Presonus is a great brand. They recently released the new R80 v2 - it's fantastic.

3.5" woofer 80hz so you're not gonna get like… any bass at all

not that easy to integrate a subwoofer

    • +1

Yeah, but if you're buying 3.5" you're clearly not in the market for that sub range, and probably have no idea about frequency ranges in general, so wouldn't notice what you're missing out of.

I bought these speakers and paired them with a $200 Voll sub and they are amazing. I have them on my desk for music production (hobby not pro) so I didn't want huge fat monitors, so small speakers plus cheap sub is the perfect combo for me.

(The Voll sub was out of stock last time I looked though, with more stock "due in October".)

If you got a bigger set eg E4.5 or E5 you get very little additional range and probably still need a sub. No way I'm chucking monitors with 8" drivers on my desk!

      • just curious, but where do you position your sub?

        • Just on the floor in the corner, next to my desk. I knew the theory but it was still surprising to me that I couldn't tell it wasn't centred with the rest of the music.

          • @tophorus: How about acoustic treatment for the room?

            • @dottjt: Haha nope, unless you count a bed and some drapes!

To be fair these are near-field monitors not home theatre speakers, so you're meant to be sitting pretty close. In general the sound reaches your ears directly well before any reflections off the surfaces of the room.

Was going to buy these but went with the Edifier MR4 instead - Havent been disappointed as I was worried these might be a little "thin"…not to say the MR4 are bass monsters or anything lol

    • I'm very happy with my MR4's…

    • Probably the amp is better quality on the Presonus. I personally love them and find they are plenty kick for general purpose on the PC, including casual music.

  • Love the brand - I nearly bought these but went for the Eris E5's instead, bigger, bassier, louder, etc …

    • I’m in the middle with the E4.5s. They’re probably the best size for the space I have, absolutely love them.

looks neat, shame it doesn't have a sub-out. this would probably be unbeatable value paired with a Voll V8

    • +3

I just wired my sub to the input terminals on one speaker. According to the Voll guy I spoke to, most mixes centre the low frequencies anyway because humans can't hear direction of really low sounds, so it doesn't really matter if it's run off only one channel. So far I haven't come across a track where that doesn't stack up.

  • Wish I’ve waited longer. Just ordered last week for 189.

Can anyone recommend good budget speakers/soundbar that I can use with an LG smart TV in a big living area we can barely hear the sound coming out of the TV. Thanks

    • probably going to get downvoted, but the kogan 5.1 seems to have decent reviews…

For those wondering about adding a sub (and disappointed that there's no sub output), there's an official Presonus sub which works with these. You daisy chain the signal. Into the sub, then out to the speakers.

    • How would you connect the sub to these speakers? I looked at both the I/O and I can't figure it out.

      • +2

You take output from the sub, (which probably has a built in high pass filter) and feed it into these speakers. Not every sub supports that option, unfortunately.

      • you connect to your sub first, then from sub to both speakers.

  • Go for the 4.5 BT if they fit in the space and budget, they sound good for the money. I think these will be a bit limited in the bass for most.

One of the best brands and speakers I’ve had

  • +4

I've got these. Had them about three years. This is a steal of a deal. That's what I paid 3 years ago, and it was a good deal then. Love them. Perfect for my PC study size. Buy them for the space you intend to fit them. The 3.5s were fine for my use with my U-Phoria UMC204HD AI. Great with keyboard as well. Might just be baby Eris, but don't underestimate the bass on them. Much better than the Edifiers. Presonus. Says all. Wouldn't hesitate to by the brand or these again.

  • Got Edifier 1700BT for $150 to listen to music while working. Planning to use Bluetooth connectivity for playing music.

    How is this in comparison?

    • +2

This are studio monitors from a company that specialises in audio production, so in general you'll get a flatter, more accurate response from them than the Edifiers, which are generally tuned to be more "pleasing" but less accurate.

These PreSonus ones will show up flaws in a mix, though. That's kind of the point of them. But in your case the Edifiers might be more forgiving.

I use mine (E3.5BT) to listen to music all the time and don't have an issue with the less forgiving sound, personally.

      • +1

Thanks for the response. I don’t have intend to. play high quality audio. So will stick to Edifier then.

  • had those, they are great for the price especially BT feature for some versatility.
recently got the aiyima T9 tube amp and start my passive speaker journey, since I noticed there are so many cheap passive speakers on second hand market.
paired with an old sub and I am loving it, the whole set up costs about the same for me.
