Free Trolley Token - Ask at Service Desk @ Coles

2610

I was at my local Coles last night and didn't have a coin to unlock a trolley. Usually one of the attendants has a tool to unlock the trolley, however they told me to go to the Service Desk counter and obtain a free token. Aldi charges $0.99 for this and this is free and reusable that can be attached to a keychain, so I think this is worth sharing with the community.

      • Now you can get a free trolley token just before shopping and cart it home?

Check out cart narcs channel on youtube, hilarious.

my local woolies also gave me one when I asked to break a note for the trolley. it's real handy

  • Buy one of these:- https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/133783061308

$4 for four of them, no token, unlock any trolly and no hassles. Works like a charm…

    • +1

4 x $1 coins will also unlock any trolley with no hassles though I grant you that these look like they can attach to a keyring.

      • get the 4x$2 coin sizes for profit?

      • Difference is you need to return the trolley to get your coin back whereas you can insert the key to unlock and remove it immediately, no need to return the trolley.

        • Plus you can unlock a few extra trolleys while you are there to help out the next few people

    • +1

I have one. It does not always work especially to newer lock.

      • Really? I find mine flawless, great purchase.

  • I thought it's always been free at woolies

  • +1

I didn't even know this was a thing, I'll try asking the front service desk next time. I've seen some people steal trolleys even when they were coin operated

    • let us know how u go

the trolley as scrap metal must be mroe than $2or

      • When you spend nothing and you get money for a trolley. You can see why the feeble minded crooks think they are onto a winning formula to get rich.

I went to a friend of a friend's and they had a coles trolley they cut and made into a bbq…

        • I wouldn't expect anything less of your…err, acquaintances 😉

My biggest beef with these coin locks is when friends or relatives who don't normally shop (or don't have these locks in their areas) come and help. I'm loading the bags into the boot so to be helpful they put the trolley away. Then they come back and hop in the car - I say 'did you get my $1 back?" and either get a blank look in response or get told 'it's only $1'.

Needless to say they, aren't on ozbargain.

    • +4

      get told 'it's only $1'.

      They are walking home.

    • Stop giving these people a ride.

  • When I moved into my new place there was a stack of maybe 20 shopping baskets from Aldi, Coles and Woolies… why waste 15 cents I guess.

  • +1

I don't get the point of the locks of they're giving these out for free

    • Well the locks did serve a purpose. Now its useless since they are giving away the keys to open them.

  • +1

I hope someone gets the tool and frees all the enslaved trolleys.

  • +1

The fancier version, works for both Woolies/Coles and Aldi trolleys.

    https://www.fosko.com.au/trolley-keys

    $16 for 6, $12 for 4, $5 for 1, free post.

    • interesting to see aldi is squared in shape.. explain how my coin still fits

    • Second this recommendation, my Fosko key has been going strong for around 6 years now. I do generally return trolleys, but it is nice not having to worry about getting my coin/token back.

I was at Coles getting a trolley but I had no coins and this nice filo guy getting a trolley had a lock picker on his keychain and unlocked one for me. Where can I get this?

    • +2

Apparently you ask the service desk at coles.

    • +4

Literally the post just above yours. Bro….

Legit been like this at my store for 5 years, it's such a dumb thing since people will just lie and say they don't have money and get these free every single time anyways just to dump trollies on the street. Defeats the purpose of the coin lock.

    • OK, so you have to purport to have no money to buy a token and they'll give you one? And otherwise they'll say you have to buy it?

      • +1

No they are always free and people know that

    • say they don't have money and get these free every single time anyways just to dump trollies on the street

Coin locks only stop honest people doing things spare of the moment. It doesn't stop people who are "experts" at doing bad things.

I got a tool for $1 on eBay that unlocks trolleys. I'm always helping out the seniors at Aldi. They're really thankful. Feels good to help.

  • +1

Thanks - I used to pay $2 for my shopping trolleys.

  • Can I get CashRewards ?

  • Thought it was Darth Vader photo for a while there

  • Woolies would give you one for free as well?

  • Wtf coles the Glen says you need to give a $2 donation for the trolley token.

    • They probably are happy to give a couple away every now and then, but you are probably the n-th person to ask today.

  • My life is now complete….

  • +1

Since Coles is next to Aldi where I am and doesn’t use coins, we all grab a Coles trolley outside the store and use it at Aldi. I like the half trolleys at coles anyway

  • I have never been to a Coles or Wolies which need a coin to unlock a trolly, where is this ?

  • +1

I find 2 x 5 cent coins does the trick in place of a $2.

  • Had to ask for this in the past. Sometimes it's free. Sometimes it's not. Depends who you get at the front service desk.

  • +1

who cares whether the trolleys have locks or not…

people just need to return them to the shop or trolley bay rather the next most convenient space they find.

I like it when you can see someone is thinking of just leaving the trolley behind and spots me looking at them… and decides to wheel it another 5 metres to the closest trolley bay.

  • I upvoted but I know I'm too much of a chicken to ask for one myself. But good to know it's an option if a coinless me has a trolley emergency.

    • +1

I'm pretty sure you can ask the staff to unlock it for you if you don't have any coins.

If you have (or know someone who has) a 3D printer.

    • Looks nicer than trolley keys on eBay.

Shop at nicer Coles no locks.

  • +1

I have asked at a few stores, never been given one.

  • Wait trolley locks are a thing still? Haven't seen those since Kmart had them 15+ years ago.

    • it depends which suburb you live. If you live in higher criminal rate suburb, I guarantee they will have lock in all the supermarkets

    • Yep.

Some local councils (and the ACT government) require retailers to ensure shopping trolleys do not leave their shopping precinct.

Purity had trolley locks many many years ago on their trolleys and those took 20c coins. I spotted one such trolley at the Glenorchy tip a while ago, which was a blast from the past…

      • Glenorchy is exactly where I thought I saw them last ages ago. That's a pretty bogan area so Taro would be right.

  • I just 3d printed mine
    Never bothered with it since

  • These are very handy to unlock a trolley connected to a trolley with actual money in it

  • +1

What! My local Coles asked me to pay $1 for this, recently!

  • For the more technically minded, just 3d print these.
