Just port the number to a $2 sim.

      Maybe Optus is into this.

      • Thanks, Done! How long does it take too Port?

        • FYI, Optus rejected the port at first. I had to tell them I had no reception inside my house (which is true, would you believe, lol). Successfully ported over now. Optus said Harvey Norman accounts manager will contact me in returning the voucher and the phone? Can they do that?

          • @Daniellib: The person probably had no idea. The phone is a "gift" which comes has part of the contract, and the only thing you need to pay back is the termination fee which is maximum $828 plus any monthly fees.

      • -1

I'm ignorant on this, how or where do I get a $2 SIM.

          • @G-rig: Seems it doesn't actually exist in retail as it states for Optus you need a minimum top up value along with the SIM, well fine, $15 ain't that much as a one off to keep my number. But do you know how long can I still receive calls and messages after not topping up? I looked and couldn't see the answer from Optus. One website claimed 90 days another said 186 days.

            • @FabMan: I don't know.. what's wrong with a $2 Telstra Sim or $5 Aldi one? Officeworks would have something.

Or just just the Optus plan the phone comes with if you don't have a Sim /plan already?

              • +1

@G-rig: Well I have an 8 year old mobile number, it's one of those awesome numbers and I want to keep it, but this deal made me get a new number. I don't care who it is with, I just want to keep the number and get it back when I can.

Ideally I should have ported my number as soon as my old contract was up and I could have ported it in when this deal come up. Just didn't do it in time.

                • +1

@FabMan: Same, have had mine forever and wouldn't want to change, one of the early Optus ones :P
Should just get a 365 day boost sim - they are helpful on the chat.

  • +1

Scored one in Springvale, they upgraded me to the 256gb for extra $150 (pay the difference)

Shout-out to the guy who sold it to me, was already telling me about early termination and everything. Don't have stock for cases or screen protectors but apparently getting the Google ones in soon so could use the gift card when they come in

    • Was your sales guy the super friendly guy from Hong Kong? I forget his name but he was super good and explained everything upfront :)

      • yes I bought off him too. his name is Karzon

        • +1

That's it. Karzon is it. I haven't come across such a friendly and honest salesman at Hardly Normal for ages. God bless him.

          • @gadgetfreak28: He was nice. Although he was begging me not to cancel the plan haha

            • @ramona: He probably saw it in my eyes. Said you can cancel the plan if you really want to but it may affect your credit rating. I said I'll pay the cancellation fee and it should be fine. He wasn't too impressed with me :)

  • Can't believe I missed this deal. Is it likely to return?

  • +1

Hope it returns. Optus are trying to redeem themselves.

Can't believe I got this deal. $793.50 cancellation fee + 150 gc insane! Half price phone.

    • How did you get your invoice for quick?

      I'm waiting.

I used prepaid MasterCards, and got handed a 256GB for free. Basically under $600 all up!

      Any good wireless chargers?

      • No invoice yet. Canceled on 1st Nov. How soon was your invoice and how much?

Yeah you got the best deal no doubt!

I need a wireless charger myself. Don't know if it works with magnetic car mount plate inside case though.

        • I cancelled a few hours after I signed up, it was October sometime.

      • The only decent wireless charger is the Pixel Stand 2 which is expensive but it is worth the money. Charges the phone in under 2 hours which is what basically a wired fast charger does. All other no name wireless chargers will charge the Pixel 7/7pro painfully slow. Try to score a bargain buying from FB marketplace. I got mine for $100 and really happy with it. Saves the usb c port from getting damaged too :)

        • Yeah, I can't find them cheap used 🤣

My pixel 2 xl charges really quick, I can't believe how slow this charges compared…I know it's got a larger battery but yeah!

          • @[Deactivated]: Couldn't agree more. I came from an Oppo Find X2 pro which used to charge insanely fast and I'm not used to the Pixel phone charging so slow. Kind of happy with the pixel stand but deep down inside I'm hoping that they do a software tweak to make it charge faster (probably not going to happen but let's see).

            • @gadgetfreak28: I'll keep scouring marketplace for a stand :/

        • Apparently my old Spigen magnetic mount is not compatible with wireless charging so I won't bother. Don't mind plugging in.

With my Pixel 2 XL I usually slow charge at night to no more than 80% and still get through most days.

The 2XL has been an amazing phone. I don't really need the 7 pro in fact I haven't even opened it yet been too busy lol. Only got it cause it was too good of a deal to pass up! Got the 2XL for free on a 2yr $59 Telstra plan but had to stay on that plan.

          • @donnyb: You'll love the 7 Pro. I had the Pixel 2 XL years ago and this is such a significant upgrade. I wish the 7 Pro was a tad thinner, but besides that it is a beautiful phone. Find the time and set it up :)

          • @donnyb: Pixel 3xl was great, felt more premium than any since. The speakers are way better than any Pixel since. Still get too told and slow though, no security updates and rubbish battery from those screens eating it up. The hardware fingerprint scanners are 10x better, fkn annoying most of the time but thankfully face unlock works well enough during the day.

The pixel 7 good compromise, not too big or expensive.

  • The thumb print scanner never works in dark, (profanity) of a thing.

  • So my bill just came through for this.

I terminated the same day the phone plan got activated but I'm getting charged for the full first month?

    Has anyone experienced the same?

    Screenshot of bill:
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_vGfIEBw4ArQ3_KEYBSB1cnnigN…

    • Mine is the exact same early termination fee (828) plus $69 gift card voice plan 828 + 69 = 897

    • I had the same issue, they were trying to charge me for 26 days. I hopped on the live chat and after a bit of back and forth with the agent got the monthly charge waived. Ended up paying $828.

      • +1

Just contacted them, they also fully fully waived the $69. I tried to get them to waive the 828 but they didn't budge lol.

        • Cheap enough, why would they waive the cost of the phone.

      • I haven't received mine yet, but I cancelled 2 hours are signing up.

So I will hopefully only pay $828.

  • Did you guys receive the bill through email or through the My Optus website/app? I still have yet to receive anything from either one, anyone else still waiting for their bill to arrive?

    • I got mine yesterday $793.5 + $69. Just enjoy your phone, if you still don't get it for the next couple of weeks then you get yourself a free phone

      • I got two phones and cancelled both

        one was 828 + 66.77
        the other was 793.5 + 69

Not sure how they came up with those numbers and why they are different between the 2 plans, hopefully I can get the monthly charges waived on both.

  • Got the cancellation charges as the bill has been generated and it is not pro-rata plan costs for me. I cancelled hours after signing up and I have still been charged the full $69 for October. The final bill is $897 (828+69). Have to pay it off by 1st December.

    • Just go on chat, and see if they'll take it off.

I cancelled within 2 hours, didn't even touch the sim so I ain't gonna pay $69.

      • That's a good idea actually. Will try that tomorrow if chat is still open, otherwise on Monday and report back here. Cheers.

        • It's what I will be doing!

          • @[Deactivated]: I got a bad chat rep that said

"On the contract that you signed did you know that you need to pay a month in advance?

That's why sent you all the documents and you agree to it"

            when I challenged I got

"Yes I'm reading it now and it says that there's a month in advance"

So I gave up on him and will try some other time I guess. it was like 10 minutes between his replies so it was super tedious.

If anybody has some tips into talking them into waiving the fee let me know.

            • +1

@denserham: Just had a chat with an agent mentioning that I didn't touch the SIM card and that I cancelled on the same day, was able to waiver the 69 for the first month. Recommend trying again with another agent who can waiver the first month

      • -1

69 nothing, you signed up for a plan lol

        • +3

Plenty of people got it taken off, and it's still $69 which shouldn't be charged.

It's ozb mate, you're on the wrong forum if you like giving away $69 to Optus.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah just the risk you run with those tricks and lot of effort stuffing around. Should be able to cancel if you get pro-rated refund for the month.

Guess most people banking on cancelling and paying the fee would already have a cheap Sim.

It's the type of Forum where some people were expecting to get the whole Early termination fee reimbursed and get the phone for free though.

            • @G-rig: Well it seems everyone has had it refunded but 1? I'm not sure if they said something special.

No one has commented yet, but maybe luck of the draw who you get on chat.

To be fair, they mentioned cancelling right away.

However they're not clear if it is cancelled that day, or 2 weeks later.

If they charge you the month, you should be able to use the sim for a month and be told that.

Telling you they'll cancel, charging you a month and you not being able to use the sim is surely wrong.

  • Got an invoice in my email for $897.00, will go on chat tomorrow and try get out of the first monthly bill.

    • Mine came last week $866.95 but I got the $69 monthly fee removed on live chat no problem. Had to pay 2 days pro-rated $4.45 + $793.50 early termination = $797.95 total.

Optus seem to be going out of their way to keep customers happy atm. Wonder why?

Although I am still with Optus for NBN

      • I'm happy to pay 1 day pro rata, but a whole month is insane to me.

        Hopefully get it off tomorrow.

Why's your invoice less? I don't get it.

        • The invoice should be itemized so you can see what makes up the total. There's an extra $30 on there for something

ok it's $34.50 extra that's half a month. Try and get both taken off

  • Do people ring up to pay, if using pre-paid MasterCard? I can't do it online.

What are people saying to do this through chat? I got an idiot.

"Thank you for confirming but since I was not able to see the bill you need to process it to our financial team you can call them to 1300 303 509"

    • On My Account -> Pay My Bill page on the website you can "Change payment amount" and enter new card details

      https://www.optus.com.au/my-account/pay-my-bill

Did they remove the $69 charge?

      • I want to pay with multiple $250 cards tho, not a single card.

No, he told me I have to call and speak to the financial department?

They didn't have an answer for me, so I think he was palming me off.

I stated that I should have been told I would be charged for a full month so I could have made use of the SIM, other than telling me I would be charged $828 etc

        • You can add a new card for each payment of $250. Just gotta do it 4 times I guess.

          • @donnyb: I'll check, thank you

        • I was able to pay with multiple prepaid mastercards just by clicking the Pay bills icon on the optus.com.au front page and entering my account number, but it did seem to throttle me and I needed to wait 15 or so minutes between payments which was odd but after each payment I could instantly see it reflected in my amount owing on my account.

  • I got someone new on chat, they checked my account and confirmed I cancelled same day and refunded me the month charge.

    $828! Thank you!

  • It hasn't updated yet, but it may take a few days.

Just keep trying til you get someone else, that first person tried to palm me off!

  • Recieved the invoice on Wednesday 23/11, and was charged $897.00.
Went onto the chat function on the Optus website today, and three hours and three different people later, Optus agreed to waive the $69 monthly charge without being explicitly requested. All I did was question why I had a $69 fee on the bill despite cancelling on the same day, and that I was under the impression that it was a pro-rata rate, so I guess how easy/difficult it is dependent on the luck of the draw.

    • Geez, lot of effort and resistance there..

  • +1

After 6 agents and about 7-8 hours worth of back and forth, I got the $69 waived off the final bill and paid $828 using BPAY. I almost gave up but then kept thinking my fellow Ozbargainers wouldn't be proud of me if I gave up so easily. All done now :)

    • Ha, guess you become commited to the challenge, $69 for 7-8h Work isn't great.

      • +1

I know but I kept thinking it is also about the right thing and I'm not paying for something I didn't use. Ethics and morals started to cross my mind and kept me motivated enough to keep fighting. Sense of relief now that I don't owe any money to Optus anymore :)

        • Yeah it's one of those annoying things..
Still glad I went with the JB hi-fi deal, a lot less stuffing around.

          • @G-rig: I tried to get on the JB deal but didn't have any spare phone lying around to trade in, otherwise that was a much better proposition.

            • @gadgetfreak28: Should clarify I got the pixel 7 so it was a bit better deal. I actually traded in the pixel 5 to get the $220 discount but ended up deciding to sell privately for $350 (SquareTrade up were nice enough to ship back for free and simply charged me $220). All up only cost a couple of hundred to upgrade, no need to spend too much.

              • @G-rig: That's a cracking deal. I loved the pixel 5. Was a great phone. I really needed a good camera otherwise would have gotten the 7 instead of the 7 pro as well.

    • webchat or phone? I am hitting brick walls.

      • It was all through chat but you have to keep calm and keep pushing. I got knocked back like 4 times before they finally agreed to waive the $69 charge off. Make sure you get transferred to the retention team (if I can remember their name right).

        • +1

I tried webchat and got knocked back,
then phonecall and got told to talk to harvey norman over and over,
then chat in the app I was able to get it straight away no hassle.

          • @denserham: Well done. They are extremely unpredictable when it comes to customer service etc. Good that you got it at least.

  • Better off price matching Telstra deals usually, JB's or officeworks.. (officeworks price beat currently $711).

Not long before these phones are $700-800.
