Could be the last Apple TV you can buy.

    • What you mean by that?

    • +1

I’m surprised apple don’t make a literal tv

    • +7

Apple have their own streaming service, why would they stop making them? Plus it doesn't have an M chip in it yet. If you meant it could be the last one you buy, then you'll eventually upgrade to an 8K version when 8K TV is the norm. Then a hologram model or whatever.

      • You don't need an apple tv to watch apple tv/tv+, I use their app on my Xbox and it works flawlessly.
I can see a day when they stop making their own streaming box.
It's also available on most current smart TV's via the OS.

    • +7

So cryptic. Please tell us more. Is society about to collapse?

      • Sooner than you think !

  • This was like 75$ woth westpac points couple weeks ago

    • +2

      yeah probably 5,000,000 points

      • Under 20k
Still havent recieved shipping confirmation though

        • Same, still processing order.

  • +1

When will Apple TV with M1 chip release?

    • +3

Possibly in the special event this month

    • +9

An A15 would be more realistic.

      • Now we have the A15 Apple TV! Good prediction mate!

    • +7

      Overkill for no reason

Unless they want to get serious and do the following:

Put M1 chip in Apple TV
      512Gb storage
Buy Nintendo and all it’s IPs ( Mario Zelda and all)

      Aud $399

Now we have a legitimate Playstation competitor all of sudden.

      • +1

How about AR? AR content and gaming in TV+ and arcade.

      • +1

ah yes all it takes is buying Nintendo and making a new console. So simple

    • +1

An M1 ATV would be double the price of an A15 ATV.
If it was a serious console competitor that would possibly be Ok. If so there would also need to be a more basic model than the current ATV to cater for the other end of the market Apple currently ignores. The current ATV Is sort of in between.

      • There are so much that Apple can do with their AV line.
Like AR, serious gaming, high bitrate full quality caching/streaming and external dac support for audiophile.
I doubt they will waste their engineering resource to compete with fire stick and chromecast for the ultra low price market.

  • Anyone received their from Westpac yet?

    • Nope

    • +1

Negative. Neither is any of them on the FB market. All existing listings selling above $200, that's why I bought it from Amazon last night.

  • +2

Dumb question but can someone ELI5 the purpose of these? Is it just to watch Apple TV and you gotta pay for their streaming services?

    • +17

Basically to turn a dumb TV into a smart TV with streaming apps (including Netflix, Stan, Binge and whatever else you can think of). However with most smart TV softwares being so slow (especially for the cheaper ones) it’s still better to use one of these. It also does many more things that sometimes built in smart TV softwares don’t.

      • +1

        Cheers, replied below!

    • +13

Well, I got sick of Smart TVs being so dumb and sluggish I replaced it with Apple TV and all the problems are gone.

      For example:
Samsung Smart TV app would play 4k contents at lower fidelity and introduce gradation and crap.

Doesn’t work with certain receivers ARC functions and Dolby Atmos output

Come Apple TV = Everything solved immediately.

      • Right right I see, I just bought the Samsung S95B 65” from the deal posted here the other week. Wondering if this is better than the inbuilt apps then 🤔

        • +2

Yes the Apple TV is better. It’s a device dedicated to it and find Samsung etc get bloaty over time. Least this will be supported for abit and this model (maybe?) has apps

        • +3

If you only use one or two apps regularly. Then maybe not. If you like a smooth, responsive and fast UI and has a few different apps that you use then go for it. Also a plus if you have an iPhone, as you can use your iPhone as a controller (very responsive), especially to type things. Apple TV also works as a Hub for Homekit devices, such as Meross garage door opener. I get notifications for some of these devices on my TV.

I also use it to download apps from other countries and as well as to play Apple music in Dolby Atmos losless audio via eARC

        • +1

I bought the S95B from recent deal and Samsung's Tizen OS is painful to navigate. Worse than LG's. Apple TV with HDMI CEC essentially just replaced my TV OS. Quicker, simpler to navigate, fewer ads, and it's actually easier to hide Apple's TV app than Samsung Smart TV Plus subscription.

        • +1

Support all the use cases un this thread, to which I would add that TV brands stop updating their apps whereas Apple supports their ATV for a very long time. I still get security and OS updates for my ATV3 on the upstairs Dick Smith TV. I think I bought the ATV3 in 2012-2013. Sadly, some of the apps are no longer updated, and Disney was never made available.

    • +5

      I need it for
      - AirPlay
      - Apple Home Hub
      - Watching on AirPods.
      - Maybe some Arcade if Apple gifts me a trial.

  • +11

Have the 2017 version so can only imagine the 2021 is even better. Great device, very easy to setup if you're already an iphone user cause you literally just need to bring your iphone close to the device and that's pretty much it and the rest is straightforward.

Having own both an Nvidia shield 2017 and the Apple tv, I'd give the edge slightly in favor to the apple tv. It's intuitive, fast and at this price is reckon it can give the latest nvidia shield a run for it's money while also being cheaper.

    • +1

I have an LG C1 and the built in apps are ok but can crash from time to time. I'm also having random problems with ARC not working between the LG and my Yamaha receiver. This simply doesn't happen with the Apple TV 4K, it just works! I own both the Apple TV 4K (2017) and Nvidia Shield. Both are brilliant devices you can't go wrong with either. I would also say the Apple TV edges out the Shield ever so slightly especially at this price being cheaper than the Shield. Just my 2c worth

    • It's 3x more powerful than a Shield so I would say it does far more than give it a run for its money.

  • +2

32GB no longer available. Just after I purchased $200 worth of Amazon gift cards. FML

    • Next time buy first and apply gift card after

      • +1

This is exactly what I did for my AirPods Pro purchase from Amazon

        • Me too :)

      • wowzers - how is that done?

        • order details -> apply gift card balance, only works before item is shipped

  • +2

Switched to apple tv 4k from shield pro.

Apple tv much more refined for general use, but limited in the prosumer stuff (namely plex).

Great overall until shield gets the shit together and releases a frame matching model

Both great in their own ways

    • +1

Just curious. What is the limitation with plex on Apple TV? Compared to shield, does Apple TV 4K have more encoding/format supports, thus less transcoding on plex?

I'm considering getting either Apple TV (for smooth experience) or Google TV/shield (for google cast and assistant). Can't decide yet.

      • Plex seems to decode everything locally on ATV. Framerate matching, HDR 10, Dolby, etc.

      • The shield has its own plex server built in I believe, so you could connect a hard drive directly to it. ATV will need an external server or nas hosting your plex content.

I have much more experience with the ATV so I won't comment on shield codec support, but I've found the ATV 4k plays literally everything I throw at it without transcoding.

      • Atmos doesn't work.

Youd think it's a non-issue, and 5.1 should be fine but it's extremely noticibly worse on a good atmos system.

    • Have a shield pro and I've gone back to mostly using the apps on the TV due to the frame rate shenanigans on the Shield. They're definitely behind the competition when it comes to that.

  • +1

The most useful feature for me is being able to use my iPhone as a remote because my wife constantly loses the apple tv remote every time she sits down on the couch.

  • Did anyone happen to grab a screenshot of the 32GB model?

  • +1

    32gb not 4K model

And 64 gb is normal price for a few months already

  • Tivimate run on this?

  • -6

    Garbage

  • Another dumb question but why buy one of these when a Google TV stick or the Firestick are a third or the price? What does this offer that they dont?

    • +2

If you used both Google TV and Apple TV, You would know that Google TV offers more frustration (you get what you pay for). If you like things to be fast and responsive then there’s your answer. Moreover, it works as HomeKit hub, and is easily controllable via iPhone (than half baked remote offered by Google TV app). Can easily set up IDs for different countries to download apps from other countries and much more.

    • +1

      Atmos streaming

    • As someone who previously used a Chromecast with Google TV, Apple TV is so much nicer and much more responsive to use.

Chromecast with Google TV is good, but I wouldn't say great.

      • All good even as android user?

No unknown source installations I'm guessing as well?

        • +1

Yeah, you can sideload but not permanently without having a developer license or other means. Only app you could argue is glaringly missing is Kodi, but Netflix/D+/Stan/Binge etc is all available, plus Plex of course.

I can't think of any inherent issues being an Android user unless you're relying on casting from apps.

    • Having used both, the ATV is better. Double the price better would depend on use case.
If just streaming and tendency to use the TV remote and OS then save the money.
If wanting to replace the TV OS and use the higher performance apps that you can get on the ATV then ATV definitely.

  • You can put Plex on these but note that it will natively run media in MP4. If your library is primarily in MKV the server will need to do a lot of transcoding while streaming. I’ve found it’s best to get media in MP4 to begin with and direct stream. Just depends on whether you share your library with other non-Apple friends, otherwise you’d be doing the same thing in the opposite direction.

Been using the apple+ app and a free trial sub from a PS5 so I don't think I need this ,
but I am surprised at how good the shows are on Apple+ .
They have spent tens of millions
on each series and you can see it in the productions.
Ted Lazzo was So funny and For all Mankind has really got going in the second season.
Don't know if this helps anyone , but as someone who doesn't pay for any subs , this is so much better than free to air tv ,
    movie quality tv productions
One of the biggest companies in the world and it shows.

    • +2

but as someone who doesn't pay for any subs

You should rotate through the other free trials as they come up. Most streaming services have a few shows with high production values

      • Yes , I watched Yellowstone on paramount+ , it was ok .
Find it hard to get into shows unless they have a theme that interests me.
        Any recommendations ?

        • +1

We kinda need to know what themes interest you.

          • @Astronaut Joe: Comedy - SciFi anything good really, the theme just helps when initially choosing something

        • +3

          Sure -

          Netflix

          • Dahmer
          • Dark
          • The OA
          • The Witcher
          • The Sandman
          • The Umbrella Academy
          • Alice in Borderland
          • Midnight Mass
          • Ash vs Evil Dead
          • Mindhunter
          • Altered Carbon

          Paramount+

          • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
          • Tokyo Vice

          Prime

          • Reacher
          • The Expanse
          • The Boys

          Apple TV

          • Foundation
          • WeCrashed

          Other

          • Only Murders In The Building
          • The Orville
          • +1

@ihfree: +1 for Succession on Binge & Tehran on Apple TV

            • @nang18: Cheers mate
              Tehran looks interesting
Will give it a shot while I have this sub.

          • @ihfree: Wow I had no idea there was a series based on Isaac Asimov's books .
Definitely going on the list along with WeCrashed
            Cheers

The Orville I thought would be funny , but I don't get this
            ' humour ' ?
I can see the writers think their being amusing maybe ,
but falling way short for me.

            • @beach bum: Asimov's books explored some big ideas over big timelines. They would have been very hard to directly translate to TV. If you have read the books, set your expectations accordingly.

Fair enough, Humour is subjective. If you are into science fiction, season 3 drops much of the comedy element.

              • @ihfree: Yes foundation is not my favourite of all of Asimov's books but anything by him is better than 99% of authors of his time.
Of course adaptations are an a condensed version of books, loosely based and cherry picked of ideas.
Luckily it's been many decades since I read this .

My little critique of the Orville is no reflection on your recommendation, just disappointed in a show that had so many elements that could have come together to be great , but it just fell flat , seemed like a parody of itself.
                Maybe it's gotten better,
                but they lost me .

            • @beach bum: appleTV+ version of foundation is vaguely like the book but heavily adapted to fit TV, and modernised.

I severely risk apostasy by suggesting I liked the ATV+ version more than the book. That almost never happens.

              • @entropysbane: Apostasy -loss of belief/principles
Good word , had to look that one up
I think your saying you liked it
                Thanks I think

                • @beach bum: It has religious connotations, which considering the fervour of Foundation series fans, is apropos.

  • +1

Anyone actually like the new remote? I got so used to the touchpad style controls of the old Apple TV remote, that when I tried the new one it felt clunky and not as smooth.

    • I much prefer the new remote, the tiny touchpad remote was god awful. I've got large hands so the new remote remote feels a bit more natural and not as "finicky" to use. That said I still hate using Kayo with the new remote, Kayo on Apple TV went all in on the Apple TV remote navigation options and trying to fast forward Kayo playback is a right pain, especially as Kayo doesn't resume playback where you left off for some bizarre reason.

    • I do… used both and find the new one just as smooth and having discreet buttons helps as well so you can essentially choose how to navigate

  • Can anyone confirm if the remote you get with it, is the siri remote? The picture they show right when you open the link, doesn't have the "microphone" / speak button. And under "buy now" it says "add an accessory -> 2021 Apple TV Siri Remote (2nd Generation)" for $79.

But when I scroll to the bottom, under "whats in the box", it does in fact say "siri remote".

    • Never mind, my dumb a$$ clicked through the pictures and can see the "microphone" button on the side of the remote included with the product.

I think the 2021 Apple TV Siri Remote (2nd Generation)" for $79 is just the newer version?

      • Yeah it’s the silver looking remote with power button at the top. Microphone button has moved to the side of the remote. it mimics using Apple TV remote app on the iPhone, as you would use power button to bring up Siri.

        • Thanks so much for the reply. Yes, true, power button brings up Siri. Thanks so much!

  • Thoughts on this vs Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k Max?

    • +3

      About $150

      • ATV is worth a fair bit more than a fire stick. Not sure if it is worth $150 more though.

        Definitely not worth $200 more.

    • I use the fire stick 4k Max and can't fault it. Don't know why you'd buy this instead of a fire stick though I've never tried apple tv.

      • I thought the same thing… until I tried the ATV4K. Whether it's $150 better than the Firestick will depend on your particular use case but I tried it once and never looked back.

  • Thanks OP, bought the 64GB one!

Here’s a list of some of the free streaming apps that I use on my Apple TV

UK - UKTV Play, All 4, itv Hub, My5, BBC iPlayer

    NZ - TVNZ+

US - tubi, Pluto TV, TLC go

AU - SBS On Demand, ABC iView

    • +1

How do you get access to the free streaming apps via your ATV?

I tried searching for all the above via the App Store app on my ATV but keep getting "No Results"

      • +1

You will have to create a separate Apple ID for each country and then sign in as a secondary profile on your Apple TV. You can use the same Australian mobile number.

  • I know its popular to crap on Apple in this part of the world but this product is so easy to use, my wife just likes it. The Shield was too clunky and hard for her to use, this works a treat.

During my uni days, i'd be very techy and use Plex etc. These days, i just pay for 2-3 streaming services and have all the content i can consume in one screen.

  • Why do u need the storage when it streams?

    • +1

Games (Apple Arcade), apps, music and photos.

  • +1

This can't do Kodi can it?
