Vivi (store rep) from the Sofirn Torch AU group on Facebook shared these deals.

For questions about more deals, coupons and after-sales support for the sofirn-au store on Amazon Australia, please contact Vivi via: [email protected]

According to the post there's a small amount of the original Q8 in stock. If you receive a Q8 instead of a Q8 Pro, please contact sofirnjp and they should send a Q8 Pro without additional batteries.

The batteries from the Q8 are the same for the Q8 Pro - this means if you order a Q8 Pro and end up with a Q8, as long as you contact them you should get 2 torches instead of 1 (probably because these are now fulfilled by Amazon directly so Vivi can't stop them from sending a wrong one)

That headlight one looks really versatile. Thanks OP.

  • +10

I bought the SP36 Pro last week after emailing Vivi for a discount code, and my god these are "f*** you" levels of bright.

    • +2

Thank you. That's exactly what I wanted to know.

    • Yeah, I got the Q8 from the last OzB deal. it's stupid bright at the highest setting. I want one that has a beam focus on it that is as bright or better now.

      • Have you found one with a beam focus option?

        • +1

No, but I have not gone looking really. Just hoping one will turn up in here at some point.

    • Would it be too bright for cycling use?

Don't really want to blind oncoming traffic

      • Brightness is fully adjustable!

        • So there's a dial on the side?

          • +2

@sh4hp: The SP36 pro runs Anduril 2 (think of it like an operating system for the torch) so there's an extremely wide variety of button combinations you can press with that single button to do different things with the light.

For brightness adjustment, you just turn it on and then click the button + hold and it goes up or down in brightness.

Here's an example of what Anduril 2 can do

      • Yeah, it's a bit bright for cycling. You can switch between stepped and smooth ramping modes so that the brightness can be adjusted by going up levels or smoothly from a very low output to very bright.

Ideally a bike light has an elliptical lens to help spread the beam. If you use a standard torch with a reflector then it might be too bright for oncoming road users, even on a low setting.

Mounting it to a bike may be tricky. Cable ties? :-P

    • The SP36 Pro is fantastic, and being smaller than the Q8 I thinks probably a better choice for most people.

I resisted the SP36 for a long time as I already had a couple of Q8s I hardly used, but once I got one it became my household standby torch. Three 18650s give plenty of runtime, and the USB C charging means it’s easy to top up.

      • I'd probably have to agree with that. (Although no experience with the pro versions.)

I've got the BLF versions of both the Q8 and SP36, and while I like the tint and beam better from the Q8, if I'm going somewhere that needs bulk light, the smaller size of the SP36 plus being able to recharge the batteries directly in the light with USB-C means it wins out most of the time.

        • both SP3 pro and Q8 pro have usb-c charging ports now…

Q8 pro has 4 batteries, so it should have longer runtimes?

          • @slowmo: Well that's a bit of a facepalm moment. Obviously I haven't read/watched any reviews of the Q8 pro otherwise I would have known that, but the fact that I also did not even see that in the Amazon listing is a definite fail.

Still, the smaller SP36 might win out due to the size. But you are right about the Q8 potentially lasting longer.

And I don't need another torch. I don't need ano… I'm still waiting on the Wurkkos TS10 to be delivered!

    thank OP i am getting a sp40a

Thoughts on vs ZebraLight H600d Mk IV @ $95.97?

      • +1

Zebralight is smaller, lighter, more robust and efficient. The UI is more flexible. Slightly higher output at max.

I've purchased 2x SP40 & a HS05 so 3 headlamps from Sofirn for the same cost as my one ZL headlamp, H600Fw MK IV, so bang for buck Sofirn wins.

      • Good price. Where is that from?
I recently got a Skilhunt H04RC and can highly recommend that headlamp. I much prefer the switch on the top/side than on the end like the zebra and sofirns have.

      • The ZL has a much lower-low mode which IMO is far more useful, especially for a headlamp. The UI is also more flexible (but can be confusing at first), but it is twice the price. If you're only starting out then I'd get a couple of Sofirn lights before I bought a ZL.

I just checked i was one of those who received Q8 instead of Q8 Pro, as it was birthday present never took notice until this post have emailed above for correct model thanks

  • +1

Bought the LT1S to complement my LT1. Will be used for motocamping so the smaller size will come in handy. Thanks OP.

  • i've not looked at torches for a while, i've still have that sunwayman m40a i got many years ago.

is this brand a less dodgy brand?

    • +5

I think the brand has been around since 2017, I got my first Sofirn in 2018 and have purchased plenty more since for myself and others. Cost effective, generally good quality and reasonably responsive customer service via Facebook, reddit or BLF (budgetlightforum.com).

Pre 2017 they were a factory manufacturing for other brands eg ThorFire. Currently they design and manufacture under the Sofirn brand as well as making lights for Wurkkos and some Astrolux lines. They've collaborated with BLF community on the design and manufacture of Sofirn AAA Yuji, C01S, LT1, SP10 Pro & LT1 mini.

      TLDR: Not dodgy

      • cheers, thanks for that.

i've been a regular BLF and CLF lurker more than 10 years ago… my fenix e21a was damaged by leaks recently (the 1 time i was lazy and used disposable instead of eneloops)… so now looking for suitable replacements.

will grab a couple of these lights. thanks.

  • Where do you enter promotion code .

    • +1

      at the check out page

  • Can you adjust the beam with the q80 pro or is it just on and off with different brightness through pushing the power button?

    • Looks like no adjustment. Will probably end up returning.

    • +3

The vast majority of torches with adjustable beam have it to make up for low quality/output LED. The build quality and electronics tend to be pretty crappy too. I've only got the older, plain SP36 & Q8 but even at 5000lumen, it's pretty impressive output.

Get a a good flooder like the Q8 or SP36 and a thrower like Sofirn IF22A and leave the zoomies in the bargain bin.

    • Negative, but it's for the better. Get an IF22A as your spotlight/thrower & a Q8 Pro for flood, good combo

  • anyone know if they make something for bicycle headlights? or if there's something I should be looking at that's decent in the very budget range?

    • you can get mounts for some of these types of lights (not sofirn specifically) so you are not limited to low powered light.

granted, you don't want to get something as powerful as a car head lamp, but you probably want something decent.

this is probably overkill but there are many cheaper options: https://www.amazon.com.au/Fenix-BC30-Wireless-LumenTac-Batte…

      • 286 bucks… yikes! I'd probably buy a new bike before buying that. Will have a look around

        • +1

haha. that's just a reference, not recommending to take that one.

there are mounts available for you to mount a normal torch. So you are not limited to just 'bikes lamp'.

          • @slowmo: I'd be looking at one that has focus adjuster and is as bright as I can get for around $20, and runs on a AA or AAA (or multiple). I had one of those [something]fire ones from years ago that I got for under 10 bucks from a post on here, but I lost it and the alkaline that was in it leaked and screwed the whold thing up, probably after something similar

            • @Jackson: yeah, there are lots of the *fire ones during that time, and i lost track which ones are the original.

anyway, as i'm looking for some lights today, this also popped up, not $20, but i suppose you can look for something decent around this range: https://www.amazon.com.au/LUMINTOP-Rechargeable-Waterproof-H…

              has decent runtime too.

tbf, I have an embarrassing pile of eneloops stash, but in order to get a brighter torch (and longer runtime per charge), i end up gravitating back to torches with lithium batteries (like this deal)…

so it is probably time for me to 'cut the cord' and just let the kids have the eneloops for their toys and i move into the lithium rechargeables.

  • Like these in the Aldi version

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Rechargable-Illumination-Bicycle-R…

Aldi's is a rebrand - I got it on clearance from My aldi for $10

    • This is more my price range, I'd probably prefer a light that takes AAA or AA, so I can keep it for years and change the battery when needed, but for 10 bucks I could probably run with that

      • +1

cycle lights come in two categories - those that let other people see you and those that let you see other people

The linked ones are in the former category - bright enough for drivers etc to see you (esp if you put them on flash), but if you want to ride down a darkened road or path then you will barely be able to see anything more than a couple of metres in front of you. Which means you either have to go very slowly or just take a risk that you will run into something (or more likely someone) every now and then (btw, I have exactly those linked ones and they are great as flashing 'warning lights', but I wouldnt trust them whatsoever as my main light. Maybe if you got 3 of them and put them all on your bike it might be ok, if its not too dark)

You need to spend a bit of money to get a proper light - try cygolite; yes they are still around $100 but that is what you need. Unless, of course, you are riding under streetlights all the time, then it doesnt really matter

or get the SP40A Kit 5000K from the original post, which comes with a headband, and either wear that under your helmet or see if you can jury rig it to your helmet in some way.

        • you said it better. :)

when on a bike, you probably want a visible distance further than when you are just walking/hiking.

from what i'm reading, the sp40a is floody, so might not work that well for bike, it would be awesome as a garage light.

  • Any with a rear button?

    • +1

You should look into convoy flashlights if you want one with a tail switch

  • Are the batteries replaceable?

    • +1

Yes, you can replace them with other 18650 and 21700 3.7V Li-ion batteries. They're rechargeable.

      SP36 Pro, Q8 Pro, SP40A: 18650 batteries

      LT1S: 21700 battery

You may want to use the included button top 18650 cells for the SP36 Pro and Q8 Pro because there's a ring that they press against. Flat top 18650 cells may not work.

  • SP40A Kit 5000K $34.44 or WUBEN H1 LED Headlamp https://amzn.asia/d/iu8qx1k ?

    • +2

I looked at both and ended up goign for the SP40A as it can be detached and used as a normal hand held flashlight as well (with magnetic base). Both are the same in terms of brightness and battery life but the SP40A has a smooth brightness transition. Wuben is USBC whereas SP40A is micro.

      • I like that the wubens light is centered and that it has a big battery. It doesnt say that wuben is usb c but if it is even better.

  • Is the SP40A usb-c? Looks to be micro usb in the pictures :(

  • Slightly off topic, but recently had my 20y/o Maglight 3D cell torch stolen. Kept in car for protection.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a modern LED replacement?

    • Not sure why anyone would steal a maglight. There are conversion kits to upgrade from incandescent to LED globes.

Do you want to blind them or whack people? And what is the budget?

The Q8 is pretty bright and is thicker than a red bull can so can hit them too. SP36 is an option too.

      • +1

i suppose there's a cut-off age where you can still claim you are into baseball…

      • which is better, the Q8 or SP36?

        • What are your metrics for better?

Q8 Pro is brighter but costs more. Neither are pocketable in my view.

          • @Caped Baldy: Just for walks on the beach at night on the Gold Coast. I guess a brighter torch might annoy more people if I'm shining up into the high rise buildings.

            • +1

              @x x: Answered below :)

Lumen is the amount of light from the source.
Lux is lumen divided by area.
6500K is colour temp ie the colour tint of the light

Sadly, I couldn't find beamshots of the 6500K. I think the 5000K is preferred though and it is impressive either way. I've briefly shone lights at buildings and I don't think it's a big issue unless it's prolonged. You might need to get a holster as it is a big boi.

Edit: there is a screw mount so can a strap or something too

              • @Caped Baldy: Thanks for the info. I found a forum for torch nerds and they discuss the differences between Q8 and SP36:
                https://budgetlightforum.com/node/65655

                • +1

@x x: just be aware thats Q8 and this deal is the Q8 pro. as is SP36 and SP36 pro :)

                • +1

@x x: Just be careful, the ones for sale are the pro versions. So some comments won't be relevant.

            • +2

@x x: don't be fooled at the upper end of the lumen claims though…

a lot of these (LED torches, not this brand specifically), while they are quite capable of the top end output, they can't hold it there for long, for heat/safety reasons.

so in reality, you would be spending a lot of time in the mid-range or lower if you so prefer.

      • on that note, i am looking for some sort of foldable walking stick that i could double as a "monopod" (i don't have to attach it)… because leaning my body weight on an actual monopod is going to be worse for my wallet.

    • -1

Get the Wuben C3 for like $35.

    • +2

If you want to melt somebody's eyeballs before you wallop them, Convoy L7:
      https://m.aliexpress.com/item/1005002885481040.html

  • +1

    Thanks, got a Q8 pro.
I recently bought a SC31 Pro but that doesn't light up my dungeon enough.

    • you should get 2 or more ;)

  • What does 6500K refer to, it's not the brightness?
    SP36 Pro KIT 6500K (8,000 lumen)
    Q8 Pro kit 6500K (11,000 lumen)

    • +2

6500K is the colour temperature. Colour temp goes from warm to cool ie red>orange>yellow>white>blue. 6500K is cool white

  • Thanks for the post, got an LT1S :)

Have been very impressed with the SP36 and SP40a also.

  • I prefer the HS40 over SP40a which has a wider beam. Hopefully that can include that

  • +1

Knowing my luck, if I order I'll get what I requested, and not the Q8 with bonus Q8 Pro

  • Any issues with batteries not being protected? Is there a greater spontaneous fire risk or something? What if the protection circuit in the light failed? Total noob when it comes to these lights and batteries.

    • +1

Protected batteries sometimes have Over Charge Protection (cut-off at 4.20V), Over Discharge Protection (cut-off at 2.70V) and they might cut-off in a high drain torch where the current required is much higher than what the cell manufacturer recommends.

      https://lygte-info.dk/info/battery%20protection%20UK.html

You could get a cheap digital multimeter to check if a torch has a high parasitic drain where current continues to be drawn while the torch is off. The battery might go to 0V. The internal resistance becomes too high and it can be a fire hazard when you go to charge it.

      • Very thorough reply. Thank you!

  • This brand vs wuben?

    • +3

Sofirn are much more active on budgetlightforum and in the torch community. They're constantly working with enthusiasts to bring new torch ideas to market while focusing on keeping costs low.

  • +1

I ordered the SP40A Kit 5000K. I don't need it. I have many torches. But I don't have one quite like this..

    • i'm looking for a small torch with a magnetic tail cap and a wide beam , intended to be stuck under the bonnet. The SP40A has the led in the wrong location or it would be ideal lol.

      • You can check out the Sofirn SC21 —> link. I dont have this torch myself but it sounds like it matches your requirements.

        • thanks for that! It gave me some xmas gift ideas. looking at the SC21 Pros

  • Does the LT1S have any timer function? I am looking for something that may switch off automatically after an hour.

  • I ordered an SP40A and it cost $29.28 (prime member). Thanks OP. Looking forward to receiving it!
