STENKOL NiMH AA/AAA Smart Battery Charger $10 + Delivery (+ $5 C&C/ $0 in-Store) @ IKEA

210

Probably the cheapest individual charging channel smart battery charger available from an Australian retailer.

For the ozbargain battery veterans -This is a smart battery charger with individual minus or zero delta voltage detection (-dV/dT or 0dV/dT), has individual battery charging, can charge 1-2 AA batteries in 3 hours and 3-4 AA batteries in 6 hours, does not overheat the batteries as it is not a fast charger, does not require external power adapter like other chargers, can be left plugged in a power outlet instead of fiddling with power cables when batteries need charging, Australian electrical certification, available from Australian retailer, only $10!!!

For the uninitiated- this a worthy battery charger for eneloops, ladda and other NiMH AA AAA rechargeable batteries, only $10.

With STENKOL battery charger you can always have fully-charged batteries close at hand.

Easy to use, just insert the batteries into the charger and connect it directly to a wall socket.

4 individual charging channels allow you to charge 1 or up to 4 batteries at a time.

Suitable both for AA and AAA rechargeable NiMH batteries.

Turns off automatically when the batteries are fully charged, defective or too hot.

Provided with indicator light – clearly shows the charging status.

Charger features
• Charge 1 to 4 pieces of HR6/AA and/or 1 to 4 pieces of HR03/AAA rechargeable batteries.
• 4 charging slots. Connected batteries are charged
individually.
• Charge is terminated by individual minus or zero delta voltage detection (-dV/dT or 0dV/dT).
• Safety by separate safety timer and temperature sensors.
• Non-rechargeable and damaged batteries detection.
• Charging status with 2 colour LED indicator for each slot.

This suspiciously zealous description looks like a copywriting exercise.

    • +3

      Thanks, I guess??

  • Not too bad for a smart charger - whats the usual price?

  • +5

Not a bargain price. As remember, always selling at $10

    • It's still a bargain at $10 the fact that it is 4 individual channels monitoring and available locally and SAA approved electrical appliances.

The "battery veterans" part had me in stitches. Thanks for the post

    • +1

      you're welcome :)

  • genuinely interested, what makes this charger "smart" or suitable for eneloops etc over other cheap chargers?

    • +2

The ability to detect a full battery and stop charging.
So-called dumb chargers just keep on cooking the battery until you or their inbuilt timers shuts them off
Overcharging ruins most common battery types

      • interesting, i've currently got an eveready EVVC2. you wouldn't happen to know if that stops charging?

I know it indicates when charging is completed, but i don't know if it actually stops charging.

        • +1

Looks like eveready EVVC2 charges batteries in pairs which can cause degradation of batteries over time as two batteries can have two different state of charge, wear, capacity etc., no idea whether eveready EVVC2 is smart charger or not.

@aragorn: appreciate it, looks like i'm upgrading

            • +2

@whitepuma: Not that you need further convincing, but it's almost certainly a dumb, timer-based charger.

You can pretty easily tell by the charging time (or output current rating). Smart chargers need to charge quickly, as they detect a full cell by monitoring for a specific voltage dip that only occurs when charged quickly.

Dumb chargers almost never charge quickly, as this would be a fire hazard if somebody inserted a partly-charged battery. They need to go slowly, as over-charging a battery generates heat. By going slowly, you're still ruining your batteries, but they're only getting warm. Provided it doesn't burn your house down, Energizer isn't too bothered if you need to buy more batteries from them.

              • @JMC: @JMC Not true, please check out the user manual here:

                https://www.ikea.com/au/en/manuals/stenkol-battery-charger__…
                It states on page 7:
                "• Charge 1 to 4 pieces of HR6/AA and/or 1 to 4
                pieces of HR03/AAA rechargeable batteries.
                • 4 charging slots. Connected batteries are charged
                individually.
                • Charge is terminated by individual minus or zero
delta voltage detection (-dV/dT or 0dV/dT).
                • Safety by separate safety timer and temperature
                sensors.
                • Non-rechargeable and damaged batteries
                detection.
                • Charging status with 2 colour LED indicator for
                each slot "

It does have delta voltage detection, making it a smart charger alongwith above mentioned features.

@aragorn: I meant their old EVVC2 charger, which has a maximum output of 360mA and takes 7 hours to charge an AA.

It's possible that the EVVC2 is slightly smart, and shuts off when a voltage threshold is reached, but it's hard to know for sure.

The Ikea charger is smart, as are most of the older models they've sold.

                  • @JMC: Oh I see! I thought you were referring to the IKEA charger. My apologies

Is the Nitecore D4 worth the premium?

    • +2

D4 can charge other battery types, so yes.
This is however more than suitable for charging AA/AAA batteries, and affordable

  • This is the regular price

  • is this any better than the LiitoKala Lii-402

    • LiitoKala Lii-402 is better. It's a USB charger that lets you select the charging current and indicates the progress of each battery.

    • +2

LiitoKala Lii-402 can charge other types of batteries, however LiitoKala Lii-402 requires external power supply.

  • Will this charge eneloops properly or do i need an eneloop charger?

    • +1

      This can charge eneloops properly

  • What voltage does this use? And are the standard grey laddas still made in Japan?

    • +1

      Here you go:

      TECHNICAL DATA
      Model: E2020 STENKOL
      Input: 100-240VAC, 65mA
      Output: 1.5V/ slot
      Current 4pcs 3pcs 2pcs 1pc
      AA/HR6 0.35A 0.46A 0.70A 0.70A
      AAA/HR03 0.20A 0.275A 0.40A 0.40A

No idea about the grey laddas being made in Japan

    • are the standard grey laddas still made in Japan?

I got some about a month ago and they are made in Japan

  • Ok in visiting ikea, my last ikea charger was ruined in a flood, someone watered the plant and it was sitting underneath the pot. I tried to bring it back to life but I couldn't lol
