Still doesn't beat the 2x Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max deal for $69 during Prime Day

    • I still have 3 unsealed
      No more people buying it

      • +1

Can I get one off you?

  • +4

    Black Friday is coming…

    • -4

      What's the date?

      • +3

The date changes every year depending on when American Thanks Giving falls that year (which also varies as it’s the fourth Thursday of November).

Googling “Black Friday 2022” will tell you this year’s date.

      • +9

        Friday, 25 November

Prime Early Access Sale (aka Prime Day - Part 2) is starting tomorrow. I wonder if this is part of that promo.

With the Chromecast HD at $59. It's hard to say this is really better value

    • +1

I mean they're different products/ecosystems. For example, if someone presses your Ring doorbell… the video feed will instantly display on your TV via this firestick.

      • True guess if your full Alexa eco system

        • +1

Id rather Alexa amazon eco system then google tbh, google is insecure and can access your private stuff.

    • +16

Given this is the 4K Firestick, you should probably be comparing it with the price of the 4K Google TV w Chromecast, which is $99.

    • +3

      i find the remote better,

also seems to have better playback with jellyfin

easier to run retroarch with controllers with fire stick too

    • Good value for those who want 4K

  • +12

    Cease all electronic purchases.

    Black Friday is next month.

It's well known to be the best time to buy electronics.

    • +1

And Cyber Monday (albeit deals generally aren't as good)

  • +1

I bought one on Friday for $39, so hopefully it will repeat same price on black friday 25th Nov

Kayo needs native support for fire TV.

    • would be nice. I found side loading the APK on the 4k fire stick a pretty easy process. It all works including the icon which others seem to have trouble with.

      • Please share link?

used @Zakt72 and @kavie87 s info from here
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/704010

You need to turn on developer mode, and select install APK from unknown sources

Get the downloader app from appstore allow any permissoons.
In the url file type in 336298 and press go .
When it says something about unknown sources follow the instructions and allow it and come back to downloader and install the kayo app .and it works perfectly normal

          • @That Guy: Kudos for saying "turn on developer mode". So many people call it "hacking it" or "jailbreaking it" which is stupid since it's just turning on an offical setting.

      • Enable Dev mode, then just use the downloader App to install your APKs. Most then seem to self-update.
        Main additional Apps I use are;
        - Stube (You Tube Adblocker with inbuilt SponsorBlock)
        - TVmate (IPTV Player for watching Live TV)

Superfast device, main downside is they have very limited storage, so you need to delete unwanted apps\files.

    • We need binge on fire tv.

I bought one of these at the start of the year, (JB Hifi $49 iirc), but haven't got around to setting it up yet. Mostly just wanted to watch my ripped DVDs and personal video recordings (encoded in HEVC 10-bit) as my laptop is old and doesn't support 10-bit (neither does my TV though) so it's inefficient power consumption. But have just stuck with using my laptop and a HDMI cable.
I'm even told watching YouTube incurs ads, which I can block on my laptop.

Anybody have any good guides to getting started and blocking ads and what kind of hard drive or media server I would need to conect, please?

    • There are many types of configurations, Plex for TV is completely free to use and very user friendly at the beginer level.

Any cheap computer from fusetechau will handle 1080p transcoding for at least 2-3 screens simultaneously. If you don't need too much storage you can connect an external to one of these. The main downside to externals is they annoying power saving modes that mess with Plex.

A NAS box is too expensive, my personal recommendation would be to consider building a mini tower that can fit at least 3 Hard Drives & & SSD/NVMe, but that could be more than you may want to spend early on.

Laptop plugged into TV used to be great, but in the streaming era, all the major services, including Netflix, Prime, Disney+, etc all have worse video quality in browsers (and their windows apps too usually) than they have in Fire TV 4k (and equivalents like android TV, Chromecast, and native TV apps).

As usual it's crappy DRM insisted on by big studios that's to blame.

If you want to watch any of these services in anything even halfway approaching old Blu-ray quality, let alone proper 4k with high bit rate, you need one of these. A PC won't do.

      • Thry didn't say anything about wanting to use streaming services.

        Thanks for the feedback, GandalfTheCheap.

    • Install SmartTubeNext as an alternative YouTube client for ad-free viewing. Even uses data from the SponsorBlock project to skip intros/outros/calls-to-action/self-promotion etc.

      • Thanks, I'll look into that.

Fire Stick 4K Max is significantly more powerful than the rest of the Android based TV devices, UI kinda sucks compared to Google TV, but it's never hitched once.

  • Can someone confirm if you can install Nordvpn on this and watch netflix without geo blocking?

  • Note that these can be used as mesh wifi extender nodes which is a nice bonus!

    • No idea why someone would downvote this. I think it is a great extra feature for something like the dot with clock that will be in bedrooms anyway as an alarm clock. Needs an Eero router to participate with. Gen 5 from end of month and gen 4 (this sale) via an over the air update a little later.
