I Bought a BYD Atto 3 So You Didn't Have Too. Anything You Would Like to Know About It?

I ended up buying a BYD Atto 3, partially because I wanted an EV, somewhat because I didn't want a Tesla and mostly out of spite (As per that comment, it's even complete with wankery number plate). I wanted to put my money where my mouth is and buy one of these "cHiNa CaR bAd" EV's so maybe you don't have to.

I took delivery of it from Sydney (Castle Hill BYD) and promptly drove it back to work up the F4 freeway and back to work (About 200km journey). Consumption was ok (but there is no way this car is getting anywhere near the optimistic 480km range on the highway.) and used an average of about 17kWh/100km.

I ended up getting white, because I'm a tight arse and it was $0 for white ($700 for other colours) and it is not white. It's not even "Pearl White"… it's silver. For comparison, it was sitting next to a silver Navara at the dealership (they share with Nissan) and it was more silver than the Navara.

Quick thoughts

Fit and finish: Very good. I would absolutely say it was on a par with Kia and Hyundai. Seats are really nice. Dash material, not so much. Paint is all good and no massive panel gaps or piss poor painting.

Colours: Interior colours are much more muted and acceptable compared to the original LHD one they were showing in Darlinghurt. And as above, white is not "white".

Performance: About what you would expect from a 1.6 turbo, or a 2.0+ 4 cyl. engine, just way more torque. Regen is disappointing, it's either not enough, or too much. No one pedal driving.

Features: Yep, it's got them. Every anagram you can think of, it's there somewhere. Radar cruise is good and much better than the work Outlander. Lane Keep Assist is a little intrusive, but can be turned off. Cameras are amazingly clear.

Infotainment: Yep, well, that's a hot mess. No AA/ACP, (but AA can be side loaded for now.) Radio randomly reset volume when you turn vehicle off and on again. But all in all, LOTS of features and settings and it is a very snappy display with no lag.

Climate control: It works? All done through media control.

Ride comfort: Meh. Better than my Outlander, not as good as my Fiat. Around town and over bumps and rough surface, it's good. Around fast curves, it's a whale.

Economy: On the freeway/highway, not to bad, better than expected (expected 200~250km, got about 350km) around town, excellent. On one drive, I left home at 75%, got home with 76%.

Noise: Very quiet inside. It is very well insulated. It's no BMW 7 series, but it's certainly no Hyundai Accent. The "pedestrian warning" (drone noise up to 30km/h) feels like it resonates a bit, but swapping it from standard to dynamic helped. (I want a custom pedestrian warning noise.)

Size: Bigger than a Toyota Yaris Cross, a bit smaller than an Outlander. Interior is big compared to the outside would have you believe (I borrowed neighbors cat to swing around to test.) Seats are a good size, rear leg room is massive, boot space is, "average". not small, but not huge. I am 6'2" (188cm) and my head fit well within the car with a good 80~100mm between my head and the roof.

All in all, a really solid first impression. It drives well, is built well, handles on the upper side of "ok", power is good and range is not to bad… So, if you have any questions about the car, want to know anything or want a photos of something in particular, or just want to hang it on me for buying a Chinese EV, have at it.

Remember, I early adopted here so you don't have too, and I am not some paid off shill working for an auto review site/publication, so if it is a piece of shit, I'll say it, if it has issues, I'll certainly let you know and I am not here to defend the vehicle like some fanboi. To me, it is transport, not a love story. It's a family car, so it needs to be treated like one.

Edits and additions:

Total Cost: Some have asked me about what I paid for it, In NSW, the final price was $48,405.91. This included registration but not the stamp-duty. The stamp-duty rebate was done at the dealer for me. There is also a $3,000 EV rebate as well, that one you have to apply for online, and I have applied, but have not received it. After rebate, if/when I get it, it will be a total of $45,406 drive away.

Charging: I have a wall charger ready for install, but at the moment, I am living with a 10A granny charger. From 36% to 100%, the car estimated 24 hours on the 1.6kW granny. I plugged it in over night (8pm~8am) and it went from 36% to 75%. More than enough for an average day of town/city driving.

Pics or it didn't happen: Hold my beer fam… I got this…

Safety Features: I went and covered most of it in this reply

Servicing: This can be found on the BYD Aus website and I have talked about it somewhere around here

Price: $48,405.91 ($0 stamp duty and before $3,000 NSW EV rebate. For more info, I covered it here

Insurance: $884 full comp. through Budget Direct. More info on my "stats" for this price was mentioned here

Why an EV?: Because (fropanity) petrol companies! It had nothing to do with "saving the planet"

That rear badge: It's ok, you know I got your back on this…

Observations and Updates

First OTA updates have arrived: Info here

EV Incentive rebate was approved. Applied for it 16/9 and was approved 30/9. Payment arrived about 5 days after final approval.

Update on safety rating. Vehicle received Euro NCAP 5 star rating. ANCAP rating release in NZ (5 stars) still pending in Aus.

Comments

    • Dropped today. Got mine updated at 9am this morning… only issues I have found so far is that Spotify is flakey as. Works fine from phone, works fine from Atto’s desktop app, just not for, wireless AA. Maybe a setting?

      • Need to unpair your phone and re-pair bluetooth for the AA to work properly.

        • Yeah, that was the first thing I did because AA wouldn't work at all. Came up with some error about not compatible… I deleted all bluetooth devices and re-added just my main phone… I dont know if it is a wireless AA issue or a BYD implementation of it that is buggy.

          • @pegaxs: Email that said there was a new OTA update said:
            * Improved user experience, with enhanced driving comfort
            * Synchronised functions of Bluetooth phone contacts
            * Enhanced Apple Car play function
            * Enhanced FM radio experience
            * Improved sunroof functionality

I wonder what points 1 and 5 are specifically. Not a fan of the sunroof buttons given how long I have to hold them but I just use the voice command anyways.

            • @CloudZero: Some people, myself included, had issues with the sunshade/sunroof? not closing after it opens. I fixed it with a system reset, but perhaps the 'bug' that caused it has been fixed. Some of these so-called 'improved' and 'enhanced' functionality are actually just fixes to intermittent issues, rather than actually being new or better functions.

            • @CloudZero: 1: AKA: "marketing bullshit". Maybe the addition of more ISA settings? (ISA = Intelligent Speed Adaption)
5: As Cliche said, some people were having sunshade issues where it would go into a state that required re-calibration almost every time they used it. It never bothered me because I dont open my sunroof or sunshade.

2: Bluetooth contacts I never noted an issue, but then again, I dont have any friends to sync their number over :D
3: There were bugs with the ACP interface… aparently it's now worse (resolution has been lowered) and still no wireless ACP
4: FM Radio… dont know this one either. Initial cars it was terrible. the last update improved it but it was still a bit random when it came on, or would sometimes overide your Spotify player.

  • Hey mate, thanks for this thread. I'm taking one for a test drive next week.
How are things going with it so far?

  • Any thoughts on if you could install a larger/higher quality AGM battery? All the pics I've seen of the engine bay has the battery covered up so hard to really tell how its secured in there.

Car audio guy who just recently bought an expensive AGM battery for my sound system about two months before my car was totaled by a drunk driver so once I work out how everthing works I'll certainly be replacing some speakers…adding amps ect ect..

Just ordered a blue ER one today as they are now basically in stock at Dandenong now in Victoria so should have one soon.

  • +2

MG4 51kWh announced at $38,990 plus on-road costs. Really surprised me for being about $3k cheaper than I expected. Will definitely be getting one with whatever colour that is free of charge (white or blue in the UK is free)! Perfect car for the city commute especially if you can get cheap/free electricity charges.

    • White is the free one… though only $700 for a colour so not as bad as others cough Tesla cough

      • +1

$700 best kept in my pocket. I suspect we might end up getting a red…just to nudge the missus over the line in getting it.

        • +1

The red is really nice on MGs (have a red ZSEV coming)

    • BYD Dolphin details and price will be released on Thursday (22nd). Price is likely to be similar for the lowest spec version. The main comparisons will be drivetrain/power (Dolphin is FWD and will have an anaemic 70 kW motor), styling (completely subjective), tech (Dolphin likely to be better - Atto3 is better than ZSEV) and battery (BYD LFP 'blade' battery likely superior to whatever LFP MG is using).

      • BYD promised to deliver the Dolphin as the lowest priced EV in Australia so we can expect $37k-$38k? The design reminded me so much of Honda Fit which is not my cup of tea. I won't mind getting the seal or the up and coming Song Plus EV 2024 though. But they are in a completely different league to the MG4.

      • I personally prefer the ZSEV to the Atto- the Atto felt heavy to me. The Dolphin with a 12 second take off sounds like it'd be a bit of a whale. I don't believe anyone needs 0-60 in 3 seconds, but my Prius does 10.4 and it feels like a fridge on takeoff, so I'd be iffy about the Dolphin.

Most MG4 owners in the UK are happy with them, so I guess YMMV

        • Seriously 0-100 12 seconds? Why would they do that? So that it has a much longer range?

          • +1

@DarkOz: That's the base model Dolphin with 70kw motor, there is another model with 150kw motor (same as Atto 3), which will do 0-100 in 7s.

            • @assailantsky: Now that made more sense but who would want a 70kw motor that does 12s 0-100? Unless it's priced it like $30k but I still wouldn't want it.

          • @DarkOz: No, so they can get in a "cheapest" price point.

  • BYD Dolphin price released today. $100 cheaper than MG4 standard version. So price is out of question.

  • Hi

Just want check if the sunroof comes tinted, when you pick up the car?

    • No, not tinted like privacy glass. Get IR blocking ceramic tint.

    • No need for tint on the sunroof, it blocks out 96% of IR and 97% of UV already. Contrary to the OzB spirit, why would you spend more money blocking out 80-90% of the 4% IR thats transmitted thru the glass? If you want more protection, close the blind.

That said, it is worth getting a good ceramic tint on the side windows as they are not that great for UV nor IR protection. The BlackArmor ceramic tint on my car makes a huge difference to IR blocking. Cost me only $300 from Sungard in Moorebank NSW for side and rear windows.

      • Do you find it hard to see through the rear view mirror at night? I've been trying to figure out if there's a way to turn off the automatic anti-glare feature since it gets pretty difficult to see other cars after I got it tinted.

        • You can unplug it or pull the fuse. Possibly a future OTA update might provide a way to do it through the infotainment system.

  • Is it worth getting the ceramic tint for the windows, seat protection coat, and external paint protection coat/spray done through the dealer or it's best getting it done through a 3rd party? Any idea what this costs both through the dealer and when done externally through a 3rd party?

    • I didn't get any of these (ZSEV not an Atto), but apparently there is a long backlog on a lot of the places dealers are using to get the tints etc done, so it may add a lot to the wait time.

You have also reminded me that I should probably Scotchguard my seats

      • Is the Scotchgard really worth it? Considering it's vegan or pu leather.

        • I got the Excite ZSEV, so it's fabric :)

  • My partner is 6.1" / 185 cms tall and large frame and I'm wondering if any tall drivers who own the atto3 can give their opinion on their experience with seating, leg space etc. BTW, we have done the test drive and sales person rushed through it since the test rides were all booked up. Another thing noticed was my partner head was almost brushing the sunroof blind.

    • I've driven my grandpa's BYD a couple of times and I'm 6 foot 3 and fit without brushing the sunroof
      Maybe I sit more reclined

      • Is pegaxs your grandfather?

        • I'll have to ask him next time I see him

    • 185 cms is fine. Still got a bit more room for the head and legs.

  • -1

Seems like the transfer oil BYD says you have to use in a service is not available in Australia even from dealers. https:// vt.tiktok. com/ZSLaSPo6d/

(No idea why the comment is blocked with this link)

  • Been in the market for 7 seater for sometime now. Weighing up my options. Seems like sticking with reliable trusty Toyota ICE vehicles is a good idea for now. No one enjoys paying fuel when there could be cheaper EV option. But looks like getting 7 seater Chinese brand isn't great idea after all in my case. Also not willing to fork out top $$$ on brand new ICE vehicle. So used ICE is only option. Waiting for prices to go down further. What's your thoughts..??

  • Has anyone used any of the wireless CarPlay adapters successfully and can recommend which one to get? I am leaning towards the carlinkit 5.0 and if there is any feedback on this with the atto 3? Thanks everyone.

  • Hey OP. Has BYD given you sentry mode yet while parked?

    • +1

      Not currently available.

      • When you mean currently not available that mean BYD will update their software to enable sentry mode later in the future?

        • It's possible. The car has 360° cameras and a front facing 'dashcam'. The car also gets OTA updates. So putting those things together means there's a possibility of 'sentry mode'.

          • @Cliche Guevara: While possible at this stage, I would just like them to get at least the rear camera recording while driving instead of just the front.

My impression based on comments in other threads is the recording camera is on a different system to the 360 cameras. Front DVR cam actually appears as a cam in Android while the 360 ones are only available through their dedicated app.

  • Hi OP and current Atto owners! Thinking of purchasing one but wanting to hear your thoughts about thr car after almost a year of owning one. Also got a few questions about owning the car.
    - does the headlights turn off automatically when the car turns off?
    - can anyone recommend an aftermarket frunk?
    - does wireless AA work well?

    Thanks!

    • +1

Yes, headlights turn off when car turns off. BUT the DRL's cannot be turned off if car is powered on - so it's an issue if you go the drive-in movies. Might be an option in a future OTA update, as Chinese market vehicles have this option.

Join the FB groups to see frunk options - I got mine from bydstore.online

AA is wireless and works ok but ACP is wired (also expected to be updated at some stage).

  • +1

How's your experience so far after 1 year owning it? Any annoyances or issues you've had? When BYD updates the interior, and provided all black edition, we'd consider it, otherwise will have to settle with Model Y.

    • +5

1 year… good. Happy with it so far.

The biggest hurdle was the software update res breaking shit in the car there for a while. They updated it and the AC would fog the car while it was parked, then an update came out that stopped that, but made the car fog while you drove instead. For about 3 or so months the software updates were balls. Absolutely shocking.

Outside thst, one thing I can tell you is that I stopped noticing what fuel prices were. Just don’t give a (fropanity). I put fuel in my motorcycles about once a month and that’s about it. Once you get in the rhythm of how an EV fuels up, I can’t understand the fascination with going to a fuel station to fill up. It pisses me off if I’m honest when I have to do it for one of the work vehicles.

Other than that, it’s great. Build quality is fine. No rattles, creaks, sun dried seals or wheels falling off. I would absolutely put this right up there in terms of quality with the likes of Kia and Hyundai.

And yes, the one thing I don’t like about it is the light interior colour of the seats. The cream colour on the seat base see,s to have absorbed the blue dye out of my blue work pants and jeans to be this off bpcream blue colour. It cleans off ok with some wet wipes, but it’s just ordinary. That’s probably my only gripe with it.

Mostly charge it with my solar system or on off peak while I’m sleeping, or I use the local free AC chargers when I go shopping. It is a very very cheap car to run. I think only once I had to charge at home on “shoulder” rates, and it was still only about $8 to $10 to charge it.

I was expecting a lot worse after 12 months, but have been very surprised at just how good it is. I usually churn cars every 3 or so years, but if this thing keeps at this path, I think I’m going to have it for a long time yet.

      • Thanks for sharing. We plan to switch to EV next year or two, hopefully more choice by then or if not Atto comes in all black or dark interior ;)!

        • +3

Buy some seat covers. Dont let the colour of some seats deter you from buying a car, and that goes for any car. Look at a vehicle as a whole experience. It's like writing off a whole restaurant because you didn't like the pattern on the plates.

And I highly doubt that they will offer different interior trim colours in the next few years. Maybe wait for an updated model to come out, but they really need a massive turn over to be able to start offering people customisation options.

          • @pegaxs: 2024 update is already released and for sale in China, so expect next year's Atto 3 to have a different interior colour - mica grey/white with orange highlights and black door strings. https://www.dongchedi.com/series-5248/images/kj-93466-x-27

The update also included new ventilated seats, which would be helpful for the Australian summer.

            • @assailantsky: The Tachyon edition (in NZ - https://ebbettbyd.nz/tachyon/) comes with black seats. Other editions in China already have a light coloured trim (roof lining) rather than the black we got. So I think it's very possible other options will be available in the future, in Australia. We only got the one trim version initially because EV Direct wanted the simplest (and cheapest) way to get the most cars here fast.

              • @Cliche Guevara: Dolphin comes in various colours, see absolutely no reason they offer a new color trim to appeal more buyers.

That analogy totally doesn’t make sense to me, can always switch to a different restaurant in a blink of an eye. Car? Not so much, switchover costs are just too much especially for a 50k car. You REALLY want to like it as you will live in it every single day.

  • I am based in Gold Coast and I am planning to buy this Atto 3. I do 200KM travelling everyday home to work. I did the test driving and quiet a nice car although some colorful interior. The few things holding me back from buying it are:

    i) the reliability of car itself and servicing and responsiveness of the dealership when things go west while driving. The reliability of car in a sense that it is just 1st generation car in Australia. Should we jump straight in to it.

ii) I have been reading that the tyres do no perform very well in wet roads which makes me a little worry while driving in highways. I spent 80% of the traveling in highways.

How has been your experience so far with this ?

We see the petrol car ( 5 seaters) at the price as low as 38K ( kia sportage), outlander basic version and Nissan xtrail basic version around 43Kish.
I do not know how I can justify myself to not buy these cheaper cars but to go with Atto 3.

The main reason of going to Atto 3 for me is commute cost. for 200 KM and 2-3 times a week, it costs me around 50-60$ in my current car while using 91 petrol. Thanks

    • Atto is pretty well equipped. 360 cameras lots of active safety.
Qld you should have the massive ev subsidy?

20kw per 100km of highway driving maybe. You will probably save on running costs unless you have ridiculous power prices.

Majority of owners seem to be pretty happy. Look on Whirlpool. Long term reliability have to hope… Warranty is long but has some exclusioms

    • There is currently a $6k rebate on the Atto 3 in QLD.
So that brings the Extended Range down to $47k drive away. ( I wouldn't even consider the Standard Range for your kms while highway driving).
The over options is with a novated lease.

Please note the BYD Atto 3 is actually in a smaller SUV class to the Sportage & Nissan Xtrail.
There BYD interior is more premium than the Sportage and Xtrail at the prices you quoted.

If you can charge at home the fuel savings are pretty significant, and you will need to get another charger than the one included for your highway kilometres

  • I took a test drive today and AC felt meh. It was 31 degrees outside and wife and I were sweating with max (LO) AC and fan set to 7. It did get better after 15 mins of driving but nowhere near what our existing car can do.
I read that AC is kinda terrible on this car. Has there been any improvement OP?

    • Lower the fan speed. Works better at cooling with fan at 4 or 5. Mine can provide ~7° C at the vents after ~5 mins. If it's not working as expected it's a warranty fix.

      • @Cliche Guevara Yours sounds like it's working fine. I am told there is a comfort v/s eco mode for aircon and I intend to give it another test drive next week (I didn't know which mode was it on). Like the car otherwise, aircon is the only thing that bugged me.

        • Yesterday it was 31 degree for us too but AC is absolutely fine. We do have the fullsize car shade for rear windows because that's where my wife and daughter sit and they tend to sleep on long drive (was 1 hour drive each way yesterday). Don't forget you can remotely turn on AC on the car too via the phone App or the key. Does sound like yours wasn't working as intended as for ours it's usually 5 mins to get cool on a hot day, with the car parked out in the full sun before we get on.

Is not as good as Toyota though.

      • It makes sense the faster you blow the air past the cooling fins, the less time it has to cool. Also makes the condenser work harder.

  • Just had the 1.7(?) update, and the UFO pedestrian warning sound has gone!

    • +2

Yes, and you can now turn it on/off in the software.

  • Best videos of the Atto 3 now available

Tear down and re-purposing of a battery pack from a written off locally delivered car

Part 1 and currently up to Part 6 with more to come

  • Spotted an Atto today with DRLs lit up in red. What a stupid thing to do, make it look like back of the car is headed towards you.

Please tell me this isn’t an easy thing to do in the settings!

    • Will be aftermarket or tint strips. You cannot change the colour of the DRL. A new improvement in the latest OTA software update is the ability to turn off the DRL while the car is On but in Park. They will automatically come on when you shift into D. Previously DRL were always on when the car was On which was potentially an issue when DC charging at night near private areas or say, at a Drive-in movie venue.

      • Just occurred to me that maybe it’s a feature popular in China etc where the rules are less stringent.

You get bonus stupid points if it’s an aftermarket thing you have to make an effort for.

I noticed the DRLs on my car don’t come on until the door is closed even after you start the car (with door open)

  • I saw you said that there isn't a camp mode but the car can be turned on with the a/c running. How much battery is consumed in this mode and is there much noise which would affect sleep? Thank you

    • A/C can use up to 3kW when going full blast and the compressor is very noisy. But if you just set fan speed to 1 and set an appropriate temperature (not in Auto mode) then you can probably sleep ok. There's also a fan-only mode which turns off the A/C.
