Apple MagSafe Charger $51.30 (RRP $65) Delivered @ Amazon AU

The charger does not come with a power adapter. I notice in the Amazon specs it says Lightning connector, but that's wrong. As it says further down it's USB-C, so the 20W Apple charger below is ok. The MagSafe is 15W so a slight speed penalty paid for the convenience (over plugging the phone in).

Also available:

20W USB-C power adapter is $25.20 (RRP $29)

30W USB-C power adapter charger $59 (RRP $69)

The charger does not come with a power adapter.

    Of course it doesn't.

All these years later and I still do not understand this innovation. I'm paying for the benefit of aiming a magnet to attach onto another magnet, rather than aiming a cord to attach to a socket? Is that it? Am I missing something?

    • +8

      Do you use wireless charging?

      • -3

Personally, not much. However, I do understand why wireless charging would be great (if it could be as fast as corded charging). What I don't get is why Magsafe charging is better than corded charging.

          • No need to mess around to ensure the coils are aligned
          • In a car, you get a smaller mount
          • Detaches easily without the possibility of damaging the port
          • You often don't need faster charging - overnight, longer drives, etc
          • +4

@ihfree: When compared to standard Qi chargers, you also can use the phone while it charges similar to if you plug in a cable. With normal Qi desk chargers you’re more limited.

            • @Smigit: What’s the difference with a standard qi charger and a qi desk charger here? As in the ikea desk ones where it’s built into a specific position?

              • @[Deactivated]: In terms of iPhones standard Qi maxes out at 7.5w where MagSafe gets you 15w, so much faster. This 7.5w rate is an Apple limitation though so Android owners might see faster charging, but then MagSafes not relevant to them.

In terms of using the device while charging, it’s just a matter of the magnets keeping the charger connected so you can pick the phone up and use it more easily. Generally Qi chargers you just place the phone on a designated spot so you can’t pick the phone up freely and bumps etc might break the charge. You can still interact with the device when using Qi, but it’s more limited.

@ihfree: Is wireless charging less energy efficient than wired charging overnight?

            • @edfoo: It's less efficient - that's the price for convenience.

              • +1

@ihfree: I thought so, I will stick to wired charging.

                • @edfoo: its' better on your battery as you're slow/trickle charging rather than fast charging and leaving it plugged in/…

    • charging in a car or when charging port not working?

      • You don't need a magnetic contraption for that. What's wrong with simple wireless charging without magnets?

        • +1

In a car the magnets can hold the phone in a cradle too.

          • +1

@kubernetesxp: Yeah, I'll use a cable then. No need to buy a $50-60 single-purpose puck.

Btw, is the magnet really strong enough to hold the phone (ie. the larger iphone) in place in the car? Like, when hitting a bump/pothole? Or do you need a proper car holder anyway, not just something to attach this puck to the dashboard? (In case of a wireless charging car holder alignment shouldn't be an issue, right?).

            • +1

@pizzaguy: Yes, it does, I have one without the charging capability, but you need to have a magsafe specific case to have more grip to the magsafe car mount.

            • +1

@pizzaguy: Heaps of YouTube reviews on the various mounts suggest that it is strong enough

            • +1

@pizzaguy: It's Apple branded one hence the price, you can get plenty non branded on eBay for $10.
Yes the magnet is strong enough to hold your phone in place, but weak enough to be easily removed.

    • +1

      agree.

it's slower, and you're only paying for a slight increase in convenience. you just slap it on.

i can see wireless charging being worth it if you have a three in one dock for phone, airpods and watch, but that's it.

      • +1

cable will always be better. less heat, better battery in the long run.

        • +10

And cabled internet will always be better than mobile data. But here we are. Convenience pays off right?

          • -1

@onlinepred: Get that but MagSafe is corded charging except you guide the puck to the back of your phone.

Truly wireless charging would be incredible but it’s not what is on offer here.

            • @Tommybot: not sure if you've used magsafe but you hardly have to guide anything, it snaps on very easily. you can't plug a cable in with 1 hand but you can put it on a wireless charger with 1.

            • @Tommybot: And wifi requires a cable too, if you base it on that, nothing is truly wireless.

              • @onlinepred: Nothing is truly wireless but Bluetooth and Wifi are sufficiently wireless. The user is not anchored to a location. Magsafe charging is not.

                • -1

@Tommybot: Just need to plug the bluetooth receiver into a battery or power point. Wifi requires a power and cabled internet or a SIM. Technically there are cables going from the bluetooth receiver to a power source/main board.

            • @Tommybot: I suppose someone will have to invent that before they can sell it

    • +1

If you snag the cable walking past it doesn't wreck the phone port (more applicable to laptops).

Also if your eyesight is not great or its dark its easier (particularly dislike Micro-USB).

      • -5

Good points. You are right - I think magsafe charging is only useful for those with physical impairments.

      • More generally it just saves on wear and tear on the port which is only rated for a limited number of connect/disconnect cycles. I tend to keep my phones for a while and my last couple have had to be retired because the USB or lightning connector has failed.

    • +1

Same here. I've always thought wireless charging was about convenience of putting your phone on something without attaching.

This feels like plugging in a cable apart from a sole cable is smaller and cheaper.

    • Do you not rate having a cordless kettle; a cordless toothbrush charger? It's an improvement on Qi chargers, where it's possible to have your phone mis-aligned or to move it at some point overnight. Magsafe is much more reliable.

      • Yes but my view is the difference between Magsafe charging over USB charging feels so small. I was just wondering whether anybody feels different i.e. Magsafe charging is a game-changer or at least a dramatic improvement over what was available previously for a much smaller price.

    • I feel like this is apple preparing to remove the port once and for all.

  • +1
  • The charger does not come with a power adapter.

    So it won't charge then.

  • Buyer beware - the cable entry is especially weak and I had to repair mine with silicone to extend its life. I also have the Belkin one but dislike the thick cable.

  • I've got this for my bedside table - Anker Wireless Charger, PowerWave Pad, - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B081KRHZG1/ref=ppx_yo_d…

and this for my desk - Anker Fast Wireless Charger, 10W Wireless Charging Stand, Qi-Certified,
    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07DBXZZN3/ref=ppx_yo_d…

both work fine with my 11 pro which doesn't support MagSafe.

  • Recommend this one as alternative: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B09W9WWN7V/ref=ppx_yo_d…

Cheaper. Includes power charger and can also charge Apple Watch. Been using since July in the office and its working great.
