AFTERHOURS

Low price on this already on sale 43" 4K TV from FFalcon (TCL's budget brand) that gets reduced even further with the coupon code. I picked one up myself a while ago for the shed and I think the performance and picture quality is good for the price. The sound isn't bad either, but it's still probably best to hookup speakers or a soundbar.

When you say "good for the price" - can you expand on that a little?

Are there any issues with the TV picture?

Or is it comparable to, say, a budget Hisense?

    • Good for the price in that you're getting a $400 4K TV close to $300 when the next cheapest is a budget Hisense and everything after that is more than triple the price.

      • Is it visibly worse than a Hisense?

If only a tiny bit…I might purchase. If significantly, I'll give it a miss!

        • Dunno don't have a Hisense.

Earlier this year I bought 3 ultra budget TVs. A Bauhn from ALDI, a FFalcon from JB and an Eko from BigW. Our 2 TVs both got water damaged in the space of a week during the big Sydney rains and I decided to stretch the budget by going cheaper so I could have an extra panel.

The FFalcon is the best of the 3, marginally better than the Bauhn. Best software if the 3 though it's still pretty janky.

The Eko is hot garbage. Terrible viewing angles, no blacks, average colours and almost unwatchable for sport.

I don't care enough about TV to spend big money on panels, but I won't ever buy this cheap ever again. I would chance there TCL or Hisense, but not these super budget panels. Too many compromises on performance and usability.

I'm stepping even higher now as the proud owner of several tcls of the bigger arsed variety…. knowing that I've bought from the premium line!!

  • Have had issues knowing folks that have had issues with their TCLs. Dunno.

But for 300 bucks you can't really go wrong on price either..

I have the 55" version which seems to be an older model than this 43" one (UF2 vs UF3 and dual core CPU vs quad core). Mine was $499 less a 10% offer at the time as well, so about $450 (plus extra savings using gift cards). Overall I am pretty happy with it.

4K works pretty well, but I found that mine doesn't up scale the fast moving action of AFL very well (even with sports mode selected); it might be better with the quad core. It seems to do well with other content though. I've watched some 4K content from Fetch's movie box selections. If it's TV content that needs to be up scaled and it is fast moving sport, then this will be a disappointment unless the quad core makes up for it.

These are made by TCL for JB HiFi in case you didn't know.

I've also seen the 55" priced at $399, not sure if that was an error because the 50" was the same price.

I don't use any of the smart TV features, it's just a display for my Fetch TV Mighty.

Brightness is very high and the energy use (see screenshot) of both of these is quite exceptional (6 star 170kWh vs 265kWh).

For what it's worth, the 55" fit nicely in the back seat of a VT Commodore, so pick up was easy.

    • VT Commodore wins this.

      • Barra craps over ecocrap motor anyday

        • Sure this isn't a car thread, but the VT is so much more economical than the barra and it's a pretty good old car for what it's worth; too good to junk, not good enough to sell, still going strong.
