.

  • Does atto 3 have rain sensing wiper, automatic retractable side mirror, blind spot monitor, heated side mirror? Just trying to compare with hybrid rav 4, number of USB port? Struggle to find a spec sheet for atto 3 on web, Lower trim rav 4 does not have automatic hatch door opener compare to atto 3.

    • +1

The brochure with all the specs is on the BYD website, just keep scrolling towards the bottom. https://bydautomotive.com.au/brochures/BYD-ATTO-3-2022.pdf

      No rain sensing wipers.

    • +1

❌ Rain sensing wipers (good, because never had a car where they worked anyway)
✅ Automatically retracting mirrors (when you lock the car)
✅ Blind Spot Monitoring (Can even trigger 3D cameras)
❓ Heated side mirrors (don’t know, don’t care.)

USB, I think 4. 2 regular ports and 2 USB-C ports as well as a wireless charging pad. One of each USB type in the front, one of each in the back.

Also note that the Atto 3 is a little smaller than a RAV4. Size wise it sits between the Yaris Cross and the RAV4.

      • +1

        From the brochure:

Electrically heated and adjustable exterior mirrors

        • Well, there you go. Next time I go for a drive, I’ll throw the thermal camera over a mirror and check it out. I didn’t see and option to turn it on or off.

          • @pegaxs: Might be linked to the rear demister. I think some cars just have the one switch which activates rear demister and side mirrors at the same time.

            • +1

@Cliche Guevara: Just saw on YT that the side mirror heating IS linked with rear demister. Can be accessed in the same menu as the seat heating (for some reason).

      • Do you use the cruise control in the highway?

        • +1

Yes. Isn't that the whole point of cruise control?? "Highway use".

I would put it on a par with the wife's Corolla Hybrid. Very smooth and readily picks up the car in front and slows down gently. Light years ahead of the terrible system they have on the Mitsubishi Outlander work had me drive around in.

          • @pegaxs: Is there a difference between active cruise control and adaptive cruise control? Was thinking about upgrading to corolla hybrid as my current corolla doesn't have cruise control.

            • @htc: I could not really tell you. It may just be the words used by every different company. I have a feeling what Toyota call "active" is what others call "adaptive". Same as their "LKA" or Lane Keep Assist. What other companies call it is something different.

          • @pegaxs:

Yes. Isn't that the whole point of cruise control?? "Highway use".

I asked a colleague about using cruise control, he said he rarely use it and the only time he remembered using it is when he drove to another regional city since as soon as he hit the brake the cruise control is disabled. Is cruise control good for motorway with no traffic lights?

  • +1

And don't forget the only car on the market with a Moof Roof.

    • Heheh.. “moof”. I hate stupid made up automotive words. I find it cringe when they make up these bullshit marketing terms, same as “frunk”.

  • Added in the OP information about the Euro NCAP getting 5 stars for all the “Chinese crap car, it will only get 3 stars at best” crowds.

ANCAP has been released for the NZ market, but not Australia because they are probably waiting to give it a 4 star rating because of the rear middle seat child seat anchor being hard to find.

  • Did you buy the faster charger from jetcharge? https://jetcharge.com.au/

    Which one did you buy?

    • +1

Nope. I bought a 22kW charger from ANZU and it is getting installed on this tuesday. I looked at a lot of other brands, and jetcharge was one of them, but their products were just way to expensive compared to what is already out there on the market.

      • Is it plug and play to install on the wall socket or does it require technical electricity knowledge to install that charger?

        • +1

It has to be installed by a licensed electrician. My unit is a 3 phase, 32amp unit. It cannot be plugged into any regular house socket.

Typical plugs for single phase in Australia are:

10A = 2400W max draw. (or about 2.4kW/h) (closer to 1.8~2kW/h draw due to losses)
          15A = 3600W max draw.
          20A = 4800W max draw.
32A = 7600W max draw. (or about 7.6kW/h) (Again, closer to about 7~7.2kW/h due to losses)

          • @pegaxs: What's the typical cost of installing it in your garage?

            • +1

@htc: Depends on the fuse box location and what amperage/phase requirements are needed, but I have seen quotes from about $1000 to about $2000 as typical install costs (excluding the charger itself)

              • @pegaxs: Maybe dumb question… But I'm getting single phase solar system installed (solaredge Genesis inverter) can I install a 3 phase charger?

                • +1

@GuniGuGu: You need 3-phase power at your premises. Most houses don't have it by default. Some houses can have it added, but you'll need to have a level-2 electrician assess your house supply to let you know. The Atto3 can only charge at 7kW AC so a single phase EVSE (charger) is all you need. There's really no benefit in going for 3-phase.

      • Does the Atto support 22kW AC charging? Seen some things about it only supporting 7kW AC, but couldn't find anything official.

        • It only supports 7kW, single phase, 32A charging. I can confirm this, as I have a 22kW, 3 phase, 32A wall charger, and the Atto 3 only pulls 7~ish kW while charging.

  • Does "adaptive" cruise control use Regen for braking?

    • Yes. A mixture of both, depends. 99% of the time, it just uses regen or off throttle to slow down. If I come up on a car that is say way under the speed limit, it will use regen a lot more.

  • Does the wireless android auto work or does it require a USB?

    • Doesn't have AA or ACP… "yet". Will be wireless AA when it is released. Unsure of ACP.

  • Is the $3000 ev rebate once per person per year? If I sell the current ev vehicle and buy a new EV, is it eligible for another rebate?

  • Is the ev rebate not applicable to novated lease?

  • Did you get the VtoL adaptor and if so what is in it? Have you measured the resistor values?

    • Yes, I got the adaptor. It’s basically a 4 outlet power board with a Type 2 connector.

And why would I measure the resister values? Hell, the thing is still wrapped in its original bubble wrap, so I don’t even know how it works, let alone taken any readings from it.

I do know that there was an electrical engineer on one of the Fartbook pages that messed around with it and did full load tests and peak draw tests and pulled it all apart to get all that kind of information. If I can find the link, it might be better reading his analysis, as that kind of stuff is well above my pay grade.

      • I kind of want the NZ VtoL adapter with the on/off switch and better safety features.

  • @pegaxs Are your indicators on the left or right of the steering wheel? I drove an MG ZS EV and they were on the left which took some getting used to. I haven’t test driven an Atto but was curious to know what side the indicator stalk is. Thanks!

    • +1

They're on the 'correct' side for Australia - on the right.

    • +1

As Cliche says, in the Atto 3, they are on the normal side you would expect for an Australian car (right side of steering column.)

  • A question about wireless connectivity: do you have to install and use a SIM card (and associated mobile plan), or can you just occasionally connect to a home network via wifi to check for OTA updates ?

    • Vehicle comes with it’s own SIM, you cannot change it (don’t even know where it is located in the car). If you change the SIM yourself, it won’t work, because it has to be registered with BYD. You get 1Gb per month and apparently Spotify does not count towards your data allocation. In the last 29 days, I have used 6Mb.

You can also use your phone as a hot spot or connect your car to your home WiFi network to get updates.

  • Hi,

i went for test drive when the weather was 33c outside.

Found the airconditioner was not blowing cold air,
ask the sales person to check with another car, same issue here.

been told that this is due to ev car, hence ac wont be as cold as the normal car would, in order to save energy.

Would any of you have the same problem here?

    • I took one for a test drive and felt the same. It was sunny maybe 30 ish temps. Ac was blasting and not in the power saving mode, normally after 30mins blasting the vents to your body, it would get uncomfortably cold. Never felt that with the atto, it wasn't hot but it wasn't super cold like my 2004 escape.

    • Don’t know. My a/c works flawlessly. So much so that on the coldest setting, I quite often have to turn it off because it gets too cold.

I will say though that it works much better while driving than it does just sitting in a car park or in a dealership forecourt.

  • That seems like the wrong information for the sales rep to give a prospective buyer. It may be true that the a/c is not very cold but that should either be able to be changed in some onboard setting or improved with an OTA update. I'd like to think the driver of the car can decide if they want to reduce range by having better a/c. There's 60 kWh to play with… If BYD want to sell their cars in Oz then it must have good a/c.

    • Yes,

thats what ive been told to by the sales rep.

As i check on 2 car, and they both has the same issue.

On the first 30 minutes test drive, the aircon was on the max fan and coldness setting.

i actually like the car, however cant imagine if i have to deal with this on hot melbourne summer.

at above 30c, the car would be uncomfortable.
As need to put the aircon on high fan, which would be noisy.

      • Kind of agree - I have both a gen2 Prius (electric A/C) and the Atto3.
The A/C seems far stronger on the Prius.

Currently I set the A/C to max cool for the first 2-3mins of driving, then set it down to like 20degrees but minimum fan to keep cabin decent temp while driving (keeping the fan to minimum to minimise noise)

Fundamentally a normal aircon is a heatpump anyway, so it just be down to BYD using a smaller capacity AC unit.

  • @BeNice , any mods or accessories you've bought so far?

Only things I've bought so far are mats from Rubber Tree.

    • Hi alex

after the test drive, i decided to not purchase the car due to the aircon issue.

      so didnt buy anything yet.

  • +2

Price rise coming for all new orders of the ATTO3. Existing orders will be honoured at their original price. Looks to be about $3600 more (for the extended range)…

  • +1

Spotted my first BYD in the wild this arvo. Was larger than I expected.

You stuck in traffic at Hexham sarvo peggi?

    • If it was a white one, there is every possibility it was me. I was down in newie around that time.

  • +1

Would love an update… curious to know how you’re finding it :)

Been a bit slack lately and left this thread alone for a bit because it wasn’t getting any replies.

Anyway, a quick update, I’ve had the car for about 3 months now and the one thing I can say is that I really hate driving other cars now. This car is as good as the day I bought it and picked it up. It has a few quirks that are software/update issues, but they are not car breaking things.

The “Batman” tyres everyone freaked out about are fine, they work well and seem ok to me.

Learning how to deal with range is getting better with time. I’m usually getting down to about 30~40% battery before I recharge and I’m getting 300+km out of it without any issue with plenty to spare (70% around town, 30% highway)

There are no body creaks or groans. Interior is holding up nicely. No dash or trim rattles.

Some people have complained that they test drive the car and the a/c wasn’t cold, I’ve never had that issue. On its lowest setting, even when it is 30+ outside, it is freezing. So much so that I’ve had to turn it off to warm back up.

It gets charged about once per week, usually on days that the solar is making power, or overnight when it’s off-peak power. Not had any issue with charging at home. Never charged anywhere else because it’s either a busted charger or the parking bay has been ICE’d.

I am really having a hard time trying to think of things I don’t like about it as a car. There is nothing I can really point out and say “this is rubbish” or “I hate that…” It’s a good, solid car to drive, handles well, plenty of grunt from the lights and on the highway. I can’t say I can see other EV’s on the market being worth the extra $20~30,000 price tag over this vehicle.

  • Does anyone know how to install apps to Atto 3?

    • Apparently you can sideload them from your phone.

      • Thanks!

        • Also note that some people are complaining that after they have updated to the latest firmware version for the vehicle, that the access to turn on debugging has been disabled.

Like anything, your mileage may vary.

  • Can you kick under the boot to open it?

    • +2

No. There's a button, but it is a powered tailgate.

    • Like Cliche said, but also add that there is a button on the remote to open the boot.

  • How did you remove the rear badge? DIY?

Also with the recent price increase, do you think it's still worth getting this car?

    • How much more that they increased to?

      • Both increased by $3600 if im not mistaken.

    • Removed batch with DIY elbow grease, heat gun, some adhesive remover, isopropyl alcohol and some polish.

  • Have now seen 3 or 4 in the wild. One blue, one silver and white twice - could be the same one, but far enough apart that could be different.

      Welcome to the club :D

I keep seeing them all over the place now!
I think they look quite nice from the outside.
    Love the exterior lighting design

Yeah, I was way up the Hunter Valley the other day and saw a Blue one parked in Singleton. So, it's good to see them out randomly and also out in country areas.

Look forward to receiving mine, still 3-4 months away though!

Hey mate, any more updates on how the car is going and your thoughts?

I'm thinking of ordering one and would to hear more of your thoughts on ownership.

Thanks for the detailed post also.

      per @Andyz
      Has it short circuited yet?
      .

      • +5

Hahaha… No. No short circuiting… "yet".

Just did a run over the weekend for CNY down to Sydney and back. A shade over 500km and it was all flawless. No issues. Had to recharge while I was there. Got down to 30%, so threw some electrons in for free at a public charger at a shopping center. 20% in 2 hours. Before I went home, went to give it it's first try on a DC fast charger. Charged at 47~48kW. Went from 40% to 80% in about 15~20mins. Slowed down after 80 to 98% to about 30kW.

I still have the original "Batman" tyres on the car because… why not. I wanted to test the car out as stock as I can and cant see the problem with the tyres other than the same "if it inst a brand I know, I'm scared of it and must be angry about it" attitude people have. The tyres grip just fine and no problems.

Performance is good. They are a little bit stealthy when it comes to performance. In the Sydney traffic, it's quite easy to just step on it and gap traffic without an issue. On the highway, you can just do the same when you need to overtake or get into a lane with faster moving traffic and just know that the torque to get you up to sped is just there, on tap. There is no, "I'll just drop it back a gear" or "i'll just get a wind up…" It just has torque on tap.

Comfort wise, it's great. I can easily sit in it and drive for 3 hours no problem. It still blows me away at how quite it is. Some of the forums have people whining about the wind noise over the mirrors, but i think it's a non-thing. It isnt that loud and I think the only reason you do notice it is because there is no ICE and gearbox droning out all of these noises. It's nice to have a car where I can talk to my family and not have to feel like I am shouting over the car.

Issues: None really. I keep an eye on the forums for what other people are experiencing and most of it seems to be pedantic stuff. Nothing major. The cars operating system needs deleting and starting again. That part is woeful. Just lots of little bugs and errors.

Still no AA, but ACP has been added. The OTA update is inconsistent. I know of people who have had the new OTA update since 4/1/23. Here it is, the 25/1 and my OTA update is still non-existent. AA has been pushed back until April. So, that is shit form considering the vehicle runs on Android.

The only issues I have is probably sub-par AC performance. I dont know if it is a system size thing, but on the highway and when the car is moving, it is fine. If you get back in the car after it is parked, it takes a long time to cool down. As an AC tech, to me it just sounded like it needed a regas and I have confirmed with a few other people that they have had theirs checked and regassed and the AC now works fine, so that's listed to do on the first service.

Other than that, the car is fantastic. Very happy with it. It runs smooth and quiet, lots of power. Charging it up took some getting used too, but I pretty much have that sorted as well now. It has some niggles that are not deal breakers (for me anyway, some people want to enact lemon laws over the stupidist shit though.)

I do get the odd "What car is that??" questions and when I tell them it is a BYD, the next questions is always "Yeah, but who makes it??" (like Toyota, Ford or GM are the only car makers on the planet.) and when I tell them, it's always the same reply… "Oh, you do know that cHiNa CaR bAd!!1!!1" and how it's a brand new brand that will be gone in a year. I just say No, BYD have been making cars for about 20 years, are the second largest battery manufacturer in the world and are currently the top selling EV manufacturer in China. Just because you have not heard of them, doesn't make them A: shit, B: new.

Would I recommend one… Sure. I love mine… but I will make one caveat, it is like buying beta components. It works, and 99% of the time, it's great, but there are bugs, be it with the car software or the Australian importer (EV Direct). It's not perfect, but it's a really good start. It can only really get better from here and if this is their start, then it's pretty good. I think they have looked at other Chinese car companies trying to get foot holds here and learned from those mistakes. It needs to be a safe, good looking and good value for money offering before it will be taken seriously.

If you dont mind a few minor things (and I mean minor, like insignificant minor) and you are happy to be an early adopter, have at it. If you only like a 100%, polished experience, then maybe wait another 12 months and see how all the bugs are being ironed out.

        • thanks for the update, good to hear you are having a positive experience
          .

        • Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it.

I took one for a test drive and didn't mind it at all. However, with the AC and living in SA, its a big requirement here. I'm still not quite convinced it will get me through summer and that's the only thing stopping me. Do you think it really would be as a simple as getting it regassed?

The BYD person told me to come have another test drive this Friday when the temp is 37, i might take him up on it and see how well it performs.

I'm losing my work car in the next few months and really like the idea of getting an EV. My other option would to be buy a little run around for now, and hope for an update aircon fix?

        • Glad you're enjoying yours.

A mate has one and has the weak AC issue, and to him it is overall a meh car. But he claims he's not a car guy.

Defo the best value for money EV out there.

        • @pegaxs how's the A/C during high 38+C temp?

          • @alteclan: Absolute rubbish. It failed. it was 38 degrees outside and the coldest the AC got down too was 20 degrees at the vent.

Took it to work yesterday and hooked the AC gauges up to it and it almost has no gas in it. Dont know if it is a leak or if it is just low gas from the factory. Im not going to touch it because "warranty" and I dont know what oil they have used and I'm not spending my money on leak test dye, oil and/or gas.

Have been in touch with a few owners I know around the valley and asked them about their experience, and it was 50:50. Some said theirs was freezing cold AC, no issues, others have said the same thing, AC just blows cool air, not cold air.

It's due for it's first service in a month or so, so it will just get added to the list for things that need to be looked at.
