If anyone else is confused as to what this is, it's a record player head (I think)

    • To be fair, anyone interested already knows or can work it out by looking at it:-p The haitch in the " phono" doesn't suggest the O.P. hands are shaky…

I clicked into the post just to see what it was - stylus makes me think of a tablet, cartridge makes me think of a printer or gaming console.

Dropped the comment for anyone else like me who came in and wasn't sure.

    • Apologies if the description wasn't clear. I'll edit it now.

      • Deal is over, back to $171.17

I am with you! I had to log into the post to find out what it was lol.

    • The only reason I clicked on the link was because I had the question you just answered.

Does anyone know how this would compare to an Ortofon 2M Red or a 2M Blue?

    • +2

The red would track a little lighter but AT claim a higher ultrasonic range if you subscribe to the "propagation" hypothesis for frequencies you haven't heard since you were six. IMHO they're both better than most of the trash seen on cheap cutting lathes, and about as good as you can get without going to moving coil.

It's a toss up for me whether the higher output compensates for having to shove another noise source between my turntable and my MC cartridge so the [unswitchable] MM phono [47K] input on my modern amp is useable for my turntable.

    • Here is a review of this cartridge, though he did not compare it to the Ortofon 2m Red/Blue directly, he did do some comparison with other cartridges along with a sound test.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq7n3_CHU5c

      • Poor review, but the two he recommends instead are $200-300 each so while that’s the level this one competes at normally, it would be hard to beat at $76

    • I think for the money you can't go wrong.
Ortofon red and blue aren't overly great.
I'd be spending a little more and getting a Denon DL 301r but that's an MC. But permitting MC over MM this is a fantastic cart and will whop both the Ortofon carts.

As mentioned the AT is great value and hard to go wrong.

    • I really liked the Red when I owned one, I'll probably get one again at some point.

  • Would this sound particularly different/better compared to the stock stylus of an Audio Technica AT-LP60X?

    • +1

I don't think your turntable has a removable headshell which usually suggests the cartridge is fixed rather than mounted.

      • Ah, I think you're right. Looks quite different. Lucky I thought to ask before impulse buying.

Hmm - checking, it seems that this is an "Amazon Prime" offer - as I noticed when i tried declining that but noticed my trial " had started" when I went to checkout. It's not a club I can be bothered with yet however that shouldn't worry many.

  • Got this yesterday at $80 and arrived today. Super buy! Annoyed it went lower 😂

    • Awesome, have you set it up yet?

      • A tomorrow job

      • Have set it up and sounds brilliant. Upgraded from a late 80s OEM Pioneer job so you’d expect that. My downstairs turntable has a Shure m97 and this is in the same league. I can see that some might whinge that it’s not as detailed as a $2000 cartridge but this is a huge step up and qualifies this for bargain of the year. On top of that the issues I was having with balancing the tone arm with the old one seem to have disappeared (but that could be a me thing, not a cartridge thing).

  • Would it fit a LAB-1100 ? Is it worth swapping my ATN3600L ?

    • +1

I'm not aware of this TT but I swapped out my stock 3600 for the AT VM520EB.

  • Worthwhile upgrade to an AT-LP120X?

  • +1

OP here, this was my first post so apologies if there's any incorrect info / formatting. Thanks for all the comments and input so far.

I bought this cartridge about a year ago, replacing a stock AT3600 on a Yamaha TTS303. I picked it up half price from a local Melb seller and I've been pretty happy with it although I'm not sure if I'd pay full price for it. I also had the Ortofon 2M Red with a project TT that I think sounded better but "better" is very subjective and I'm no audiophile but it did sound a little warmer compared to the VM520EB though. The 2M Red does cost about $100 more than this deal.

There's not a lot of info on this cartridge and I went back to Amazon to read over some additional reviews and noticed it was on sale, I don't need to replace my stylus yet but I bought it again anyway because it's a great deal.

  • There are self-propelled ones, better

    • OMFG - Where was this when 20 "SOLID GOLD HITS OF THE (X)'s " were $3 a Kilo…

He did refer to an earlier Bluetooth version he'd tested which sounded interesting.

  • Deal over? Showing full price here (-4% off).

How would this compare to a Shure M44-7 or White label?

  • Would this work on a NuMark TTUSB? I'm new to turntables and im very confused about compatibility and what's worth it! Currently using stock Numark stylus.

  • Dammit…I also have the Yamaha TTS303 turntable and would have liked this cartridge as an upgrade.

    • The AT95E is a very popular level entry cartridge that will be a good upgrade for you. Currently $69.95 at Discrepancy Records online store.
