  • Why they are adding colour!

    • +4

Colour 160a gives it that golden colour. By itself it's the colour of orange cheese powder (like in Mac n cheese lol)

Can't say I've ever made croissants from scratch (as in pastry from scratch, puff pastry has the same added colour) to see if it still turns golden, though almost every ingredient here is white and that's hardly appealing.

      • +5

Yes puff pastry from scratch with no color additive becomes golden. Even more golden and shiny when you add a mixture of egg yolk on top before it goes in the oven.

      • +30

Natural colour 160a is in the butter. The same dye is in every yellow margarine you've ever seen too. It is naturally extracted from carrots, hence the name, Natural Colour.

Reason is consumers expect butter to look yellow, but that's not always true. The colour of cow milk changes from white to yellow throughout the year, depending on whether or not the cow is eating grasses that contain yellow pigment. Farmers wanting yellow butter can choose to supplement their dairy cow food with special grasses (expensive), or the milk processor can blend in the dye (cheap).

Pastry manufacturers are wanting to use cheap margarine or vegetable oils. For an upgrade to butter, they will use the cheapest butter (with added dye) as possible.

This comment is underrated. Interesting info

        • +1

yeah ….look at lurpak butter it’s almost white when fresh ……

      Why they are adding colour!

The black & white ones weren't selling too well…

Every now and then you say something funny jv. Here, take an upvote

      • +7

Can confirm Coles tried zebra croissants a couple of years ago.

You don't see them now, so I'm guessing it didn't do well enough

        • +1

          Not when it’s $2 a croissant!

          • @VerticallyIntegrated: Coles stock a frozen croissant 6 pack for $6.50. These are actually pretty good. Made in France so have a few food miles on them. They are my go to for a Sunday morning

  • +4

i find that they seem to vary in quality in different Woolworth stores and unsure why.
Forgot which store it is best to get from in Victoria

    • +8

I put in airfryer for at least a minute and it's crispy.

      • +7

I put in microwave for at least a minute and it's soft.

        • +2

          Use airfryer

          • +2

@ScoMosas: soft and chewy is the best

            • -2

@[Deactivated]: What's the point of having a croissant then?

You can have Woolies soft bun microwaved for a couple of secs. It's going to taste the same and is probably a bit healthier.

              • @pizzaguy: doesn't taste the same, a normal roll tastes bland, you need to put something in it

a proper croissant has a little bit of chew to it, but it also tastes good.

if it's too flaky, it's too dry.

                • -1

@[Deactivated]: I was confused by the subject (cheap woolies "croissants") and your previous opinion ("soft and chewy are the best"), neither of which had much to do with a "proper croissant" IMO.

                  • +1

@pizzaguy: it's irrelevant whether it's from woolies or not, a croissant tastes better when it's soft and chewy, not flaky.

the point of having a croissant is that it's soft and chewy, and it tastes good by itself.

a soft bun doesn't taste the same as a croissant, you may as well ask why not eat some rice, it's soft and chewy too (but bland).

          • @ScoMosas: I put the air fryer inside the microwave. They come out soft on the inside and crispy on the outside.

      • +1

Stick em in the oven for a minute helps a lot too. Crsipy on the oustide, warm on the inside.

    • +7

Agree, the last ones I had from Woolworths were revolting, like stale sweet white bread in croissant shape. My go to supermarket croissant is these https://shop.coles.com.au/a/the-pines/product/butter-croissa… but are frozen so require a tiny bit more planing, and they are not cheap.

      • +4

That was my exact same experience - dry, stale, and bread-like. A croissant should be flaky on the outside, but not dry on the inside. It should be buttery, not bread like.

      • +1

Woolies & Coles croissants taste very little like proper croissants - I don't even think they use the right kind of flour (I'm not a pastry chef but that's what my uni French lecturer told me - but either way real croissants are MUCH better).

        • +1

Generally agree, I’d say the closest to a real croissant I’ve had from the supermarket is those frozen bake at home ones from coles. Convenient to keep in without having to leave the house. The ones from the bakery section are very meh.

          • +3

@morse: I bought croissants in black cardboard box from coles. They were expensive but tasted very good

      • +1

My go-to as well. they're pretty good.

    • -1

      What makes the ideal croissant?

I like a crispy outer shell but soft inside.

      • +3

Proper laminated pastry, so when you cut it open you see the layers and can taste the butter.

      • Lots of layers. Should be messy when you eat it.

  • +7

Are these any better than the mini-croissants - I tried those once and honestly felt it was misleading advertising to label them as croissants.

    • Agree!! They are average at best.. and thats being generous.

    • It's misleading to suggest Woolies for croissants.

  • +6

    Costco croissants are da bomb!

    • especially when its on sale too :)

  • +2

Large? You should see the Coles ones.

  • +1

I have never been able to get my hand on these. Either get there too early (just after 7am) and they not ready yet or too late after 9am and they are all gone.

    • +6

You aren't missing anything. It is a crime to call them croissants

    • +1

I have gotten them once. I have tried to find them 20 times though.

  • +6

The same comment every time this deal pops up - they are not large and they are rubbish compared to the coles ones.

    • +7

They are rubbish compared to actual, real croissants from a proper Patisserie.

      • +3

But you can get 10 for the price of 1. Essentially a different product.

        • +2

If you're going to eat an indulgence like a croissant, I would personally rather eat a 'real one' rather than go to the trouble of trying to make the best of a so-so supermarket one.

    • Does Coles have regular sales on 10 croissants for $4.50?

      • -1

No, but the quality of the Coles ones is far better than the Woolworths ones even if you have to pay extra.

        • +4

not sure if a neg was required. You don't go negging Xiaomi vacuums because Dyson ones are a lot better, do you?

People like this for what it is, and for 1/2 price it's a deal. You can't neg this because another store sells another product for not even the same price. Just don't vote if you don't like it.

    • -1

they are rubbish compared to the coles ones.

Tends to be the case with most of woolies baked products.

  • +2

I'd rather spend $4.50 and get one nice croissant than get 10 rubbish ones from Woolies. Don't know what Coles ones are like but I can't imagine they are that much better. Local bakery ones are pretty good. Costco ones are really good too.

    • +3

Try the Coles Finest Butter Croissant made from French butter they are same or better than a single $4.50 cafe quality Croissant.

      • Our local bakery is pretty good. I've tried a lot of different products at a lot of different bakeries over the years just to compare and nothing comes close. I'm not including any specialty bakeries though. I'll take a look at the Coles one next time though.

      • I've tried and I disagree. Different price point still though and being able to have it at home is a bonus.

    • +1

where can you buy a single croissant for $4.50? aren't they like $8 now

      • $10 and you'll get a soggy crossiant with coffee that tastes like the beans were used three times and the milks burnt

        straya!

      • +1

Been a while since I've been but Le Bon Choix's retail menu online reckons they are $3.90. Haven't had one for possibly over a year now, but I remember it being pretty tasty.

      • Seriously? For real? $8??
I must live in a different world to the norm

    • -2

      I wouldn't. 10 average > 1 fancy

    • +1

The Coles ones in the large cardboard tray are actually very good.

  • +3

Skip the bakery and head to the frozen section for the Coles bake at home croissants. Can't get em at woolies. You won't regret it.

    • I have not seen them in about a year or so. Sadly

      • +1

They’d been out of stock for a bit but made a reappearance in SE QLD at least of late.

    • Gonna check the local, will try in air fry and microwave and will report back

  • Maybe worth it about 2 or 3 years ago when they were bigger and better.
    These days they're just rubbish.

  • -3

Whenever they do this, the woolworths near me stops selling them for a week. These (profanity) tell me to but the rip off 3 pack instead.

    • They stop stocking them, or people buy them out before you get a chance?

  • -1

Not an Ozbargain deal but if you want amazing croissants (and other authentic French pastries) in Adelaide visit Canelle at 123 Magill Rd.

  • +2

    They're cheap for a reason.

    • its called a 'loss leader', to get you into the store.
If they even make a loss, that is

      • I go to woolies for many things, but their croissants isnt one of them.

        • do you go to woolies for their 'fresh' fruit and veggies?

  • Only good for dipping in coffee

  • I quite like these croissants.5mins in the airfryer and the flake up quite nicely. Sure, they don't taste like they're from a french patisserie but for $0.50each, they're pretty good. (Much nicer than the 12pk boxed croissants you get from Coles which have no flakiness and taste more like the ones you buy on the metal trays)

  • +1

cut it them in half and into the toaster ….. one of the good things from lockdown is the breville coffee machine and grinder and eating more stuff at home …….$4.50 for coffee in a cafe and $3 for a cold croissant ….cheaper coffee at home, croissant is warm from the toaster and jam of my choice …..not surprised we are having trouble at work getting people back into the office with cafe prices for coffees and lunch.

i normally buy the 3 pack at woolies for $2.50, is the 10 pack the same dough just more per pack ?
