Another decent UGREEN deal.

Option 1 (main deal): The cable provided is USB-C to USB-C. This enclosure uses an ASM1153E chip

Option 2 (an alternative): for those requiring old fashion tech, they have a USB-C to USB-A option is also available for $16.49 with similar specs, but with a ASM235CM Chip.

Both enclosures come with an auto sleep function (after inactivity for 15min) and with a max capacity of ‎10TB. Both enclosures are tool free and UGREEN seems to have a good rep with the community.

You could also pair it with a Kingston SSD 480GB for $48 for a very cheap solid state external drive, that would be fine for media use (movies, TV series etc) or a drive for the kids

is there much point to buying this + an internal SSD, over a dedicated external SSD?

    • You can swap your ssd anytime and upgrade to new sizes without making waste?

      • However by the time you want to upgrade your SSD to a new size, you will probably want to buy a new enclosure with newer tech.

USB Type C isn't gonna change for 10yrs Now that EU has made it a standard for devices
There's never gonna be a sata 4 as m.2/nvme is the new standard and anything else will be PCIE based as we continue increasing PCIE bandwidth

So there's no newer tech other than the drive itself increasing in capacity

If anything you'll be buying NVME enclosures in future

      • i don't swap, i just buy another, larger size if necessary, and keep both.

Not really. I think the main use case for these enclosures would be people repurposing SSDs from older systems.
I don't think you would consider one of these over a dedicated SSD as there isn't a big enough price difference, the performance of dedicated drives is better, and they are much more compact.

      • I agree. It's especially for those who had their old laptop die but salvaged its 2.5" HDD/SSD for use with their new laptop.

    • Cost is also a factor. Larger capacity 2.5" internal ssd drives are usually a lot cheaper than portable ones. For example you can find a 2TB 2.5" ssd for under $200 but a portable drive will cost over $300

  • I purchased 2 of these u-green enclosures and put in a 1TB laptop hard drive into each one. Now when I connect them to my desktop, I have a peculiar problem of the desktop entering into an endless reboot hell. Just keeps restarting as long as this external hard-drive is plugged in.

I am able to access the files on these drives, it just that the desktop starts rebooting as soon as I leave it unattended for a few mins.

I have several other external harddrives and SSD's which were purchased as external harddrives (as opposed to putting a internal harddrive into an external enclosure)- none of them give this reboot issue with my desktop.

Anyone else seen such issues ?

    • Are the HDs in the enclosures getting enough power? Test by plugging them into computer via a powered hub, if problem goes away then they weren't getting enough power.

    • look at your error logs/event viewer and you should be able to see what's happening, then start looking for some advice based on that.

And which is better? ASM1153E ASM235CM

    • +2

Looks like they are very similar from the spec sheets.

ASM235CM is the newer chip of the two.

ASM235CM is the latest generation of ASMedia’s single chip solution, bridging the USB3.2 Gen2x1 to Serial ATA host interface with highly integrated SuperSpeedPlus, SuperSpeed, High Speed, SATA 1.5/3.0/6.0 Gbps ASMedia self-designed PHYs as well as built-in CC logic circuit enabling reversible USB cable orientation and direction. Along with excellent compatibility with USB3.2 hosts and SATA devices, ASM235CM utilizes advanced process technology to optimize the chip power consumption.

ASM1153E is the ASMedia third generation single chip solution, bridging the USB3.2 Gen1 to Serial SATA host interface with highly integrated SuperSpeed USB3.2 Gen1, High Speed USB2.0 and SATA1.5/3.0/6.0 Gbps ASMedia self -designed PHYs. Along with excellent compatibility with USB3.2 host and SATA device, ASM1153E uses advanced process technology to optimize the chip power consumption. Furthermore, it is also pit-to-pin backward compatible with existing ASM1053.

  • Weird but option 1 is actually the older model from doing a little bit of research and option 2 is the newer Version just supplied with a different cable for some weird reason

  • So how much faster in % would you expect from this enclosure compared to say the standard USB 3.0 (Orico comes to mind) using the exact same drive [SSD or HDD]

  • I want to build an ext drive. Is it better to use ssd or hdd? Heard hdd is safer for drives you only touch a little every month or 2. But portable hdd always came with the crap old micro usb 3 plugs.
