Is the base M2 macbook air still having that SSD speed issue?

    • +3

      it is.

i own one. it's not apparent for my usage of it. I love it. i got the midnight colour. it's very nice. (PC user for 20 years, first mac)

i'm currently not editing photos or videos on it. i might dabble back into photoshop at some point but I'm not going to be transferring like 10-100gb of raw files lol.

you've just got to ask yourself, if you need the speed, why don't you spend a little more and get something better for not that much more than you're already spending?

    • +4

Yes, but the issue is overblown to be honest. Reasons are:

      • For those tasks which really cause this problem, is M2 the right choice? Wouldn't M1 Pro or M1 Max be better?
      • How often do you copy a large chuck of data to that laptop constantly?
      • It shifts your focus to the SSD where the upgrade isn't that cheap. So, do you go for RAM upgrade or SSD upgrade? If you have to upgrade both, then is M2 still the better way forward?
      • A Thunderbolt 3 enclosure with a decent 1TB NVMe SSD runs faster in benchmark apps than the internal SSD in M2 (even the 512GB one). However, that setup will cost you $150 and it does turn the Macbook into a dongle book.
      • It comes down to the tests. There are tests where the 256GB SSD M2 Macbook Pro still beats 512GB SSD M1 Macbook Pro (even with I/O (file transfer) involved in the test).
      • You have great points, perhaps I'm over thinking the whole thing.
I currently have a 2019 Macbook pro, which is mostly great, but I do have 'M' envy for processing power and battery life. I have just shifted over from predominantly Windows dev (on a windows laptop) to Android/IOS development and have to run Parallels for 1 app that there is no Mac version (and WINE fails to run), which is where I really notice I get performance issues. I honestly just don't want to spend 3K - 4K to get the 14 or 16" macbooks.

Most of us would prefer M2 based devices, preferably cost effective ones. However, in your case, it is for development, you probably want both the RAM upgrade and the SSD upgrade. As soon as you factor those in, then M1 Pro makes more sense. Better GPU, better display, more ports, HDMI, card reader.

There is no easy solution. It's best not to overspend if you go for Macbook Air or Macbook Pro 13 inch. However, the base models don't really suit you.

        • I benchmarked both. 2019 MBP 16" 16GB 6 Core Intel Compiling java project connected to power took - 3min 20Sec. 13" M1 Pro 8GB 512GB, compiled the same project with 15 crome tabs running youtube videos in 2 min 40sec. Without the videos, roughly less than 2 mins - all while on battery. I was blown away at what apple had achieved!

But guess what, that 13" mbp that I borrowed for testing had 13% HDD life eaten by swap. And it was just used by a marketing manger for 1.5 Years - so nothing intensive was run on it.

So for development, look no less than 16GB 512GB 14" atleast. I returned it back to office becuase if I used it for development, I would eat into full SSD life within a few months lol. And I could connect to only 1 external display unless I spent loads on a TB enabled dock.

    • It’s not an “issue”, it’s just the specification of the internal component. One chip instead of two means half the speed. It (most likely) won’t get “fixed”.

      • I really didn't know the specifics, but was surprised when youtubers were recommending the M1 Air over the M2 Air. I get the same way over car reviews, and overthink it all :D

I was able to price match at the apple store for ease of returns and cutting on the middle man in service.

Haven't seen M2 air price drop before. Thanks for posting !

    • Price matching with apple, is it done online?

      • in store

  • Should I go with 32gb of ram?

    • +2

Tim Apple says you should go with M1 Max, 64GB RAM and 4TB storage.

      • haha I'm done with maxed out mac. I did it twice and never again because resale price is not as good as base model. However Ram upgrade could be justified but I don't know if it would make big difference in real life usage. I mainly do video editing and photo editing.

        • For work? If so, I reckon the RAM upgrade is worth it.

  • +1

i think Apple AOC is slightly cheaper

  • any m1 air deals? m2 is not worth the price difference

    • 10% off m1 air on Amazon as well.
      Base model $1,349.
