The first decent deal on 20TB HDD. Dispite the title says 8TB, the technical details section shows it's 20TB and the ASIN (Amazon Standard Numer) B09TYZCN61 which correspond to Amazon UK's WD 20TB Elements HDD listing.

  • Is this the model with the 2 white label 10tb reds inside ?

  • +5

Tempting but will wait until Black Friday. Held out this long. Hopefully my hardware holds on too…

Finally, 4K HDR linux pr0n distros

    • Why stop there when you can get 3d linux distros

  • I'd be wary of any buying 20tb models, as they could be SMR.

The bare drive could be a WD Gold 20TB, which is CMR, or a Ultrastar DC HC650 20TB, which is SMR.

    • Hmm, there is a chance that it's not a HC650,

"HC650 (20TB) is ePMR SMR but it's host-managed SMR, so they probably can't use it for WD Elements/Easystore 20TB. I think they'll use another of their 20TB drives, it's ePMR CMR with OptiNAND:"

At this price it's almost certainly SMR. If you're using the drives as a NAS or to shuck the drives for a file server then IMO SMR is fine. Yes, performance isn't as good, but most people aren't buying cheap 20TB disks for performance.

Storage per $ is what counts, and this delivers on that.

      • SMR drives don't tend to last as long though even if you can live with the performance hit.

      • +2

Well, SMR drives are terrible in RAID. Source - personal experience. Never more. Similar to try using Crucial BX SSD for a boot drive.

        • +2

RAID1/10/5/6 where every write hits every disk, sure, not ideal. However RAID such as FlexRAID / UnRAID where only the parity disks are hit, it's not as bad. Again, personally I'd rather take the cost savings.

FWIW, I also have personal experience with 7 SMR disks in UnRAID that I've used for years, and haven't had an SMR fail, yet I've had many many non-SMR disks fail in the years before that. Yes, I know that doesn't prove anything for what others' experience will be, but I would say that it doesn't matter what type of disk you use, you should anticipate and plan for failures. RAID is not a backup, so if the data matters, have a backup.

        • I've got 8x8tb seagate SMR drives in RAID 6 array. Software raid on openmediavault.

My personal experience is it works perfectly fine, solid performance.

I have heard that mixing SMR and CMR is a bad idea for raid, but all my drives are SMR and for the price I got them all it was a good deal.

          • @rx8geek: SMR is fine for the most part, around 100meg/sec per drive but the performance can really start to tank when the drive gets full, the last 100gig or so it really takes a hard hit sub 50mb/sec and simetimes will sit at 0 while it rearranges data around.Dont think Id want to run it in a NAS tho

    • At least for the EasyStore drives they're CMR, I'm assuming Elements are using the same drive.

Does this have the annoying 5 second heartbeat click like the 18TB model?

    • +1

I get the feeling nearly every modern large drive has that due to Preemptive wear leveling (PWL)… it's annoying :(

      • :( Very annoying. Especially in a quiet room.

  • +2

Does it matter if the heading says 8TB but the description is 20TB?

    • +1

It's difficult to say. Maybe you'll be shipped an 8TB drive as listed in the heading, or maybe you'll get a 20TB drive as listed in the description. There are plenty of listing errors on Amazon, and I've received a few items over the years that were different to the listing and/or heading. I have been able to return them for a refund, though.

      • +3

Or may be the 18tb as the photo

  • Good price. $4.86/TB. Haven't been this low for a while

    • Think you messed up your decimal point lol

  • +10

The listing itself is concerning. The specs show 20TB, the title says 8TB, and the last photo on the ad says 18TB. What the hell is it exactly??

    • +1

good point, no idea what you are getting!

    • Exactly

    • The UK listing when you add .com.au instead of .co.uk brings you to this on the AU amazon site so this is definitely the 20tb HDD.

  • +1

With this Amazon lottery I think you are all going to get the 8GB drive as my best bet and considering other historical Amazon screwups

    • +1

The title says 8tb, I wouldn't risk it.

    • Can always return it if an 8TB rocks up..

  • With prior experience from the whole GPU/CPU debacle, most likely it's the 20TB.

  • +2

If its the 8TB then the cost is $60.78 per TB. That is too high a price.
If its 20 then the cost is $24.21 per TB. This is a very good price.

I find that $32-34 is the minimum good price for 1TB. Anything under this is even better.

    • +2

$32-34 is the minimum good price for 1TB
      Really?

      • Yes. I have been looking at prices and worked out the average (for the moment) to be this figure. If its lower then it is worth considering.
I would expect the average to drop even more over time.

  • Need to buy this dam

  • Need to know definitively if cmr or smr

  • I remember my first one of these, it was a 1TB, I thought I was king of the storage. Now it doesn't hold my MP3z

  • My first hdd was a mfm 20mb seagate 😮 in 1990

    • +2

Did you run stacker on that 😀

      • I think I still have my Stacker for OS/2 somewhere in the cupboard.

      • nope but i did have to upgrade the 640k ram to 1mb just to play wing commander 1

        • It was worth it.

      • MS Double Space! lol

  • +2

    $411.08 for the 18TB - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08KY32HFR

Limited to 1 drive only tho.

    $389.75 for the 16TB - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08KY4P7L5

Not as good per TB but might be useful for some.

  • really good deal…usually i'd jump at it. but i think i'm going to hold out to black friday

  • I can't wait for Black Friday. Need… more… space…!!

  • Are these actually shuckable? they do have the SATA interface instead of the USB one inbuilt right?

  • +1

Received my drive. Can confirm that it is indeed the 20TB drive from the UK listing. Have not shucked it yet, doing a disk scan prior to opening it up.

CrystalDiskInfo confirms this drive is a WD200EDGZ, as per here:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/up2lki/wd_easy…

Appears to be helium filled CMR drive at 7200RPM.

    • +1

Amazon also corrected the listing recently so no more references to 8TB

  • $530.83 now for anyone interested.

They also fixed the Amazon Product listing to show it 20TB now.

  • $475.42
