I think you are misunderstanding what the point of eating cake is.

Want low carb low sugar? Eat a carrot.

    • +2

If they did it, the taste would be so vile that nobody, except hardcore fans like yourself, would buy it a second time.

Secondly, the “healthy” edition sometimes has a catch. Take for example plant based meat: non-existent levels of fat, and levels of sodium so obscene relative to red meat, that I’d rather stick to chicken.

I’m all for healthy eating, but if they could make it commercially viable for cakes, it’d be done by now.

      • It can be done.
I have a freind who is a cake baker.
She makes amazing low carb cakes and muffins all the timw. You cant really tell the difference.
She has a large customer base for health consious people

    • +2

      You sound like fun!

      • Ive been eating low carb for ages.
If you look for the right products, you cant tell thw difference
Bonus is your body feels 10 years younger and skin looks heaps younger
        I can still outrun teenagers

But ill leave the couch for you 🤣🤣🤣

        • +3

I'm plenty fit, as is my family - thanks for the presumptuous comment. I consider myself to be fit (I run three times a week, balanced diet), but I'll leave the claim-making about whether I can outrun others to yourself, if it makes you feel better.

It's about moderation. For a birthday party with my son and a bunch of other kids in his age group, I don't think a low carb carrot cake would hit the mark.

          • -6

            @b2dz:

I run three times a week

Oh wait, you sound like fun! , but that was your comment

            Yeh .. nah ..

No worries , enjoy your couch 👍🏻

I'll leave the claim-making about whether I can outrun others to yourself, if it makes you feel better.

Haha .. yeh come to my gym and ill prove it to you

            • +4

@easternculture: Sounds fun, I'll bring the low carb carrot cake

              • -5

@b2dz: Bankstown crunch everyday after 7pm

Ill bring a few big macs for you and a Caramel Glaze Mudcake

            • +2

@easternculture: You are such a loser lmao

              • -2

@bloopzorm9: Not as low as you apparently 🤣🤣

                • -1

@easternculture: Be sure you share your epic nutrition tips with Dwayne Johnson. He'd never eat massive plates of white rice or brownies or cookies or cake or…oh wait

It's almost like once in a while is fine and you're just wrong

And by almost I mean exactly

                  • @GrueHunter: Oh wait. Your trusting an article from Golfdigest . Kinda reminds me of the bullshit they used to publish in readers digest.

And why would i care what the rock eats.

                    • @easternculture: He doesn't know the difference between a slave and a job. You're wasting your time :P

    • I like it exactly as it is, thankyou. In fact it's what I'll use the coupon on

    • You can replace sugar with something like erythritol which tastes very similar. You have slurpies and soft drink with low sugar- it can be done for cakes too. The only issue is that erythritol is very expensive and other low calorie sweeteners such as sucralose are not so great for you and can be harmful

  • +1

I can have my cake and eat it too?

    • +4

You can buy a cake and eat it too

    • Yes, but only in that order.

      • You could go to a cafe, order it, eat it then pay for it.

    Thanks mate lunch sorted

Caramel Glaze Mudcake(cheesecake.com.au) coming in with the highest calorie count ;-)

It's also the best! I was actually surprised to find that a cheesecake shop cake could be so good!

    • +1

      Because “The”.

    • I am surprised with the cheesecake shop actually. I feel like it went downhill quite a few years ago, but recently it has bounced back? Maybe I am just imagining it. But I'll get most birthday cakes etc from there now. Decent price but still really good.

      • +5

I miss the days when their black forest cake had actual cherries in it, not just a smear of jam.

        • I miss the day when they don't freeze their cake.

  • +1

Shame there's no stores in Sydney Inner West or CBD.

    • sadly the best cheesecake shop in the inner west (Marickville) closed a few years ago

  • Cheesecake shop is shady… Never could trust it again after becoming violently ill with a dodgy cheesecake…

I used to go there frequently but have totally lost the taste since then.

  • +1

People pay over $30 for a cake?

    • yeah, even $10 off the price is still an expensive cake. I make my own, but not everyone can do that…and it is a pain when I have to do 2 for my kids, as well as cook for Christmas and Boxing Day at the same time….their birthdays are both just before Christmas. They don't live nearby, so I do both for when everyone comes over on Boxing Day….one likes lemon the other choc lol

      • +2

I'd just make them some fairy bread and call it a day!

        • +4

hahahahaha…Classy….one will be 30 this year and another 33, so…fairy bread might be a little bit of a let down, although my daughter would prob be happy with a Paul's Ice-cream cake (if they still make them)

          • +1

@souths123: Can I be your son and you make me a cake?

Man I haven't had a parent-aly made cake for like 25 years. Props to you for keeping it up.

        • +2

Fairy bread is fantastic. It's colourful sugar on sugar with fat to stick it all together. What's not to like!

      • +2

When you factor in total costs twenty dollars is cheap. The box itself is like 5 dollars.

Now if you have time then yes you could make it cheaper. But it really depends on the type of cake you make. It most likely be a sponge cake.

      • any proven recipe ?

    • +7

average cake price is like $50

      • woolies/coles have cakes too

    • +1

well i mean they are pretty nice cakes if you intend to share it with people - because they are open early and close late it's my usual go to if I need to pick up something to take along to a party / dinner with friends etc.

    • +10

Its actually very expensive to make a cheesecake, or a mudcake. The ingredients are more than flour and eggs. The amount of cream cheese, or chocolate or whatever does add up. Not saying it costs $30 to make one, but the ingredient costs are significant for a cheesecake.

      • +3

its 5.70 for cream cheese. you need four blocks for a serving 8/10 people.

        also six eggs.

I don't think they are using those ingredients though to make it.

    • +5

The ingredients in a cake usually don't cost much but it's a very labour intensive dessert and we have one of the highest cost of labour in the world.

      • +1

cheesecake is more expensive to make by the time you add cream cheese, marscapone / eggs etc

    • It's like people paying over $1000 for a TV. Why?

      Same logic mate!

  • +6

The standard of Dining & Takeaway bargains on this website is directly related to my BMI.

  • +7

we owned a cheesecake shop franchise for 10 years at eight mile plains in the late 1990's. all the cakes were made fresh but were immediately frozen to make them last longer. then we just had to make sure the cake was defrosted, had fresh cream and were decorated ready for you to pick it up. fun times

    • I had a friend who worked there and I think she said some of the cakes on display were very old. Could she mean frozen or do some stores not get rid of their old display cakes?

      • I believe they just freeze them these days and be frozen them to be on the display and froze them again when they don't sell at the end of the day.

I use to get cakes from them 3/4 years ago, my local started freezing them 2 years ago.

I don't understand they don't put cream on the side for their Torte, it is just a mess with their layering and putting cream would hide this at least from everybody when I bring out the cake.

    • +1

Wow. Good insight. How profitable was the shop? And was the taste degradation noticeable after being frozen? (Could you tell if a cake had been frozen and defrosted?)

      • +24

Our family owned and ran the shop. We wouldn't sell our display cakes usually because they were up to 2 weeks old. The only time we would sell them is if the customer needed it that day or we knew it was fresh. Otherwise we'd ask them to come pick it up tomorrow so we had time to defrost and decorate one from out the back. It's hard to tell if the cake has been frozen/defrosted. These days I would assume 100% of the cakes are defrosted.

The hardest and most expensive cake was the Black Forrest at around $20. We'd make them in batches of ~20 on any given day and they would go into the freezer for a couple of weeks until they were expired or sold.

The shop had a good profit when run by family and staffed with teenagers. January/February were quiet months and the shop would only be open 4 days a week.

All the single slices, quaters, and halves you see in the refridgerated unit in the shopfront are close to expiry and won't be as fresh. The use-by stickers are all exaggerated and typically the older a cheesecake is the harder it is. I would not buy these and instead ask if they had any fresh cakes instead.

Back then we were selling whole continential and baked cheescakes for $9 each. Now they're all $20 and most of the profit has been eaten up by franchise fees, increased supplier costs, and rent/wages.

I do believe most people understood the cakes had to be frozen because there was no way we could make fresh and store all these different varities at any given time. Typically we would only make 2-3 different batches of cakes every day.

It was all about managing stock of each cake making sure we had enough or were making enough cakes to keep up.

        • +1

Interesting, thanks for that! And I love black forest cake! Worth buying as well because I've tried making it and it's hard and doesn't taste nearly as good!

        • +1

Can I ask why there is no cream on the side of the Torte? it used to be nicer but now the layering is just a mess and can be seen from the outside.

          • @SnoozeAndLose: I honestly don't know, sorry. All I can speak to is that the recipies and cakes do change over time. All our carrot cakes were made to order because it wasn't popular enough to make in batches. Then we were told by our franchise rep to stop offering hummingbird cakes.

Our franchise rep was very non-chalant, very easy going and a dream to deal with though.

      • I know they freeze it, I pre-ordered a cake, took it home and the cream is hard like ice cream.

  • Had the caramel popcorn birthday cake for my birthday. Was awesome

  • Thanks OP. Ordered one.

  • hmm why exclude vegan cakes ?

Website is not discounting online, (not even standard ones)

    • +2

Just be happy they're doing a vegan version. That's your discount right there.

    • +1

      Oof, what a good deal.

  • Are the mudcakes really rich?

    • +3

I've only had the caramel one - but yes, it is extremely decadent and rich. Everything a mudcake should be.

  • Just ordered the Caramel Glaze Mudcake, thanks OP. hope its as good as it sounds :3

  • +2

Are these mudcakes better than the $5 mudcake from Coles?

    • This

    • Yes, alot better. The caramel glaze mudcake is awesome. If I didn't need to lose 10kg, I'd be all over this deal.

  • +2

I used to love their tortes, but they are considerably less tasty and have less fillings than before, while charging a whole lot more. I’m sure their cheesecakes are still good though…

    Mississippi Baked Cheesecake FTW!

  • +1

Can everybody comment on your fav cake plz? Mine was the rainbow cake (i have only tried 3 types ever). Have stopped getting the rainbow cake now cuz I feel like they use too much colouring (had coloured poo for two days after eating!)

    • Mississippi cheesecake

Though it has to be said, the main reason I tried it is they have the promo that you receive $15 off the a full Mississippi cheesecake (Making it $24.95) if you can spell Mississippi with one i when you order…
*ends October 31, 2022 and available at all stores Australia-wide, no other discounts can be applied, one cake per day per person, until stocks run out

      • +2

        Deal link?

        • Hmmm, I saw it on Facebook Ads, but didn't take a screenshot but went into the store and did the spelling thing with no problems

          • @Heaps for Cheaps: And what's that spelling ?? Want to buy someone a cake.

because to be honest this $10 of deal DOES NOT WORK AT ALL ONLINE not once. to any cakes I tried to order online (none are in exclusion)

            MISSISSIPPI BAKED
            COOKIES & CREAM
            QUAD CHOC BAKED
            BELGIAN DOUBLE CHOC MUDCAKE
            BLACK FOREST TORTE

And i just give them that spelling ??? to get cake @ $25 ? yeah ?

            • @USER DC: No, it's like the McDonalds jingle about two all beef patties, special sauce etc where you say the jingle at the store, though I am not sure if it was just a September thing tbh… and it was only for the one cake variety, Mississippi baked.

            • @USER DC: I just tried it on the quad choc and it took it down to $24.95. Tossing up between that, mississippi or belgian choc mudcake.

      • Tried this. Was very disappointing. The description did not mention the cinnamon flavour in the base (not sure if that a new thing), would have not bought it if I had known. The cinnamon flavour was too strong.

  • +1

Completely lost interest in this shop after two stale cakes. Also the last time I checked, they don't serve Jamaican chocolate cake anymore. (I could be wrong)

  • Do they do any baked cheesecakes?
