I just bought one from JBHifi yesterday for $1273 :( Is there a way to get them to refund the difference? Can't believe I missed this by a day.

    • You can return it to JB if box is not opened.

      • +40

please also return your ozbargain badge while you are at it

      • +1

        Box is opened :(

        • does the jbhifi receipt have serial number on it? if it doesn't buy the exact one from Microsoft ebay, when it arrives, return it with the jbhifi receipt to jbhifi.

          • @wtfnodeal: Can't do that if the box has anything non-jb related on it because they can tell

    • Being Ebay Plus only, they most likely wont do it. Maybe see if you can return it, make some excuse?

    • I don't think they do with online, just bricks and mortar, you could always give them a call just in case.

      • It doesn't matter online or offline. U can contact the store u bought from and they will provide u with a digital reciept. Give that to them and they will refund it for u afaik

    • +1

There's a return period. See this

      • Bought from a store in person. Unfortunately box has been opened.

        • +1

Try contacting them if u still have all the packaging, see if they can refund u for changing ur mind. But ur best bet might be store credit at best

    • +2

Buy it and return the sealed one to jb

      • +2

Don't they check the serial number during a return?

        • +1

No they don't but that has to be bought from JB too because JB usually sticks some labels and stickers like their courier label on it so they can tell if it's a jb unit or not. Get them to match the eBay plus price they do that if you can show them you have access to that price. Then take this new unit home and let the dust settle for a few days. Then return it but this time using your first unit's invoice and get your 1273 bucks back

          • +1

@Rimas: Tried that, they said "we do not match ebay prices period."

    • +1

Get them to beat eBay If you can and buy a new unit take it home and then return it instead of your first unit to get a refund of 12xx

    • Buy from eBay and return the Ebay product to JbHifi

Really want the Pro 7+ deal back!!

  • +2

Screw it, grabbing the 16GB ram version, I've been waiting for this deal, woohoo :)

    • +5

That's Apple RAM pricing. $200 for an extra 8GB! You can get 8GB DIMM's for under $40. Daylight robbery. I wouldn't be buying it just on principal… but then again, if I had strong pincipals I probably wouldn't be able to buy anything. except soaps from the local market.

      • +2

        But the RAM isn’t upgradable

        • That was exactly @wardrop's point. Because it is non-upgradable and 8GB of RAM for Windows is not gonna be enough for anything slightly intensive or multi-tasking so people would usually opt for the 16GB version which cost $200 more. If the RAM was upgradable it would have been a different story.

          • @Grey 13: I edit videos and audio using 16GB on the Surface Laptop 3 using Adobe Premiere and ProTools and it works perfectly fine.

            • +2

@SimAus007: Yup agreed. All modern laptop should be equipped with minimum 16GB of RAM tbh.

  • +1

I also ordered one of the $1,273 models off ebay yesterday just using the 5% off voucher….. now I could have saved another $120+ grrrrr!

Already have tracking number and on its way to me. Oh well. Is what it is.

    • I feel your pain brother :(

    • +1

buy another and return the first

      • I believe buyer pays return costs and by the time I've gone through the hassle of dealing with that and the post office my time would have been better spent working and recovering my loss that way.

  • Looks to be 15% (17% off with ebay plus) off other options also, such as the 15" models, if you look at the Microsoft ebay store.

  • Paid $1358 through Microsoft in August for the 16GB - dammit

  • +1

I am going to return the one purchased from JB HIFI (box unopened) last Tuesday and purchase the same one from ebay today…..Yeah!! Save more than $200. Thanks

    • +1

Lucky! How do you not open the box of a brand new laptop for days? I open it as soon as I get home can't contain my excitment

      • +3

I buy lots of stuff and never open it.

I'm shocking! I buy tech items and even after a year I haven't used a new shaver 🤣

I got so many clothes with tags on from sales.

        Hopeless

        • +3

I'm with you. Sometimes I feel the urge to buy something and I can't resist it so I just go and buy it but do not open it for a few days to let myself decide if I really need that thing. Interestingly, a lot of times I find myself returning it because it was just a fake need my mind was cheating me into and as soon as I buy it the urge goes away! May be I should go see a shrink!

          • @Rimas: I forget to return often :/

      • I buy stuff when on special that I don't need at the time. I haven't even opened my 18tb TB hard drive and i bought it 3 months ago.

  • 3% cashback on giftcards from shopback

  • For those interested, 2 x points per dollar if going via the Velocity store.

    • +1

      Just bought this colour!! YEAH!

      • +1

Any truth that the full metal ones are more prone to screen cracks compared to the velour keyboard?

        • Nope, that was a rumour when they first released the Laptop 3 but there was never any evidence of it, then that story was put to rest a long time ago, this is the first I've heard it mentioned since then.

          • @SimAus007: Thanks for the reply - was reading previous posts on OzB that someone brought it up

            • @orbital: Ahh, gotcha, I didn't see that :)

            • @orbital: I have had 2x 15 inch Surface Laptop 4s and both has developed hairline cracks in the screen for no obvious reason. I cant deny that maybe they received a slight knock whilst inside my work bag, but even then its a bit fragile for them to do so.

My first one bricked for an unrelated reason, so they sent a new one without a crack no issues. That one too now has a similar crack.

That being said, they have been bately noticeable and i dont really care. Would wtill recommend.

      • I think the Sandstone one is kinda sexy :)

  • Can you use discounted gift eBay gift cards for purchases like this?

    • you can

  • Dang, just got it for $960 on Friday.

  • Is it ok to use it as a desktop

    • Do you mean to connect it to an external monitor with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse? If so, yes, that's how I am using mine right now to type this.

  • -4

Does the Surface Laptop have enough clout at universities to pull out confidently like the Macbook, iPad Pro, and Surface Pro?

    • +4

Doesn't matter what size or type you have, the key is being confident when you pull it out. If they're staring at you when you do it, lock in and never break eye contact. Pull it out real slow.

    • Not sure what uni you are at, but plenty of students have Surface devices at Melbourne University, amongst other laptops that are not Apple branded.

      • It wasn't a serious comment but I didn't only mention Apple devices, I mentioned the Surface Pro too :)

I do see a lot of Surface Pro (tablet with keyboard) but not as many Surface Laptop (traditional laptop)

  • Good price, already have Surface Pro 7 but I like laptop type more.

    • Surface pro are more lighter and portable.

      • +1

Yeah but couldn't put on lap.

        • yeh u can

          • @Homr: Not really like a laptop on lap.

            • @superforever: its fine

  • got it on Friday as well, still in transit. Ebay price protection doesnt work on items listed on their own site :P
Ebay said item cannot be canceled once dispatched. The only option is to return the item (once delivered) by filing a case and since I used GC, need to wait for refund to use the same cards for next purchase. :(
    Any other creative options ?

    • The deal have 9 days left but not sure if stock still available.

  • +2

I prefer the black model and have messaged the seller to see if they can reduce to the same price

    • Me too! The black is always more expensive for whatever reason :(

      • yea I prefer the full aluminium body

      • Because it doesn’t have an Alcantara keyboard

      • As mentioned above, the Black/Sandstone has a aluminum palm rest, whereas the Platinum/Ice Blue is Alcantara.

        • That explains it!

    • The black is VERY VERY nice, just make sure you have a soft cleaning cloth handy as it's a fingerprint magnet :)

  • Feeling some buyers regret. Got the HP from the recent officeworks deal.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/729176

I like that this one is smaller.

    • +1

Have you opened it? Can always return it :)
That HP also has a 1920 x 1080 screen, which is on the way out with laptops now.
Still a great laptop, however :)

      • Opened and used for a few days unfortunately

        • I'd check their return policy. May still be able to return it within 30 days if it doesn't have any damage and you still have the box.

          • @SimAus007: Think I’ll need to stick with it. I used gift cards from Woolworths to buy it and will then be stuck with $1k of officeworks cards and nothing I want to buy. Good deal anyway as you said and got 10k Qantas points with it.
            Thanks!

  • Anyone know if the 8/256gb model with platinum has the metal palm rest or alcantera material

    • Alcantera

      • Thanks. Really after metal palm rest. Typical

  • I just got Surface Pro 8 tablet of JB for $1094 for the keyboard bundle. Pretty happy with it, it is a very nice tablet. Managed to get 60/120Hz dynamic refresh rate (need to get a generic Intel video driver for that) and already got a new SSD for it to upgrade storage…

IF you also want to save battery the only way now is to change BIOS setting to "battery limited" and it will stop charging at 50%. Not as good as Dell where you can actually set the higher limit to 80% but better than keeping it at 100%…

This laptop has the same screen. Almost want to grab the laptop as well to upgrade my old laptop so that I would have both.

    • how u get for $1094? and is it the 16gb version?

      • No, minimal version. Harvey Norman had it for 1094 without the keyboard, but they price matched that with the keyboard bundle.

  • Thanks OP. Was about to cop the R5/16GB/256GB SSD Sandstone version from HN today using gift cards and latitude CC (for $100 free GC), they wouldn't price match unfortunately but very happy with this as it works out nearly $100 cheaper even when accounting for free GC.

  • With surface laptop 5 announced and release soon, will these drop further in price??

  • 16gb platinum out of stock

  • Is ram soildered?

  • Is this laptop good for gaming mainly for android games? I used to own Surface Pro2 but it wasn't good for gaming due to overheating and the fan generates dust too quickly within a few months and was unable to clean it due to compact size. I'm not sure if it's the same with the laptop version since I'm unsure if the fan is well built for long term heat usage from gaming

  • I've gone for a 13" 256GBSSD 16GB RAM. I've been waiting for a further drop. Can't imagine they'll get a lot lower than this.

    • paying $200 more for extra 8gb ram is such a rip off

      • 8GB isn't enough for me so I don't really have a lot of choice. The price for the laptop itself is fine with me. I'd never pay $2k+ that they cost at launch.

  • While other Laptop 4's may drop in price. The new Laptop 5's are all Intel, so any that want AMD I believe won't get much of a drop.

  • Anyone recommend a docking station with network capability to go with this? (Presume via usb-c) My current laptop still uses a network cable :)

  • +3

I really don't like that carpet keyboard

  • +2

Don't buy a machine with 8GB RAM - go for the 16GB model.

I set up our new laptop yesterday (different model) which has Windows 11 and 16GB of RAM. With "everything" (except virus scanner and maybe some background apps) closed, it was still using 7.6GB of RAM.

    • +1

That doesn't necessarily mean that it would be using 7.6GB on an 8GB RAM laptop, operating systems are more complicated than that. I do agree with going the 16GB though.

      • I know; I have 8GB machines, which use less when booted up. But it is perhaps an indication of how much RAM Windows uses when able to, in order to run optimally.

        • My 32GB Desktop with Chrome tabs used 48% of ram, more ram will use more.

  • Thanks OP…Got one.

  • Had Surface Pro that overheated in the past. Never again …
