I Stopped HODLing. You?

I waited for the ETH merge and kept an eye on Ebay for some deals, knowing that any bargains I might find could have been used for mining. I found a second hand PNY Uprising RTX 3080 for $772 shipped and bought it. I'm used to EVGA cards so this one felt pretty plasticky by comparison. It's quiet and works just fine though.

Since the merge I haven't really seen prices come down much. So my question to the HODLers is: Are you all still HODLing, or have you caved or found a bargain?

Note: If you do grab an Ampere card, be aware of transient power spikes. I have a top tier Platinum Seasonic 660W PSU which should be well within spec and only shows 500W max power draw from the wall when maxing both CPU and GPU. I've had to limit my GPU power draw to stop the PSU from going into OCP reboot.

    • That is interesting. I have been getting black screen issues and when I looked into my power draw (and my PSU is platinum 1000w - Dell), it only drew at best 400w and I got 3080. I always have my suspicion on my PSU but not sure.

      What's OCP reboot mean?

      • +2

Over current protection. Try using afterburner or something similar to reduce power draw. 1000w is a lot of PSU. Still worth a shot though.

    • Interesting, I've had the same problem, although I suspected GPU driver issues as log files sometimes suggested it was the GPU driver was the point of failure.

Also a 1000W GPU like the above though. What did you limit your GPU power draw to? I wouldn't mind trying that out, see if it fixes anything.

It has been odd to diagnose until now, GPU passes any stress testing and it has never crashed during a game, happens more in Chrome than anything else.

My issue happens under load only. Power draw is stable at 60% but I only have a 660w PSU. With 1000w surely you wouldn't have to drop it below 90%.

        • In that case it's probably not the same then.

Really annoying issue because pinpointing it has been a nightmare. Almost wondering if it's just the house power being the issue, had a few electronics of late acting strangely that I can't figure out the cause of.

  • nah just waiting for next gen. I figure just not worth the drama of grilling sellers for history of the cards/ if any mods been done etc.

    • You think the mid range cards will be under $1k?

      • no but imo not worth the risk personally

        • For me, if I have to pay more than 1K for mid range then I'm out. No more PC gaming hardware for me.

  • +3

I'll wait until my 970 stops working and see what's around on the day.

  • +2

I just ordered a 3080 12gb for 1k new. Even if there’s warranty, I don’t want to risk it for just 100-200 during one of the most mined generations.

    • That’s a pretty good deal too. Huge performance. Hope you've got a decent PSU.

    • +1

      Where'd you score a 1k 3080 12GB?

        • +1

Nice man. By the time I saw that deal (I think like 60-90 mins after it was posted) the entire page was down.

          • @dazza-bo: Yeah that's exactly what happened. It came back online eventually but it was more expensive.

            • +1

@ChillBro: Wonder if it was a mistake and they meant to put up the 10gb card for that price.

              • +1

@dazza-bo: That's possible since I've never seen a 12GB this low before but perhaps the 4000 series announcement made them want to clear it out? I've already received a tracking number for mine though so hopefully I'll receive it soon.

They have the internet on computers now??

      Only with optus.

Put missus on treadmill: No more spikes!

  • Miners are still in denial. Wait until reality sets in and the market gets flooded with cards. Buy them for a healthy discount where it's worth the risk of a used card.

  • I sold my 1080 got $350 for it a couple months ago and now find myself just playing more PS5 on my 77C1 will probably buy later down the track when games need a decent GPU as PC gaming has become stagnant

  • HODL! waiting to see some actual performance and latency results for the new dlss - and also a card teardown from GN
see how the 3090 ti stacks up against the gimped 4080

on EKWB say they have active backplates for 4000 gen which may mean ram on top/bot of the card again which is a bummer if true

so far the only card that i have seen that 'looks good' is the ichill 4090 😂

    • +1

They seem to be all over 3 slots too no matter which card you go for. 12GB 4080 seems way too expensive.

  • I'm just waiting for a good deal on either a 6700 xt or a 6800 since I missed the afterpay ones

    • There was an amazing 6800 XT deal a while ago for $799.00

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/714597

      • I saw that, but my PSU won't support the XT. Also I only realized today I could also go for a 6800. Before I was decided on a 6700 xt.

    • Would this suit you?

      • Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm trying to ether hold out for a higher tier model at the current average prices or a deeper discount on the bottom tier models.

And with the price drop yesterday that sounds probable if I wait a bit longer

I used to be with 'it', but then they changed what 'it' was. What I'm with isn't 'it' anymore and what's 'it' seems weird and scary.

  • I’m close to breaking. All it’s going to take is for BPC to post a tasty 3080 or 3080ti and I’ll be gone. Pref for intel if the free MW2 offer is still on

  • PNY is good, I had a PNY GTX1060
But there were RTX3080 deals for $999 few days ago

GALAX GeForce RTX 3080 SG 1 Click OC (10GB) Graphics Card $999
    GALAX GeForce RTX 3080 SG PCI-E 12GB GDDR6X Video Card $999

    • Great news!

I bought a 3080 on launch day and haven't looked back.
4k series looks like a nightmare (Financially), so in hindsight I'm glad I didn't try hold out for them.

    • I think you made the right decision. Not sure what AMD has to offer yet though.

  • +1

I'm having difficulty attaching to my Macbook Air.

    • +3

Have you tried backing over it with your car and buying a PC?

  • Really glad I bought a used Strix 3080 back in April for $1000 (shiny white Gundam one too). Yes I could have saved a couple of hundred bucks, but during that time I put 80 odd hours into Cyberpunk (until the 1.6 update broke too many things), played God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and a bunch of other games in shiny 4K.

I was able to check out the mining setup prior though which made me more comfortable. Minimal dust, kept cool, limited voltage, the only real concern is the fans themselves. But I can always just rip them off and zip tie on some other fans if they break.

    • I've heard about fan concerns, but even in your average gaming rig they do a lot of spinning. I'd be surprised if the failure rate was that much higher in mining setups.

      • More heat and running at a faster speed when mining would be my guess. It could just be internet folklore that mining will ruin fans though - probably because so many mining rigs aren't well looked after though (i.e. not in a case, left outside to help keep cool and keep the noise down, etc).

Most gaming rigs these days unless someone is actually gaming the fans don't spin most of the time.

        • left outside

I've literally never seen or heard of a mining rig being left outside other than jokes.

  • i got my 3080 a year ago for 1500.

  • i don't see any reason to upgrade from my 2070, it ran cyberpunk with minimal issues (frame drops, just restart the game and it's fixed), it can run anything.

i would rather buy a macbook than the exorbitant 4k series. nvidia going downhill, fast.

    • I was on a 1070. Not much Cyberpunk joy there.

  • +1

I bought retail a while ago because I got sick of waiting. No regrets because I'm not getting any younger.

  • I got sick of waiting for 3060 Tis to come down, and bought the ASUS 3060 for $500 from the deal here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/717346

Have used it an absolute boatload, have benefited massively from the 12gb ram (basically been running textual inversion in Stable Diffusion for several weeks straight, which needs ~11gb of vram minimum), and have played some games without thinking about the settings at all for once and just putting them all on max. For bonus points, I'm not checking GPU prices once or multiple times a day like I was for probably over a year, and have saved so much time. And sold my old card for ~$125 while it still had some value.

All in all, maybe the happiest I've ever been with any single purchase, except maybe my first smart phone.

    • +1

Checking prices is exhausting. $500 is a good amount to pay for a GPU.

  • I am still HODL'ing for myself. I did buy a 3080 from BPTech a couple of months back for my brother's system, but I'm HODL'ing until more information about RDNA3 and the prices.

Currently, on AORUS 2070 Super and recently purchased the LG C2 42", so I am keen to upgrade… although I doubt these RDNA3 cards would be priced at what the 6800XT/6900XT priced right now.

Running thin on my HODL considering I haven't seen many deals/availability on the 6800XT since August…

    • Even the second hand prices of 6800 XT cards are stupid right now. Hopefully another $799 deal or better isn't far off.
