    meh only digital

    • +17

Yep, got excited for a minute there.

      • +2

How has anyone on this site not bought one of these things yet lmao

        • Because of you already have a last gen console, $750 is a lot for something that's barely an upgrade. It basically just plays the same old games with sometimes subtly better visuals. No rush to upgrade because of some amazing new game it can play, like consoles of yesteryear. (And they're still not always in stock for even that price).

          • +5

            @GandalfTheCheap:

No rush to upgrade because of some amazing new game it can play, like consoles of yesteryear.

That's the worst thing about consoles these days. I know I sound like an old fart but I miss being absolutely blown away by the improvement in graphics and games.

          • +6

@GandalfTheCheap: You must have a crap TV, I hope you at least bought it at a bargain.
XSX and PS5 are more than subtly superior - improved lighting, shadows, antialiasing, resolution, framerate (at comparable graphics settings). Current gen are noticeably superior to prior gen on the high end TVs I’ve seen them on. Actually, even on a 2008 Palsonic LCD the difference was significant.
‘Sometimes subtly better visuals’ hahahahahahaha. Wth?

          • +1

@GandalfTheCheap: Isn't that the exact same argument facing graphics cards, yet people still trip over themselves to lay out $1k+ to upgrade their cards for graphics that are 'barely an upgrade'

Happy to pay $750 now and not worry about if my system will meet requirements in a couple of years, let alone the 7+ that is usually the generational span of a console.

        • +2

'cos I picked up an XBox Series X through here at the start of the year!

I've had two opportunities to pull the trigger on a PS5 through had I chosen to.

        • +3

Maybe because there weren't any real bargain for these, mostly just normal RRP.

          • +2

@Tensun: I pity the fool who'd wait this long for a bargain that was never coming

            • +1

@dumdum2: really? this is Ozbargin we are talking about, are you sure you know what this website is about?

              • +1

@Tensun: You have to know when to bargain and when to buy. What bargain were you expecting on a product that retailers can't keep in stock for one day?

                • @dumdum2: since there aren't any must play title in PS5 yet, I'll wait… maybe for PS6 lol

                  • -1

@Tensun: Returnal would like a word.

                  • +1

@Tensun: Ratchet and Clank: Rift apart is great for its genre, and not playable away from PS5.

    • +2

      Some people love digital https://youtu.be/FxzBvqY5PP0

    • Apparently you'll be able to buy the Bluray unit separately in the near future.

  • +62

$649 at JB right now without extra controller. In stock. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/ps5-playstation-5-digital…

This bundle puts controller cost at $99. Don't think this is a good deal.

    • +2

      The real MVP

    • Yes, I did this last week after trading in our PS4 at EB for more than I bought it for new and selling the PS3 at Cashies. Really enjoying it so far!

      • +1

How much did EB give you for PS4 out of interest?

        • +2

$275 for a PS4 Slim, plus another $100+ for a handful of games and an extra controller. $140 for the PS3, controllers and games at Cashies. The PS5 ended up costing me $125 :)

          • +2

@akerr: $275 for a Slim sounds like really good trade-in value.

            • +4

@FireRunner: Yeah, I looked it up and I bought it from Big W for $259 for it 4 years ago! The EB Games trade-in deal (they put the money straight on my debit card).

              • @akerr: Wow those are good rates. Tempting, I could get $345 for my PS4 Pro. Probably more than what I could get selling second hand with none of the hassle

                • +1

@FireRunner: Depends what firmware version its on. If its at 9.0 or below you could sell it for quite a bit more privately because of the recent progress with Jailbreak.

                  • @TommyGun: Heard about that, unfortunately I’ve been keeping it up to date

    • The controller cost 109$ though so bigw deal is a bit cheaper if you need 2 controllers

      • +1

JB had them for $95 last week.

        • +2

And they go on sale closer to 70 a few times a year (search past OzBargain deals).

          • +1

@GandalfTheCheap: Black Friday is coming up I'm sure we'll see DualSense controllers for under $75

      • +1

Bought the nice red controller for $84 at good guys a few weeks ago.

  • +15

    meh digital version. avoid.

    • -1

Why? I've not bought a disc in years and been completely happy.
Each to their own, but for those like me, the disc version is of no use, but hell this is expensive now since the price increase.

      • +19

Because the cost of games on the PS store in general is more than the disc versions that you can purchase and brick-and-mortar stores.

        • +1

Not if you set up a Turkish PSN account it’s not 😍

          • @Gregors510: How do you go abput with this?

            • @curryking69: Search it on here - there was a post a while back. Revolut cards work, you can buy games but not PS+ (anymore). Then you game share to your main account.

              • @Gregors510: Hi, never knew Revolut card works on PSN Turkish store, thanks!!

              • @Gregors510: Im looking for ps plus asw mainly but yes cheaper games is a big W too. Wait not the store Big W 🫠

                • @curryking69: It used to work but currently I can’t figure out how to get it to work - I don’t mind paying a bit extra for PS Plus if I can buy games I know I’ll like (so I don’t mind having digital where I can’t resell) digitally for 50/60% of the Day 1 price. That said it looks like Day 1 prices are slowly dropping?

        • +1

Plus you can resell or gift away games when you're sick of them or they get added to PS+.

      • +15

If you value money, then discs will be cheaper in the long run. Less convenient yes, but much cheaper if you buy AAA games.

        • +7

PS - you can also sell/trade disks.

        • +5

It’s not like disc version restricts you to physical. You can pick and choose which format you want to buy with the disc version. Digital you’re always stuck with whatever Sony decides to charge

      • +4

If you are going to wait 6 years until games are sometimes $15 on the store, makes sense. If you plan on buying games new or soon after release - then you're definitely going to save more money than it costs for the disc version by getting the disc version and buying disc games on sale / with vouchers / borrowing a game from a friend / etc

      • +1

I bought digital for this reason. The only game I bought on release was the Tony Hawk Pro Skater remake and PS+ is getting better. Just add to your wishlist and wait for a sale. The backwards compatibility with PS4 games is really good and I’d finished the few games I had on disc (now sold).

      • I agree, all the ps4 games i had sold i thought i would regret my digital console purchase, but having the new ps plus catalog has saved me so much time and money.

Not having to change discs and wait for the physical disc to arrive… worth it IMO

        • +1

Yep works quite well if you don't really play any new games at all.

      • +7

Another option that people forget is buying second-hand discs. A very useful strategy is to buy recently released games second-hand then quickly resell it at the price you brought it for once you have completed that game.

For example, earlier this year, I brought a second-hand disc of Horizon Forbidden West for $60 about 2 weeks after the game first released. I finished the game in 2 weeks and luckily for me, prices remain the same about 4 weeks after release so I easily re-sold the game for $60 and ended up cash neutral.

        • You can also play a disc for 7 days then return it to EB for a full refund. I don't abuse it, since I normally look for bargains to keep games longer term, but a couple of times it's been solid for games I didn't enjoy enough to ever play again after a few days of checking them out.

      • +2

@sim, because when the service goes down, you don't have access to your games you paid top dollar for. Also Sony especially are brutal in shutting down their older gen stores so in 10 years when you want to go back to your old games, you will be lucky if you can access them at all. Plus owning the game looks cool in your collection on the shelf

      • +1

I bought the disc version, despite only using and buying the digital versions of games, becauseI I feel that it gives me more options.

For example if the game price difference is really big and I can't buy cheap digital version from an overseas market, I might consider a disc version.

Another option I have is playing older games that are no longer available for sale at the digital store, but which can sometimes be found on disc (even if it's second hand).

But, in the end, I think it's entirely a personal choice.

        • Yeah, I understand some of the points people have made above.
For me, I don't have an interest is selling or buying discs or putting them on display, as some have mentioned they do.
My last lost of old discs ended up in the dumpster.
I just prefer digital and to tend to buy instantly when I'm in the mood, ie not planned.
We're all different and it's interesting hearing other points of view :)

  • +23

Not a bargain for the digital version. Too close to the price of the real one.

    • +2

If dead set on Digital then you can get it at JB Hi Fi as linked above without paying another $100 for an extra controller too

    • What about for $649 or less? Deal or no deal?

      • Normal price.

There's no longer any shortage on the digital version.

        • The disc version has been available on Amazon in the Horizon Forbidden West bundle for the past few days (at ~$900).
It might be the end of the shortages though upcoming Christmas shopping may say otherwise

          • +1

@FireRunner: Looks like the discless ps5 is a walled garden for game sales. Meaning you can’t get deals on disc games. Not sure if that’s correct or not but that seems like a very Sony thing.

            • +2

@checkingthisout: That’s correct. You can’t use discs so you’re at the mercy of PlayStation store prices

  • +8

Digital for this much money$? What do they think this is?

  • +3

With the recent deals, I guess no more scalpers for PS5 & XBX ?

    • +1

Yeah, some of the bundles have remained available for more than a day now. I can't understand how anybody with half a brain would pay scalper prices now, but they are still around.

Scalpers may be still picking up PS5's for Christmas still. I hope Sony can keep supply up over that period, and the scalpers get stranded with their stock.

  • +1

Extra White is an interesting colour choice.

  • +4

    Horrible price for a digital

  • +5

    ITS A TRAP

  • +1

This one is missing the new template!

  • +1

    Nah don't do it.

  • has anyone actually played split screen with a game on a ps5? every multiplayer game is online I don't see a point to having 2 controllers unless you can't make sure you controller is always charged.

    • yes, fifa, it takes two(traded my ps4). And I don't actually play online.

    • +1

Yes, Don't Starve Together and It Takes Two. And very easy to cycle the controllers to charge while playing single player things in between

    • that's the only reason i bought a second controller, they die so quickly.

    • Yes, and it's quite annoying how it works. See, if you play a PS4 game, you can use a PS5 controller on it as well as a PS4 controller…but playing the same game on the PS5 version won't let you use the PS4 controller in split screen. So I'm left playing Human Fall Flat and Tony Hawk's inferior PS4 versions if I want to do split screen.

Another fumble on Sony's part tra la la

    • Human Fall Flat - so much fun haha

    • OverCooked, Moving Out, Death Squared

    • I have 4 controllers as qe play lots of local co op. Extra controller is easily worth it for me

    • TMNT is great couch co-op fun.

  • +3

$99 for a controller yikes, Sony just keeps losing the plot

    • +1

      It’s a very nice controller.

      • +11

It's a very, very nice controller, that's frequently on special for around $70.

  • +2

Wow compare the comments here to the recent Xbox post… it’s like day and night

    • +1

      Yeah it was peaceful

    • +4

Price increase, forced bundled items and digital only is an unholy mix for bargainers

    • +1

Yeah, and Sony earned the response they are getting, price hikes 2 years into a console lifecycle and forced bundling of controllers and/or games for more than they are worth to buy on their own.

    • Could it be something to do with stacking Amex/microsoft cash back offer and Xbox 10% discount gift cards, that make the final price a real bargain? 😜

  • +1

    RRP ain't a deal soz

  • +3

If they want digital to happen they need to have an open market of buying games. Being restricted in buying insanely over-priced games on the PlayStation store is something nobody wants to endure.

    • Eneba has definitely helped me stay all digital the last few years on Xbox. Bought these yesterday for a mate for xmas who doesn't believe me how easy it is. 24 and change, for 24 games.* And there's plenty of other / better deals out there, home boy just likes these games.

      https://postimg.cc/5jfPyYrY

*and their stupid service fee, I forgot how much it was, think it was like $2.07 or so, but still.

  • +3

For one brief, unholy second, i thought this was an honest-to-goodness genuine bonafide PS5 deal… then realised it was discless edition.

  • +3

    Yeah nah. Cheaper at JBhifi

  • +2

If I was this late getting to the Console party id be very seriously considering Xbox.

Though, I do love me some Sony exclusive games but theyre more often coming to PC these days.
IF they continue down this road of neither brand having console exclusives it may be my last console!

Actually on reconsidering I do prefer the more laid back experience and usability of consoles.

    • -1

Consoles have annoying bugs and waiting to download updates etc these days.

Still slightly easier than PC, but basically if you buy a controller and plug your PC into your TV it's as good as a console, plus all the benefits of PC.

      • +1

        Consoles have annoying bugs

        And PCs don't?

        • -1

In the old days, major console bugs were super rare, but now they have them, just like PC.

  • +1

    Digital… yuck
